Devastated by her mom’s sudden disappearance and the evidence pointing to suicide, seventeen-year-old Noelle, an aspiring ballet dancer, doesn’t believe her mom would ever have taken her own life. She undertakes her own investigation to find out what really happened to her mother.
Meantime, Noelle is dealing with growing romantic feelings for Ravi, her best friend and fellow dancer. And she’s worried about her little sister, Whitney, who won’t talk about why she doesn’t want to visit their dad.
Threaded throughout the novel is also the story of Savannah, a young woman whose escape from an abusive marriage nearly two decades earlier turns out to be connected to Noelle’s investigation.
What would you do if your mom suddenly disappeared and everyone was convinced that she committed suicide?
Noelle didn't have much to worry about besides her upcoming dance recitals and trying to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer. That is, until her mother suddenly vanishes and the authorities are convinced that she committed suicide. Unwilling to accept this as the truth, Noelle starts to dig into her mother's mysterious past and starts to uncover darker secrets than she ever could have imagined. As she investigates her mom's disappearance, other elements of her life also unravel, which causes Noelle to feel as though she is falling apart herself.
I have to start this review out by saying that this book contains a lot of triggering topics that often come out of nowhere. The shock factors of some of these events had me gasping, but I feel that some of these things could be really devastating to some if they aren't ready for it. If you don't want the list of trigger warnings, skip to the next paragraph. This book includes depictions of domestic violence, obsessive drinking, pedophilia, racism, discussions of suicide, and other kinds of abuse. Some parts of this book were really hard to palate, but it does a great job of discussing many of life's hard topics.
I think that it is super neat that Noelle and her best friend/crush, Ravi, are both ballet dancers. After playing a ballerina in a theatre performance, the subject of ballet dancing has quite intrigued me. Reading about Noelle and Ravi's duet they were prepping was one of my favorite parts of this novel, despite the fact that it had nothing to do with the main plot.
Ravi is a Hindu from India I believe, and I loved this books portrayal of his overbearing parents and how controlling they are of his life. They place heavy expectations on Ravi about where he will go to college, what type of a career he will pursue, and the types of girls he is allowed to date. This portrayal of Indian American parents was super authentic, and I found this to be a great subplot that added a ton of tension between Ravi and Noelle. Ravi was definitely my favorite character, and I enjoyed seeing him grow the courage to stand up to his parents after years of being the angel child.
The main plot about Noelle's missing mother and Savannah's abusive relationship really kept me flipping the pages. Many parts of this book were super predictable, but I was still so intrigued to see how all the different subplots were going to turn out that I read this book in one sitting. The ending wasn't the most satisfying, but I love how realistic it is. It isn't often that we get all the answers in real life, so I thought it was cool that this book left a ton unanswered.
I don't want to say too much about Whitney's side arc, but it broke my heart immensely. I did really enjoy seeing Noelle step up as a mother figure to her little sister during this tough time. I also adore how Whitney loves Ravi. It is so cute that Noelle's little sister enjoys spending time with her big sister's best friend.
I also want to comment on the double meaning of the title. "Missing Mom" most obviously refers to the fact that Noelle's mom vanished without a trace, but it also can be attributed to the fact that Noelle also misses her mom a ton. Her mother was her best friend, so it breaks her heart to think about anything happening to her. I dunno, I just think the title of this book is really neat.
Overall, "Missing Mom" was a fast-paced mystery/thriller that was filled to the brim with all kinds of exciting subplots that had me rapidly turning the pages. I love how it deep dived into many tough topics such as abusive relationships and racial prejudices. I didn't expect this book to be filled with such in depth topics, but I'm not complaining. Noelle and Ravi were enjoyable characters and I don't regret spending an afternoon learning about them and their passion as dancers. I'm sure that many people who like darker thrillers that are reflective of real life would have a great experience reading this one.
