“Love is a gamble. You’ll never be able to predict whether you have a bad hand or a good one until you start playing.” Puma
Normandee Tribune dedicates her life to saving the lives of children. While she loves her job, it doesn’t fill the void of not being able to have the one thing she desires more than anything—a family of her own.
Amid her fertility struggles, she’s forced to come to terms with the reality that she may have put her heart in the hands of the wrong person. Things begin to shift after she’s reunited with the knight in shining armor who once helped her during a devastating loss. Now, Normandee is left with hard decisions only she can make.
Tycen Newell had everything a man could ask for... A beautiful fiancée and a son he adored. However, a tragic accident uncovers an unforgivable secret and betrayal from the people he thought he could trust. Revenge is the only thing on his mind when crossing paths with the beautiful doctor who turned his world upside down. Somehow, she manages to find her way into not only his bed, but his heart as well.
It’s hard to trust when you’ve been hurt before. It’s even harder to love when you’ve never experienced the real thing. Normandee is determined to keep her heart on lock, but Tycen has other plans for her.
Lawd the dysfunction with these families! Whew!!! 🤯
Now Miss Normandee worked my nerves more than a lil bit! Sis, how are you a whole doctor, but allowing that scrub Marquiese and yo momma to control you like a damn puppet on a string huh? You knew that man meant you no good, but you stayed and for what? Just to find out that he was the piece of ish you believed all along? Ughhh…. 😤 And yo damn momma…. Where the hell she come from with that cater to yo man ish, even if it's to your own detriment? Especially when her man is for the streets! 👀😡 Those two of them tore down her self-esteem and made her believe that she was less than. All she was good for was submitting to her man, and damn her thoughts, emotions, or feelings. Normandee believed she was not worthy of love or being loved, due to the toxic mess they put in her head. 💔 Meeting Tycen was not a pleasant experience for either of them, but they kept bumping into each other and the chemistry was brewing hot.
Tycen was dealing with the pain of ultimate betrayal from his fiancé, finding himself in a jam and getting locked up, then lingering trauma from his mother’s abandonment, had him angry as hell, and ready to risk it all. With everything he was going through a relationship was the last thing on his mind, but there was something about Normandee that he just couldn’t shake. Even with all her baggage, and indecisiveness he wanted her bad. Any normal man would have walked away with all the ish she put him through, but he knew in his heart that she was worth it.
Normandee finally got the courage to leave her situation with Marquise, after witnessing his dirty deeds firsthand. She decided that she would take time for herself and learn what she wanted for her next relationship. However, Tycen was putting on the pressure. So, she laid it all out for him telling him what she would and wouldn’t accept and wanted a mighty love. Yeah sis, but where was all this rah rah with Marquise’s bum ass? 👀🤷🏾♀️ She called Tycen out and made him step up if he wanted to be in her space.
They were super cute once they got on one accord, and the love story began. I enjoyed the close bonds with the friend groups of both Normandee and Tycen, along with Tycen’s parents.
I knew Demarco was bitter and jealous of Tycen, but damn! But why when you were in the wrong? Then Tycen’s old egg donor causing a scene was something else too. He is so much better without her. Ughh…..
Now, I hope Puma and Murk get a story next. All that fussing pretending they don’t like each other, when they obviously do. Both are terrified of love and commitment, but I have a feeling it will be a great thing for them if they allow it. Good job!! 👍🏾👍🏾
Have to admit 18% into the book i wanted to throw my tablet across the room! This girl frustrated me so much!
However, on the Strength of Kami, I pushed through, and boy, am I glad I did!
If this writer does nothing else, she is going to have you in your feelings.
A few chance encounters kept thowing these 2 strangers in each other's path, but the timing never seemed right.
🤣 It was this for me: "All you have to do is communicate with me, love. If at any point you want to walk away, just say the word. I’ma tell you hell no, but you can at least talk to me about it. Communication is key,”
🤔 Meena kinda got away with murder and there was no closure for Tycen and his non-son.
Puma and Murk need their own story, and the author confirmed their story is up next!

I said what I said and as always: don't take my word for it. Read the book, form your own opinions, and support your authors!
This was the first book I've read from this author and I was not disappointed. I love to see men on they grown and sexy, especially black men. Tycen was being played for a fool by his woman and his family. He saw how Normandee was being mistreated and offered to rescue her despite all the BS he was going through. Sometimes you just know. There were twist after twist, hit after hit and these Tycen stood ten toes down. I was originally annoyed Normandee was portrayed the way she was and she got on my nerves, but verbal abuse can be worse than physical abuse. I'm impatiently patiently waiting on Puma's book because I'm sure her story will be lit too.
