A standalone story set in the world of Nihilian Effect.
"In an era where magic has been reduced to common apps in cybernetic implants, a prank gone wrong throws James Castor into the past with an ancient magitech glove. Even with all of its power, he is unable to return to his own time and is soon caught up in the problems of the past. He travels the world to find a way home while keeping one step ahead of the men trying to collect the bounty on his head."
This is a story of magic and time travel, from an era of advancement and technology to a dark age of monsters and gods. James Castor seems to find trouble around every corner as he travels across the world in search of someone who might have a clue as to how he might get back to his own time. For some reason unknown to him, the goddess's bounty hunters are hot on his trail. He witnesses continual oppression along the way, and begins to wonder if he can make a difference in peoples' lives, but that might mean he will never get home.
While most books in the Nihilian Effect Lore series were written to be read standalone, this book is less so, containing details that pertain to Naming the Bane and Branding of a Heretic.

The writing was fine and I'm sure I'd have enjoyed this more had I known anything about this series. It may have been a standalone but I had no idea what the setting was, and I was more confused about what was going on than anything.
So I may have missed a lot because somehow I read this and never read the first 2 books. Seemed fun, had some good moments, but it kind of just ended on a cliffhanger. If that's how this series is, then it's my mistake for getting the buying into the middle of the series.