"Missing Mom" by Lynn Slaughter is a gripping and emotional novel that tells the story of Noelle, a 17-year-old aspiring ballet dancer who is devastated by her mother's sudden disappearance. The evidence points to suicide, but Noelle refuses to believe that her mother would ever take her own life. Determined to uncover the truth, Noelle embarks on her own investigation, navigating the complexities of her relationships with her best friend and fellow dancer, Ravi, and her little sister, Whitney, who is struggling to cope with their family's situation. As Noelle digs deeper, she uncovers a connection to Savannah, a young woman who escaped an abusive marriage nearly two decades earlier, adding an intriguing twist and suspense to the story.
I love how the characters in this story are well-developed and made to be relatable. Noelle's determination and vulnerability make her a compelling character, while Ravi's supportive and gentle nature makes him an endearing love interest. Whitney's quiet strength and inner turmoil are also noteworthy, and the character of Savannah added a beautiful suspense to the story, explaining themes of trauma, survival, and healing. I was fascinated with the author's style of writing, considering that she wrote the stories in a suspenseful and emotionally resonant way.
As I read through the story, I was deeply drawn to Noelle's journey, feeling her pain, frustration, and determination to search for the truth. I found myself rooting for Noelle as she navigated her challenging circumstances, and the connection between her story and Savannah's past made the story come alive. The explanation of the complexities of family relationships by the writer taught me how negative family experiences can affect a person's way of life. I wholeheartedly give the "Missing Mom" a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
There was no part of this book that I disliked. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy compelling fictional stories, particularly those who appreciate stories about mystery, personal growth, and the power of resilience. This book would also be suitable for young adult readers and adults alike, especially those who have experienced loss or trauma, considering that it'll uplift them.
Mystery mixes with thrilling moments, a quick pace, and more than a few triggers to create a deep and grabbing read.
Noelle is in the middle of dance class, when she's suddenly pulled to the side with the news that her mother never picked her younger sister up as scheduled. Since her mother never misses anything, Noelle knows something is up. When her step-father and dad are finally in the loop, it becomes clear that something is very wrong and the police are pulled in. But the police don't seem to be getting anywhere. Noelle refuses to let things lie and does her best to find out where her mother is... or if she's still alive. But her digging takes unexpected turns, and these expose a dark side Noelle could have never guessed existed.
First off, there are quite a few triggers in this read (domestic abuse, pedophilia, tendencies toward suicide, and more). These are handled well and don't go into huge detail. They do, however, have a tendency to suddenly pop-in and surprise. Still, they meld into the tale flow well and simply make this a much more serious read than I first expected it would be.
That said, while reading the first chapter or so, I did wonder if this would be good for middle graders (obviously not after hitting the above triggers), since the writing creates a quick, easy read which flows right along. There isn't as much 'depth' as often found in YA reads and several plot twits were easy to see coming. Yet, the characters pack heart and are very sympathetic, making it no problem to be drawn into the tale all the way to the end. The tight writing turns into a strength, bringing across every moment with the potency it needs to propel the plot forward and keep those pages turning.
There's quite a bit to digest in during this story, and the mystery is thrilling. In other words, I can recommend this one to mystery fans, who enjoy tough issues along the way.
Summary Missing Mom is a teen and young adult mystery novel by Lynn Slaughter. The story begins when Noelle's mom fails to pick up Whitney at school. There is no way her mom would have forgotten to pick up her little sister, so she knew right then and there that something went terribly wrong. Her mom's sudden disappearance leaves the family in an emotional turmoil and the only trace her mom left is a note that the police believe to be a suicide note. Noelle doesn't believe her mom would ever leave them, so she does her own research. But amidst her goal in finding her mom, another terrible thing unravels concerning her little sister. In this story, Noelle juggles life at home, dance school, and her family crisis all at once while also searching for the truth about her mom's disappearance. On another timeline, 19 years ago, Savannah tells her story which is somehow connected to Noelle’s mom’s disappearance.
Review This has been truly a rollercoaster ride of a whole lot of different emotions. I don’t even know where to begin. There is too much going on in Noelle’s teenage life that if it were anyone in real life, I wonder how anyone can not go crazy. A missing mom, the devasting thing about her little sister and the shocking truth about her father? This family’s crisis is probably the worst crisis there can be in a family and Lynn wrote this story well while also depicting what happens in a dance class so realistically. I’ve had a very emotional reading experience with this book and despite the stress I had to go through upon discovering the shocking truths about two families in this dual timeline, I am giving this 5 out of 5 stars for its complexity and well- written narrative. It was hard to put down and I recommend it to readers who are into coming-of-age stories and mystery novels.
