More Than a Feeling

He chose the wrong sister. And now, the right one doesn't want him anymore.

I never expected to fall for Fleur. She’s sunshine and joy, where my world was previously gray. What I don’t understand is how her family means so little to her. They warned me she was immature and selfish; and that we’ll never work out.

They were right. She's jealous of my friendship with her sister, my brother's widow.

But being there for Sabine is a promise I won’t break. When Sabine suggests that we take care of each other; I feel like I owe it to her and my brother. So, I let Fleur go. I believed it was the right thing to do. I just never expected to find out that my feelings for Fleur ran deep, that I was, in fact, in love with her.

Even though it’s a Novella there should have been a lot more grovelling than the pittance and lip service Callum gave Fleur.

Callum is so wishy-washy. Not at all the Hero that Fleur deserved. He allowed things to happen to him. Sabine (sister) wanted to date him, so they did. Fleurs parents wanted him with Sabine, so he was. It’s like he justifies his terrible actions because he didn’t actually make any of the decisions. For someone who’s supposed to be powerful and rich, he’s a dumb puppet.

I know the author says no cheating but he spent time with another woman, gave her all his attention and treated Fleur like shit. That’s emotional cheating and if the OW hadn’t been his brother’s widow, he would have absolutely slept with her.

Callum didn’t come to the conclusion that OW was bad all on his own. He only gave up on OW when she showed her true colours. If she hadn’t, he’d probably be married to her since he just allows things to happen to him and he goes along with it. The man is a fucking coward.

I did not believe he loved Fleur. I didn’t even believe in their HFN. I wanted Callum to die in a ditch and for Fleur to find love with one of the soldiers that she’s on a mission with.

Me reading another one of these books 🤡

I guess I didn’t learn my lesson. I totally understand the appeal of the premise - an asshole hero who learns his wrongs and has to grovel.

But the issue is that the hero is always completely unredeemable and in this case, doesn’t grovel in the slightest!

Run away heroines!

**spoilers from now on**

This encapsulates the book (Sabine is the heroine’s sister, this is the hero’s thoughts):
“Sabine didn’t have to feel envious of anyone - especially her sister, who couldn’t match Sabine in looks or brains, no matter how much money she was making.”

And then one second later:
“Between you and Fleur, I’ll always pick her.”

What?! Never ever date a man who thinks these things about you ever, is wishy washy, is cruel, picks everyone over you, who still blames you partially when he learns the truth, lets your sister basically talk him into dating her, and is an utter piece of trash!

At this point I think the author makes it that way so they get attention and people rage read them.😂

had high hopes

The book was bad. Same old story. I expected owd but this time it was really bad. Fmc can’t even think about touching another man but mmc fools around with her sister (they don’t have sx but they kiss and they can’t go at it bc he only thinks about fmc) And the fmc forgave him so damn fast that it was embarrassing. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LETS STOP THINKING WOMEN CANT DESIRE OTHER MEN. This author has potential, if she starts writing about omd and making the men Grovel the books will be better. Would love to see a book written by this author where the man is the one who can’t even think about another woman but the fmc actually sleeps or at least fools around and enjoy another man.

Don't understand what this author has against writing actual believable grovel because lol where was the grovel in this book after what an d-bag he was to her. She almost died and he got off scott free! No effort at all! I'm convinced this author actually despises women and doesn't know how to write a strong male lead. Like I get male mcs who are assh0les but their actions have reasons ect but every single betrayel in her books, the men just waffle and get off Scott free. It's laughable. She should have told him to bore off and drive off her cliff with her sister. He was supposed to be madly in love with her?? Lol WHERE? Like women please stand up. Why are you wasting yourself on losers? Also begging your readers to give you 5 stars so your rating goes up is such an weird thing to do.

Fleur is devastated when she overhears Callum telling her bitchy sister Sabine that their new living arrangement is temporary (news to her) and downplaying their 8-month relationship to basically a fling. And I was GOBBLING it up!

And I enjoyed it, but it reminded me a lot of No Ordinary Love, so I had the same grumps…

➖ The breakup happens before we’re really invested in the couple.
➖ The H (Callum) is a passive beta being railroaded by the OW and family members.
➖ The conflict is great, but the resolution was rushed leaving the “villains” with zero consequences, and the reconciliation was triggered by an event not development. It was also sort of skipped over.

Bottom Line- It was alright, the ingredients are there for awesomeness, but she just doesn’t flesh it out enough for me. This could EASILY be a 4/5 ⭐ read if we had Fleur actually laying it all out with Callum, not just a quick, you hurt my feelings—I’m sorry.