This was my first read by this author so I read a sample of the book and was intrigued so I decided to download it. I had high hopes for this book after reading a sample, but I can’t say it completely delivered. This book had so much potential with the storyline, but the first 40% of the book kind of fell through for me. First, I almost DNF several times because the story dragged on to the point of redundancy. Second, there were several inconsistencies with the stories timeline throughout the book and it made it a little hard to follow along at times. The main reason I kept reading to the end was because I would always get to a point where a scene had me wanting to keep reading to see what would happen next.
In the beginning of the story, I wasn’t really feeling the FMC as she was like a naive doormat for her fiancé and allowed that man to talk to her and down to her anyway he felt and I didn’t like that at all. I hate that it took so long for her to leave him especially after he left her alone to deal with a miscarriage. It was almost like she didn’t know her self worth and her mother didn’t help the situation because she was a trash mother with the way she talked to and treated her daughter. The FMC did eventually redeem herself when she finally left that man alone but she was still a little annoying with how she initially handled the MMC when their paths crossed again after she was single again. She was punishing him for crimes he didn’t commit toward her and I didn’t like that.
Now the MMC was dealt a bad hand from the beginning of the book that resulted in him losing a child and his freedom for a bit. It’s crazy how family will treat you worse than a stranger on the street, but this was his experience it’s his cousin and the animosity from his cousin truly made no sense.
I did love the connection between the main characters and the friendships they had with their best friends. Both Tycen and Normandee were genuine people and they deserved the love they each had to give. I liked how they both protected each other when it was necessary and how he didn’t give up on her even though she tried to run from her feelings. I also appreciated that they helped each other heal from their past hurts. They truly deserved their happily ever after.
I would rate this book a mid 3 stars because there were so many times that I wanted to stop reading but the good parts seemed to mostly override the bad parts, the inconsistencies and the redundancy.
Normandee worked my nerves, she was too grown to be so silly, life dumb and immature. She has not one solid reason to be with her ex. The situation with her and her brothers were confusing, why weren't they close growing up, why didn't they stick up for each other? I wish authors start researching things they try to write about, Tycens story irritated me for multiple reasons, firstly his club obviously has surveillance, that is the first thing his lawyer and people should have checked, he wouldn't have gone to jail for two years. Secondly his ex wouldn't be able to sell his property if both of their names was on it, thirdly, if he had been in Tylers life since birth, signed the birth certificate and only recently learned he wasn't his father, legally Tyler is his son and they wouldn't have been able to just take him from him without going to court. It would be different if he just wanted to sign over his rights, then again he didn't even fight for him. The whole Demarco situation was lame because he should have been handled in, he was just a story filler. The whole being shot by him at the baby shower was so lame and cliche, wasn't Murk in the streets? He should have been and took care of that situation. This story was kind of hard for me to finish because I got bored often. Please research and stop making these weak, whiny, life dumb female characters that's always a damsel in distress and need to be saved and loved by somebody to finally love themselves, it's annoying.
Unfortunately, so many authors think that we as readers have short memories. Well that’s not the case for me. Normandee worked my nerves the majority of this book then miraculously got her self together at the end. The fact that she put up with all of that disrespect and cheating from Marquis and was still with him said a lot about her self esteem. Then she turned around and gave Tycen hell. Make it make sense. Then it was redundant. The author kept telling us in every chapter why Normandee was putting up with all of that nonsense from Marquis like that will make it alright.
I loved the story of Ty and Normi. Normi got on my nerves for most of the book but I loved the relationship between three two. I gave it 3 stars due to some minor mistakes: Ty’s chapter saying two years later but then within the chapter they can’t staying 3 years ago. Then in the chapter before that Normi promised to attend dinner with her brother but that happens after the 3 year fast forward along with the cruise Normi mentioned earlier in the book. But other than that the book was nice.
Normandee has to be the most patient person on earth to endure the bull she did in the name of family and love. She needed Tycen like she needed her last breath ! Puma is such a beautiful friend. I love reading about good healthy female friendships as well as male relationships and Tycen and Normandee definitely had two great friends.
There are stories that will take you on a ride and this is definitely one of those stories. I ended up giving this a 3.5/5. I found myself yelling (not just in my head...I was legit talking to the book) at the FMC to stand up! She was a whole pediatric doctor letting a man that clearly wasn't worth her time run all over her. He wasn't there for her when she needed him for the small things like minor car trouble and he definitely wasn't there for her when it came to coping with major losses. When he should have been with her (his fiancé) he was off having a pity party for himself.
The FMCs mother was just an awful human being. How can someone teach their daughter to accept mediocracy and being belittled at every turn just to be able to say "I'm in a relationship?" I would rather be single and content than to be in a relationship feeling miserable and alone. And the way her mother talked to her...disgusting! Had me side eyeing her father (although he wasn't much better as a person) for not protecting her from her mother.
