Lost in Embers

Rate this book
Welcome to the prison that is my mind, also known as my personal hell.

For years, I’ve hidden the scars from the burns of my dreams, but they’re a constant reminder that my fears came true. My dreams are more like an alternate reality, but maybe that means the Irish man who captivates my dreams is real, too? My vision blurs between two realms, unable to tell the difference.

What’s more, my brother, Victor, and his dark and unexpected presence for more than the occasional call means something is amiss. As I pull the thread to the mystery of my destiny and connect with people who can help me fulfill it, the darkness I discover lurking behind every corner waits to consume me.

A rebellion brews around me, and the humans – a group I once called my own – are blissfully unaware of the power surrounding them. With grave danger everywhere, they require me to make the ultimate sacrifice.

My life.

To survive, I make a desperate bargain to train with a man I barely know, but will he give me answers? Or is he the reason those beautiful deep Irish irises I dream of are replaced by the most intense green eyes I’ve ever seen, staring back into mine.

Please note I was in the ARC team for this book and sent early feedback to the admin team, so the author may have had time to edit the book before release. My honest opinions laid out below are based on the ARC version I read pre-launch.

The blurb about the story sounded right up my street so I was stoked to be accepted to the ARC team. Indeed, the premise of this book may well have potential, however the execution is unfortunately poor.

There are plot holes leaving the reader not really understanding what is happening on multiple occasions, and the magical elements of the story are not well explained.

The style of writing is odd. There are peculiar turns of phrase that are simply not correct, and in the copy I read there were many, many grammatical errors.

There is little in way of plot development or character arc, which may have been done to tempt readers to book 2 but resulted in me not caring much about the main characters and not bothering a whole lot about what happens to them next.

On top of that, there is lots of ‘telling’, and very little ‘showing’, which I think is partly to blame for the lack of engagement as a reader.

I did finish reading, as I wanted to give helpful feedback to the author, however was tempted to DNF a few times as it simply wasn’t engaging. Even by the end of the story I wasn’t sure about the magical world and how the characters should fit into it (eg at the end witches and werewolves are suddenly thrown in).

I won’t be reading book 2, and sadly would not consider reading another book by this author at this point.

I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

ARC Review. Ava is discovering herself and trying to piece together her mystery all while being courted by these adoring men. Though not all of these guys have her best interests at heart. Will she be able to find herself and understand her hearts desires?

Overall it was a good read. At first I was a bit skeptical on how the story was going to go but I definitely got sucked in after the first few chapters. There is definitely some sexual tension going on in this book that will make you not want to put this book down. Cannot wait until the second book comes out!

An interesting twist on soulmates.

LOST IN EMBERS follows Ava, a young woman plagued by very realistic dreams. When she goes on vacation with her friends, she meets Aidan, the charming Irish man from her dreams, and she understands there is more to these dreams than she originally thought. This leads to discovering family secrets and truths about herself she could have never imagined, like the fact that she apparently has lived past lives. Not to mention that there is a rebellion brewing and Ava seems to be at the center of it all.

This book was really surprising and original in the concept of soulmates and of Ava’s past lives. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered it in the way I’ve read in this book. I especially loved the way it was structured and how we uncovered the truth little by little, which speaks to my mystery-loving soul.

As for the romance in this book, there two love interests in this book and both very valid if one considers the connection they have with Ava. I have to be honest, I’m not sure who I prefer to see her end up with because both Aidan and Kieran have qualities that I usually like in a love interest AND they both have history with Ava. I would have preferred seeing a bit of a slower burn with both of them at least on Ava’s part.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

ARC Review
I respect anyone who puts the time and energy into writing but this did not work for me. I really struggled to finish it but continued, hoping things would come together but they never did.

It felt like the author tried to take 10 different concepts of a story and throw them into one. I enjoy heavy plot but this wasn’t that. It just was unfocused.

The writing needs a lot of work. There’s a lot of simple sentences which made reading it difficult and lacked flow. The dialogue felt stunted and unnatural.