An exceptionally written YA novel that captivated this reader who is not a YA reader.
Author Lynn Slaughter has truly crafted something special with this book.
As a longtime mystery fan, the theme of the book and the back cover immediately drew me into the story of young Noelle’s desperate search for her missing mother. What I enjoyed the most was the author’s handling of the narrative, seamlessly shifting between Noelle’s determined present-day investigation and poignant flashbacks that offered deeper insights into her mother’s life. Slaughter made this so easy to follow.
Throughout the story, this reader felt Noelle’s anxiety and unwavering resolve as she navigates the complexities of the police investigation and tries to comfort her little sister, Whitney. The emotional depth she brings to each character is remarkable, allowing you to truly connect with their struggles.
The family issues were confronting and handled beautifully and honestly, which the author skilfully weaved in relevant social issues and explores the intricate dynamics of Noelle’s family, including her relationships with both her stepfather and her biological father.
Despite these layers, the pacing remains tight and interesting. I found myself completely engrossed from the very first page, eager to uncover each new clue alongside Noelle.
This is not just a mystery, it is a good mystery that is a captivating exploration of grief, resilience, and the enduring power of family.
If you like a good mystery, a different ending from the norm, I highly recommend it.
Noelle's life was on track, she had three loving parents - her dad, stepdad, and mum, she had her younger sister Whitney and her ballet. Everything was going well until one day, her mum didn't come home. Noelle knows something is off as her mum just wouldn't disappear on them, she also wasn't suicidal as the police believe she killed herself. With the help of her friend and ballet partner Ravi, Noelle goes on a journey to discover what happened to her mother. In doing so though Noelle will discover that her mum who never talked about her past, had a good reason not to as her mum's name isn't even her real name. What happened to her mother and why did her mum change her name? The book then jumps back to 20 years ago when we meet teenage Savannah. Savannah has gotten into a relationship with Mack. A relationship that will start to become an abusive one and it can only end two ways - either she can escape or in a body bag. Has Noelle's mum's past decisions come back to haunt her and is that why she has vanished? The other storyline that happens in this book is that of the sexual abuse of one of the characters. Missing Mom by Lynn Slaughter was a good edgy YA thriller read and an indie diamond in the rough. In Missing Mom, Lynn Slaughter delivers a gripping and thought-provoking YA thriller that masterfully weaves together past secrets, present danger, and emotional trauma, making it a hidden gem in the genre.
Lynn Slaughter’s Missing Mom is a compelling young adult mystery that masterfully weaves suspense, emotion, and personal growth. The novel follows Noelle, an aspiring ballerina whose world is upended when her mother suddenly disappears. As she searches for answers, a second narrative emerges, set nearly two decades earlier, told from the perspective of Savannah. Their stories intertwine in ways that keep readers guessing until the very last page.
What makes this novel truly stand out is its emotional depth. Noelle is a wonderfully layered protagonist—determined, vulnerable, and fiercely loyal. Her relationship with her younger sister and best friend Ravi adds warmth and authenticity, while the mystery of her mother’s disappearance creates a gripping tension that never lets up. Slaughter’s deep understanding of ballet is seamlessly integrated into the narrative, making the dance sequences feel both poetic and symbolic.
If there’s one minor critique, it’s that the police seem quick to accept the theory of suicide, which may frustrate readers who want to see a more thorough investigation. However, this only fuels Noelle’s determination, making her journey all the more compelling.
Overall, Missing Mom is a must-read for fans of YA mystery, particularly those who love strong female leads and emotionally resonant storytelling. Perfect for readers who enjoyed A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder or We Were Liars. Rating: 5/5
Missing Mom by Lynn Slaughter is a captivating novel that tells the story of Noelle, a 17-year-old ballet dancer living with her mom Joanna (Savannah), her sister Whitney, and stepdad Greg. When her mom fails to pick up her sister from day camp, she's declared missing, and a police investigation concludes with a possible verdict. Dissatisfied with the report, Noelle sets out to investigate Greg and her dad Chris, both of whom display suspicious behavior. With the help of her best friend Ravi, Noelle uncovers clues that suggest her mother's past may hold the answer to her disappearance.
