Happily Ever Mishaps #4

Hate The One You're With

Rate this book
A fiery second-chance, sizzling romance in which two former spouses are forced back into each other's lives—whether they like it or not.

My grandmother always had a flair for drama.

At eighteen, I was forced to marry so I could pay my college tuition.
Enter Caleb Cunningham: my best friend’s brother and Navy SEAL.
I needed my inheritance, he needed money to cover his dad’s hospital bills.
It seemed like a win-win.
The marriage didn’t last, but that’s okay. It was a marriage of convenience.
At least, that’s what I told myself.

Over a decade later, Grandma’s still pulling the strings from beyond the grave.

Her last wish? For me to live with my estranged husband for six months, or I lose everything—my company and my employees’ livelihoods included.

Now, I’m stuck with Caleb, the rugged, infuriating, and the man who once broke my heart. The deal is simple: he’ll stay with me for the next six months as long as I give him... well, everything.
He wants control.
He wants my grandmother’s penthouse.
And, of course, he wants the Bentley.

Caleb seems determined to make my life hell, and he’s enjoying every minute of it.

But if he thinks I’m going down without a fight, he’s got another thing coming. It takes two to make a marriage, and it’ll take two to crash it into the ground.

3.5⭐️ At eighteen, Caleb Cunningham agreed to marry Emmersyn Langley, his sister’s best friend, to satisfy her grandmother’s demands and help his family. A decade later, Emmersyn’s grandmother has one final wish - for them to live together as husband and wife for six months, or she loses everything.

I don’t often read marriage of convenience stories, so this was a really fun dive into that trope, especially when combined with some of my faves including second chance romance. While second chance can be difficult to execute, Hale did a great job of it here. It was a whole heck of a lot of fun to see how these former lovers turned into bitter enemies, and then to watch as they slowly but surely found their way back.

I loved how feisty these two seemingly well calm and well grounded characters were together, setting off sparks every time they had to interact. I am such a fan of banter, and this book definitely had some great moments. I am still laughing at one interchange involving a Bentley (IYKYK).

🎧 Sean Masters and Angelina Rocca did a fantastic job bringing these two boisterous characters to life. It was a pleasure spending a few hours with them, and they are exactly how I would imagine them to be.

While this is book four in the series, and I have not read any of the previous installments, this story functions well as a complete standalone (which is very rare). It’s easy to follow, without an over abundance of secondary characters.

Read if you like:
▪️marriage of convenience
▪️second chance
▪️forced proximity
▪️best friend’s brother
▪️enemies to lovers

I will definitely check out the rest of the series, all available now on KU.

Thank you Must Love Audio for the gifted ALC.

What to Expect:
- Marriage of Convenience
- Second Chance Romance
- Lovers to Enemies to Lovers
- Best Friend's Brother
- Forced Proximity
- CEO FMC
- Former Navy Seal MMC
- Difficult Family Dynamics
- Dual POV

Hate the One You’re With is the fourth book in Kendall Hale’s Happily Ever Mishaps series, and it can be read as a standalone.

This story has an interesting take on the marriage-of-convenience and second-chance romance tropes. Emmersyn faces a dilemma at 18: marry or find a way to cover her college tuition until she inherits her trust at 25. She’s ready to handle it on her own, but when her best friend’s family runs into financial trouble, her friend suggests she marry her brother, Caleb, to solve both of their problems. Caleb agrees, knowing his family could really use the help. Feelings start to develop between them, but pressure from family pulls them apart. A few years later, Emmersyn needs Caleb’s help again to keep her family’s company from falling apart, and they find themselves agreeing to live together for six months. Can they work through their resentment, or will the unresolved drama push them even further apart?