I felt no connection to any of the characters and found their motivations confusing and lacking depth.

There some promising concepts but it needs to be heavily edited not just for errors but also for continuity.

Fans of fantasy romance looking for an unique story, gotta check out this book! It brings a new twist to past lives and dream connections. 😍❤️

It follows Ava, a young woman haunted by vivid dreams that blur the lines of reality. What if the men she sees in her dreams are real? 😱 If you enjoy morally grey characters that would burn the world for her, you will like this! With the sudden reappearance of her estranged brother and the looming threat of a rebellion, she uncovers a hidden darkness that could consume her… 👀 I felt like an investigator figuring out the truth alongside Ava, the author gives us little hints little by little which gives it a perfect pacing. The writing is seamless and had me turning pages at night wondering what was happening!😍

What you can expect:
✨Fated mates & soulmates
✨Prophecies
✨Morally grey characters
✨he falls first
✨ multiple love interests
✨Burn the world for you
✨strong female lead
✨Family Secrets

The good news, it really never occurred to me to DNF, which is why I gave it at least 2 stars. In fact, I flew through it. The premise was so promising, and I was just waiting for things to build. Problem was, it never really did.

The characters lack depth (and possess nearly unrealistically poor decision-making skills). Everyone who comes within 5 feet of the FMC can’t help but fall madly in love with her, but who knows why because she’s got no redeeming qualities besides being hot and a ‘good judge of character’. The love triangle is borderline comical with how her choices are presented. One of course is the brash bad guy who I guess is supposed to be morally grey, and the other is just sooooo cinnamon roll sweet, however will she decide.

The writing is painfully juvenile. The dialogue between characters is just cringe, I found myself constantly asking “who talks like this?!?!”. I’m also fairly certain the author used the ARC team as editors instead of getting it edited prior judging by how many OBVIOUS errors there were. I needed to read the FIRST SENTENCE of the book like 4 times to figure out what she was trying to say because of a misplaced comma. There’s no way an editor wouldn’t have caught that, or Grammarly.

Literally nothing happens in the first half of the whole book to move the plot, unless you include the morally grey moody love interest who treats her like crap so she’s sad. Then, in what seems to be a desperate act to explain things, we get a long letter that (poorly) explains some things. And then we get a few more chapters of spoon-fed backstory. Insert fantasy book trials here. And they’re already over because of course the FMC is just… THAT amazing even though she has no idea what’s going on.

By the end of the book, I couldn’t describe the magic system, didn’t know why our FMC seemed to be the most important person in the world, what happened with our mysterious best friend and mother who are heavily hinted at having ulterior motives, or what war were getting ready for and why. I know it’s a trilogy, but its like the author plans to keep everything painfully vague to keep you reading the series due to confusion instead of you being engaged and interested and wanting to see where it goes. Ill give the second book a shot, as this was my first ARC read and I feel honor bound to finish it out. But I’m not optimistic about it based on how much will need to still be explained plus setting up the big final battle.

I don't even know where to begin with this book. I was given an ARC copy for an honest review and that is what this is.
I had to make it to 54% before ANYTHING started to make the slightest bit of sense. I expressed concerns about this and was told multiple times that is makes more sense the second time time you read the book.
Magic that isn't explained, relationships that don't make sense and a main character that is supposed to have amazing instincts and then suddenly trusts everyone she meets on sight while knowing she is being hunted by a group of magic users who want to kill her?
And then we get to the hunger games portion of the book, it is supposed to be a trial to understand war but it is so rushed and nothing is explained.
Honestly, I haven't finished the book yet but at 80% I can't imagine it is going to redeem itself at the end.
I did not take stars away for grammar errors and the wrong use of words since I am hoping those were corrected before final publishing.

This book. Wow. It's absolutely incredible. The world building, the story, the characters, the DOG, the everything - it is all just so beautifully done, and I'm beyond hooked!

