My Rating: 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐✨
Duet Rating: TBD

We Have:
✅ Why Choose (MFM, No MM)
✅ Dominant Golden Retriever Energy
✅ Broody Bestie Muscle Man
✅ Ride-or-Die Best Friend
✅ Mafia-ish Background
✅ Emotional Intelligence + Smutty AF Scenes 💦

Soooo this duet..... Technically connected, but this first book wraps things up with a bow—or maybe a ball gag—because while it has a happily ever after, that shit was earned.

Now let me just say—the stress this book put me through was disrespectful as fuck. The kind of disrespect I like, apparently, because I rode that sucker out with zero breaks. ZERO. I needed to hydrate, get a grip, maybe journal—but no, I stayed planted and sweaty because this book would not let me go.

Let’s start with the smut, because priorities. This is the kind of smut that makes you thank the universe you didn’t wear jeans to bed. It’s MFM, no MM, with a dominant golden retriever-type who redefined what I thought was possible with soft-boy energy and a filthy fucking mouth. Like, this man gives cuddle and command. And when he speaks - baaayyybeeeee - My soul leaves my body and claps.

Then there’s the broody one. Of course he’s the golden’s ride-or-die. Of course they share. Of course he’s the stoic type who silently bleeds loyalty and would burn the world down for the people he loves. Sir, please—wreck me gently.

I am obsessed with the FMC. She’s smart, sharp, emotionally stable (!!!), and instead of spiraling into the usual miscommunication pit, this woman says, “I just need time to process.” QUEEN BEHAVIOR. 10/10 would die for her.

oh oh oh and HER bestie..... she's just as much a ride-or-die side character who walks in on a literal cuddle orgy and just kinda shrugs like “good for you, babe.” I want her in my real life.

On to the plot.... yea it’s there. Oh, it’s there. There’s a countdown to fucking death, which was rude as hell. Watching it tick closer made me want to throw my Kindle, but I didn’t—because I had no time. I had to know. The pacing kept me locked in, stressed, and feral.

This is one of those rare smutty reads that doesn’t phone it in. It balances plot and spice like a pro. Not too light, not too heavy, but just enough depth to keep your brain and your panties involved. A palate cleanser with BITE. Like—yes, I needed fresh underwear, but I also walked away emotionally fulfilled and a little pissed I didn’t have a pair of knee-high Doc Martens to stomp around in afterward. (You’ll get the point after you read)

If you’re into filthy mouths, adult characters who communicate, emotional heat, and a little mafia-lite chaos wrapped around toe-curling scenes that’ll ruin your damn week.... Slide this one up the TBR.
Oh, last but certianly not least…..Christmas was cute, but New Year’s... Broke me in the best way. 💦💦💦💦IN👏 THEE👏 BEST👏 WAY👏 - Read the book and tell me which holiday was your favorite….

WOW! This was… this was great! I honestly was hooked the second I started reading and then the layers just kept going and going!

Imogen was living a very normal life seemingly until she moved to Boston for college. Her dad had to managed to get her an apartment for her that way while he was in Boston for work he could swing by and visit.

Imogen never questioned much when it came to her father, and hadn’t needed to until she met Auley and Key.

I thought I knew EXACTLY where this book was going and then I got flipped upside down and I don’t know if I’ve recovered. I cannot wait to get more information about the Epilogue 2, but I know I’m about to be edged for god knows how long. Thank you for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book Loren!

Spice: 3

Tropes:
hidden identity
Scottish Organization
slow burn
why choose
Guy next door
Multiple POVs

Shew weee! What a ride was Burn! From the very beginning we're on a count down to when Hank dies. It's not a spoiler. But Who is Hank? Why are we counting down to his death? Hank is the father of the FMC, Imogen. What's beautiful about Burn, is that while we're counting down to Hank's death, we're also learning about him, falling in love with his character- I definitely did- and then we're starting to count down to our inevitable heartbreak. I love a good heart pull.

Meanwhile, we're following Imogen and her first year at college in Boston. Hank's taught her her whole life to always be aware of her surroundings. Maybe in preparation for the truth to come out-- because boy does Hank have a secret that can/will change to Imogen's whole world. I liked Imogen. She's smart, witty, and takes no shit. She also has 2 beautiful men fawning after her....

Which would be Key and Auley. Man, what is it with men with tattoos and Scottish (even slightly there) accents? Ya had me at "ye ken." But not everything is what it seems. Key works for the "Scottish Organization" and his mission can jeopardize Imogen's world too.