Emmersyn and Caleb were incredibly frustrating characters. Hurt people hurt people, and Caleb was definitely the president of the “hurt Emmersyn at all costs” club. I didn’t like him initially, and his character had to grow on me. As he released some anger, he became a sweet and swoony man determined to win his wife’s love back. Emmersyn is hard-working and selfless. She was determined to do what it took to protect her family’s legacy. Getting past their pain and secrets is tough, but they still really care about each other. They had amazing chemistry, and I loved their banter. Their reunion was steamy! Caleb has a mouth on him! Those moments were written well. Although it seemed things progressed almost too quickly, I did enjoy their journey back to each other.

Narration:
Angelina Rocca and Sean Masters brought the characters to life in an amazing dual-style performance. They are the perfect voices for Emmersyn and Caleb. Angelina and Sean's voices complement each other beautifully. I could really feel the tension, chemistry, and vulnerability. Their performances enhanced my experience with the story, making it engaging and memorable.

Thanks to Kendall Hale, Lyric Audiobooks, and Must Love Audio for the ALC. Opinions expressed are my own.

Not sure if my expectations for this book were too high, or if I simply outgrew the storyline of this series. The first two books in Happily Ever Afters, The Ex-cavenger Hunt and Knot Really Engaged, were insanely addictive. I couldn't put them down and ended up devouring both books in one sitting. The world-building, characters, and romance were all so well-done and that was why I kept expecting the rest of the series would be somewhat similar, if not more captivating. However, as the fourth book, Hate The One You're With, turned out to be quite meh for me due to the lack of character development and background story of the main plot. Don't get me wrong, the steamy scenes were all-so-HOT and a lot of fun to read. Sadly, I felt like I still didn't really know much about the protagonists, Caleb and Emmersyn. They did go way back and had some sort of history when she was still a teenager considering that they got in this marriage of convenience thingy. So of course I was ready to see more of their "dark pasts" unveil throughout the story, especially when this book was told in duo POVs. Unfortunately, aside from the sexy flirts and dirty talks between the two--even when they hated each other's guts so much--there honestly wasn't much going on with them. I kept looking forward to some big revelation regarding their early marriage and how it all went down, but all I got in the end was more questions and confusion about the whole story. That being said, if you liked some quick fun read full of sexual tension and super hot scenes, this would definitely be perfect for you, but if you were looking for some soul-deep connection between the main characters, then I was sorry, maybe try the first two instalments in this series instead.

💭I have mixed feelings about this book. The "second chance" trope is tricky, and when it's not done right, it's hard to get into. Add a past-present POV to the mix, and I was completely lost. I finished the book, but I still feel like I don't fully understand what happened. For a story with flashbacks, you'd think it would revisit the important scenes, right? 😮‍💨

Caleb's character drove me nuts. At the beginning, he absolutely HATES Emmerson, like, seriously despises her. He's hell-bent on taking everything from her with no mercy. I was so curious about what she could've possibly done to make him feel that way. And when I found out, it didn't justify his extreme hatred at all, it just made him seem like an ungrateful jerk. Then, all of a sudden, he forgets everything, "forgives" her (not that she needed forgiving), and decides he wants her back. And I'm over here like, "Are you okay, dude?" SMH.

Despite the glaring plot holes, I actually started to like Caleb after he realized his mistakes. So, I began enjoying the story in the second half. It's an interesting premise for a second-chance romance, I just wish it had been pulled off a bit better. That said, I was all about their flirty banter and the chemistry between them. The spicy moments? Absolute perfection!

Sean and Angelina absolutely saved this audiobook for me! Honestly, I don’t think I could have made it through if it weren’t for their incredible performances. Sean is quickly climbing his way into my top three favorite narrators, and that's saying a lot! I'm utterly obsessed with his deep, captivating voice. And Angelina? She can do no wrong in my eyes. I adore her with all my heart.

This was such a fun read! Second chance romances aren’t one of my top tropes, but I loved how Kendall wrote Caleb and Emmerysn’s story. I feel that Kendall did such a good job making me feel such strong emotions throughout the book. I actually ~hated~ Emmerysn’s grandmother! I literally hated the woman from the very first mention of her. I loved how Caleb and Emmerysn realized that they were meant to be and not just married because they made an agreement. I think my favorite moment was Caleb demanding The Bentley and when he finally received it (IYKYK) If you love marriage of convenience, second chance romance, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and brother’s best friend, then you will loooove Hate The One You’re With!

