Marked By Destiny

Thrilling and Adventurous. Fated Mates. Witty Banter. Found Family.

Marked By Destiny is the first in the Birthmark series that follows Ira on her journey to discovering what having a true destiny really means. This first book is an epic fantasy with a delicious slow burn and heartwarming found family vibes.

Ira Killian has spent her entire life in a small village, where she has been constantly reminded that unlike everyone else in the land, she was not born with a birthmark to convey her destiny. What should have been an uneventful nineteenth name day for Ira goes awry when a stranger comes knocking at her door, planning to take her to the warrior training village, StoneGlass.

After losing her parents in a violent fire, Ira has no choice but to venture out with the stranger, Kaiden, who she deems responsible for the loss of her ordinary life.

While training to fight in the era-long war, Ira learns that her misplaced birthmarks have more meaning than she could have ever dreamed of. As more information unravels, Ira wonders about the secrets being kept from her and takes matters into her own hands.

The more Ira discovers about herself, her gifted fate, and her forgotten past, the more she wonders if finally having the destiny she so longingly dreamed of is a gift or a curse.

Maggie has dreamed of being an author since she first brought pen to paper and let her imagination run wild. When she’s not reading or writing, she usually has a case of the travel bug, and loves exploring new countries (which tends to bring a new round of inspiration to her writing). She has always been an avid believer that reading gives you the opportunity to escape the real world and fall into an entirely new one, which might be why she loves fantasy so much. She resides in Illinois with her husband, Alec, baby girl, and pup, Denali (who has rightfully earned the nickname Bad Dog D).

First things first!!! MY FRIEND IS AN AUTHOR! WOW! 🎉📖

This book throws you straight into a state of WHAT IS GOING ON?! I NEED ANSWERS! (iloveit)🌀 From the very beginning, it hooks you, and trust me, you’ll find yourself flipping through the pages ASAP, especially once Kaiden shows up with those “I’m here to protect you” vibes. Like, yes, pls, dear sir, I will gladly take that protection from a handsome, arrow-shooting hunk of a man 🏹.

Obviously in the book you will get that initial protection but of course, it’s in the worst possible way... leading to some delicious tension where Ira’s attraction is all tangled with irritation.

The slow burn candle? 🔥 Oh, it's burning HOT. And as the plot develops, you just NEED to know more about Ira and why she feels the way she does—especially about her destiny. The found family element adds so much depth, making you not only root for the romance but also get emotionally attached to the characters around her. 🥹✨

I’d say this book serves as the foundation or “beginner course” for what feels like a storm of war, political intrigue, and even more chaos waiting in the rest of the series. (aka SH*T’S ABOUT TO GO DOWN.)

p.s the spice is low but we will totally see levels going up later on

You’ll love not only the romance, but also how the world is built, showing how destiny can be unpredictable and leave you with too many questions before having even the slightest clue of the ultimate answer.

Tropes:
🗡️Slow Burn
🗡️Fated Mates
🗡️Found Family
🗡️Witty Banter

Thank you, Maggie, for giving me an eARC in exchange for my honest review! 🥰

‼️This Review is 100% biased & without flaws😉‼️

THIS IS A FANTASY BOOK WITH A SUBPLOT OF ROMANCE.

If you go into this book thinking it’s heavy romance with a side of fantasy, then you should probably find the closest magical hidden waterfall to jump into and swim away🏊🏼‍♀️🤿

There will be more romance in future books, but this first book is focused on how our main girl Ira found herself on the adventure of a lifetime!

So let me back up and explain to you how lucky I was to find myself in the position of beta reader. The date of time was February 28, 2024. It was a beautiful day outside, sun was shining, squirrels were tormenting my dog, and Maggie approached me and asked me if I would like to beta read her debut fantasy book for her. Of course, without hesitation, I immediately said yes.

When I tell you that this book had me in an absolute chokehold from the beginning - I mean that I couldn’t stop texting Maggie about how wonderful the world building was, the characters, and immersive storyline.

