Hunks Who Puck

The Longest Pucking Year

Rate this book
Rule #1 of one-night Don't fall in love. (Duh.)

Rule #2: Don't let them find you. (It's a one-night stand, after all.)

Rule #3: DEFINITELY don't end up as their roommate. (See rules 1 and 2.)

The rules are obvious. And yet I broke all three.

When Beck sat next to me at that concert in LA, I thought it was just going to be one perfect night. The kind you remember forever but never repeat. Then he disappeared without a trace, and I told myself it was for the best.

But the universe had other plans.

Now he's my teammate on the Wildwood Wolverines hockey team AND my roommate for the entire freshman year.

Every morning, I wake up to his stupid gorgeous face.

Every practice, I watch him on the ice.

Every night, I lie awake wondering if he remembers how perfectly we fit together.

We're supposed to hate each other. So why does it feel like we're one heated argument away from picking up exactly where we left off?

The Longest Pucking Year is a new adult gay second chance romance featuring an MM pairing, forced proximity, and a one-night stand. It is a standalone novel existing in the shared world of the Somerset Seagulls and the Wildwood Wolverines. The Longest Pucking Year can be read by itself or along with the HUNKS WHO PUCK complete collection.

MM Romance
Hockey ONS
DNF @ 64%

2025 project: Picking up books I’ve gotten for free that are rotting away in my kindle…without reading the blurb.

Books like this make me want to quit reading and hide in a hole for a while because they are just so bad! The fact this is a second chance romance is hilarious and after DNFing it and reading the blurb?? Hate sex? These two hating each other at all??? WTF is this author on?

Ok so, we have Archer who is in LA to see a concert and I’m almost 99.9% sure this artist was supposed to be Taylor Swift based on the hints here and there but that’s not all that important. What is important is that Archer was supposed to go with his sometimes fuck buddy but he was stood up, on his birthday no less! To add insult to injury his ex sold his ticket to some rando, Beck, who shows up and sits next to Archer. These two have a moment looking into each other’s eyes, Beck gets Archer out of his comfort zone and they have a magical time at this concert. So magical that the night doesn’t end there and Beck takes him around LA and they have a one night stand. But alas! 😂 When Archer wakes up in the morning, Beck is gone but he left a note saying something urgent came up and left his number so they could keep in touch. From Archer’s POV, we get the sense he’s ok with this because they live across the country from each other and it was just a one time thing.

Except it’s not because these two end up at the same college in NYC, on the same hockey team and sharing the same dorm room!! And when Archer sees Beck he goes from not seeming to care about the ONS to absolutely hating his guts because “how dare he leave and not say goodbye in the morning? How dare he ghost me?” SAY WHAT? He literally left you his phone number and you chose not to call him. But ok whatever. 🙄🙄

From here it’s a bit weird. Archer is acting like Beck did him wrong and broke his heart even though it was ONE night and Beck starts antagonizing him on purpose and then they’re having really cringy wannabe hate sex, with their “throbbing members” and “slobbering” on each other’s assholes. It felt so forced because they didn’t actually hate each other and the sex scenes were cringy as all fuck. 💀🤦🏻‍♀️

This book really felt like a MF romance author’s first attempt writing MM because the actual names for things weren’t being used almost like there was an aversion to them. For example: manhood & member instead of cock/dick, sensitive or favorite spot for prostate etc. And there was no prep, just throbbing manhoods being bounced on by Archer. Also no talk of safe sex, condoms or lube. I looked this author up and Lina writes MF, MM and FF romance which I found shocking tbh just because this read so poorly.

I’m going to turn some of my highlights on because this one is a cringefest but I’ll leave you with this gem.

”Archer calls out my name in erotic despair and I can’t help but smile at his reaction.”

Say what? 👀

Note: this book reads like it was written for YA, but does have some spice so not ideal for either audience.

DNF at 83% after intense skimming

I tried to like this. It has a ton of tropes I enjoy. Ultimately the book was so scattered and the plot was so all over the place that I couldn’t get behind.

It also good to note that the description in the back of the book doesn’t match what the plot is.

I found the writing in this very juvenile, for the most part the characters and dialogue were fun, but their motivations made very little sense .

I just felt like everything was so scattered. It was hard to sometimes figure out who was speaking on the dual POV‘s.

