This book made me realize I need to get out more… and drink more wine lol but in all seriousness the love for Marda Loop and area really shine through, giving this a very atmospheric fall read. That totally creeped me out too (the murder plot, that is).

I was hooked to this book from the very first page and it even kept me up all night because I was so into it😍
I love the writing, the short and fast-paced chapters, the characters, the cozy autumn vibes, the romance and steam, and of course, the mystery and suspense.

Louise was an amazing fmc, she's so strong and I applauded her journey of recovering from her trauma. I loved how the book portrayed that healing isn't linear and that it's completely fine to have a more "bumpy" road to recovering from trauma. Her mom, Georgie is so adorable, and I can't forget Cosette the cat!
Gregory was a cool guy too, sometimes indecisive, but I'm glad of how everything fell into perfect place by the end.

The mystery in itself was very entertaining! I was intrigued through most of it and loved how the detectives, along with Louise, was able to come to a conclusion!
The romance was perfect, a second-chance romance, with small-town vibes. And of course, the spice was pretty spicy!!

Definitely recommended if you're a crime/romance lover looking for a quick, cozy read.

Thank you to SunnyBabe PR and Mimi Gunn for an ARC copy of this book - I loved it so much!!

DNF at 40%. As a Calgarian, I really wanted to like this book. It started out a bit promising but I couldn’t get over the main characters interactions with her friends and love interest. It all felt really juvenile. The dialogue was bad. I read for a while past my initial distaste but I couldn’t get over how much I wasn’t enjoying it so I gave up. For lack of a better description, it felt very high school to me.

Reading A Kiss to Wake by Mimi Gunn felt to me like going on an unforgettable journey that tugged at my all feelings! Louise Dubois's path from fear to empowerment moved me deeply! After surviving a horrible event, her desire to regain her life and confront her past had me rooting for her every step of the way! I could feel her nervousness and exhilaration as she dealt her feelings for Gregory, an older blaze who reappears just as she's beginning to find her feet, their chemistry was unmistakable and I couldn't help but blush over their reunion amid the craziness of the emerging mystery!
.
There's nothing quite like losing yourself in a gripping mystery, where every page turns with a pulse and the intrigue of the unknown collide with blistering romance! Mimi does a perfect job! It arouses every emotion in the body, causing a tornado of excitation and need! The tension coils like a spring, and the chemistry sparkles, generating an explosion of emotions that sweeps you, Louise and Gregort are hands down my favorite couple of the Year!
.
A Kiss to Wake is a magnificently written novel that nails the ideal work of humor, romance, and suspense. I enjoyed how Mimi Gunn created sympathetic characters that felt like friends by at the end of the novel! Their shortcomings and evolution made the story feel honest and fascinating. This story left me feeling hopeful and motivated, and I highly suggest it to anybody searching for a cozy yet intriguing read that will pull at your heartstrings and keep you wondering! This was 10/10 read and we highly recommend it to every reader that loves a phenomenal cozy mystery with steamy romance, this was that good that you would never want to miss it!

This was a quick read for me! I was immediately sucked in. Louise is a survivor of a terrible attack that should have ended with her being dead. Now a couple of years later, there’s another killer on the loose… could the cases be connected?

Louise is a strong main character & I admire her for that! I feel like her friends didn’t give her enough credit for sure! I loved the mystery of this. It was fast paced & entertaining. It’s does give off fall vibes as well! Would recommend if you’re looking for a quick mystery!

Please check the trigger warnings if needed! Thanks @sunnybabepr & @mimigunnbooks for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! 🧡

Let me start off by saying that I didn't expect to love this as much as I did! It's been many many years since I have read a suspense/mystery book, since I am now a romance only girl. However, this book was the perfect mix of romance and suspense. I am also a sucker for short chapters so that was a big plus for me. I love when a book has a strong FMC who knows she doesn't need a man to protect her because she is capable of it! Can we also talk about the bachelor reference at the end? LOVE!

I am really looking forward to the second book of the series!

A Kiss to Wake by @mimigunnbooks was everything I love in a book! Romance, suspense, mystery, humor, second chances, curvy heroine, mother daughter relationship, friendships and more. This is an open door romance with some trigger warnings you should check out.