If this book was a pizza, I ate up every single slice and left no crumbs. 🍕

Do you love books with hidden Easter eggs and clues? This book is for you. Do you love fantasy books that don’t over complicate world building and have easy to pronounce character names? Pick this up. Do you at any point give yourself high praise for your taste in books? Look no further. This book has it all🤍

Ira & Kaiden are electric and swoon worthy in every single way. The chemistry and banter they have is off the charts and the side characters in this book make the entire story that much more enjoyable. From Nala’s bubbly personality to Thameus’s wise words of wisdom, you’ll Constantly (😉) be switching who you favorite character is! (See what I did there for those who have read the book?🤭)

Here are some incredible things you will find in this book:

✨found family
✨the chosen one
✨slow burn
✨incredible banter
✨fated mates
✨a good time
✨character with a heart of absolute gold

I would like to conclude my review by saying: if you don’t read this book, please check yourself into a doctor’s office to find out what’s wrong with you.❤️

Marked by destiny is an absolute MASTERPIECE of found family & magic!! It usually takes me a while to get into a fantasy book but with this one I was hooked IMMEDIATELY! And I cannot recommend it enough! 👏🏼😭

This is fantasy book with a subplot of romance, so not necessarily a romantasy but the TENSION and the BANTER between characters was EVERYTHING😍 I couldn’t stop blushing, giggling, and kicking my feet! While also at the edge of my seat freaking out when the time came for intense & serious moments too!😱

This book embodies the found family trope SO perfectly!! Trust me when I say you will fall in love with every single character! And the relationship dynamics between them all is so beautiful, you can clearly see how much thought and heart was put into each individual relationship! Which is honestly so impressive to me! And the MAGIC in this book..the best I’ve ever read honestly, it was so fun, and whimsical, and UNIQUE!💙

I cannot WAIT for book two and to continue this series!! I loved this so much that even though I beta read it, I signed up to arc read as well because I just missed the world and the characters so much! Congratulations to Maggie Lynn on such an amazing debut book and thank you so much for allowing me the absolute honor of beta & arc reading🥹🥰💙

Before I even get into this incredible book, I just have to applaud my author friend!!! Maggie, I am so freaking proud of you!! You really did the damn thing and thank you so much for trusting me to arc read your baby. Xoxoxo

This was a little outside of my comfort zone , but the storytelling and the plot and the writing can’t be denied no matter what genre you love to read. This told such a unique story that had so much mystery woven into it. I loved the base of this plot with the tattoos and the destiny. The story had a way of setting itself aside from a lot of other fantasy books, while not being overly complicated. It was like that perfect sweet spot for me where it felt super interesting and fresh without leaving me lost or confused.

I’m a sucker for a found family and this one goes a little deeper ( IYKYK) the dedication and devotion these characters had to each other was beautifully written and I loved watching them all click into place 🥹🫶🏻
And I’m really looking forward to seeing where Ira and Kaidens relationship goes because those two 😍🎆

This book sucked me in from the very beginning and every time I sat down to read, I found myself blowing through like 100 pages.

There’s still so much story left to be told and I feel like we’re just scratching the surface here and I can’t fucking wait to see how everything unfolds.

First and foremost, thank you Maggie for sending me an eARC of your debut novel. Huge congratulations on this amazing accomplishment.

This book follows Ira who is trying to figure out who she is and what she's meant to do in life. Ira is covered in birthmarks that she has no idea where they came from but on her 19th name day, instead of getting a birthmark like she was supposed to, she is told she is supposed to go to StoneGlass to become a warrior, a place she believed to be a myth.

Although the first 20% of this book had me hooked and at the edge of my sit, as I kept reading I felt it dragged until we finally got some answers.

I have never read a book that talks about alcoholism, and I really enjoyed that. That was such a unique aspect that we don't see in other fantasy books. I did felt like it was brushed off too easily but I'm hoping to see it pop up again in upcoming books. Maybe she'll fall off the wagon???? Don't mind me, I'm just spiraling.

I'm not a romance girl so I didn't necessarily need it in this book. However, the chemistry between Ira and Kaiden felt a bit forced. Even though I wasn't a fan of their interactions, I did enjoyed the found-family aspect in this story. They were all very protective about one another, and their bond as a found-family was executed brilliantly. Nela was probably my favorite character, and I am also very interested in Thameus so I hope we learn more about them in the next installment.

I would've love to have more world building and politics in this first book. I felt I didn't learn too much about it but I'm ascribing that to Ira learning more about herself and her origin, and probably we will get more world building in the sequel.