I was thoroughly engrossed in this dual-timeline young adult mystery with a touch of teenage romance. The book's chaotic start grabbed my attention, making my heart race with anticipation. Although I guessed some plot points, the story was still thrilling and mind-blowing. The pacing was perfect, making it easy to follow.
The poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Paul Laurence Dunbar evoked sympathy for Savannah, who suffered abuse. Watching Noelle's life fall apart as she dealt with family struggles, including a family member's imprisonment for a pedophilic crime, was heartbreaking. Noelle's strength in facing judgment and shouldering family responsibilities was remarkable.
I love books that capture my attention from the start with chaotic events, and "Missing Mom" delivers. The author's ability to balance suspense, romance, and family drama makes for a compelling read.
Missing Mom starts off with a bang when 17 year old Noelle has to leave dance class early to go pick up her younger sister Whitney from daycamp. It turns out their mother never showed up to pick her up, something that is totally out of character. Noelle tries her best to remain calm and not scare her younger sister, but when she can't get in touch with her step dad and she remembers her father is out of town, she realizes she really needs to keep it together and file a missing person's report. After a few days the police come back with answers but not ones that Noelle feels are correct, in her eyes, her mom is still in danger, despite when the Police and her community think happened. Noelle decides to keep investigating, no matter how difficult and dangerous it may be, because she needs to find the truth, but in the midst of changes in her home life with her mom gone, her busy dance schedule, and a huge crush on her dance partner and close friend... she has a lot going on!
I'm only about 25% of the way in but it has been intense so far, making it a pretty quick read. There are also chapters written with a perspective of 19 years earlier interspersed throughout so I'm interested to see how that plays into the story. If you're looking for a YA thriller/mystery, this is definitely one to check out! Thanks to Simone at @booksforwardpr for sending this one my way!
Lynn Slaughter’s Missing Mom is a fast-paced and expertly crafted mystery that hooks you from the very first page. The novel follows Noelle, a high school ballerina whose mother vanishes without a trace. What initially appears to be a tragic suicide quickly begins to unravel into something far more sinister. As Noelle digs deeper, another voice from the past, Savannah, emerges, bringing forth secrets that will change everything.
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its dual timeline narrative. Savannah’s perspective adds an extra layer of intrigue, making readers question how her past connects to Noelle’s present. Slaughter also excels at building suspense—every clue, every red herring keeps you turning the pages.
I particularly loved Noelle’s friendship with Ravi. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their bond adds warmth to the story’s darker moments. The ballet setting is also beautifully done, with Slaughter using dance as a metaphor for discipline, control, and ultimately, resilience.
If I had to nitpick, I would have liked a little more development in the villain’s motivations, but this doesn’t take away from the overall experience. If you love mysteries with strong female protagonists, deep family secrets, and a dash of romance, this book is for you. Rating: 4.8/5
Missing Mom by Lynn Slaughter is more than just a mystery—it’s a deeply moving story about family, loss, and resilience. When Noelle’s mother disappears, she refuses to accept the official explanation and sets out to uncover the truth. At the same time, readers are introduced to Savannah, a young woman from the past whose struggles may hold the key to the present-day mystery.
Slaughter’s writing is incredibly immersive. Noelle’s emotions—grief, confusion, determination—are palpable, making her journey feel all the more real. I especially appreciated the novel’s exploration of family dynamics. Noelle’s relationship with her younger sister, Whitney, is beautifully portrayed, as is her complicated bond with her father and stepfather.
The mystery itself is well-plotted, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers engaged. However, what sets this book apart is its emotional weight. Even as Noelle chases the truth, she must also navigate the challenges of growing up, understanding her relationships, and defining who she is outside of her mother’s shadow.