Blurb: A Kiss to Wake book 1 in the Marda Loop Mysteries series.

You never forget the one that got away…
Louise Dubois was tired of hiding.

Funny story they eat a dill pickle pizza which I’ve never heard of until today, where a local pizza place had it!

QOTD⁉️ what’s your favorite pizza topping?

A serial killer + romance? Immediately yes.

A Kiss to Wake mixes the sweet innocence of a Hallmark movie with the suspense and mystery of Dateline and finishes with a dash of spice, which sounds like an odd pairing, but it works well together. It’s a bit like a steamy game of Clue with a mixture of feel good emotions, romance, and murder.

Mimi Gunn did a wonderful job creating a cozy atmosphere that lulls readers into a false sense of security while simultaneously stringing together a web of chill-inducing mystery, easily balancing a fun, interconnected community set in Marda Loop and a great group of gal pals with a terrifying, stalking criminal who preys on women in said community. I enjoyed the dynamic between Louise, the FMC, and her supporting ladies - her mother, Georgie, and her two best friends, Anika and Simone. After surviving a brutal attack, all 3 women rallied behind Louise to help her heal, rediscover her confidence and spark, and encourage her to live again. The side characters within the Marda Loop community, like Myrna, also played supporting roles in Louise’s healing journey. That kind of support system warms the heart. Gunn’s take on a serial killer was also intriguing, as it blends the timeless suspense of a creepy stalker and murderer with the modern world of technology, creating a sly, clever perp who uses dating apps to prey on his victims. The utilization of dating apps in the story made it feel all the more real, considering how many people use them today in real life. A Kiss to Wake also includes a second-chance romance that made me giggle and roll my eyes, but I’ll leave that a mystery for you to uncover while you read. 😉

A Kiss to Wake has a little bit of everything for everyone with its wholesome holiday scenes, romance that will make you smile, and crimes that will give you the heebie-jeebies. Go read it!

Favorite quote by Louise: “I’m not your dream. I’m your nightmare”

I am a huge fan of crime shows. That said, I honestly felt like it was an episode of Criminal Minds or Dateline. I was drawn to the story from the beginning. Louise, after going through a traumatic experience, she decided that she was tired of being stuck in the same place and decided to move on but as different situations arise she ends up reliving the past. Gregory, who's Louise's ex from a few years back is now the detective in charge of the investigation. Not going to lie, Gregory got on my nerves at some point in the book but I am glad he redeemed himself lol. This book is really good. If you love a good crime show story with romance thrown in there as well, this is it ❤️

Thank you to Mimi Gunn & to Sunnybabepr for providing me with an ARC read 💕

My first mystery romance in the books. I really did enjoy the story and found myself loving the romance at points between the two main characters. There was time with Gregory I wanted to smack him upside the head with how he was treating Louise.

In the end it was a very enjoyable book and I had times I was thinking about the murder! I had theories and was wrong but man was I surprised when we found out.

I can't wait for the next one. Mimi really got me into the Mystery genre and I'm intrigued to get into more!

What a great romantic suspense!! I love the small town feeling, how everyone came together to support Louise after a traumatic event occurred to her. Gregory, her ex from university, is the lead in the investigation of her case. As they work closely together, old feelings start to resurface. There was so much tension and chemistry, I love it!

I love the Bachelor reference at the end! Everything wrapped up so nicely. I can't wait for the second book!

If you enjoy Catherine Cowles' romantic suspense books, you'll love A Kiss to Wake!

This was an interesting read. I really liked the FMC and the message about her rediscovering herself and not being defined by the attack against her—that’s an important theme. The creepy mystery vibes were definitely present, especially with the serial killer aspect. However, I struggled with the romance. It felt overly cutesy, with sweet sayings, which didn’t align with the mystery tone for me. Overall it was okay.

Tropes:
Second chance
Cozy mystery vibes
Curvy heroines
Serial killers
3rd pov
Spicy

The theme of this story drew me in and I really wanted to like this one, unfortunately I wasn't able to connect with the story-telling (I believe the 3rd POV as contributed to this) and found myself skimming the book just to get to the end to find out the answer to the mystery of the story.

Even though the story was under 300 pages for some reason it felt like it dragged, because of the themes, I felt like there should've been more action and more details with the cases about the mystery killer, which we got towards the end once everything came to light but even that felt anti-climactic

Book Quotes:
“I just want to love you.”