Spicy, Angsty, and Highly Emotional

Emmersyn and Caleb both had to deal with some difficult things and with the tragedies in my personal life I really identifyed with them.

Overall, this story was fun to listen to and had some really tense emotional hits. Emmersyn was dealing with an incredibly complicated grieving process and I felt that in my bones. Pairing it against the angsty hate emanating from Caleb kept everything fun but highly emotional. And when the two finally got together 🔥

✨Note✨ Interconnected standalone, and despite the sweet and innocent cover, this book is filled with smut. I think I’m low key in love with it. 🤣

Caleb, Caleb, Caleb…what a dirty mouth you have!!! And I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT.👏🏻

The banter, the tension, the emotions, they are so well done in this story.

Caleb and Emerson agree on a marriage of convenience, each for different reasons. They are young but build a friendship and eventually fall in love. But a certain someone and circumstances happen that come between them and they separate.

Years later they are forced back together (yep, still very much married to each other) by that same certain someone and let’s just say that love has turned into some hate. Caleb has bitter feelings for Em and Em has closed herself off and buried her true self.

Can these two overcome their past and fall back in love?!?

And dare I say Caleb is now my favorite from the Happily Ever Mishaps?!?🤭

Thank you Kendall for this ARC!!

Let’s get straight to the point—Hate the One You’re With is one of those books that manages to be simultaneously perplexing and frustrating. The "plot," if you can even call it that, is all over the place. The premise seems to center around Em, who, thanks to her manipulative grandmother, is trapped in a forced proximity arrangement with her husband, Caleb, for six months to avoid losing her inheritance. That sounds like it could be interesting... until the details start piling up.

Em must agree to stay with her estranged husband Caleb for six months, or she risks losing her inheritance due to the manipulations of her overbearing grandmother. Em hesitates, understandably, but just when it seems like she's ready to walk away from these ridiculous terms, she discovers a note revealing that if she refuses, all her family’s employees will lose their jobs. The stakes seem high—but that’s about as close as we get to coherent motivation.

Caleb is spiteful and, quite literally, seems to hate her guts. But does that stop her from agreeing to hand over everything she owns to him, including her family company? Nope! Em’s decision-making, if you can call it that, defies all logic. Caleb is clearly the type to stomp on her happiness—and possibly her entire legacy—just to prove a point, yet she trusts him with, well, everything.

If you’re looking for character growth, don’t hold your breath. Em and Caleb’s interactions rarely lead to anything other than sudden sexual escapades. Every conversation, no matter the context, seems to end in sex, which would be fine if there were any emotional build-up or depth. But we get scenes where Em is on the phone with her best friend (Caleb's sister) and just starts fantasizing about Caleb right in the middle of the call. Even business discussions somehow veer into phone sex territory, making it hard to take any part of the story seriously.

What really derails Hate the One You’re With is the lack of any clear motivations or character arcs. You’re left scratching your head over the choices these characters make because they seem to act purely out of convenience to push the “plot” along. Unfortunately, there’s neither plot coherence nor emotional resonance to be found here.

In short, this book is a bewildering mess of clumsy plot points, inexplicable character choices, and random sex scenes. If you enjoy logic, character development, or a consistent storyline, you might want to give this one a hard pass.

Give me all that tension! Hate the One You’re With by Kendall Hale was a steamy, second-chance romance filled with all my favorite enemies-to-lovers vibes that I absolutely devoured in one sitting. Seriously, Emmersyn and Caleb’s angsty, hate-to-love romance had me hooked right from the start, and I couldn’t get enough of their love story. This is book four in Kendall’s Happily Ever Mishaps series but it can be read as a stand alone.

