Great, great book. Read it, please! It shows how so many of the race-based policies of the last half century have been an utter disaster. So many statistics show great gains in black social statistics from the post-Great War era up until the Great Society era. Then they plateaued--except for the ones that fell.
While not on the level of slavery itself, this is nevertheless one of the great tragedies of American history. Affirmative action is at or near the heart of it, but Riley goes into other areas of policy as well. By not treating people in a colorblind way, we are disadvantaging them--seeing them not as individuals. We are mismatching people or, if in fact qualified, casting everything they do in a questioning light.
It is wrong, but I don't know how soon it's going to stop. It feels like I rely on the supreme court for nearly everything these days; hopefully this is another area in which they keep up their good work.