I absolutely loved every single aspect of this book, from the dedication to the very last page!

Poor Ava has no idea about who she truly is until Aidan comes along and starts helping her see her true reality. But it's all so much happening at once that she's completely unsure how to tackle everything.

There are so many unanswered questions here...ohhh, and let's not forget about that cliffy....excuse me, ma'am, but I need it, like yesterday! Lol.

I am so beyond excited for the next book and to see what happens next!

Also - I can't choose between Aidan or Kieran. Please don't make me!

I loved this book! I wasn’t sure which direction I was going to go when the beginning didn’t snag me as quickly as I expected. For this reason it took me a little longer than anticipated to really get going in the story, but… Boy am I sure glad I committed!! I am terrible about writing a review without spoiling a story, but if you’re into fantasy that includes both romance and depth (something I find many authors struggle to balance well) this book is it! I was able to immerse myself in the world and story, as well as connect with the characters’ feelings. I also found this to be original piece of work, rather than a watered down version of another book of similar premise. I eagerly await book 2!

I received my copy of this book as an ARC; my opinions are my own.

I received this book as an ARC and love how much others have enjoyed this read but it wasn’t for me.

I dnf’d this book at 34% after trying to read it over a month period. The writing is problematic and the dialogue between the characters just didn’t flow well. The FMC is really hard to like. I have read that her memories were tampered with which is evident through the behaviors of some characters early on, but she just doesn’t seem intelligent. In one sentence the FMC is scared and unsure by the mysterious MMC and by the next sentence she’s giggling and mad that something romantic was ruined by a phone call that the MMC took after walking her to her room. Did I mention this MMC just killed someone and the FMC never questioned it. The FMC was beyond naive and never questioned anything. I didn’t even make it to the introduction of the second MMC or the twist in the book.

The concept of the book was intriguing to me but I just couldn’t get past the poor editing and the way the story was being told.

Wishing the author all the best with the next two books.

'Lost in Embers' by M.L. Barrie started off a bit slow, but just like flames can ignite from the smallest of embers, the story quickly blazed into an inferno that had me completely hooked. Once the plot picked up, it was impossible to put down, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

This captivating romantasy pulls you into a world full of magic, mystery, danger, and love. The vivid world-building and undeniably charming characters really stood out for me. **Bonus: you get two loveable, make-you-weak-in-the-knees MMCs, and an adorable doggo.**

The emotional stakes are high, and the complex relationships add a unique depth to the story. If you are a fan of fantasy romance with a darker edge and plenty of intrigue, this book is definitely worth picking up.

I cannot wait to see what Barrie has in store for us in Book 2.

I read this as my first ARC read and the experience was awesome!! It’s a little confusing at first since there is a lot of lore/ explanations about this fantasy world but it becomes more clear the more you read. You learn about this world, its creatures, and snippets about the main character, Ava’s, life just as she does in the book. The male characters in the book are definitely swoon worthy.

I truly didn’t feel like there were slow parts and there were many nights I stayed up late to continue reading. You are constantly trying to guess the characters intentions and wonder if characters could be trusted. There are twists thrown in throughout the book (and that cliffhanger!? OMG!!) Things are definitely not what they seem!

I can’t wait to see where the story picks up in the rest of the series! Such a solid read! I finished the book a few weeks ago and I am still thinking about it! I can’t recommend this book enough!

I really did not know what to expect with this book ("some romance, an Irish heart throb, fated mates, some magic", great), and I was really happily surprised.

Without trying to spoil anything too much, I really thought I was just in for enjoying a fun love story with some complex relationships (that seemed to have been in existence for lifetimes) and that people wouldn't be quite what they seemed.
What I got was that, but that these people were REALLY not just what they seemed (especially in the normal human sense), a lot more magic, and a war with a history spanning lifetimes.

I find myself confused by the history, desperate to understand the whole history, dying to confirm my suspicions about certain characters, and firmly in Camp Aiden.

