The Bone Garden

Rate this book
An introduction/prequel novelette to the characters and world of the upcoming novella series entitled THE GOREYS about a misunderstood twenty-four-year-old and his insane, serial killer sister.>

Perry and Violet Gorey aren't normal and they know this. Violet is in training to become a serial killer like her beloved mother and Perry, well, he's not sure who he wants to be later in life. But on the morning of his sixteenth birthday, he gets himself into a gigantic mess that almost costs him his life. How will he get himself out of it unscathed and still breathing?

✸✸✸ Please note that this novelette is graphic and has language and sexual content not suitable for readers under 18. But if you are a sick little teenager and you enjoy reads like this, be my fucking guest.

Very short story introducing an upcoming series. 16 years old Perry Gorey is telling us his story between bantering with his 13 years old sister Violet and crushing on a neighbouring jock.
I liked his gentle voice and the quick, abstenly told hints at something being wrong with his family.... Until there is no doubt, something is serial killing wrong. And gory.

Definitely waiting for book #1 to see how it turns out.

I found this book was not at all about perrys sister and his mothers serial killing habits. It was more like an erotic gay novelette with a murder twist. Either way the writing was very nice but nothing was explained how people in the town just murder and get away with it. Poor to no character development and too short to be creepy, there was few lines of horror. Overall this would have been a good book if it were longer but the swearing and sex is not my taste.

Well, that was interesting.
Since this was only a novelette I am holding off one star until I read the first book in The Goreys series, but I am really interested about how the story in the novel will shape up after reading this disturbing yet interesting prequel novelette.
Can't wait to read the first book in the series!

The Bone Garden is a prequel novelette for The Goreys series written by Clover Donovan. This was a really interesting novelette. This is an introduction to a world that I want to read more of. Perry Gorey isn't a serial killer. His mother is. His younger sister is a serial killer in training. If you stopped right there I would already be interested in reading it. Now add in the fact that Perry Gorey is gay and there was no way I was not trying this series out.

I really loved seeing this world from Perry’s perspective. Perry is a really great character. I love that he still has some innocence and hopefulness even when his mother kills people every so often in their basement. On Perry’s 16th birthday he gets himself into some trouble because of just following his own desire to interact with people. I feel like it’s something he doesn't do often because he doesn't want anyone getting too close to his family.

I love the way the suspense grew in this story. I didn't know what was going to happen and when things went bad they went bad fast. I also loved the relationship Perry has with his sister and his mother. The way his mother is characterized is crazy good. His sister Violet is definitely someone I want to see develop.

I’m not a big horror or gore fan so I’ll probably be quickly reading over parts of it, but I’ll still probably go to the next book in the Gorey’s series because when do you ever get to read about what it would be like to be in a family of serial killers. Plus I love a good story with a gay main character. That being said this story is definitely for readers 18 and over. There is some sexual content and some very gory moments as well.

This short intro to a new set of characters was a good one. I liked meeting Perry and his sister and mother but I did feel it was a bit rushed. I know prequels tend to be shorter and that is okay but I felt like we got a small bit of what the characters may be like. It definitely got my mind going with what comes next though and the writing was short but well done. It did seem a bit choppy and jumpy from time to time. The reality of the scenes with Perry and Jacob and Kevin was very much there and I know some people were saying they are not sure about a particular scene and I admit it took me off guard too, but it was kind of a catalyst I think for what may come next and also what happened right after it.

Christian did a nice job introducing the characters in a concise way but I did want to know just a bit more about them but I am giving this 3.5 stars and am looking forward to where Christian takes this new crop of characters!

I can't even begin to describe how I feel about this book. If you are sensitive to gory/sexual things this story may scare the shit out of you. I really did like the story it's definitely different from other stories I've read but overall it was pretty good and I think I can get into the rest of the series when it comes out.

There aren't words I can use to describe this book. I'm more of a little mind blown. It's so different and unique that I just can't describe it and I mean that in a very good way.

A quick gory and perverted little story. I can't tell you how much I loved Violet's scene... (if you read it you'll know which one I mean...) Yeah, totally loved Violet.
Can't wait for the next book!

I like this book/novella for the modern twisted of an Addams Family type family. I think if the Addams Family could go as modern and more twisted this would be something like they would become. I liked the character development and can't wait to see what happens in the future with them.

Twisted Family Values

The Goreys are not like other families you may have encountered. They all share the same values, only those values tend to be diametrically opposed to those of society.

Perry and Violet are the two Gorey teenagers. As the story opens, Violet is planting animal bones upright in the garden, and telling Perry that soon they will be augmented with human bones. It is Perry's birthday. He calls her crazy, but does not contradict the fact that she will accomplish her goal.

A group of townies walks up the road, and here is where trouble starts, continues and ends, because Gorey's don't play well with others. Clover Donovan does a superb job of building the suspense to a white-knuckle level until I was not sure at one point if I wanted to keep reading.

He is a true horror writer, and The Bone Garden is not for the faint of heart. I am not saying this lightly. There was vulgarity, male homosexuality, serious violence and murder. It should be read by adults only.

By the time you get to the end of this short story, Mr. Donovan has eluded to a few things in the ending, and if you really think about what he is actually saying, is creepier than the preceding story by a factor of ten. Yuck!

This is a prequel to a full novel named The Goreys that should be published at the end of 2014/beginning of 2015. A short story about the family hit me like a right cross. I can't imagine what the Gorey's at full strength novel length would do to me. I might have to lie down for a day or two to recuperate from the impact. I'm willing to take that chance!

Highly Recommended for Thrill Seekers, Risk Takers, Horror Fans, Lunatic Fringe and People from Dysfunctional Families.

ϟPerfect introduction to a series!ϟ

✍: I loved Perry and Violet was my favorite. It was definitely different, something I've never read before but now I want to read the first book in the series badly. I do have to warn people that it is graphic there is some gay sexual thaaaangs and lots of bl00d. I'm interested to see what Perry and Violet are like in their twenties in the first book. It's short but it sets up for the series well I need the first book NOWwwwwWWWWWwwwwwWW.

I thought it was pretty good, it definitely kept me interested and I'd like to read on in the series. It's free right now on amazon.com and was worth the read IMO. I liked Violet a lot as a character can't wait to see how she progresses in the next installment.