Overall, this was a solid first book in this new fantasy series. It was a great introduction to this new world. Everything about the birthmarks was very unique and I'm looking forward to learn more about them. I was only 5% in and this book gave me HUGE Percy Jackson vibes and I'm here for it. I cannot wait to see where the story goes, and I'm looking forward to reading book two sometime soon.

I am sharing my true and honest opinions not to diminish the book nor the author, but to share my genuine and unbiased opinions as an arc reader.

Two of my favorite quotes:

1. "Nothing more dangerous than a flower on the battlefield."
2. "If I've learned anything from healing warriors, it's that if a man did something right, it's because a WOMAN was there leading him in that direction."

4⭐️ first of all thank you SOOO much to Maggie for sending me this arc! I’m so honored to have been chosen to read this in advance of pub day 🫶🏽 Maggie, truly, congratulations! this is an insane accomplishment

I wanna give the disclaimer that I’m not a heavy fantasy girlie (I dabble in the basic bitch romantasy books you see everywhere on booktok mostly) so take my review with a grain of salt

right off the bat this book has such a unique and creative premise, I loved the birthmarks, and I loved the way Ira’s character is introduced

without giving anything away there’s also a SUPER unique issue handled in this book that I feel like you never really see in fantasy books so I LOVED that

overall I loved the kind of Percy Jackson-esque vibes it gave (did anyone else feel that way??) and I was curious to find out wtf was going on the entire time

that said I do wish there had been a little bit more world building/politics introduced to “up” the stakes a bit, and I would’ve LOVED spice in this one but I understand why there wasn’t 🤣 I also still had a lot of unanswered questions by the end but maybe that’s the point if this is the first in a long series 👀

again Maggie thank you so much for the arc!!

I was so lucky to receive an ARC for this beautiful book.

Guys, I am not joking when I say this book was so good!!!

The way I am obsessed with Ira and kaiden!! Their chemistry was just just AMAZING! I feel maggie done really well with making us excited for their romance but also not taking our mind off of the main plot at hand.

The plot really had me hooked. I found it so interesting and found myself constantly trying to guess what certain things meant or if I could guess what was going to happen (I didn't😂).

Another thing I loved was the world building.
I found the world building was so easy to understand (which is great because I'm still new to fantasy).

I can't recommend this book enough!!

This is a new adult fantasy with a subplot of romance. However, there will be more romance in future books.

Tropes-
Found family
Fated mates
Slow burn

Want to start this off big saying a HUGE thank you to Maggie for giving me a chance to be an arc reader for her debut novel. I also want to say that I typically have a rough time with arcs, and I’ve been let down by many multiple times, so I’m always wary of them. That wasn’t the case with this one.

This book does an incredible job of getting you wrapped up immediately. By 10%, there was already so much going on that I was hooked. Many fantasies take awhile to get into so this is something I really appreciated. I also thought that the entire world was unique, easy to get into (Maggie gives you the most useful glossary in the beginning that’s soooo helpful too) and different from other fantasies I’ve read. It was darker in a lot of ways, which I actually loved.

I was rooting for Ira from the very beginning, and I loved seeing her growth. Especially since she’s a character who really doesn’t know what her true purpose is. Her and Kaiden’s banter was making me giggle like a school girl, and I was cheering for them from the get-go too. But outside of the relationship, one of my favorite parts was the found family aspect. There’s nothing I love more than a main character finding her footing with a group of people who understand what she’s gone through 🥹

The only thing I wish was that I was left in more suspense about Ira’s background & that it had was a bigger cliffhanger at the very end. That being said, you’re still left with so many questions, which sets up for book 2 perfectly (and, of course, I’ll be reading it). Highly recommend if you’re on the hunt for a fun fantasy!

Gooo Maggie! Thank you so much for this ARC. I've been following your journey for a while now, and I couldn't be prouder of you or more grateful for the chance to read and review this. I adore Maggie, but I promise this review is unbiased.

Plot & World-Building: "Marked By Destiny" was such a fun read with a fresh and creative plot. The magic system and world-building felt completely original, which can be hard to accomplish these days. I never once thought, "Oh, this book is just like that other one." It stands out in its uniqueness, and it’s executed brilliantly.

Characters: Ira, our female main character, captures your interest right away. She's complex, flawed, and deeply relatable, always striving for growth. Her character is wrapped in mystery, influenced by grief, and endlessly curious about her new circumstances.

