Canmore, Alberta is like a castle under those on the outside want in, those on the inside just want to live in peace with the space they’ve got. But the best way into a castle is to undermine the a once sleepy mountain town is about to find threats all around.
Author of "Hooker & Brown" and many other mountain-oriented fictions. Jerry is a mountain fiction writer, published often in "The Alpinist" and the "Canadian Alpine Journal". He works several years as trail crew in Kananakis and writes about our perceptions of ourselves in the mirror that are the mountain west.
A love letter to the Town of Canmore, and a must read for anyone interested in its past, present or future. Jerry manages to create compassionate perspective through 8 contradicting characters, with both humour and charm. There’s something for everyone in this one… even the city folks!
I read this book while staying in Canmore for a few weeks and it was great for getting a feeling for the town and its history. Like the byline says, it’s an absurd book and often the plot is hard to follow, but the writing is good and it keeps you entertained. Plus, you can’t beat the feeling of reading a book that’s set where you are.
A fun book for anyone, I laughed out loud many times. Such great characters. "T'anna felt like a nose getting lectured by a fart", (after cat-calls from a construction crew) I applaud the license Auld took to bring Canmore's history together in a way we can only imagine to confront the issues facing the community today.
