I was a bit nervous to delve into this one because of the reviews regarding the main character. I went into it knowing that the author wrote the character this way for a reason.
The story is absolutely fantastic and I found that it was one of those rare books that I simply couldn't wait to get back to. I just had to know what was going to happen next.
To those who could not quite get into it because of the ill-mannered nature of the main character, I'd say try it again. There is a reason he is like that. Not an excuse, but a reason.
Absolutely wonderful twist at the end that I had no clue was coming. Towards the end I found myself having to re-read a sentence here and there just to make sure I was following along. It can get a little confusing if one isn't paying attention.
All in all, it's a great story and one I would definitely like to see added to with more books.
Full disclosure--I know Burnette from prior to ever reading his book.
The main character is a terrible person. Many of the events in the beginning of the book emphasis this. I was initially skeptical that this character could have a believable character arc where he changes into person who isn't deplorable, but the main character's arc is one of the biggest triumphs of this book.
The narration follows the actions and emotions of the main character, which reinforces the theme that he is a terrible egocentric. The action flows well and holds a very good balance between description and forwarding the action. I was genuinely surprised by some of the plot points and the emotional sequences of the main character helped drive home the "so what" of these events. There is a lot of corruption, violence, drug use, prostitution, etc. but it all effectively paints the dirty reality of New Seattle City.
This is a quick read, a great first novel and worth the price.