Nela, another key character, is soft, sweet, and vulnerable yet fiercely loyal to her loved ones. She adds a beautiful layer to the story with her determination and heart.

Kaiden, the male lead, isn’t your typical morally grey love interest, but he’s fantastic all the same. He’s genuinely a good guy, and while I could delve deeper into his character, I’ll keep it spoiler-free. What I can say is that he embodies the kind of perfect partner who makes you feel like a queen every day. He’s the type who would refill snacks for you and your friends during girls' nights and would undoubtedly be the best dad. Just really good energy.

Themes & Vibes: This book is an adventure/quest filled with unique magic, mysteries, and rich backstory. The found family theme is beautifully portrayed; the bond among the characters is strong, even when they aren't perfect individuals. Their protectiveness and love for one another shine through, making it one of my favorite aspects.

The twists are thrilling and keep you guessing. I managed to predict a significant twist, but that doesn't detract from the storytelling—it’s all laid out so well that it feels organic and satisfying.

Final Thoughts: I'm excited to see where Maggie's journey takes her as an author. This is an incredible debut, and I believe she will continue to amaze her readers in the future. Book two now please!

Quotes I Loved:
"Nothing more dangerous than a flower on the battlefield. Well, I would think so. No one expects a flower to kill you."

"I would gladly endure nightmares every night for the rest of this trip if it means you can get some restful sleep."

"There is no prize for getting through hardships without leaning on others or burying the pain away."

"Greif can go awful things to people, -. I'm not looking at you with pity. I'm looking at you with empathy."

"I like learning about you."

Minor Critiques, I did have a couple of minor points that didn’t align perfectly with my taste:

The world felt a bit sparse at times. While the main characters were well-developed with great chemistry, the background felt somewhat empty. In my mind, Stoneglass seemed small, and I would have appreciated a bit more depth to the setting.

The chemistry between Ira and Kaiden, while present, lacked a bit of tension for me. Their back-and-forth communication sometimes diminished the spark, and I would have liked more banter or buildup to enhance their connection. However, what is there is solid, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

I share these critiques not to detract from the book or the author but to provide an authentic reflection of my reading experience. Overall, "Marked By Destiny" is a captivating read, and I can’t wait to see what Maggie does next!

This New Adult fantasy is perfect for you if you love:

⚔️Fated Mates
⚔️Found Family
⚔️Chosen One
⚔️Slow Burn
⚔️Training
⚔️Magic
⚔️Banter
⚔️Repressed Memories

Journey with Ira to the warrior training village, SroneGlass, where she’ll uncover startling secrets about her past along the way. (& maybe also fall for the hot stranger who was sent to retrieve her 🫢)

Marked By Destiny is book one in The Birthmark Series. It is very easy to read and includes several tropes that we know and love in a new adult fantasy. I love a fantasy plot that slowly unravels itself as you uncover bits and pieces along the way - this book definitely delivered. Later books in the series will contain spice, but book 1 is not lacking in banter and slow burn tension. I am so ready for more answers about Ira’s past (and for more Kaiden 🔥) in book 2!

Thank you for this ARC
Debut novel by Maggie Lynn
Great introduction to a fantasy series. Ira- Iradessa travels to StoneGlass and learns of her skill and trains to fight with the help of Kaiden & friends.
I found there to be a fair bit of travelling & I understand the FMC was grieving but I found her to be a little bit much in her responses. The pace is set over a few months on the road where we get to know the people who will be in her immediate circle, and of their birth marks.

Found family, grief, loss of memories, nightmares, hot springs, one bed.

Excited to see where this series continues on!

The chokehold this book had me in from the very first chapter is insane.

The magic system? So unique and intriguing.
The world? Vast and descriptive to the point where you will feel like you are there in the story.
The characters? Your new besties, I dare you to try not to get attached, you will not succeed.

The growth Ira went through already in book 1 was inspiring and I love her so much. Kaiden is 🥵.

I cannot wait for book 2 and I will definitely be preordering the physical copy of this book as soon as I am able to.

Big shoutout and thank you to Maggie for bestowing this ARC upon me. I am so honored to be able to read your debut novel and I cannot wait to see where you take this series! ❤️

War is coming.