Archer and Beckham have a great romance that begins earnestly and quickly develops into something sincere and emotional. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they are separated which leads to resentment. They find themselves on the same hockey team and their unresolved issues become a strong force, while their remaining chemistry remains.

Overall, this was a fun story with strong emotional moments and a beautiful love story.

The story & the romance were sweet. But the hockey talk was horrible. There were no lines or line changes. One of the side characters even begs to be subbed out. There is no subbing in hockey! There was a play that involved a fake out, and that's what it's called during play description. Not deke, fake out. The author has nearly two dozen hockey romances so you would think that the hockey play wou be more accurate.

This book was not great. I really did like both of the main characters, so it was disappointing that the book overall was such a miss.
Issues I had with the book:
-the blurb does not match up with the plot- MCs get together in the beginning, no pining.
-weird unmarked time jumps made it somewhat confusing at times.
-I never felt the MCs had much passion for each other, seemed mostly convenience and friendship. At one point it was mentioned in passing that it had been six weeks since they hooked up.
-Parents in this book were nonsensical. One MCs father wasn’t into hockey so MC had to prove it was worth it by his team winning the championship or the dad was going to stop paying for his college….. like what? Such manufactured drama.
-This author clearly has no idea how hockey teams actually work but yet included lengthy descriptions of games that did not move the plot forward.
-The word “member” was used 15 times in the book…. it was….a lot. However “lube” was mentioned 0 times.
-5+ typos/grammatical errors in book really took me out of the story.

This was my first book by this author, but I saw she has a lot of other books- I was really hoping for more.

Dnf @65%.
This book is so bad! I really should have read the reviews better, but I was blindsided by the great blurb.
So much weirdness in way too many pages. I didn’t understand Archer’s hostility, Beck left his phone number when he left. Since they weren’t really together (it was a single night), it is not really a second chance story. And they got back together in minutes. And then it went on and on and on. All of a sudden we have a strange camp in between, where the illustrious ex suddenly appears. But just beforehand Archer had a dreadful conversation with his mother. We completely forget about that and after they come back Beck’s mother is in their room yelling at them.
And then the words used in this book… Throbbing manhood 🤮 Sorry, no.

Dnf 10% for underdeveloped and cringey writing. (1/8/25)

So they meet at a Taylor Swift concert. I swear the concert (attempting to be vague enough to not name the musician) was described more than these characters and their clandestine first meeting

This is not good.

It was so close to being a 5star, but the hockey content was off. The terminology was incorrect, which was a little off-putting, as a hockey fan, but all in all, it was a great story that had me hooked. So, if you can overlook the hockey element, I'd recommend it.

I loved both Archer and Beck in this second chance, found family, enemies to lovers, angsty hockey mm romance.

DNF.

The writing wasn't great. The premise and characters were interesting but the writing kept distracting me from the actual story so I gave up.

I think this is my first second chance trope mixed with MM romance and I do not hate it at all. The instant chemistry that Beckham & Archer have is so cute. We start out by them meeting by fate at a concert. Archer is from a very small town in Kansas and has never been outside of it till now. By fate Beckham gets the seat right next to him. They have a very wonderful night at the concert together that leads to more wonderful night together back at Archer hotel room. The next morning Beckham leaves his number but isn’t in the bed when Archer wakes up. Archer pushes that out his mind and gets ready to for his next big experience, college in NEW YORK CITY. Again, fate has put these boys as roommates. We follow them as they don’t fight their attraction to each other, their troubles on and off the ice, and family drama for each. This becomes one of the cutest love stories I’ve read in a while. I love how Beckham spoils Archer. I cried, I laughed, I even kicked my feet up and squealed a couple times. Too cute!

Archer is about to see the best concert of his life but alone then Beckham sets beside him they hit it off have a wonderful night then Beck is just gone so Archer thinks its for the best until he not only meets his one night stand again trying out for the same hockey team as him and could it get any worse there stuck together in the same dorm room Freshman Year is going to be along one. Beck Archer hates his guts but there chemistry is still there soon there more then enemies but Archer isn't ready to announce to the world there together he's been hurt before and his parents well they have there idea of who he is. Beck has his own family turmoil and know amount of his wealthy parents money will fix it. Both Beck and Archer just want to be seen and herd at least they have each other and there friends.