I will say (for me) it seemed to go on past the point that I would have expected to be the ending. It was still an enjoyable read. I will say that I am looking forward to the story of the best friends of the MCs. Their interactions with one another were very entertaining.
Man oh man, I really enjoyed this story overall. I love a story about a woman bossing up and leaving a nothing a** 🥷🏾 behind. Throw in an oops or secret pregnancy and I’m all in.
This story had a lot going on and for the most part it flowed well. There were small plots that didn’t make sense for me, which is why I rated it 3 stars instead of 4. The near death stuff, especially that late in the story was unnecessary in my opinion. Things with the couple were basically moving well, we didn’t need any additional fluff for drama sake.
If anything, keeping with the previously established drama like the triangle involving the exes would’ve made sense. But the after life conversation and magical healing of long term child emotional abuse seemed a bit too Pollyanna.
On the other hand, please give Puma and Murk their own story. I loved them and would love more.
HOWEVER, the first thing this guysaid to her was “when are you gonna leave that n****?” Who the hell are you? My personal life is none of your business. Then he begins to proposition her with sex. Sir, your son and fiancé you literally broke up with are still in the hospital. Maybe take some time for yourself before trying to have sex with other people. Don’t even get me started on the FMC’s man. You manipulative, sweaty, greasy, basement dwelling son of a b*tch. I have nothing to say to him. Anyways, the MMC is related to her patients. Let’s keep it professional please tf

Q: What do you do when you find out the child you raised for 12 years is not yours? What if you find out he is your cousin's child?
A. You move on and find a love that is truly for you.!!
Tycen, engaged and raising his son like a good man, gets a call that his kid and fiancé has gotten into a car accident. He gets to the hospital and after talking with a doctor a giving blood finds out that the boy he thought was his, could not possibly his.
Normandee, is currently in an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship. Weeks after delivering bad new to Tycen She find herself in a parking lot being rescued by him.
This story was sweet, passionate, diabolical and all around a messy good time lol. Let's start with Normandee, she was raised by a mother who taught her to be a man's doormat until he really loves love. Especially for a man with stability and a good job. Marquise was more than that though, he was a liar, cheater, deceiver and heart breaker lol okay let me stop. He was a piece of work though that did not deserve my girl. Even though she started out with no backbone, I was proud of her and the way she finally stood up for not only herself but her new man Tycen.
Tycen was exactly what Normandee needed in a man, life partner and father to her children. He was sweet, stable, he talked her through it, put her through the mattress and every other surface he could find lmao, ohk ohk, he was a good man Savannah!! I love how he saw Normie was she was and met her where she needed him, he didn't try to change her he allowed her to grow and showed her exactly what a real man looked like.
My biggest take away from the book was that timing is everything. Despite trying and failing for years to do what she felt women were made to do, it happened for her naturally and with an overflow!! It shows that in the right time, with the right person and in the right conditions a rose will grow from the concrete and I loved it.
I am new to Kami Work but baby she did this now I am going down the rabbit whole because I need more!! Perfection!!GO Read this!!
(3.5⭐️) Whew. I can understand how our parents’ voices become our internal compasses and cause us to sometimes tolerate certain things we never would have otherwise. And that was the case for Normandee. Her mother instilled in her to essentially be a doormat and I swear from like page 2 I just wanted her to STAND UP! It took her way to long (like almost the first half of the book) to get herself together. I also didn’t like how she kept doing Tycen either. After she disappeared the last time i would have been ok with him leaving her where she was. With that said though, I enjoyed watching them love on each other once she finally stopped running and allowed herself to be loved. I loved the friendships they each had (Puma & Murk are wild and I’m looking forward to their story). I will say that the timeline was all over the place. I feel like every time a new chapter started it would be like 2 months later. And then the person who was pregnant (no spoilers), swear her pregnancy was like 3yrs long so I would have liked a bit more consistency there. There were lots of spiritual soliloquies and what felt like soap box moments so if that’s not really your thing you might not like.
This book gave me so many tears and giggles!!!… I enjoyed this book from beginning to the end!!!…Some of things hit close to home!!!…Some of them provided you with a new respect for God’s timing!!!… The family dynamics was one for books and a lot of healing was needed in Normandee’s family and I love how this book showed that even if you have a healthy household, the sense of abandonment can still weigh you down!!!…Tycen definitely went through it and I didn’t think he would bounce back back when he found out his son was not his!!!… Tycen and Normandee was a breath of fresh air together and showed that no matter how put together you were on the outside, your whole mental and spiritual being can be in crumbles!!!…
This is my second read by Kami and one of my bookclub reads for the month. I felt so bad for Normandee because she really wanted a baby with her boyfriend Quise. The way Quise acted in this book made me so mad especially the part with his baby mama. I was so happy that Normandee decided to leave that relationship. Normandee mother really made me so mad throughout the book. I also feel bad for Tycen because finding out your son is not biological yours that way is so heart breaking. I was so happy when Normandee and Tycen finally got together and start the family they wanted. Overall this book was a great bookclub read and I look forward to the discussion.
