Set in a Scandinavian-inspired medieval world, Kinwolf is about the quest of teenage Kris - he was adopted as a pup but has always felt he didn't belong despite growing up in a loving family. There's a reason for that feeling, which together with a feud from before he was born, which claimed his parents' lives, pushes him to explore the dangerous North. He loses a friend and gains new ones as the journey progresses to the point when he inevitably needs to grapple with a question of identity. Am I someone I was taught to hate? Am I the one meant to resolve that old feud? Can I, a merchant, stand up to a lord and his evil Guard Captain? Are greed and power the only things driving the world?
I rooted for Kris from the start of his quest, which had a fair share of physical danger. He was alone against nature, against fierce enemies, and even against his own body. He's a relatable and somewhat vulnerable protagonist and watching him find his inner strength and accepting himself is the most fascinating aspect of the story.
While the focus is definitely on Kris's identity discovery and his justice-serving journey, the romantic subplot gives the story a tender core. I liked how an accidental partner turned love interest helps Kris through his quest (which is partly hers too). They don't agree on everything but learn to appreciate each other.
The medieval world-building is impeccable - wolves and dogs inhabiting it, their various customs and lifestyles, their lore. Action scenes - fights and escapes - shine too.
The writing is crisp and immersive. Landscape descriptions make you feel you're there with the protagonists.
So if you're a fan of medieval quests peppered with action but although thoughtful and well-written, this book is the one to add to your list.