Very excited to read the next one (and recommend this to my bookish friends once it's freely available so they can join me in Rising From Ash Saga limbo).
(Thank you to ML. Barrie for allowing me to be a part of her ARC team for this book, the opportunity to read it early, and the gift of an early read!)

Review for ARC

It was very exciting to be selected for an ARC. The unique world/concept is what intrigued me the most about this story. There is magic, supernatural powers, romance, and a dream vs reality theme.

Since the book is written first person, you’re getting bits and pieces of information at a time in line with the main character. This helped keep me reading because I wanted the answers. The main character, Ava, could be infuriating at times with her not-so-smart choices, but watching Ava develop emotionally through this is what makes her endearing.

I will say the editing needs some improvements and left the book feeling like too much of a rough draft. If it hadn’t been an ARC I likely would have not finished but pushed through because the mystery was enough to keep me curious. I can’t wait to see how the characters and the author grow through the series.

Great fantasy read! A little slow at the beginning, but so unique as you learn about this amazing world right along with the FMC. It has so much - fated love, magical powers, awesome best friend connection, unanswered questions, handsome billionaire, broody sorta enemy to lover, and so much more. Plus a loyal canine companion for the FMC. No spice but some romance. Can’t wait for the rest of the books!!

I loved the character development & the banter between them! Once the story came together and started making sense for me, I became really invested and am sooo excited for the next book! ☺️

This book is a real gem! I was captivated from the start and I was out of breath until the end! There's a lot of information to take in as the story develops and it's very well written! I was so invested from the start in each of her relationships with the people around her... a lot of questions and theories came to mind and I can't wait to read more!

Pleasantly surprised! This was my first ARC read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! While the beginning was slower, it was needed to build the FMC’s background. Once the second half of the book started though, it can only be described as a roller coaster ride. I am VERY excited to read the second book, especially after that ending. Also, I hope we don’t completely lose Sofia in the remaining books as I enjoyed the go best friend relationship between her and Ava. I am excited to see where the next book goes and which way Ava will choose to go…

Lost in Embers, ARC read. All I’ve got to say is I HOPE ITS Aidan, the broody male 🤫🤣 I loved this one, Ava is finding her true self throughout the book, family secrets, second life. It’s so good, couldn’t put it down!

This book does a really good job of leading up to the second book. Can’t wait to read it next!

ARC review.
As our girl Ava (FMC) says, sweet baby Jesus.
Broody mysterious or golden retriever… what’s your vibe? This has both!
It’s a story that will definitely leave you invested and needing more! Can’t wait for the next book!
This gives off hunger games vibes with a great mix of unknown powers that are revealed and filled with so many lovable characters! It has so many elements that has your brain thinking of all sorts of theories. Loved it! It’s great how the author has written the characters so you either love them or dislike them. Gets your brain spinning on who could be shady and where the plot twists might be! Definitely recommend!

Being honest, at the beginning I was unsure because of the FM characters dialogue, sometimes like was used which is a pet hate for me in speech. You also have no clue what is going on but as it goes on, you get fully hooked and you learn more with the main character and you understand why it begins the way it does. As it all unfolds, you learn more and it begins to make sense. By the end you want to know everything and it leaves you dying for the next book 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I received this book as an ARC for my honest review and because I love lists and bullet points, here's what I have for Lost in Embers:

Tropes:
- Slow Burn
- Fated Mates
- Past Life
- Prophecies

Pros:
- Interesting fantasy and magic setup.
- A whole slew of characters who I don't know who to like or dislike quite yet. I enjoy the mystery aspect here because something tells me it's going to change so much throughout this series.
- If you are a Hunger Games fan, the second half of this book is totally for you!!
- I realize that the FMC has a fated mate as it was noted in the tropes from the author. HOWEVER. My favorite guy from the entire book is apparently NOT IT and I'm unreasonably sad about it. For some reason, I fell hard for this one random side character and I am not pleased that it's giving vibes that he'll be a bad guy or tragically dead or something in the future. Yes. I'm considering this a pro even though I'm super unhappy about it because it shows me that the author does a great job with building her characters. The other choices for her fated mate are driving me bonkers and I want to smack them all for one reason or another. But I think we all know how insufferable overprotective men can be at times and whoever ends up the actual mate will total redeem themselves. ;)