Because, that’s boring… and after doubting her character and entertaining the idea of testing the waters with another woman for most of the book, I wanted more than

I also needed some type of confrontation/fallout (DRAMA) for Sabine and her parents rather than her always being the bigger person because allowing people to crap all over you doesn’t make you amazing with a huge heart, it makes you a doormat.

This is the toxic love story of Callum and Fleur.

Basically it's a love triangle, with Callum and Fleur actually in a relationship, while her sister Sabine pursues him and tries to break them up. Sabine is Fleur's sister and the widow of Callum's brother Seamus.

Fleur overhears a conversation of Callum telling Sabine his relationship with Fleur is temporary and "just sex." Is this just to placate the crying, manipulative Sabine? Or does he really believe it? Is it true, or is he in denial about his feelings?

Fleur dumps him, and he does start spending time with Sabine, to see if the grass is greener. But he can never really get past seeing Sabine as his SISTER-in-law. But he does try to go out with her and they even end up in the bedroom trying to get aroused. So, he's not totally innocent IMO.

ETA: He goes to her house intending to have sex with Sabine. Sabine ends up in her underwear on the bed, Callum never takes his clothes off before he changes his mind and leaves her house.

Then Fleur gets injured and takes him back because life is short. I mean, that's literally it. He said he was sorry, but there was no need to grovel or prove himself because of Fleur's near death experience. She even takes back her narcissistic parents, who treat Sabine like the golden child, saying, "No matter how they treat me, they are my parents." So basically, she's a doormat and likes to be stepped on, hard.

You can read this book separately, but on Audible it is included as a bonus with the book "The Sweetest Taboo." The narration is good, IMO.

I would say I have no words, but I do. I'll keep them to myself except to say another hero lucky to be born with a silver spoon in his mouth as another hero that is dumber than dirt.

Unlike most Alden heroines, this one has tossed her doormat away and tells off her parents as well as the hero. I don't think there's much of a grovel as a sad face.

Ending was way too abrupt, and please, Ms. Alden, can you please, please toss in some comeuppance to the evildoers? It doesn't even have to be epic comeuppance.

It had the angst, the gut punch, the redemption ok and the grovel? Not really there. Though the hero understood what he have done through the heroine's deception, it wasn't an excuse to treat her like that. 4 stars only because I wanted for him to grovel more.

It’s a Festivus miracle! A Maya Alden book where the h is both long-suffering and not a doormat. In fact, she’s nearly perfect — enjoys living in New Orleans, loves sex, has a zest for life, a badass job, etc. if we didn’t have access to her inner thoughts, I would accuse her of being a Cool Girl. She has real friends, not like the friends in some of these other Maya Alden books where they keep their distance when they see the h is suffering (one of my problems with the Savannah series is that in many cases her friends/coworkers comment on how sad the h seems, but they never perform a full intervention the way real friends would, and they all tolerate the H, who has behaved despicably towards their so-called friend, even facilitating their reconciliation).

In this book, when the H behaves callously, she dumps him. When her family finally pushes her over the limit, she dumps them and consistently tells them that she wants nothing to do with them because they’re awful people, as is her sister, a stereotypical piece of work.

This book is very short, and the last 25% of it is promotion for other books. However, I’m so happy that the relentless parade of tragic doormats has been stopped, even if it’s only for this season.

3 1/2 stars.

I enjoyed every second of this story, but I'm extremely sad it was such a short story. I live for Alden's latest releases, and I was so bummed this was just a tiny novella. This story still had the magical gutting angst that MA is famous for, but I missed having an all day read with this story. That being said, I did enjoy all of the angsty feels.

When should one break a promise? Or how far should you go to keep a promise?

Most quotes will tell you that a broken promise will fracture, scar, or even cause a relationship to crumble. However, in the case of More than a Feeling, keeping promises of a dead man actually was the cause of distrust, heartbreak, and a crumbling relationship. Fleur and Callum the heroine and hero of the story were both keeping a promise for Callum’s dead brother Seamus. The promise was like a stick of dynamite. It has the potential to do great harm but as long as it is handled appropriately there should be no concerns. Unfortunately, the way Callum handled the promise to his brother was acting like a lit match to the dynamite.

On Seamus’s wedding day to Sabine, the heroine’s favored sister, he asked the hero to take care of his wife if something should happen to him. Unfortunately, for Seamus he died a year into the marriage in a tragic car accident. So, Callum stepped up to be her support. Sabine played the grieving widow
While making a play for her dead husband’s brother, the hero!

