Nick reclaimed his heritage. Now it’s time to grow his kingdom.

The evil bishop was defeated, and the Trial was completed. Nick rescued the humans of Zura and orcs of Nagduros, and brought them home to his new city–Frosthaven. Together, they formed the reborn Noblefrost Kingdom, with Nick as its king.

But a bandit warlord rules the North from the shadows, and he will not allow a hero in his backyard–unless they are under his heel. Nick and his wives must grow their strength and gather allies, to stand up against this threat.

Will Nick keep his budding kingdom under the warlord’s radar, while gathering allies and growing? Or is his city of Frosthaven or his new allies already in danger?

I got about half way through this book (which shows over 700 pages, not the 488 listed here) and bailed. If I could describe the book in one word, that word is "bloated".

Everything is described in too much detail. Things that could be easily conveyed in a paragraph instead take pages. At one point, the current harem members discuss planning for their builds, and instead of the author showing us what the skills would be, they discuss them for pages at a time. So what could have been a paragraph, instead was multiple pages of the various women discussing the application of said skill.

The description bloat just wore me down. This book should have been at most, 500 pages. I will not be continuing this series.

I was listening to this as an audio book during the slow parts of my shift at work. I regularly go 5+ hours not seeing or interacting with anyone, and I still stopped it at the ~75% mark and just listened to nothing instead.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the first book, but it had gotten better as it went along so I figured that I would try the second one. But it seems that all of the author's bad habits not only continued into this book, but they all got substantially worse. There are entire chapters of pointless meandering over what skill a character to pick, or explanations of things that won't matter but the end of the explanation, and constant near non sequiturs where the characters just decide to go off and do something that doesn't matter to the story. Most of those non sequiturs feel more like the author had a cool idea for a chapter or two, started writing it, got bored, and then just wraps it up to move along to the next 'cool idea' he had where he does the exact same thing. And rather than just cutting it from the story, he includes all of them.

I eventually had a moment where I just though "What is even going on anymore?" and the answer was that the characters were on a side quest to a side quest, for something that isn't relevant to any of the characters or the plot. And then I sat back and thought about the rest of the story and realized that the majority of the book had consisted of things that should have just been skipped past and briefly summarized in a paragraph or two, that was when I just gave up on the book.

The audio book is 20 hour and 30 minutes long, and maybe 3 hours of that are important to the plot or characters. I'm not saying that this book needed to only be the highpoint of the story, just action and climaxes. I'm saying that the slow moments were completely pointless to the story and should have been removed. The author really needs to read some slower stories, ideally some slice-of-life, to learn how to write slower paced low-scale scenes that actually add to a story.

Slow start but strong finish

Or at least enjoyable. As stated the beggining felt a little stilted to me. Covering the treck back through the tower and some of the latter floors felt like a bit of a grind. The last floor and there after were fine. Some before that felt like just a thing in the way of progress. In a similiar vein, at the time in those early chapters at least, I wasn't all that interested in his inheritance challenges. Was it too much all together? Unclear.

What I can say is that the book really picks up after that. It had all my favorite elements from this author. By the end of this book, I found myself wishing the book had begun at the end of the tower. Obviously I'm reading the next book when it comes out.

The only thing I'm concerned with is the sheer amount of loose ends. There's enough to fill a whole other book and more. Hopefully the story doesn't get bogged down with too many.

Side note: some or at least one commented on the system and doing things through it. I think it's fine as long as the more logistical paragraphs are metered out appropriately. Just don't make it feel like you're reading a manual and that it enhances what the MC is doing it should work. Outside of that, the point is that the system aids and shapes their lives, not run it. And there's a medium for it to be earned. Wanting more would be seeking more of a crafting story. Not a problem, just not this story's genre.

Wonderful story

Really enjoyed the second installment of this story. The world is very vivid with a combination of different ways for people to get strength. I thought that part was pretty cool. Also the characters were very unique and believable. I liked all of their characters and while the MC was powerful at no point did I feel he was too overpowered or the opposite. I'm enjoying the pacing and I'm really looking forward to book 3

Worth the long wait!

I had to reread the first book to remember what a great story it was, and this one is no different. I'm happy at the time of review the third book is out! This book continues the path of our first one with good mixes of downtime and advancement, I love how the story is progressing!

Great harem world

JJ Bookerson blends together a great world and storytelling. Not all harem lits deliver, but the world building and characters speak to me. If you're looking for a series with boundless potential that hooks you from the start, look no further.

More of the same. If you enjoyed book 1 and wanted more, this is more. If you were left a bit cold by book 1 and wondered if things improved…they do not.