Angelina Rocca and Sean Masters perform this audiobook in dual narration, and woah…did these two embody all things Emmersyn and Caleb. Angelina’s warm, raspy voice conveyed Emmersyn’s career-driven and passionate persona perfectly but also added a vulnerability to her tone to showcase Emmersyn’s softer, tender moments. (Yes, lady!) Sean’s deep, rumbly timbre commanded my attention encompassing Caleb’s broody and dedicated demeanor by righting wrongs from the past and dreaming up a promising future. Plus, both narrators brought the heat with the intense chemistry between Emmersyn and Caleb.

Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of a marriage of convenience romance with a hot grumpy former Navy Seal, a hardworking fierce CEO, friends to enemies to lovers, forced proximity, best friend’s brother, flashback chapters, grandmother issues, saving the business, witty tension-filled banter, cat problems, explosive kisses, prime dirty talk, airplane steam, love declarations, truths about the past, and a HEA that was meant to be, then you will love Emmersyn and Caleb’s story. I always look forward to more from Kendall Hale.

3.5 ✨

A decent read. Loved the banters so much. I love dual timelines books and this one had the same thing but at times I felt some parts were missing. Loved both the characters and I felt Emmersyn's story arc was well structured.

Read it if you love:
✨Forced proximity
✨Banters
✨ Second chance romance
✨ Enemies to lovers

And also no third act break up so I was happy.

Wow, this was so good. Second chance romance where they hate each other on the surface and realize why they tanked their relationship the first time around. The characters are great, the dynamic is interesting, the playfulness is so good, and the spice is definitely there. I loved how they found their way back to each other. Oh and this is also a best friends Brother situation as well.

The title of this book screams angst, and I was here for it!! I love second chance, and the whole premise of this one was so fun. Don’t let this sweet little cover fool you!

Emmersyn and Caleb’s story was so much fun (the Bentley had me cracking up), while containing a lot of heavy topics and struggles as well. I loved how it was told with flashbacks! It was hard to reconcile the Caleb with the past and present for a bit, he seemed like a different person, but it made it so easy to become invested in. I needed the full story of why he despised her so much, and it all made sense once I got to it.

The audiobook is AMAZING - it’s narrated by two of my favorites, Sean Masters and Angelina Rocca. They did an incredible job at portraying the characters. I always love listening to Angelina’s sweet and sultry voice, and Sean has the best deep, growliness that fit so well.

This book is a hate-to-love, marriage of convenience, second chance, forced proximity romance that is part 4 in a series of interconnected standalones.

The story was, unfortunately a miss for me. The premise was great: Emmersyn and Caleb got married when they were barely more than teenagers, in a mutually beneficial arrangement: Em had to marry to access her trust fund, and Caleb’s parents were in a bad way financially and he wanted to save their business and home. That’s the backstory, and now it was years later and they haven’t seen or spoken to each other, and it’s obvious that they’re on bad terms, but we don’t know why… but now Emmersyn’s grandmother is dead and Em thinks that she will finally be able to move on with her life now that the manipulative matriarch is gone… Wrong! In her will, Grandma demanded that, in order to get any of her inheritance, Emmersyn and Caleb had to live together (again) for 6 months. Em was ready to say “no way” and walk away from ever getting a dime, but there was a stipulation that if she refused, her father’s company (that Emmersyn had been running all these years) would be disbanded and all the long term loyal employees would be let go with nothing. So, Emmersyn allowed herself to be emotionally manipulated AGAIN by her dead grandma because she didn’t want to be responsible for all those people losing their jobs. So she calls up Caleb, and though it seems like he hates her more than anything, he agrees to move in with her.

Ok… so, this story still could be great, if the tension is just right, and the truth of what went wrong all those years ago comes to light, and they gradually come around and form a new connection and trust and feelings… but that’s not what happened. They were SO mean and SO nasty to each other for 80% of the book, neither of them showed any redeeming qualities. And the spice felt out of place. They’d seriously be SO mean to each other and then Caleb would say something dirty and then he’d get Emmersyn off with his hands, and as soon as she came down from that high they’d go back to be hateful toward each other. I think it was supposed to show that they just couldn’t resist their chemistry, but it came off as manipulation and nonconsensual - and I read a lot of dark romance, so that can be done right and well in the right circumstances but this wasn’t it. So, lather, rinse, repeat until 80% of the book and then out of nowhere they flipped a switch and it felt like two completely different people were in a relationship together and decided to live happily ever after. It just - didn’t work, didn’t make sense. There wasn’t enough character growth or story advancement for it to make sense. They truly hated each other until they suddenly didn’t anymore.