I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

A feel good, matching souls story

Pay no mind to the “rules” in the About This Book. Those rules were never outlined…or even implied in this book. And I’m so happy they don’t. The “rules” imply one of these men are a playboy type character and both are the farthest thing from it.
Now, to get on with it, I LOVED this books characters. I love how incredibly self conscious Archer was because his life has always made him second guess everything. I love how Beck, on the outside, is a very self assured man who knows what he wants, but inside is just looking for someone to get him. And more than anything I love the Wolverine hockey team that made Archer and Beck realize both have people who care about them.
If I were to complain about anything it is that things are brought up that never really get concluded; I drew my own conclusions but maybe I was wrong. Sometimes I like things just spelled out for me.

Hockey Romance

Let’s start off with the characters Asher and Beck were well written, easy to love characters, the story was paced well and truly lovely and everything you want to read in a romance novel. The side characters were great and really leave you wanting to read their stories. So why the 3 star rating well it was painfully obvious the author did not research anything about hockey before writing this book and that’s a big problem for people like me who love to read but also love hockey. Nothing about the hockey part of this book was correct. So while I whole heartedly think you should read this book for the characters please go into knowing the goal is called an end zone, plays are called on the ice, they wear letterman jackets, it was all very American football and had zero to do with real hockey.

Sometimes I find myself impulsively downloading/buying books that are free or with a massive discount and this book was one of them. To be frank I do really need to stop for a moment and be a just a bit more discerning in my choices, because I swear the books that have one star ratings are usually the ones that I download during one of these times.

To be frank the book seemed like it was written for a young audience; but with really inaccurate sex scenes (and I know romance isn’t the place to find accuracy in regards to sex but this one was particularly terrible). Both the plot and writing seemed quite childish. Neither of the characters were particularly likeable.

So that’s a one star from me and another piece of my life claimed by a terrible book that I felt like I had to finish because I started it. I do really need to start DNCing the books I don’t like.

This was my 1st dive into this author and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed her writing.

This is a sweet story about 2 boys from very different ways of life meeting by chance and then ending up in a forced proximity situation that couldn't have turned out better than it did.

Watchin them fall in love with each other all while battling their own internal struggles as well as balancing school and hockey and their families made for a captivating story. They find everything they need in the other as well as a found family in their team and new friends. They find a home with each other and heal each other through their devotion and love and strength.

Beck and Archer are just too cute for words

Forever Kind of Love

Archer is spending his birthday alone at a concert or so he thought, until he meets Beck. Their brief time together was memorable but somewhat heartbreaking when he wakes up alone. When they are reunited as teammates as well as roommates, the tension between them ignites their passion with more intensity. This story was steamy, enjoyable and all-around entertaining. The dynamic between Archer and Beck was absolutely fantastic.

Beck & Archer are very cute together and the found family vibes were great. They have a nice meet cute and the tension between them at the start is good. There are good side characters that I enjoyed. I liked the lack of homophobia.

I struggled though with the hockey and some of the spice. There’s not a single mention of them using condoms or lube. Yes spit can be used once in a while but all the time??? And no condoms ever? The hockey just seemed off. Things just didn’t make sense with how many people were on the team or how it was structured.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Beckham and Archer meet at a concert and hook up after. Unfortunately family issues separate them. Then they are roommates and teammates. I like how they overcome the hurt of their separation and fall more in love with each other. Beckham tries to live up to his family's expectation but it can't be done without fault on Beckham's part. I'm glad he finds a way to stay with Archer and the team.

The Longest Picking Year

This is a beautifully written book. Usually hockey books are more focused on hockey, and this one is also. But it's so much more. It's about true first loves... Firsts in a lot of things. Archer is almost shy and Beck is not, but they gel. Family dynamics for both of them have shaped how they view other and themselves. It's sweet how Beck treats Archer. Hot too! Loved reading this book!

3.75 ⭐️ I found the overall story cute. On more than a few occasions I was scratching my head over the hockey terminology and descriptions. I don’t think it’s a book I’d ever reread, but I don’t feel like I wasted my time consuming this one.

In my opinion this isn’t really a second chance romance story. Some of the writing isn’t fabulous, but the story is cute and the characters are good.