It is also during this time he became closer with the heroine, and they started dating. After 8 months together, he asked Fleur to move in with him.

SPOILER ALERT(This part has spoilers, but it literally happens in the first couple of pages of the first chapter.)🛑 Mild spoilers…

The story starts within a few days of the heroine moving in with the hero. The hero takes the h out for her 26th birthday, but while they are out Sabine calls frantic and sad(her husband has been dead 2 years at this point) He leaves the birthday dinner to go to the sister. The h shows up at the house because the H forgot his wallet in his rush and she overhears him tell the sister that it is just sex with the h Then he tells her that the h living with him is temporary. (Yet, he is the one who insisted the h move in with him) Then, she walks in the room to hand him his wallet while he is sitting on the sister’s bed kissing her hair and stroking her back. He looks at the h regretfully, but doesn’t stop.

Thank you MA for this next part….the h leaves, calls up her friends and immediately starts moving her things out(she kept her place). Most of her things were still packed. The H comes upon her and her friends packing up and actually has the gall to start berating her and trying to shift the blame onto her. He takes no responsibility for what he said or did. And that was the end of chapter 1! Phew ! That was a lot of action.

I don’t want to spoil too much, so the rest of my review will be rather vague.

The H grapples with what is the truth and what is fiction. Even thinking at one point that maybe he should try and make it work with the OW.
This hero has some major groveling to do.There are also a few unexpected surprises(no secret babies) in the story.

MA gives us another heroine who has parents that play favorites among their daughters. If you haven’t guessed, the heroine is not it. Sabine has also had lots of time to lie about the h to the hero.

Now, he was with the heroine romantically for 8 months so he should have realized that things didn’t add up. However, the heroine had to keep certain things about her work life secret from the H, including how smart she is and how she earns a very good living. She also was keeping a secret for the dead brother that would have probably changed the way the H handled the sister. So, in his defense and that is the only one he is getting from me, he probably could feel that she was holding back on some things.

There is no cheating. The H has never slept with the sister. The h also stays very strong in this story, so since she has an unsupportive and vindictive family, she decides to write them off. The H’s good parents are still alive so eventually they become her family unit. His parents were not Sabine fans.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. The H wasn’t my favorite of Maya’s H’s, because he was so obtuse about certain things. As far as his promise to his dead brother goes….he went to extreme lengths. I’m sure his brother would have smacked him upside the head. His lying to protect the ow’s feelings in chapter 1 was hard for me to take. He had no reason to comfort her that way by saying the h was temporary and just for sex. Kissing her hair??? Please….

The heroine’s promise to the brother is a little trickier. First of all it was a different kind of promise that didn’t get a chance to be revealed due to the brother’s death. Had she revealed what she had known after the brother died her family would have found a way to make her look like the bad person. Plus, the H upon learning what the revelation was, probably would have broken his own promise and left her family which means that the H and h wouldn’t have gotten together (they didn’t become a couple until over a year after the brother’s passing. ) Therefore, the promises which were the root for so many issues, were also the reason we got this story to enjoy.

I received this story for free a few months ago from the author. It will be released in December. Her writing reminds me of heroes written in the past. They are usually jerks, make some really stupid choices, but once they realize they love the heroine, they will be her biggest supporter and protector.

I waited for this one so bad!
And it has turned out to be a disappointment!!
Must be my lowest rated MA book. (Or was that 'Bad Boss'?)

*It feels hurried - okay , so it's a novella but still one can do wonders even with short stories.
* I felt so disconnected from both the mcs.
The fmc, for one, is not a doormat but still, she did not really seem to be in love with him. And her character did not resonate with me - neither did her 'pain' - because perhaps there was none?
And that covert spy mission was seriously ott!
The mmc is such such a dithering, confused and unreliable idiot.
So yes okay, he feels some loyalty for his brother's widow but her repetitive insistence on him giving her his time and support over his gf (the fmc) - shouldn't that have raised soem red flags for the guy? And he does tell her to 'soothe' her that the fmc doesn't matter to him and that's it's only sex! But if you are not romantically involved with the widow, why do you even need to justify yourself, fgs??
He is so stuuuupid!
*The whole conflict/drama is a stretch. As always the fmc has evil-sish parents who prioritize the sister over her. Poor her! *eyeroll* The sister's husband is dead and now she wants his brother. Lot of reasons - but mainly because he's with the fmc.
The story opens when already things have been in motion for months, years. The families know each other but again as with other mmcs, this one has not worked out the truth about the fmc's family and blames her for the distance. So, nothing new here.
*The grovel is wimpy and low energy. Both the mcs seems disinterested in the romance, grovel or being together. So, no great-love feel here.
*And suddenly - it's over!
*Zero angst - isn't that the whole idea of reading a Alden book?