This is a perfect read for those who enjoy mysteries with heart, similar to Sadie by Courtney Summers or One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus. Rating: 5/5
Mystery, thriller, suspense and romance all packed in this wonderful read by Lynn Slaughter. The story begins with Noelle's mom leaving without an explanation and her persistence in finding out the truth behind her mother's absence.
The organisation of the storyline through every chapter made the book such a masterpiece that it is. Lynn's choice of words clearly made her message delivered directly to her readers. Additionally, the parallel narrative builds suspense making the reader hooked from start to finish. It linked Savannah directly to the present day Noelle, which made the storyline more easy to grasp. Unfortunately, I wished there was more to the character building during the nineteenth years earlier narrative. Mack's backstory and his relationship with Savannah could have been given more chapters in the book. Regardless, the compilation of everything at the end was still enough to give us a good insight to what happened.
I think every young teen should definitely check out this piece by Lynn, as it gives them a glimpse of how to handle being in a situation such as Noelle's.
Lynn Slaughter's missing mom is a compelling, double story line which intertwines the story of Joanna's suicide and how her daughter, Noelle, copes during this time while trying to find out the truth behind her mother's death. Noelle refuses to believe suicide as the cause of her mother's death and takes it upon herself to look into the life of her mother while getting support from her friend Ravi, and trying to take care of her little sister.
Noelle's younger sister Whitney stood out in the story, being young she tried her best to hold up as much as she could, coupled with the fact that their mother remarried before her disappearance. As the story goes on, we get to know her reason for being cold towards their Dad, who was behaving inappropriate to her. Glad the law finally caught up with him at end. Above its thrilling mystery, the story explores romance and suspense which keeps the reader immersed from the first page to the last. Savannah's backstory together with the Noelle's present situation brought life to the book.
A must read for young people, especially as it motivates them to chase their dreams and also as it offers some moral themes to the readers.

Missing Mom is more that just a mystery, it's a powerful book about love, loss and resilience. Lynn really outdid herself with this one and it was fantastic. The book is tells us about this one family built on love and support. The book tells us Savannah who is Noelle's mother really loves and supports her irrespective of her choices and even extends it to her best friends, it tells us about how Savannah was not only a living mother but also a great friend and listener to everyone including Noelle's friends. Everything went South when her mother was reported missing and it was filed as suicide she felt she lost not only a mother but also a best friend. It takes resilience and support from her boyfriend Ravi to be able to investigate the circumstances behind her mother's case because she and her family weren't convinced her mother committed suicide. Lynn's writing is so engaging and descriptive and makes everything seem so real. I loved the way she narrated the story, it was fantastic! I would recommend the book for anyone who loves reading, young or old. The book was great, I hope I get to read more books from Lynn.
From the chilling prologue to its heart-pounding finale, Missing Mom by Lynn Slaughter is a YA mystery that never loses momentum. The story follows Noelle, a talented ballerina whose mother’s sudden disappearance sends her into a whirlwind of secrets, lies, and dangerous discoveries. Told in alternating perspectives between Noelle and a mysterious woman from the past, this novel is packed with tension and emotional depth.
Slaughter’s ability to create authentic teenage voices is one of the novel’s standout qualities. Noelle’s frustration with the adults around her—who seem too willing to accept her mother’s disappearance as a suicide—rings true, as does her unwavering determination to uncover the truth. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is impeccable, with each chapter pulling you deeper into the mystery.
If I had one complaint, it would be that some of the secondary characters could have been fleshed out more, particularly Noelle’s father. However, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise gripping book. Fans of thrillers like Pretty Little Liars or Two Can Keep a Secret will find plenty to love here. Rating: 4.7/5
Just like Missed Cue, this is all hits from Lynn Slaughter. As she delivers another wonderful piece to us readers. To me Missing Mom is basically about the complex relationships we see almost everyday in our families but better, as Noelle handled her mom's disappearance to the best of her ability.
The plot twist and characterization by Lynn will have you at the edge of each page. As you progress, more secrets are revealed, from her Dad's illness, to her Mom's relationship with Mack, the story was very unpredictable. Ravi's relationship with Noelle being a complicated one also added a lot of emotions to it. The split time line adds an additional understanding to the story. It makes the reader connect directly with Savannah's plight, one could say the characters felt real, as it could be easily related to real life scenarios.