Cons:
- The flow of the story was distracting and hard to follow. However, I do feel like that was potentially the intention I get the intention but it made it hard for me to follow. I had to back track many times to figure out where I was and what was going on. I don't feel like I should be confused about where in time/world we are as much as she is. I feel like I should be LESS confused than her. But that brings me to my next issue...

This is not a factor that I included into my rating of the book as this is totally, 100% personal preference, but I've figured out that I'm not a fan of 1st person, present tense POV any longer as this is the third book in a row, from that POV, that I struggled with. I had never noticed an issue with it in the past but I guess my taste is changing. So much so that I doubt I'll carry on the series for that factor. This is NOT a reflection on the author, the book, nor my rating. It's just a matter of personal preference that I wish was more commonly put out there along with the tropes in a book. It will definitely be a determining factor for me on my entire reading list from now on. So I'm adding it here for anyone else who may be as picky as I am in that regard.

Star awards:
* - plot concept
** - character development
*** - plot execution
**** - character chemistry

Mild spoilers

This book is first person and present tense which is a bit unusual and did take a while to get my head round.

I honestly found the book a bit slow to start. I put it down and didn't find myself racing to come back to it. Ava is apparently plain and non-extraordinary but everyone is "into" her. The character conversations lacked depth and didn't serve to move the story forwards at all. It seemed like a vast majority of conversations were centered around who was more attractive. I found myself skim reading chapters and not missing a whole lot. I believe the first 100 pages covered a span of 3 days where maybe 1 interesting thing happens, and 90% of the conversations revolved around men, sex and attraction.

Ava is apparently concerned about everything happening to her but still going about her daily life as though nothing is wrong. If I was waking up covered in burns, seeing random eyes and screaming in my sleep I think I would be a little more concerned about that, and not whether my boss sends me a winky face in an email.

Let's not mention everyone being cool with one of the girls marrying a boy she just met.

Aiden would probably have you calling the cops if he approached you the way he approached Ava. I get that she's so at ease because of this deep connection, but she doesn't fight it at all.

The story does pick up around chapter 8 but the writing is still a little lackluster. However I also thought SJMs first foray into writing was lackluster, and her characters a little flat, so there's still a bright future for the series.

If I had to guess, the first 8 chapters were part of a rough draft that didn't get revisited much. The writing from chapter 9 onwards does increase in quality and I found myself starting to get invested in the characters (specifically Aiden and a slimy feeling towards Dino)

The end of the book ends on a great cliffhanger that leaves you wanting the next installment.

Let me start this by saying I am posting a quick mini review, but I will edit this at a later date with a full blown ADHD synopsis because I want people to have the chance to read it first 😂

First off- giving this a solid 4/5 stars, the book is fast paced and very entertaining, but since it’s fantasy it is *VERY* confusing right away!! It’s okay! It’s supposed to be, we’re learning things at the same pace as our lovely FMC Ava.

Ava is just a normal 25 year old woman living in a small town with her cute pup Laila, a slightly overbearing mother (who is a little too invested in Ava’s lack of a sex life), a nice job she enjoys, and a her childhood best friend Dino who she speaks to frequently.

Things really start changing for Ava as she keeps having these extremely intense dreams, well ONE repetitive dream where everything is on fire and she keeps getting burned in these dreams, but when she wakes up everything is fine. These happen so often that she cannot tell reality from her dreams and often has to be pulled out of an almost trance like state because of them.

There are two hunk of MMCs who are both pining after Ava, one is Aiden and one is Kieran. They both help her figure things out about her true identity that has been kept hidden from her for her entire life, and she starts training to help aid in a war she did not ask to be put in the middle of.