I still gave it 3 stars because the premise is good, the spice scenes were HOT - even though they felt out of place and out of character - but the audiobook narration was phenomenal! I don’t think I would have finished it had I been reading with my eyeballs, but with Angelina Rocca and Sean Masters voices in my ears I wanted to hear more. Sean Masters is a new narrator, this was the first time I’d heard his voice, and I can’t wait to listen to more books where he’s cast as the MMC! Angelina had the perfectly raspy voice and I love listening to her bring characters to life who’ve lived through some sh!t, who are a bit jaded or existentially worn down. Her voice is soulful and seductive and breathy and just so great!

So, anyway, it’s a bummer that this story fell so flat for me, but maybe that’s on me… this is the first time I’ve read anything by this author. Maybe this is just her way, and maybe if you’re a fan of her other books you’ll totally love it! There are a lot of great reviews, so maybe it was a me thing, and I just expected too much? So, keep that in mind. If you decide to read it, I HIGHLY suggest listening to it, Angelina and Sean made a great team!

Huge thanks to Must Love Audio and Kendall Hale for this ALC, and kudos to Lyric audio for a great casting and production of this audiobook!

I have been in a state of *behind* for several weeks, so here I am writing up my ARC review for this book days after it releases! UGH, I’m so frustrated with time lately LOL!

I’m pretty new to Kendall Hale, this being only my third story by her, so I don’t really have a handle on what kind of storyteller she is, but this story was vastly different in many ways to the two I have read. They were cute and entertaining, and this one just seemed a little unhinged. I’m not using unhinged in a complete negative way, but because I honestly still don’t have a good grasp on their past and why Caleb has such intense negative feelings for Emmerson at the start of the story. And see, there’s a lot of flashbacks to the past, but I’m still over in my corner thinking ”hmmmmmm”, and then his about-turn was so quick that I really was hmmmmmmmming! If that particular characterization was a tiny thing, I wouldn’t have even noticed but it’s not a small thing people. I mean the whole point of this story is a second chance, but a second chance from what exactly I have no clue. I mean I know but his entire character in hate mode was too much for me. That’s just one of quite a few little things here and there that were part of the story that if you put them all together, the word unhinged makes a bit of sense.

I’d be remis if I didn’t say that I’ve never really been too big of a fan of this type of romance story. The kind where the couple has already been established but are trying to come back from chaos. It just takes away from the whole “meet my prince charming” aspect of romance fiction that I love. I know that terminology is antiquated and whatnot, but it’s the best way to describe the reason I dislike this particular theme in a book. It’s not exactly a second chance the way I perceive second chances to be. Again, all of this is judgement. *shrug* Nevertheless, I’m the one reading so my judgement affects how the story hits me…

I don’t want you to think this is a bad story, because it is not, I just think the execution of the story could have been a lot better and characterization needed to make more sense.

Hate The One You're With is a second chance romance with two former spouses that are forced back into eachother's lives. At eighteen, Emerson was forced to marry to pay for her college tuition. Enter Caleb. Her best friend's brother and an ex Navy SEAL. Emerson needed her inheritance and Caleb needed money to pay his dad's hospital bills. They get married, but the marriage doesn't last long. Fast forward ten years later, Emerson's grandmother has passed and her last wish is for Emerson to live with her estranged husband for six months or she loses her company and her employees livelihoods too. Caleb agrees, but she needs to give him everything. Will these two find a way back to eachother again? And is love sweeter the second time around?