Most definitely would recommend the book to readers of mystery, domestic fiction and suspense. Can't wait to read more works from Lynn.
Lynn delivers an emotionally charged novel that follows Savannah, a brilliant young woman who sacrifices her college dreams to marry her high school sweetheart, Mack. However, their marriage quickly turns into a nightmare, forcing Savannah to flee and rebuild her life. Years later, her sudden disappearance shakes her daughter Noelle, a talented ballet dancer, who embarks on a desperate search for answers. With the support of her best friend Ravi, Noelle uncovers painful truths while navigating her own journey of resilience. This novel masterfully weaves romance, mystery, and family dynamics, creating a deeply immersive reading experience. The characters are well-developed, and the story is both compelling and thought-provoking. While the novel features strong themes of love and perseverance, Mack’s character adds a layer of tension that makes the story even more gripping. I highly recommend this book, especially to younger readers, as it offers valuable life lessons. A captivating read from start to finish—I look forward to more from Lynn!
This book by Lynn gives a sense of reality in a way that makes you relate to the book making it relatable in our own world The book tells us about Savannah who married Mack right after high school, believing it was a dream come true despite their different financial backgrounds. Savannah who had planned to attend college with her best friend after highschool but later ended up marrying Mack immediately after highschool, she was discouraged by her best friend but she did not listen. Mack made Savannah cut ties with her friend, claiming she was a bad influence on their marriage. When Mack found out she disobeyed him, he beat her and that's when it dawned on Savannah Mack was not the sweet person she knew him as, she had to run away from home and even from her hometown to start again elsewhere where she later married twice. One could say the book highlights the problem women face in their early childhood that also affects how they see the world. It also lays emphasis on the strength women have and encourages them to be brave. Great work from Lynn.
Missing Mom, a dual-time YA mystery piece is a real masterpiece not only does it contains mystery it's packed with many emotions - love, resilience, loss. It definitely did not fall short in giving so many exciting and real moments. The book introduces Savannah as someone who is very intelligent and loved reading, we could see that from her success in highschool when she got a scholarship, she wouldn't get to explore her options because of her married where she suffered being caged from the outside world and abused domestically. The book also introduces Noelle, a ballet dancer, as the daughter of Savannah. She was a resilient young lady who did not give up having found out her mom went missing and the case filed as suicide. It also came as a shock when she discovered her dad was sexually abusing her younger sister. Lynn really outdid herself with this piece, it really encompasses the struggles young adults especially women have to go through in our world today and it also tells them they can be brave and strong. I really look forward to reading more books from Lynn.
Missing Mom, filled with suspense, describes the struggles of Noelle as she tries to find her mother who suddenly disappeared. Despite being told it was suicide by all the adults around her, she refuses to believe this and investigates deeply to find out the truth.
Immediately upon reading the first chapter you could tell that the book was for particularly young teens, and Lynn exceeded herself in passing her message across marvelously to the them making the book graceful yet intense. The way she blended Noelle's story with her dancing stood out to me. It added a whole different feeling to it, presenting the book as a dance of emotions. After finally finding out the truth behind Noelle' mother's death, the book reached its final act. I wished Lynn could have extended the ending, it would have given the story a more satisfying end.
Recommending the book to young readers and of course to fans of mystery and thriller.

It is not everyday you read a book that you can say this actually contains all what you like in a book, I don't know if it's me but this book by Lynn Slaughter was really great. It really contained a lot of twists, romance and even mystery, it basically contained everything you look for in a book. In the book you read about the problem a lady, Savannah, had in the earlier stages of her life when she was married which made her leave her first marriage and run far away to another city to start a new life and in this new city nobody knows who she really is. She starts a new family, marries again and even has two daughters, and she goes on to marry again to her recent husband Greg. Although a lot more could have been said about the journey through all her marriages, it still felt so real like you could feel the message it was passing across and it feels like you are actually a part of the book. It was really a fantastic book.