I loved Burn. I loved the banter, the SPICE (yall the SPICE was great), and all the charcters. They all had something to provide and I loved the multiple POV Burn provides. The ending was, well I'm not going to put spoilers but let's say I am going to need a book 2!

Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I was on vacation while reading this book, which is why it took way longer than I’d like to finish. However, every chance I got I read it. I loved the development of the characters, the world building and mind fuck of the plot. The spice was exactly what I love, a perfect why chose. Such a great book, well done!!! Thank you for allowing me to read early ❤️

I had the absolute privilege of reading an early copy of this novel, and have been waiting for the moment I could shout across the Internet about how much I loved this book.

The first piece that hooked me right in was the relationship between the main character and her father. They truly care about each other, and that is such a driving force throughout the story.

Add in the countdown at the beginning of each chapter, and I was a stressed out mess by the time we got to 1 day left. A very invested mess, but my gosh my heart was pounding! (In a good way)

The way found family is approached feels so natural as well, and you get a good for feel how much the characters care for one another. Each character in the story has a unique relationship with the other players in the story, creating a dynamic that pulls you into the middle of each relationship like you are experiencing it yourself.

As always, Loren’s humor shines throughout this novel. She’s able to take the reader from intense thriller scenes, to mystery vibes, and have you laughing out loud in the next moment before melting into the love story.

The story kept me hooked the entire time, because I just had to see what happened next. The pacing was perfect to feel like you’re moving through the story, but at a rate that isn’t rushed or forced.

I truly loved this book so much, and I’m so excited to recommend it to everyone I know.
Read it!!!

Burn is STUNNING. First, who doesn't love a good accent? 😏 I mean COME ONNNN! 😮‍💨

I absolutely love the relationship Imogen has with her Father in this novel. Idk there was just something so refreshing reading about a solid familial relationship within an over arching plot!

When Imogen moves to Boston for college she luckily has her dad to help her get this duplex so he can visit when he's in town for work. While moving in, she meets her new neighbor, Auley. A Greek God lookin fella with a bit of a Scottish accent, can we say, swoon? 😉

Everything is not as it seems in this novel and you'll quickly find yourself immersed in this fast paced plot. Thank you to Loren for this super fun and engaging piece, I personally cannot wait to see what is next after reading that epilogue! I'm dying to read more! 💛

Since I finished reading this book, I haven't stopped thinking about it. The writing style is fantastic. There are twists you don't see coming. The characters have well-rounded personalities, and I could easily imagine them in my head. Imogen's character is incredibly sarcastic, and her relationship with her father is amazing. Her friendship with Astrid is one of my favorite parts of this book as well. Imogen is incredibly strong, and yet there's still some vulnerability there that gives her character a more realistic personality. Is there spice? Yes...yes....I'm not sure what else to say other than the male characters are drool worthy. Even with the spice, it doesn't completely overtake the storyline but adds to its progression. The main plot doesn't get overshadowed either. If you're looking for a book with a good amount of spice, great pacing, and a detailed plot with twists. I would highly recommend giving Burn a read.

Wow! This book..
What an incredible story, full of mystery, action, and spice.
I was hooked from the first chapter, I couldn’t stop reading. This author's writing style is addictive and makes you devour the book so quickly.

I loved Imogen from the beginning and her relationship with her dad was everything. She is strong, opinionated, and fierce.

I don’t want to spoil the book, but nothing is like it seems, there is a web of lies surrounding Imogen and when everything comes down, she meets her delicious Scottish neighbor, Auley.

Auley is sexy incarcerated, mysterious, and protective.
Their relationship develops naturally and the chemistry is explosive, when they add Key into the mix it is scorching hotness kaboom 💥

Loved this book and I can’t wait to read Astrid's story.

Wow. 🤯

Why choose, Scottish accent, guy next door, hidden identity. Kind of found family. Don’t want to spoil anything but Imogen’s dad is not who she think he is but in the end he was a dad to her. (Is that a spoiler, maybe a tiny one but not huge) anyway Imogen moves to Boston for school, and the book starts with a count down to the most unimaginable event in Imogen’s life.
The mystery of what has happened hooked me from the start. Her bestie is amazing and you kind of want to know more about her too. The spice between Imogen and a couple of Hot men is 🫠🫠🫠. I just can’t.

It’s always the bad boys with an accent that get me.