This was a super cute story! Kendall is a new to me author. I loved that it was written in past and present timelines. So as the reader we get a glimpse into how Caleb and Emerson got married and the fallout. When they first meet it was a chance encounter. Despite their circumstances of being in a marriage of convenience it was initially a win win situation. I liked all of Caleb and Emerson's moments. I felt the attraction between them. Caleb in the present timeline was keeping a secret from Emerson to protect her. I wasn't surprised about the secret, but felt so bad for them.

As for the audiobook narration, it was great! Performed in dual narration by Sean Masters and Angelina Rocca. They brought these characters to life. The audiobook was a quick listen for me. Sean conveyed Caleb's undeniable love for Emerson through his gruff tone. He had a deep, gravelly voice that captured Caleb's grumpiness too. Angelina conveyed Emerson with uneasiness in her tone that showed how Emerson didn't want to deal with her former spouse. I loved how Angelina showed Emerson's determination in keeping her company and protecting her employees. Both Sean and Angelina were amazing!

✨ Hate the One You're With ✨

Can an audio book be super angsty while also being hilarious, sweet, and spicy!? Why yes...yes it can! This was such a fun and different take on a Marriage of Convenience. I haven't read anything exactly like it before which was so refreshing. Caleb and Em seriously hate each other at the beginning! Think Sweet Home Alabama vibes. They end up being forced to live in the same apartment for 6 months and their hate seriously comes out. The shenanigans and jabs back and forth were both hilarious and hot AF! That tension! (Can we talk about the cat in this book!? I died laughing. IYKYK) I wish there had been a bit more details around what broke them up and some more conversations around their resolution and the transition from hate to love. These two go from hate to lust to love QUICK. If you want a dirty talking alpha male, lots of mutual pining, some miscommunication, and a super sweet ending, you'll really enjoy this book!

Okay this was a true enemies to lovers and I am here for it! The story starts off with Em being put in a very difficult position by her now deceased grandma. The hatred between Em and Caleb is palpable and we all know 𝓼𝓸𝓶𝓮𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰 went down in the past with these two, but we're not sure what.

I love how they had a chance meet cute and the feelings kind of developed organically from the beginning. The story goes back and forth a little bit to show exactly what happened and how it happened. Now, years later they're both determined to make the other pay, but are still 🆅🅴🆁🆈 attracted to each other.

The no third-act breakup normally bugs me (I spend the whole book waiting for the other shoe to drop), but in this case it kinda worked since the whole book was kind of a third act breakup.

The mouth on Caleb also...lord have mercy 🥵 The transformation of Caleb going from vengeful, grumpy ex-husband to determined cinnamon roll was so nice to see.

This is the fourth book in this impressive series, and this is Caleb and Emmersyn’s story.
Emmersyn needed her inheritance money to pay her college tuition, and Caleb, who is her best friend’s brother, needed money to pay his dad’s medical bills, and they entered into a marriage of convenience. No Emmersyn’s grandma is still manipulating her from above, as her last wish is that she and Caleb stay together for 6-months or she will lose her inheritance, as her company and employees’ livelihood is at stake. Emmersyn and Caleb has avoided each other at all costs, but now they must stay together, how will they survive?
This is a well written story which has family, friendships, emotions, drama, manipulation, heartbreak, tension, marriage of convenience, forced proximity, enemies / lovers, second chances, humor, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and compelling page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

I’ve really enjoyed this series and how different each story has been. Marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes so I loved Caleb and Emmersyn’s story.

Several years ago, Caleb and Em agreed to get married as a way to help each other out. Outside forces tried and ultimately succeeded in pushing them apart just as they both fell for each other.

In the present, Em’s grandmother has passed away but not before trying one last time to control her granddaughter’s life. Em finds herself needing Caleb as her husband again. Neither of them trust each other so could this possibly work?

Understandably, there was a lot of hurt between them. I loved how they were able to rediscover each other again. Caleb was so swoony and was very determined to win his wife back. I totally understood Emmersyn’s need to close herself off from relationships. It was great seeing other characters from the previous books too! Overall, I adored this book and cannot wait to see what’s next!