This book does end on a cliffhanger, but there’s so many plot twists that you don’t expect and it was so fun to read long and figure things out with as the FMC was learning them.

I definitely recommend this read, and I will be (im)patiently waiting for books 2-5!!! ❤️

Tropes:
supernatural creatures, mystical powers, long lost family members, memory loss/tampering with memories, past lives, overly protective MMCs, premonitions/visions and so many more!

Thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC.

The premise was interesting and the potential for the world was great. However, the execution fell short and I unfortunately had to DNF at about 20%.

The FMC was unbearable and came off as kind of dumb; I found her behavior to be obnoxious and the fact that she asked zero questions about anything was incredibly unrealistic. I barely got to know the MMC, but as far as I got, he just came across as overbearing.

The side characters were even worse; they also lacked depth and likability.

(I don't think this is a spoiler, but it might be since, again, I didn't get very far.) What ultimately made me DNF the book was when one side character met someone on their vacation, decided to not only get engaged but fully married while still on the same vacation, and decided they're moving across the country for this person right upon their return from said vacation. THEN the FMC had a full internal dialogue about how she should say something to dissuade her friend - but then said absolutely nothing and acted EXCITED for her. The former may happen in real life (hopefully not very often), but never in my wildest imagination would I think zero of that person's closest friends would say anything against it. It is so hard to buy into a book when characters act this insanely.

The writing was a bit juvenile and some sentences just didn't make any sense. There were MANY errors just in the first 20%. It's normal for ARCs to have errors, but when I'm highlighting 1-4 errors on every single page I start to wonder if there was any kind of editing (which we were told there was). I'm not confident the errors were fixed prior to publication.

Maybe if I read further, some of the behavior would have made sense; but I just couldn't.

Book Review: Lost in Embers by M.L. Barrie

Lost in Embers is a gripping, mysterious, and thrilling ride. The protagonist, Ava, is an intriguing FMC (female main character) with a haunting secret—her dreams are so vivid that she wakes up with physical evidence, like smells or even burn marks, from the otherworldly realms she visits in her sleep. These dreams are more than just nightmares; they’re alternate realities that blur the line between what’s real and what isn’t.

One of the standout aspects of this book is Ava’s complicated journey as she starts to uncover the truth about her life, one mystery at a time. The presence of her estranged brother, Victor, hints at danger lurking around every corner, and the rising rebellion in the world around her adds to the story’s tension. I loved the way M.L. Barrie weaves together Ava’s personal struggles and the broader conflict, especially when humans—blissfully unaware of the powers surrounding them—are caught up in the chaos.

The romance in this book is equally captivating. Aidan, the brooding Irish love interest, adds a layer of intrigue and tension. There’s a compelling mystery about him, and I loved how Ava’s dreams and her real-life interactions with him are entwined, with deep green eyes replacing those she initially envisioned. Their chemistry kept me hooked, and I was eager to uncover more about Aidan’s role in Ava’s story.

While Lost in Embers delivers answers to some of the many questions it raises, it definitely leaves you hanging with a cliffhanger, making me impatient for the next installment. Overall, this book is full of twists, mysteries, and romantic tension, and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy a good blend of fantasy, romance, and suspense. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Ava and Aidan’s journey!

This book was a wild ride! If you like fantasy stories where the answers are not given but earned, this is definitely something you might enjoy!

Lost In Embers follows Ava, a young woman plagued by dreams that seem too realistic--and she carries the marks in the real world to prove it. Her fears are proven true when she goes on vacation with her friends and meets Aidan, a charming and dangerous Irish man she sees in her dreams. This is the push Ava needs to start digging into her past, unveiling family secrets and a rebellion that sees her at the very center!

At first, it might be a little difficult to follow along with this story. I know I felt a little lost at times, but it's a pretty good reflection of Ava's feelings as well. She doesn't have the answers immediately, and neither does the reader! But the more Ava discovers, the more the pieces fall into place. It's a read that requires patience, but it pulls you in!