--Even the ow is a bore!

It’s a short story. The book ends at the 74%. The rest of the book is excerpts from a couple of other books by this author.

Anywho, it was definitely a lot more likable than any of the previous books by this author I’ve read. I got a decent enough betrayal at the very beginning of the book. The MMC is as usual an ahole who I would personally never want back. But the storyline allows you to accept him back due to life threatening situations that bring the clarity of delusional love up front and center lol.

Anyway, it ends abruptly and you have to hunt down a bonus character for a somewhat HEA which I haven’t done yet. I’ll add my thoughts on that later when I do.

PS

I sent for the bonus chapter link at like 6am this morning. It is now 11am and still no email with bonus chapter. This is why I absolutely ABHOR when authors hold an “epilogue” (for lack of a better word for bonus chapter) hostage just to get subscribers and hits on their page. I don’t have time to WASTE chasing all over the internet looking for something that should be included in a product I ACTUALLY PAID FOR! I don’t do KU! I bought the book! This hassle is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. I already gave money by purchasing this item. Anything else is a scam or hustle and I’m not interested.

This author is a PHENOMENAL writer for betrayal books but by the end I always end up hating them because of the MMC’s and I have no intention of ever reading them again. To now contribute to my frustration levels with this shady tactic of making her readers track down an “extra” chapter is a racket. And it will drive people away in the long run. I have stopped reading and supporting many authors who did this (Grace Goodwin, Alexa Riley, to name a few). As this author is already on shaky ground with me because I only like the betrayal’s in the books and not the whole story, it’s only a matter of time before I walk away.

Good luck.

My rating: 4 Stars

What I loved: I liked how Fleur(h) stood up to her parents and to Callum(H). I also liked how she didn’t need anyone to support her.

What I didn’t like: I honestly wanted her parents to see the error of their ways and for the sister to be disowned. I also wished that Fleur would have made Callum grovel more.

***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: Overheard trope (the H talking about the h to ow), OW drama (h’s sister). H and h have been sleeping together for 8 months when she overhears him tell her sister that him and the h are temporary, that he has had sex with plenty of women. h’s sister was married to the H’s brother. H’s brother passed away in a car accident and once the sister saw that the H and h was together decided she wanted him. The sister will call and the H would go running. H promised his brother he would take care of her if anything should happen to him. h after hearing him, tells the H that they are done. H being pressured by the h’s parents to date the sister, tells them he will think about it. The sister tells everyone that her and the H are dating and the H doesn’t correct her. When they run into the h, the sister is all over the H, she even kisses the H. Later, the H tells the sister he isn’t feeling it and realizes he is in love with the h. The sister gets nasty and tells him all of the h’s boyfriends like her more and she is better in bed than the h. H realizes that the sister is the jealous one and that the h is not what her family said she is. H goes to apologize and to tell the h he loves her. When they run into a guy the sister knows, the H finds out that the sister was cheating on his brother and that she lied about the miscarriage but instead got an abortion. h leaves for her job assignment and gets hurt. H tells the sister and her parents that he knows about her cheating on his brother and the abortion. H is told that the h got hurt on the job. h comes back home with the H nursing her back to health. HEA with the H and h together and the h’s parents still believing the sister’s lies.

Final thoughts: This was a quick read. Definitely will check out more from this author when I’m in the mood for some ow drama.

I love Maya Alden I truly do. Her writing is amazing great author. Her betrayals are heartbreaking and give me the gut punch that I need. BUT the grovel never ever sizes up to the betrayal the hero’s are let off so easily there’s never a chase, we could have half a book full of betrayal and the heroine still folds in 2 chapters. There’s always something that makes it so much easier for the hero to get the girl back and that’s where it falls flat.

Once her grovelling part is way more lengthy than what it is right now, heroines don’t want anything to do with the man and hero’s are on their knees begging for forgiveness her books will be a five star for me she’s already got the writing skills, already has the betrayal part down to a T but we’re just missing the icing on the cake.

Nope. This wasn't it. Again I just can't seem to get into this author's stories. It's definitely a me thing so don't let that sway you. Very short novella. Only 128 pages long with her newest book added at the end. I forget what it's called. 🤔 Anyways, this ended up being boring of all thing's even though the h was a secret coder for a private contractor working for the US government. I rolled my eyes so damn hard. It was more than ridiculous. No way this would have happened. Yes, I know it's fiction. This book ended up having a feminist flare with some patriotic thrown in. 😂 Overall it was just ok.