Emersyn and Caleb have not had an easy marriage, but their love for each other remains, even if hidden. Just when Em believes that she can now do what she truly wants her grandmother's will gives her another surprise. I loved the banter between our two main characters and the insight we got into the beginning of their relationship through the flashbacks. This story had the right amount of tension and the spice was great. I also received an ALC, and the narrator's did a fantastic job bringing the main characters to life. It was a delightful read, and listening to some of the scenes made me giggle. I'm glad that Em was able to form her own family and finally lead the life she wanted, surrounded by people who loved her.

Second chance romances always win in my heart. This audiobook was so well done! I really enjoyed the push and pull and tension between Emmeryson and Caleb. The dual audio narration performance by Sean Masters and Angelina Rocca was absolute perfection! They brought the story and characters feelings to life.
This is book four in the Happily Ever Mishaps series but my first and I did not feel lost with the characters. I am for sure going to read the previous ones as I just really enjoyed this story.

I’m all about romance with some spice, but this one seemed a little too much spice for my preference. It felt like spice over plot. I’ve loved Kendall Hale’s previous books, but this one just felt a lot spicier. And not in terms of like how detailed it got, it was just happening way more often than I thought necessary.

2.5 rounded up

The Betley! Ah! A sure fire way to get someone to agree to something! The banter was on point and the spice! Yes! This author amps it up to full defcon 1 when it comes to sexy times. I really enjoyed this second chance romance. It had everything you could want with an almost enemies to lovers, forced proximity romance. This pair took bantering to a whole new level. It was super enjoyable and is a nice addition to this series.

At 18 years old, Emmersyn was the heiress of Langley Media and the only family left in her life was her grandmother. Emmersyn's grandmother manipulated her in believing that they don’t have enough money for her college after her grandfather passed away and if she wanted to go to college she can do so by accessing her trust funds. The only stipulation to access her trust funds was she has to be either 25 years old or married. Emmersyn considered working till she can gather enough money to go to college rather than access her trust funds, but when her best friend’s family were in financial problem, she decides to kill 2 birds with same stone. Her best friend convinces her to marry her brother, this way she doesn’t have to marry someone rich snob her grandmother chooses.

At 19 years old Caleb was enrolled in Navy SEAL. His family was in financial trouble as both his parents had lost their jobs and his father had suffered from heart attack. With so many medical bills and no income, Caleb was desperate to help his family and so when Emmersyn suggested they should get married and then after marriage she can help him financially, he took her up on her offer. After they got married, they fell in love with each other and were looking forward to a future together, but Emmersyn’s grandmother was hell bent on separating them as Caleb was not from same financial status as them. Emmersyn’s grandmother successfully separates them and making them believe that the relationship ended because of the other. This leads to both Emmerysn and Caleb resenting and hating each other.

Fast forward now, Emmerysn is again in a tough situation because of her grandmother’s will. According to the will if Emmerysn wants to keep the company she worked so hard for, she has to live with her husband, Caleb under the same roof for 6 moths, if not then she will lose everything. When she approaches Caleb to convince him to live with her, he doesn’t agree at first but later agrees to help her only if she hands over everything she owns to him.

This starts a tug of war between the two and they use everything in their arsenal against each. They taunt, tease, rile up and goad each other using the physical attraction they have for each other. While they play their little game, Caleb sees glimpses of the sweet and warm hearted girl he fell in love with and releases he still loves her. After this revelation, he does everything in his power to convince Emmerysn to give him and their marriage another chance. After knowing the truth about her grandmother’s schemes to separate them and a lot of groveling from Caleb, Emmerysn finally confesses that she is also in love with him and gives their marriage another chance.

If I am being honest, I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I thought I would upon reading the tropes and blurb. Concept of the story is good but story telling is repetitive and tends to get boring after a point. Author has described the same thing multiple times in different ways which I was not a fan of. For me the story didn’t click.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬/𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The narrators, Sean Masters and Angelina Rocca, did a great job brining the characters to life. Their voices were perfect for Emerson and Caleb. Second chance romance, marriage of convenience....sign me up! I was so excited to read Hate the One You're With and I am so happy I did. It was a really good read.