Missing Mom, a dual time mystery thriller written by Lynn Slaughter is a piece about the journey of a mother and daughter. The mother being Savannah and the daughter being Noelle, the book tells us the struggle Savannah faced as a young girl who got into an early marriage and suffered domestic violence it took great courage and the help of her best friend to enable her to pass through what she did. Talking about Noelle, also a young lady who had to take the responsibility of shouldering the responsibility of looking after her younger sister while also trying to uncover the mystery behind her mother's sudden disappearance and also finding the truth about her mom and who she really was. The book made me feel like I was a character in the book because it is very relatable to things that actually happen nowadays. I love how Lynn orchestrated this piece. It was really lovely to read. It was really worth it.
Immediately I saw another release from Lynn, I couldn't hold back my excitement. Being my 4th read from her I already knew what to expect but, this was much better. Noelle tries to balance her life while seeking for truths to her mother's disappearance. At that time she is practically the only one who believes that her mother didn't commit suicide. With the help of Ravi and her quick thinking, they dig deep into her mother's past to expose a whole lot of secrets which she wasn't expecting. The way Lynn acquints the readers to ballet using Noelle's dance class is worthy of note. The balance between Noelle's footwork and dance movements reinforces the story's emotional rythm. Also the plot will have the reader skimming through the pages trying to find out the next big thing in Noelle's mother past. Preferably for readers of all ages most especially the young avid readers and of course with interest in ballet.
Missing Mom by Lynn Slaughter is a YA thriller which takes us on a ride full of suspense, mystery, romance and emotions as Noelle's mother vanishes without any warning. Noelle, a high schooler and also a ballerina, takes it upon herself to find out the truth while trying to balance her academic and dance journey at the same time. Lynn's description of the dance by Ravi and Noelle, brought the book to life. Even from the way which Noelle handled the situation made it worth every page. The events that lead to the big reveal as to what actually happened to her mother kept me on edge with each chapter. With its dual storyline, it connects Noelle's present situation with events that occurred in the past, leading to her mom's disappearance. As a thriller packed with suspense, this book would have you engrossed in each chapter till the very end. Fans of mystery and domestic thrillers should definitely check it out.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
I loved this story. Well written and has so much depth to it. Will recommend to others
A Taut Psychological Thriller with Emotional Depth
From its chilling prologue to its unforgettable climax, Missing Mom is a psychological thriller that doesn’t just rely on twists—it builds an emotional connection that makes every revelation hit harder. Noelle’s investigation into her mother’s disappearance is full of suspense, but it’s the emotional stakes that truly make this book shine.
Slaughter excels at creating tension, both in the mystery itself and in Noelle’s personal life. The uncertainty surrounding her mother’s fate, the pressures of ballet, and the secrets lurking beneath the surface of her seemingly normal family all combine to create a story that feels both intimate and high-stakes.
This is a fantastic read for fans of The Lovely Bones and The Girl on the Train—an addictive mix of mystery, emotion, and psychological depth.
This was my first time reading a book by Lynn, and it was absolutely worth it. The mix of romance and mystery kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Savannah, who marries Mack after high school. While Mack’s car dealership thrives, their marriage turns controlling, with Mack isolating Savannah from her best friend and basically from the whole world. When she secretly reconnects with her friend, Mack discovers it and becomes abusive, leading Savannah to realize she must escape. She eventually builds a new life as a lecturer and mother of two daughters. I admired Savannah’s courage in standing up for herself. The book felt incredibly real and delivered an important message. I highly recommend it, especially for young adults especially women. Looking forward to more from Lynn!
This book talks about the struggle Noelle and her family had to go through with the discovery of the news of her mother's disappearance. The book also contains romance which was one of the things that made Noelle, one of Savannah's daughters to get through the tough time, her boyfriend Ravi was always there for them and even helped them around the house and was emotionally available for Noelle and her family. I really loved how the family never gave up on Savannah even after finding out about her past they did not stop believing she was out there somewhere even though the police had filed a case that she committed suicide but her family continued investigating, which eventually lead them to to the truth which was unexpected . I really enjoyed reading the book and I look forward to reading more books from Lynn.