It was time to start looking at that woman in the mirror with more love and respect for all that she had overcome. And what she was going to accomplish.

Ahhh yikes I did not enjoy this. I felt like the character development was really one-dimensional and character actions did not make sense ie. going on a blind date from an app when that’s how your attacker meets his victims??? the romance was so cheesy, I just couldn’t. The final bachelor rose moment, I think I puked. Gregory’s whole personality was “cop”. This just wasn’t for me. And one final gripe, although I could list many more, why is Louise referring to her mom with her first name all the time?
The Calgary references were fun and maybe I’ll try some new restaurants after this.

Great read ! Different genre for me. I have never read a murder mystery / romance in one, and I enjoyed it a lot. From page 1 this book has me sucked in and I kept wanting to read more. I started and finished very quickly.

Louise , the FMC is a strong, funny and outgoing person but after her tragic past she has found herself in fear.. she is brave and tries to regain her life by letting her past stay in the past and trying to let the person responsible for her fear control and take over her life. She has support from her two best friends and mom who are trying to help her regain her life back. That is until her ex boyfriend , now detective returns .. Gregory the MMC is protective , “touch her and die” , caring teddy bear.. all he wants is to solve the current case and maybe something else …. ;)

I was expecting this book to have many clues on who the possible suspect could be but after a few guesses and a character that kept me saying hmmm… I was wrong. It was an unpredictable but also predictable as it got further into the book, not the result I was hoping for but also not a bad thing.

My opinion and feedback, There were also moments that I felt were repetitive throughout the book example: Louise wanting to get out of her fear and Gregory listening to his brain over his heart. I also was hoping there would be more information of the suspect’s “why” and “how” I feel like it needed more explaining.

Overall I enjoyed this book I think it is a great read and debut novel! It kept me engaged as a reader and the overall story was great. I am excited to read the second book :) As a fellow Canadian I enjoyed the setting of this book played on in my country !

Thank you Mimi and Sunny Babe PR for the ARC!

As a French-Canadian born in the Ottawa area, I’m thrilled to support another Canadian author. Mimi Gunn brings a unique perspective as an Ottawa-born French-Canadian now living in Calgary, Alberta. Plot 4/5
Characters 3.75/5
Ending 3.75/5

Overall 3.75/5

-I really loved the fact that this book included a mystery plot to the second chance romance which was kind of the main idea of this book. The case in this boo was so intriguing but also so deep and important that it really made me like the book. I think it was the strongest point. There were a few aspects which didn’t really make sense or could have been improved but overall I enjoyed the mystery aspect.

-The two main characters were really sweet. I loved their romance and loved how they made each other soft and each had sweet spots for one another. I did dislike however Gregory breaking Louise’s heart on multiforme occasions even though she seems like the sweetest. Something else I didn’t like was Simone. She may pass as a good friend but I found her quite pushy and not that great a friend to Louise. Louise sometimes felt visibly uncomfortable in certain situations or she would say that she doesn’t want to do something but it felt like Simone kind of forced her to do things that made her uncomfortable. So yeah, she didn’t feel as if she was a good friend.

-I was expecting the ending to go out with a bigger bang. I knew that something was bound to happen to Louise but I was expecting bigger and better. I’m sure that if I were the characters it wouldn’t be easy, but as reader, it felt easy and that the case was tied with a neat little bow. And Louise forgave Gregory was too fast for my liking but they were cute together so I’m willing to forgive that.

I couldn’t put this book down it had me on the edge of my seat. A little warning it does deal with some pretty heavy stuff so please make sure to read trigger warnings before diving into this one.

I loved the way this book plays out there is a lot of mystery and I was trying to solve the case. I got really emotionally attached to the characters and my anxiety was through the roof in a lot of these chapters! I like that Mimi highlighted how people respond to trauma instead of when some books just instantly make the character get over trauma and there’s no effort to show the struggles you have afterwards. I really like that it played out in a way where you could actually see the struggle she had and how she overcame them.