In Hate the One You're With, we meet Caleb and Emerson. At age 18, Emerson is given a choice, find someone to marry or get no money for college. What starts as a marriage of convenience leads to friendship and love, and so much more. When it came to outside forces though, love would not be enough. After first forcing Emerson and Caleb in to a marriage of convenience, Emerson's grandmother becomes determined to tear the two apart and at the end...grandma wins.

Over 10 years later, grandma is no longer alive, but she is still very much meddling in Caleb and Emerson's relationship. Now, in order for Emerson to get her inheritance and keep the business she has grown to love and cherish, she must live with her still husband (on paper at least), for 6 months. Will grandma's new demands finally bring Emerson and Caleb back together for good or will her posthumous meddling lead to a permanent separation?

I had a good time reading this one. This was such a cute romantic story with lots of funny banter and spicy tension. I laughed, I swooned, I clutched my invisible pearls...I experienced it all! Sometimes in life we meet someone who is made especially for us, and Caleb and Emerson were made for each other. When forced to live with each other years after their separation, Emerson and Caleb learn that things are not always what they seem and that time and space does not always squelch the flame of love and friendship. Emerson was a strong, caring, and relatable character and Caleb just made me swoon! I really liked how the story was told. Through flashbacks, we were able to see how the couple met, how they fell in love, and what led to their original separation. This helps gives us a better understanding of the characters and their motivations. Finally, I really really liked that there was no 3rd act breakup. I don't particularly have an issue with a 3rd act breakup but sometimes, it just doesn't make sense and I am happy that the author did not force one in this story.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and I recommend Hate the One You're With.

What to Expect:

Oh Caleb, you dirty talker, you! This is, hands down, my favourite in the series so far. I know there is just one more left (Jacob's story), but I feel confident in my opinion.
This is Caleb and Emmersyn's story. And it is H-O-T HOT!
I could not put this down, it's so great! i'm talking, little leg kicks in the air, squealing like a little girl, fanning my face great!
If you're looking for
-enemies to lovers
-steamy
-forced proximity
-second-chance romance
-witty banter
then look no further. Caleb and Emmersyn were just 18/19 years old when they were married: Emmersyn was locked in a situation that, in order for her to have access to her trust fund so that she can afford to got o school, she had to get married.
Caleb is also in a bad situation: his parents are in significant financial stress: his father's hospital bills are piling up with no relief in sight.

If they get married, it's a win-win: if Caleb marries Emmersyn, she can help by paying the medical bills. Unfortunately, Emmersyn has a very meddling and powerful grandmother who does not approve of the marriage.

They separate about a year or two into their relationship. The book is in the present, about 10 years later and they find themselves in another predicament. the author does offer chapters that bring us to the past, and it's done so seamlessly. I loved that we can see how they matured as they got older, and maybe even a bit wiser. However, there is a lot of hurt between them and unresolved feelings, but one thing that is for sure, is their flaming hot chemistry between them. They can't seem to be able to keep their hands (or mouths) off of each other. Caleb has not been able to settle down with anyone else, because he's always been in love with Emmersyn. And she has not been with anyone else since him, because she too has always just been so in love with him, no one else could compare. They just need to stop being so stubborn and let things happen!

Caleb wants to be able to trust Emmersyn again with his heart, but he sees her as cold, selfish, manipulative, calculating and harbouring secrets.

Emmersyn is scared, unsure, and is in fact holding on to truths that, if Caleb knew the truth about things, he would see that she is none of the things he believes to be true about her.

Caleb is smart, strong, broody, swoony and such a dirty talker!
Emmersyn is strong, independent, driven and witty, but when it comes to Caleb, she submits to him with ease.

Their banter is hilarious. i absolutely loved their story and i'm so happy there wasn't a third act break-up.