Second Chance Novella - betrayal-redemption-grovel kind of storyline. Other woman drama. Honestly I wanted a little drama and a book to hurt my feelings a little. This one I didn’t connect with as much, because honestly, not enough grovel. FMC would have been better off without MMC - him and her family didn’t deserve her. Even though he did have some redemption, it was just rushed for me.

Callum spends all his time being there for his late brother's widow, Sabine, and takes his girlfriend Fleur for granted. He uses a promise he made to his brother to justufy his behavour but lets not sugar coat this he was a jerk. Fluer also happens to be Sabines sister and she has a complicated relationship with her family.
Fleur hears Callum dismissing her and their relationship and packs her stuff and leaves, I did a happy dance when that happened. It doesnt take Callum long to realise he is wrong about so many things and that includes Fleur.
This is a novella and it is fast paced with a HEA.
Well worth reading.

This one frustrated me no end. Instead of a strong heroine and a good grovel that was SO needed, I got a doormat heroine and a zero that wouldn't know what a grovel was if it jumped up and bit him on the bum. Not only that but I don't believe in their HFN, nor do I believe he truly loves her. Sigh 🤷‍♀️

If you’ve read Maya Alden before, you know the drill—short, dramatic, and a bit over the top. More Than a Feeling is no different. Callum and Fleur are dating, but there’s tension because Callum is super supportive of his sister-in-law, Sabine (a widow after Callum’s brother died). This eventually leads to a breakup when Callum says some pretty harsh things to Fleur.

The story is okay, but it feels like it’s missing something. There’s not much angst, no real groveling, and the resolution is pretty quick. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. If you’re expecting deep emotions or a lot of character growth, this probably isn’t it.

That said, if you’re into quick reads with messy drama, it’s worth a shot. Just don’t expect too much.

Had potential
It was too short
The H was oblivious
Emotional cheating
H just let things happen even though he knew it wasn't right to do so
He tried to forget her but he couldn't do it (physically 🤢)
She forgave him too easy
Not enough groveling

This had potential to be really good, but it felt a little short. I am a total sucker for the angst and a story about a girl, Fleur, who has been dating a guy for 8 months, only to hear him tell her sister that 1) he is only having sex with Fleur, 2) it doesn't mean anything 3) and even though he's asked her to move in, that's just temporary, 4) and he does this after leaving her in the middle of a date 5) on her birthday and 6) she catches him at said sister's house which is actually Fleur's house that sister has just sort of steamrolled her way into taking over -- well, that's gonna be a lot of angst.

And yeah, I guess kind of? But after she moves out they have exactly two confrontations where Ryan acts like a perfect asshat. The first, where he sees her dad appear to hit her, and the second, where her sister sits on his lap and they canoodle in front of her. Then, all the sudden, he notices that her sister is cray-cray and, yeah, so are the girls' parents, and wants back with Fleur. It all felt really flat. The author does convey that Ryan felt like he was forcing himself to be with Sabine and missed Fleur, but he is so caught up in how beautiful Sabine is and how perfect they'd be together and how irresponsible the woman he just spent eight months with is because she doesn't get along with her family that it felt like emotional whiplash when he finally has the turnaround.

The story was made more interesting by Fleur's super-secret job (not spoiler tagging that because we find out about it early on) as a government subcontractor. She even has a code-name! And that job had the potential for this author to do something new and different, only it kind of fizzled. As it was, they spent most of the book apart and it seemed if it weren't for her sister being absolutely batshit, maybe she'd been an okay person, just maybe not for him, would he have ever realized that Fleur wasn't so bad? I mean I understand a big part of his bad opinion of her was because the sister and parents were terrible, but if they hadn't been but he'd still had those opinions, after eight months together, to the point where he asked her to move in with him, shouldn't he have figured that out?

Honestly, this one was kind of a dud in the end, which was a shame, because another couple of chapters would have really helped flesh everything out.

This was going okay until FMC got injured. Suddenly she goes from being angry at the MMC to I've always loved him and forgive him for being a royal ahole. I got whiplash from how fast this transformation happens. I had to flip back to see if I missed some chapters since she seemed to have completely forgiven everything he did and was wanting to sleep with him immediately. Very little remorse from the MMC. There is always so much potential in this author's books if only she would show true grovel and redemption.
