greta gerwig, my queen!!!!!!! greta gerwig, our savior!!!!!!!

i'm so glad this book exists and that at least someone is writing about the incredible, revolutionary work greta is doing in film. although this felt like a skimmable, coffee-table-style book, it contained a lot of in-depth analysis of her work, movies, and life. great research and summation of events by the author. although it looked like an easy read (and was), it went much deeper than that, and the author's personal interest in the subject matter was evident-- which i love to see in nonfiction.

i learned a looooot that i didn't previously know about greta's early acting and writing life, as well as more about her 3 big directorial films. i enjoyed that the author spent a great deal of time on 'barbie', considering it was what thrust her out of the indie film realm and into the household name scene.

in the future i would love to read a more narrative-style book about her life or one day (hopefully) a book by greta herself!

Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

"If I have any virtues, it’s that I’m good at walking through doors that are slightly ajar.”

There is no all-encompassing, heavily researched, essay-filled volume of Greta Gerwig's career since she is still early in her directorial filmography, so for now we will make do with informal photography books containing snippets from previous interviews. This is not the worst "unofficial" biography of a celebrity, and is fairly written, well-paced, and moderate in length. The photos are high-quality, there is nothing outside appropriate topics of a public figure, such as gossip about their personal life or parasocial belonging from the writer slipping in. Helpful if you know little to nothing about Greta Gerwig and are trying to "catch up" before future projects.

A perfectly fine biography of one of the defining talents of today's cinema. There's no real effort at in-depth analysis, and certainly nothing closely resembling criticism. But Gerwig always comes across as a likable person, and that makes this worth a look.
