This is mainly a chronological and, I hope, sometimes humorous account of my numerous short visits to Xi'an and Shenyang in China over the past year to give some travel tips and share experiences. I do skip around a little to mix experiences and advice in more or less equal measure. Xi'an, like Shenyang, although both historic cities, which served as capital cities for some dynasties, do not have as many foreign visitors as Beijing and Shanghai. I think that makes them more interesting because the people are not as used to seeing foreigners so the interactions have more quirks. The photos are my own. It may be useful if you're planning to visit Xi'an, or indeed China, as many of the points I make are relevant to China more generally.