Had the pleasure to read ahead of release and honestly fell I love right away!!! You can’t help but fall for all the characters. Don’t just sit there! Go and read BURN now! Or not I can’t tell you what to do but I would consider it. Unless you can’t handle the heat. 😉

This book completely surprised me! I loved how Loren wrote about different sensitive and hard topics while keeping the banter and humor; it was super refreshing.

The way we are introduced to Hank is amazing. We know from the start what is going to happen, but it's impossible not to love him, even though he has so many secrets that will change the FMC's life.

The FMC is amazing—so witty and strong. I'm in love with the MMCs; I love the spice and their interactions. Even though it was super spicy, the plot was equally amazing and intriguing, and I can't wait to know more.

I 100% enjoyed this book, I loved it so much. I'm going to read everything that Loren decides to write. Thank you so much for the advanced copy!!

I want to start with a caveat: I’m not a regular reader of dark romance. It’s possible that a lot of what I didn’t enjoy about this book falls into the category of “genre-typical tropes” and that this just may not be the genre for me. So if you generally enjoy dark romance, please don’t skip this one based on my opinion alone.

I do want to call out something I did enjoy about this story, which was the relationship between Imogen and her “father,” Hank. Their scenes felt the most natural, and I looked forward to their sassy, tough love, silly back and forth banter. Their dialogue really shines, and I really liked seeing Imogen love Hank through her anger at him. Honestly, I found a lot of their scenes truly lovely.

However, their relationship isn’t the main focus of this book, and I wasn’t invested in the ones that did take center stage. Neither Auley nor Key felt developed enough as their own person to hold my attention, and the entire premise of the relationship between the duo and Imogen felt jarringly unrealistic. A great deal of the dialogue in this story falls into that category for me as well; it rings awkward or forced or just deeply unnatural in some way, most especially in the spicy scenes. I found myself completely unable to stay in the world of the story when I found myself thinking, totally bewildered, “no one has e v e r said this.”

Additionally, the construction of the narrative and the writing itself often left me feeling lost or confused. There are multiple POVs, and not every character’s voice feels necessary to the story. Chapters often stop in what feels like mid-thought to pick up with someone else; sometimes that person is in the same room, sometimes they’re in a completely different place doing something totally different. Particular adjectives or turns of phrase or, most often, nicknames are deeply overused, sometimes to the point where you’ll find the same phrase three or four times on one page. And the plot resolved itself far too easily and neatly for as much drama as had been built around it for nearly two in-world decades.

This is clearly just not the book for me for a lot of different reasons. Nothing really hit home for me, but if you’re a dark romance connoisseur, you very well may enjoy this yourself.

This story is so different and compelling, I absolutely love the multiple pov where you can get everyones side of the story. The words flow so naturally. Bloody brilliant!
The plot line was so meticulously crafted in a way that the bombs dropped at the perfect timing and the foreshadowing was always JUST tingling in the forefront of your mind while still leaving you wondering and eager to put the puzzle together!

EEK the shriek I SHRUK when Key called Imogen his Little Savage for the first time?! Omg. Please, take me away. Her and Auley were great but her, Auley AND KEY… my god, have I just passed and went to heaven?? The relationship between the three of them was just perfect, they each fit together like three pieces to a puzzle with the perfect balance of rough and soft, sweet and spicy, dangerous and calm ❤️‍🔥

Can we talk about how goddamn strong imogen is, even when her entire world as she knows it is flipped upside down and throws her in a loop? This FMC is one of my favorites that I’ve read of, truly! Her personality was shining through her every word, thought, and action but she is like a phoenix that can’t be held back. Kind of like Auley’s tattoo ;)

And HANK, god we can’t forget him. I love hank so much, if anyone ever asks me, my dads name is Hank 🤣 can he please adopt me? gosh my heartstrings were thoroughly TUGGED and damn near ripped out because of him 🥹 that’s all I will say but this healed a piece of my daddy issues lol

the entire story from the plot to the tension to the minor details to the side characters to the writing and chapter style…just all of it is so so well done 🥹 I fell in love with the characters; they felt so real, and I felt like I was there experiencing everything alongside them. This is 10000% a story that will stay with me forever. And I cannot WAIT for my girl Astrid’s story 👀

Burn is an excellent example of a "why choose" novel. I loved the subplot of her family's history and how it added to the "chosen family" trope. Imogen was a perfect example of a badass FMC "little savage" (ifyyk) that can also have a submissive side. I do wish that her relationships with Auley and Key had a bit more depth, it seemed to happen rather quickly without much reason. However, the dynamic between the three was very fun.
I did actually enjoy how the chapters occasionally went back in time to give you that world building aspect. It took me a while to get used to, but once I did I think it really helped me to fully understand the story.
Overall, this was a great read. I was invested from the beginning and stayed invested. It's a sort of family mystery, thriller that will keep you on your toes the entire book.

