The author paints a very detailed picture of a bleak world, with obliteration, mutilation and annihilation of whole civilisations, races and religions. Sexual degradation and humiliation runs throughout the narrative, as does enforced programming supported by debasement and chemical influence.
The author writes comprehensive descriptive text to paint a picture of peoples, environments, behaviours, violence, desecration and cannibalism. Cults, subversive iconography and slogans, corruption, greed, fear - a purposely exaggerated picture of what could occur, with just enough of a parallel to what is apparent in today’s known world to incite a shudder of concern.
Amidst this elaborate and macabre background, the main protagonist Prescott Black and his motley crew overcome challenges and assaults on their bodies and their senses to reach their immediate goal. As they progress, a little more is revealed about Prescott and some of his companions; bonds within the disparate group are forged. The book ends with the reemergence of an earlier character, who has made brief appearances throughout the book and poses further questions about Prescott’s future.