I loved Normandee & Tycen! First let’s say, I loved how she is an accomplished pediatric surgeon & shes BLACK!!!! Marquise was a B-“-“- & Demarco & Menna was scandalous. I loved Malik from the beginning so to see his ending made me smile! Normi & Ty had this pull & I loved how they centered God in their relationship! I’m glad she found her voice & I’m glad she was able to be his safe place! I want to dive more into Puma & Murk! This book was page after page full of excitement. I couldn’t put it down! I loved it!!!!
I can see the growth in Kami’s writing and that’s always a good thing. I really enjoyed this one….it frustrated me at times because I wanted Normi to stand up but turns out she just needed a push from the right one. I loved Tycen from page 1 and that just grew as the story went on. I will say I wish there was more around his mama and also what happened with his cousin, like I understood the beef but I just needed more clarification on when things went bad. I was stressed out towards the end but I loved the way everything came together!!
I was going to give this 4 stars but I hate how the author handle the Tyrell storyline. Like, Tycen really never called him or nothing. This was a child you created a bond with and Tycen was the only father figure he known. Imagine he get into an accident where he needed surgery & to go through all that & poof the dad you thought you know not only is he not your dad but then he disappeared on you and never spoke to you again???
This was a cute story but that part really had me mad throughout cause I was waiting for Tycen to at least reach out to him.
Baby, Tycen did not come to play when it came to Normadee. She could run all she wanted to but he was chasing after her like a kid who missed the bus! Watching these two fall in love after dealing with their trash exes was a beautiful thing. The ending... So emotional, but utter perfection.
2.5 ⭐️🌶️🌶️ All I can say is I really disliked the FMC and how she was so dumb and didn’t know her worth for the first half of the book. The MMC is really what made the book. This is my first book from this author, but it was all over the place if you ask me. The second part of the book is what gave it the two stars.
I just love them!!! I be nervous about time jumps, but this one wasn’t bad. Boy, the big G will block some stuff that isn’t right. I’m just glad she didn’t get stuck in that situation. Such a great read. Puma and Murk got next 👀🙏🏽
everything about tycen and normandee’s love story was *chef’s kiss* 🤌🏽😍 from beginning to end, i was HOOKED! stories like theirs make me fall more and more in love with love ❤️
absolutely loved this book, can’t wait to get into more books by this author 🤩🤩🤩
I very much enjoyed Tycen and Normandee's love journey. The way they openly communicated and came with expectations and boundaries. When they overcame their hangups, their relationship was so healthy and envy worthy.

Normandie and Tycen 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Loved their story and I love these type of AA romances. Realistic stories showing BW and BM being loved properly. Highly recommend.
I was not a fan of the narrator. She came off monotone but it could also be the development of the character.

Kami Holt delivers an emotional and layered romance in Count on You, a story that explores love, betrayal, and second chances. With two protagonists carrying deep wounds from their past, the novel unfolds into a journey of healing, trust, and unexpected love.
Normandee Tribune is a dedicated doctor, passionate about saving lives but struggling with her own heartbreak—her fertility issues and a failing relationship. Her world shifts when she crosses paths again with Tycen Newell, a man whose life was shattered by betrayal and loss. As they navigate their painful pasts, they find themselves drawn to each other, but love isn’t easy when trust has been broken before.
One of the novel’s strengths is the emotional depth of the characters. Tycen, in particular, is a compelling figure—his pain, anger, and eventual vulnerability make him an engaging lead. However, his dynamic with his mother felt unfinished. A resolution, even if subtle, would have added more depth to his personal growth.
While the romance was passionate and rewarding, Normandee’s character could be frustrating at times. Her indecisiveness and internal struggles made her difficult to root for in some moments, but by the end, she found her strength, making her journey worthwhile. The delivery scene, considering all she had endured, was a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion to her arc.
The inclusion of Jamaican culture through Tycen’s father was an interesting touch, but the execution of the dialect felt inconsistent. Rather than seamlessly integrating Patois into the dialogue, it sometimes felt like an afterthought, which could have been improved with more thorough research.
Overall, Count on You is an emotional and compelling romance with strong themes of love, loss, and resilience. Despite a few narrative gaps, it delivers a heartfelt story that keeps readers invested until the very end.