The plot was definitely the book's greatest strength in my opinion for this reason, but there's also an intricate romance storyline that involves not one but TWO love interests! One is what dark romance love interests are made of, and the other is a broody secret softie that makes us all weak in the knees. I definitely don't know where my heart is yet, and I wouldn't want to be in Ava's shoes! Because the book relies on the "past life" trope, it definitely can feel like the romances move a bit quickly, but I have faith that the fun is just beginning. I think things are about to get messy in the sequels, and I'm so excited to see it!

If you loved Shadowhunters, RUN and read this book!

I was so excited to get to read this book early, and I'm so grateful I didn't have to wait to read it!

This book follows Ava, a 25 year old with a seemingly mediocre life, working in a office, living with her mam and loyal pup, and lacking in the romance department.

However after having dreams about a mysterious man who seems to know her, and her soul seems to know him, she goes on a trip with her friends when it all starts to come together.

Without giving tooooooo many spoilers, because honestly, the feeling of getting to find out all the information with Ava is part of the story charm. Ava finds out she is so much more than a normal 25 year old girl, she is key to the survival of her kind, which leads her to discover that not everyone can be trusted, and she is so much more than she could have ever imagined, in this live, and her past lives.

It doesn't hurt that she has a beautiful Irish man absolutely obsessed with her, and their souls might just be entwined for the long haul.

Ava must come to grips with her world being turned upside down, finding out her life spans over centuries and her powers, may just be limitless.

It takes a few chapters to get into, and I would advise that some of the side characters personalities come off as "frat boy" but it's all intended. The book can start off slow paced, but the cliffhanger and plot twists will have you screaming for more.

I devoured this book in one sitting, and my only complaint is after getting to the end of it, I have to wait for book two 🥲

Also as of now, can my Aidan gals raise their hands 🫡🙋🏻‍♀️

Although Lost in Embers does have some morally grey characters, Ava is definitely not one of them. I myself am a huge fan of morally grey and morally black individuals, but Ava... she is sunshine and rainbows. She is sugar and spice and everything nice.

It was honestly to the point that I would be yelling at her while reading because she was just too accepting and too good. But, despite that, I enjoyed the frustration she instilled in me because I will enjoy any character that makes this black heart of mine feel something, even if that something is irritation and anger.

Her goofy personality and antics fit perfectly with her overall goodness. I was so excited, though, as she grew as a character while the story continued to unravel. The magic systems and creatures had a lot of originality, and I do have questions regarding a lot of it as it was not fully explained. That decision felt like an intentional one, and once you read this book you will likely understand what I mean.

The love triangles Ava finds herself in are entertaining. I am sure that everyone will have their personal choice as to who they believe she should end up with (I know I do). We are left with a cliffhanger ending, even with a bonus chapter, that honestly leaves us with even more questions than answers but hey that just means greater excitement for the next book.

Okay, can we talk about how refreshingly different this book is? Lost in Embers completely caught me off guard – in the best way possible! I mean, who doesn't love a story packed with morally grey characters making questionable choices? And the whole past-life soulmates angle? *chef's kiss*

Fair warning: it does take a minute to get going. But trust me, stick with it because once it picks up, you won't be able to put it down.

So here's the deal – we follow Ava, who's dealing with these super intense dreams that have her questioning what's real and what's just in her head. Think magic, mystery, danger, and of course, some serious romantic tension.

You're gonna love this if you're into:
- That whole soulmates across lifetimes vibe
- Characters who live in the grey area (my favourite kind!)
- Having multiple swoon-worthy love interests (because why settle?)
- Family drama with lots of juicy secrets
- The guy catching feelings first (always a fun twist!)

The emotional rollercoaster is REAL, and the way relationships get tangled up adds this amazing layer to everything. If you're into fantasy romance that's got a darker edge and keeps you guessing, seriously, grab this book. It's totally worth your time!