And Ira seems to be the the one who can save them all.

But how? She wasn’t even blessed by Aylania with a birthmark to show her destiny in the world. The only one who doesn’t seem to have a purpose.

No purpose, that is, until a trio come on her 19th Name Day to bring her to StoneGlass (thought to be a myth) in order to train to be the warrior she was actually destined to be.

When I say I finished the second half of this book in ONE DAY… so much happened that progressed the story! Not all of our questions were answered, but we have so many more books to come. The tension between Ira and Kaiden was delicious (though irritating at times as I just WANTED IT TO HAPPEN hahahah). My favorite characters were Nela and Emery for two entirely different reasons.

I can’t wait to continue this series and learn more about Ira’s past, how Nela and Kaiden truly fit into her purpose, and how Ira and Kaiden’s relationship develops!!

first I would like to thank Maggie for blessing me with an ARC for this book. I love you so much my friend🥰

I don’t even know where to start because i’m still not sure I can put how I feel into words. Marked by Destiny turned out to be so much more than what I expected. every time I picked this book up, I did not want to put it down. it started out a bit slow for me but when it picked up, I was hooked. although the book had just a sliver of romance, it was perfectly incorporated into the story and didn’t take anything away from the plot. this was definitely a book to get lost in. I seriously enjoyed this book and to Maggie, I am so freaking proud of you, my girl. you did the damn thing and you nailed it! oh and truthfully I would like to have more, ASAP😅

Marked by Destiny delivers an immersive fantasy tale filled with vivid world-building and a compelling exploration of identity and fate. Ira’s journey from an ordinary, unmarked villager to uncovering her unique destiny is captivating, thanks to the seamless and approachable writing style.

The setting of StoneGlass and its warrior training traditions are richly imagined, drawing readers into a world brimming with mystery and intrigue. Ira’s emotional struggles and resilience add depth to her character, making her easy to root for, even as she navigates the darker revelations of her past.

While some plot points felt slightly predictable, the story’s momentum and heartfelt themes kept me engaged throughout.

First of all, THANK YOU MAGGIE for a copy of this arc!
I am a beginner fantasy girly who has mostly read and enjoyed romantasy books and I am very very happy to say I loved Marked by Destiny.
Marked by Destiny is a fantasy book that revolves around found family trope and the way the world building was so easy for me to follow through makes it top tier.

The author has beautifully woven through character development in this plot which I absolutely admired.
A very fun adventurous read!!

GUYS. Maggie really did the damn thing with this one! I am still so enthralled by the breathtaking journey I’ve just gone through.

I truly felt transported to another world where I could fully imagine myself getting sucked into every aspect of the story and unique world building and magic systems. Lynn’s writing is truly eloquent and atmospheric which lead to many highlighted quotes. You can really tell how much time and effort went into crafting this world and all the different characters and creatures. I fell in love with many of them and absolutely cannot wait to see how the story will continue into the next book!

I’m so unbelievably honored that I was able to get an arc for this and now I’m even more excited that I get to tell you all how amazing it is. So do yourself a favor and run, don’t walk to preorder this and immediately add it to your tbr!💗

thank you Maggie for letting me read this arc omg i’m so proud of you, you’re a published author now!! 🥹💓

first off, the premise of this book was so interesting with how it swept me off my feet in the beginning, the magic system is so unique, everything about the world building was extraordinary and i’ve never read anything like this before. the birthmarks are probably my favorite part - again, just so unique!!

this book shocked me several times honestly i had no clue where it was going at any given time and i had full body chills at some points - Maggie should give a go at writing a thriller one day because phew my heart was racing at times

i did not start enjoying the romance aspect probably until the 70% mark which isn’t a bad thing i was more or less just interested in what in the world was going on with ira haha - which again turned out to be so interesting!!

from the 20% mark to the 50% mark of the book it took me a bit to get through but once that 50% mark hit i could not put it down, i was so immersed and i grew to love Nela, Ira, Kaiden, Constance, Thameus & even Emery (lol) by the ending! the found family aspect ughhh give me more please i loved it so much

again, there were just so many unique aspects of this book and i cannot wait to read more of Maggie’s works especially since she said this is going to be a 9 book series as of right now ahh!! 🙌🙌

somewhere between 3.5 and 4 ⭐️'s. I think the world building in this book was really interesting. I've never read anything with birthmarks like that. I also appreciated that there wasn't really any spice because I didn't really feel the biggest connection between the 2 main characters. there wasn't a lot of talk about their feelings for each other and it seems to come out of nowhere at first (I understand why now.) I think it being in third person also might be why I feel unsure of their feelings for each other. towards the end, I'm starting to like the idea of them together more.