Where does the author come up with these interesting plot ideas? How do the characters have such unique yet believable lives? And when does the movie come out?

Loren Lee has done it again. She wrote a complicated story with constantly changing POVs and a timeline that jumps around more than a kangaroo on a trampoline… but it somehow works. I was drawn in from the beginning even though the plot kept me guessing. I didn’t have to wait long for answers and I got to know the really unique characters in the meantime. Not to mention, I laughed at the FMCs snark and swooned at the MMCs.

It’s the movie The Professional meets Leather & Lark. Plus the spy plot of The Chemist and the sexy Scottish accents of Outlander.
Simultaneously, this author’s books are unlike anything else I’ve read.

This was a really good read.
The plot kept me engaged the whole time, I loved the backstory and countdown aspect of things.
I particularly love a badass FMC so was very happy with this one.
Add to that, not one, but two fantastic MMCs and I’m a happy reader.
The spice was sprinkled throughout enough to make me happy and I loved the poly HEA.
The dynamic between all of the characters was entertaining and had me laughing out loud more than once.
This is my first book by this author and I’m really excited for the next instalment to find out Astrid’s story.
I enjoyed the authors writing style and will happily recommend this one.

I was super lucky to get an advanced copy of this book and really enjoyed it. Loren Lee’s Burn takes you on an exciting, twisty journey with Imogen, a small-town California girl who's venturing off to college in Boston. It's the farthest she’s ever been from home and from her dad, Hank. The two are very close. What starts off as a typical coming-of-age story quickly shifts into something far more intense, with romance, secrets and danger throughout.

Small spoiler alert! The heart of the book is the bond between Imogen and her father. Hank raised her as his own, but she soon learns he’s not her biological father—he's a former hitman who found her as a baby after completing a mission to kill her parents. That changes many things for Imogen, yet her loyalty to Hank never wavers. Even though she feels betrayed by the truth about her past, she ultimately risks her own safety to protect him, which really drives home the idea that family is more than just blood.

On the romance side, things get complicated for Imogen when she meets her good looking neighbor, Auley, and his best friend, Key. There is another plot twist there but I won't spoil that one. There’s definite tension between Imogen and both men, leading to some steamy scenes. This might surprise you since Imogen is a strong-willed character. It will definitely grab your attention. Lee does a good job balancing the romance with the action, and the story moves quickly with plenty of twists to keep things interesting.

Compared to her first book, Burn feels more developed. The plot is stronger, the pace faster and the stakes are higher. For readers who love a mix of romance, action and a few twists, this book delivers and is hard to put down.

Welp, Burn was… something. I’ll give it this, it was intriguing enough to keep me turning pages. For anyone curious, it’s an MFM setup featuring two brooding Scottish hunks who fall for the daughter of a retired hitman. The setup alone had me intrigued, and I was ready for some dark, spicy chaos.

But then came the dirty talk. Oh boy. Some parts were pure cringe, and not even in a fun way. The nicknames “Nightmare” and “Savage” were just… why? They weren’t even on my ick list before this book, but congratulations, they are now. And the whole “sir, may I have some more 🍆 sir?” energy was funny at first, but after a few rounds I just wanted to shake the characters and yell, “Speak like a normal human being already!”

The story had potential, but between the awkward dirty talk and the over-the-top names, it lost a lot of steam. Entertaining? Sure. Sexy? Kind of. Ridiculous? Absolutely. Three stars, mostly because I finished it and didn’t throw my Kindle across the room.

The constant suspense, secrets and plot twists were all put together so perfectly in this book

I was on the edge of my seat with every chapter waiting - and dreading - for that countdown to end.

The relationship Imogen has with her father was so wholesome and sweet🥺 and getting to see how it started was definitely unexpected.

As for the relationship between Imogen and Auley is simultaneously sweet and cute and very hot. And grows to be even hotter when it develops🥵🥵

Really loved reading this and enjoyed all aspects of the story.

“I loved this book! The writing is fast paced, and the multi-POV kept me engaged and helped me connect with the different characters. I found Loren's writing style to to be quick and easy to read, with a healthy dose of humor. I'm not an expert on the Mafia romance sub-genre, but Burn seems to me to be a refreshingly non-broody take on the sub-genre.”