I really liked the romance aspect of this story I just wish there was more of it, as in more of their love forming so I could get more attached to their bond. Other than that I am also a sucker for an old love coming back, so this romance was a vibe I did enjoy! I like how her friends were super supportive while still trying to help her out of her comfort zone. I highly recommend you check out this book and if you do let me know what you think! Can’t wait for the next one! Thank you SunnyBabePR for this ARC! I loved it!

Detective Gregory is perusing cold files when he happens upon a picture of someone from his past. Louise was the girlfriend from university who might just have been “the one” and now it looks like she might be connected with a current murder case he is perusing. They never caught the perp who attacked her. Even after the physical wounds were healed, Louise is still suffering from the psychological ones. When she and Gregory reconnect, their past baggage and present connection might be the cure for which she has been longing. But that baggage is very painful and when history repeats itself, it threatens to pull Louise back under.

But the Louise today is far different from the old Louise and she is willing to be brave. When she decides to join a dating app, I feared we would have another heroine who should be nominated for the Darwin Award. I was delighted to be proven wrong. I don’t want to provide any spoilers but any apprehension I might have had was turned on its head in a very satisfying way. By the end of the book Louise was no longer victim but was fearless. I am not sure just how the story will continue. Even though the search for a serial killer was the mystery to be solved in this one, the book was far more a romance than either suspense or mystery. We shall see. Four purrs and one paw up.

Louise the FMC is a woman grappling with the trauma of a sexual assault in her own home, which remains unsolved after three long years. The fear and anxiety from that fateful night still haunt her, making her life one of constant unease. But when a suspicious murder occurs near her neighborhood, everything changes. Gregory the MMC, is Louise’s college ex and the lead detective on the case, steps in to investigate. He quickly realizes eerie similarities between the new case and Louise’s cold case.

Balancing old feelings, unresolved tensions, and growing affection, Gregory and Louise must work together to solve the mystery. But with a ruthless and meticulous criminal on the loose, will they be able to catch him before he strikes again?

This cozy mystery is a perfect October read! While it’s a bit predictable, the suspense and emotional journey make it an enjoyable story. I especially appreciated Louise’s portrayal—her struggle to move past trauma is both heart-wrenching and deeply relatable. If you’re looking for a mystery with emotional depth, this one’s for you!

Thank you to @sunnybabepr and @mimigunnbooks for sending me this book for the opportunity to review it!

Mimi Gunn has crafted a breathtaking blend of romance and mystery that grips you right from the start. The way everything is set up is simply fantastic—it’s clear that every detail has been carefully considered to draw the reader into a world of intrigue and passion. The tension between the main characters feels organic, and the romance is beautifully intertwined with the unfolding mystery, making it impossible to put down.

The pace of the story is spot on. Gunn keeps you on the edge of your seat as the mystery deepens, balancing the excitement of discovery with the softer, more emotional beats of the romance. The chemistry between the leads? CHEF’S KISS 😮‍💨! Their dynamic is everything you could hope for—electric, heartfelt, and just the right amount of tension to keep you hooked.

The twists and turns throughout the plot are masterfully done, leaving just enough breadcrumbs to keep you guessing, but not enough to spoil the big reveals. Gunn's ability to mix steamy romance with thrilling suspense is truly impressive, and it leaves you eagerly anticipating what’s coming next.

I genuinely cannot wait for book two and to see what mystery awaits us there. 🤩

Trigger Warnings: Open door sexual content, descriptions of assault by the victim, murder scenes.

This fun but predictable story had some curves you would never expect. Louise and Gregory were dating at university only to have Gregory end the relationship suddenly and unexpectedly one evening. Years later Louise is working as a law librarian in a prestigious law firm in downtown Calgary, when she is attacked and barely survives. Two years later, another woman is attacked and killed by what appears to Gregory as the same perpetrator. Thus Louise and Gregory are reunited in this case. Louise remains in danger because she can identify the attacker. There is great sexual energy between the two but, Gregory cannot start a relationship with a potential witness. Can Gregory maintain a professional relationship with Louise? Can Louise remember more of her attack to help solve this case? What becomes of these star crossed lovers?

This book is the first for the author Mimi Gunn and it is a good one. I would give it a 3.5 ⭐️ rating overall with a 2.5 rating for spice. I recommend this book to those who are willing to give a new author a chance. I feel she has a good book and her writing skills will improve as she writes.