I just wish the ending was a little more crazy. something that would make me think about it until the next book comes out, it kind of felt like it wasn't a series with the way it ended. if there was a cliffhanger or twist, I think it would've been 5 stars!! overall though, I'm intrigued and need to see how the relationship continues to develop.

also I love thameus and nela

I was so excited to have the privilege of Arc reading Maggie’s debut novel! This novel immediately sucked me in and I got completely immersed into this world.

As someone who mainly reads romance/Romantasy I was worried I would lose interest since this novel is a fantasy with a side of romance, so after the initial climax in the transitional section of the book I felt like it was going through a slow pace, but around the half way mark I kept finding myself picking up this read at any free time I had. I could not put it down at all.

The magic system are so unique and cool, and I loved the action. I loved trying to figure out what was going on with the main character, and I loved seeing her growth. This novel is such a fun read, with found family, witty banter, fated mates, and the BEST magical monsters and action. If you love the Percy Jackson books/vibes I think you’d love this read. Thank you again Maggie! I’m looking forward to the next. 🔥

P.S I have a crush on Thameus

In a world where you birthmark and its placement determines your destiny in life, Ira is born is with eight misplaced birthmarks and no destiny in sight until a fire destroys all she knew and changes her destiny forever.

This concept was so gripping and the ending was nothing like I anticipated it to be! I can’t believe this beautiful world that Maggie has created! This is an intricate but not difficult world to comprehend! I recommend this book and can’t wait to see what happens with Ira, Kaiden and everyone, and Darsdafia in book 2!

Thank you so much, Maggie for the chance to read an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

Huge thank you to Maggie for letting me arc read her debut novel ! I absolutely loved it ! Some of the things I liked where in the beginning of the book how she simplified it for us with how to pronounce the names of the characters . I also liked that she told us about the different birthmarks and the different characters /creatures powers a guide before you jumped into the story and world building . I absolutely loved the found family and fated mates trope its done so well and she has you hooked from the very beginning. I would absolutely recommend this if you want to try fantasy and I can’t wait until the next book !

“Marked By Destiny “ by Maggie Lynn 📖💫 release date 10/21/24
4⭐️

If you’re looking for a Fantasy book that sucks you in from the beginning then I would recommend this beautiful book. 💫
The journey the author takes you on with the descriptive and beautiful worlds and different but relatable characters is amazing. 🤩

The world building was very easy to follow and the I loved the magic system and the certain “Birthmarks “ that lead you to your destiny!
MFC “Ira” is just trying to find her destiny and way in life and is taking on an epic journey to find that. 💫

Loved the witty , yet turbulent relationship between Ira and MMC
” Kaiden” they reminded me a old married couple with their constant bickering lol 😂 and the major slow burn attraction …phew 😮‍💨

And loved Ira’s friendships with her travel companions Thameus and Nela . That turns into “found family “ love that trope. ❤️
My favorite character was the wise Thameus (who is a Centaur) He really left a mark on me and hopefully will read more about him in the next book! ✨
But I was a little confused by the ending but hopefully the second book will answer all of my unanswered questions? !

Overall if you like a Fantasy with a dash of Romance, found family, fated mates, multiple lives, an epic war, good vs evil , then I would recommend this epic fantasy!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Maggie Lynn for the opportunity to [arc ] read your debut novel ! 😘

I had the privilege of receiving this ARC and loved the adventure.
If you love romantasy and are interested in no spice, but great banter and tension. Found family, the chosen one, a looming war, and training sessions.... you'll love this book!!

It all starts with Ira.

I had the honor of being an ARC reader for Marked by Destiny, Maggie’s debut novel!

I was instantly pulled into this story and on the edge of my seat. The intrigue, action, descriptive world building, and unique magic system? Amazing.

This book has two of my favorite tropes, found family and fated mates - and I couldn’t get enough. I can’t wait for the next book.

I highly recommend this for my fantasy girlies!
