HALLMARK STYLE ROCKSTAR ROMANCE WITH SIZZLE!

In this second installment of the award winning series, (THE KITCHEN B*TCH, 2nd PLACE in both Romantic Comedy and Women's Fiction, General, THE BOOKFEST 2023.)

Schoolteacher Skye Daniels has lived her life pretty much standing in the shadow of her rock star, twin brother, Slade, who is the founder of the band, Stolengold. Having had her heart broken by a boyfriend who was only using her to try to get into Slade's band, and having also been used by women who only wanted to be her 'friend' in order to get closer to Slade, she'd learned to trust no one except herself, and that a long-term relationship was something she’d never believe in or want again.

After giving up her teaching position and spending three years working for her childhood best friend, Annabeth, playing the role of kid-watching, housekeeping superhero....her life seemed simple, with no need for any more drama. She has her independence, a great salary and is surrounded by family and her bestie.

That is until Skye finds herself in Florida with Annabeth to attend a Stolengold concert, and after meeting their bassist...tall, handsome, tattooed, and very British Saint James, Skye is certain he’s nothing more than an annoying, ‘Brit rock nightmare’ who she’d never want to talk to, much less have any interest in romantically.

Talented, intellectual, loud and always craving the spotlight, Saint James has devoted much of his time to living the stereotypical rock star lifestyle.

But after a round of smart-assed banter on the beach, a searing hot kiss on the dance floor at Slade and Annabeth's wedding and a wager that turns into a date, Skye soon discovers that hidden deep beneath the wild, rocker persona is the sensitive soul of a man who's lived through a frighteningly dark and tragic past that has left deep scars on both his body and his soul. Scars that have also led him to a new path in life that shows he’s grown far beyond the unhealed childhood trauma, and that he is exactly the kind of man that Skye would want to spend her life with.

But Slade has seen how Saint James conducted his life, partying out on the road with the band in the past. And he made it VERY clear that there was no way he'd ever allow or want him going near his sister, when they were on their trip to Florida...long before Skye discovered what kind of man Saint James really is underneath it all.

Will Slade accept their relationship...or will it cause a family rift and possibly be the end of Stolengold's current line-up?

Other titles by Ms. Lucas: Blood from a Stone (2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards Second Round Pick); a modern-gothic romance sprinkled with a bit of paranormal intrigue, plenty of humor and is a touching story of redemption and the power of the human spirit. It has received glowing reviews from readers and reviewers alike.

Skye Daniels is a school teacher whose twin brother is in one of the top rock bands in the world. Having been unlucky in love in the past, she has trouble trusting anyone, least of all men.

Then she meets Derek St. James, British bad boy and bass player for her brother's band, at a concert. When he kisses her at her brother's wedding, she has trouble getting him out of her mind. She refuses to fall for him though. He's got a checkered past, and he's everything she doesn't need in her life. Derek, however, refuses to give up when it comes to her because he truly believes they are meant to be. When he finally talks her into a date, Skye isn't sure what to believe about him, especially when he's not acting the way she expects and seems more intelligent than she first perceived. Yet, she doesn't know whether she should trust this side of him or if he's too good to be true. Her brother is never going to approve of them seeing each other anyway, so there's no point in getting her hopes up. Besides, what happens if things between them fail?

The story is good, kind of sweet in that neither of these people has navigated a relationship like this before, though Skye has come awfully close. Many of the situational things help us get to know who the characters are and what drives them to feel the way they do. There was even a scene toward the end that had me little choked up.

However, I have several reservations concerning this novel.
1. I felt the editing (if there was any) was practically non-existent. I didn't see any mention of an editor in the ebook copy I have. Between run-on sentences and the lack of proper punctuation, I felt like I needed to reread several of the sentences so that I could be sure of what they meant.
2. The use of "very" and "LOL" were repeated so many times that it became distracting and made me cringe every time they were used.
3. Though the story was told in present tense, there were a few times when it fell into past tense - and not in a moment when the characters were looking back on something from their past.
3. Some things were repeated too often. For example: the fact that she felt she lived in her brother's shadow.
4. I thought much of the story was too superficial. I wanted these characters to be deeper so that I'd feel more invested in them and their relationships with each other, but I had a hard time feeling it. That one scene with the young girl on the stage toward the end tells me that the author can write moving literature, but I didn't feel like that thread carried through the entire story.
5. This last one might be a personal preference, but I do not appreciate it when a story is told as though the main character is speaking directly to me. Stories told from that perspective leave no room for me to imagine myself in the heroine's place, and I think that takes away from the imagination. I don't want to be the person the main character talks to in confidence - I want to be the main character. A great author once told me that the only character who should be able to speak directly to the audience is Deadpool, and I completely agree.

The story has good bones, and I can certainly see why people liked it. I love a good rock-star romance, especially the kind where the rock star is so sure of a relationship while the other person is not. However, I just felt it had too many underlying issues, which is why I could only give it three stars.

This the first book I've read by this author, even though this is the second book in the series I was able to read it without reading the first book. I have mixed feelings about this book. let me explain...

The characters are great, Derek aka Saint James and Skye are easy to relate to as well as all the secondary characters. The world is well developed. The plot and flow of the book was a little slow for me but that is just my preference, it does not take way from the story. It is a great story of overcoming one’s past and mistakes to make a better version of yourself. The issue I have is the way the book was written, no mind you this is a personal preference, but this story is written in like a first-person past tense, meaning it feels like the MFC is telling the story as if it has all already happened and I could not fully emerge myself in the story. Overall if you don’t mind the tense the book is written in then I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.
