Rescue at the Reef: The Miraculous True Story of a Little Boy with Big Faith

Rate this book
A shark attack. Unexpected, uncontrollable, unpredictable.

In that moment, the Reeders had no way to be prepared, no plan for what to do next—and no way of knowing that an extraordinary journey lay ahead.

A two-week vacation to the Florida Keys meant Mary and Jameson Sr. could share the beauty of their favorite turquoise-blue waters with their four children. On that serene day at Looe Key Reef, after they finished lunch on the boat, their oldest, ten-year-old Jameson Jr., was swimming among the marine life, capturing breathtaking footage of a sea turtle.
Until a massive bull shark attacked.
Nine miles from shore and even farther from a hospital, their son weakening after the shark had ripped skin, muscle, and bone from his leg, the Reeders prayed for help—and it came through a miraculous chain of events.
Rescue at the Reef is the true story of a young boy who defied death with an unshakable faith in the power of Jesus to save him. Even in immense suffering, he focused on caring for those around him so much that it surprised even hospital staff. His unshakeable peace made an impact on patients and visitors, and his story quickly spread, drawing the attention of strangers and the media.
With reflections on faith, suffering, and the hidden gifts that often go unnoticed, Rescue at the Reef is a living reminder that with God, even the most fearsome challenges can be faced—and conquered. This unforgettable story will leave you on the edge of your seat, inspired by the ripple effects of hope that overcome impossible odds.

‚You have a greater chance of being struck by lightning five different times than being attacked by a shark once. On top of that, there hadn't been a shark attack at Loo Key Reef in recorded history, that is, until Jameson's.‘ (S.11)

‚I had been worried that my son might lose his life. Then I'd been worried that Jameson would lose his leg, but in this moment I realized he had already lost it.‘ (S.28)

‚About two million Americans live with limb loss, and about 185,000 people a year have to have an amputation. While children are often more adaptable to the change emotionally, they can struggle more with the change in their body image, especially in relationship to other kids.‘ (S.59)

‚I’m thinking about how to face my own fear, and at some point I'll need to help the kids face their fear about getting back into this beautiful water that we love so much.‘ (S.78)

What a beautiful story of courage and determination in the face of tragedy.

I am grateful I could hear Jameson's story told through his parents. I appreciated their perspective and their family's reliance on God to get them through.

One caveat: the book became repetitive at times and sometimes seemed to veer off topic, on a tangent, and then there was an abrupt change of direction that didn't make sense. The time line of events isn't followed, so it was a bit disorienting at times. The book could have been much shorter and still have had a powerful impact.

In spite of these things, I still felt the book to be a very valuable contribution to stories of faith, hope, and perseverance.

Jameson Jr’s story of perseverance, faith, and perspective is inspiring and full of hope. While what he and his parents went thru was horrific, they are a testimony that God can use the worst situations for good, and a a hopeful outlook and determination makes so much difference in the outcome. I look forward to hearing about what Jameson grows up to be and do with such an incredible faith and trajectory.

I appreciated much of the practical and down to earth parts of Jameson Sr and Mary’s struggles to parent as you watch your child suffer and struggle with something beyond their control. They handled well the concept of trauma-induced fear and not forcing the overcoming of it but not idling in the fear either. It was relatable and encouraging.

For the writing, the story is narrated from the perspective of both parents, Jameson Sr and Mary Reeder, as authors, volleying back and forth on their experiences or thoughts. After the initial part of the accident, the majority of the book reads much like an interview of the two of them.

I did find some of the book to be a bit repetitive and other parts were somewhat irrelevant, such as the sections on how the Reeders met and got married or Jameson Sr’s childhood. It wasn’t really pertinent to the son’s story and felt a little like we veered off from the overall intention and focus of the book there.

Overall I enjoyed reading of the Reeder family’s story and will be praying for the continued journey. It was inspiring and I’m glad to have known it.

Thanks to Worthy Publishing and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are mine.

Thank you to Worthy Publishing and #netgalley for the ARC of this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.

The story told in this book was absolutely astounding. I couldn’t put it down. The most powerful parts of this book was toward the end when the family talks about their faith during this tragedy. I wish these snippets could have been incorporated more throughout the book. This story is a witness of faith that despite tragic circumstances God never abandons us and will pull us through.

Powerful, moving, and a true testament to the power of God.

I love reading about what God is doing in other people’s lives! Jameson Junior’s story has already impacted so many people, and I think this book will get his story out to many others and will encourage their faith in Christ. Reading Jameson’s story made me scared of sharks, so I’m amazed that he was so strong to want to get back in the water of the shark attack, while sharks were there!! God is definitely using Jameson and his family to share the gospel and advance his kingdom.

This book just happened to be one of those books that changed my outlook on life forever. This book is not only heartwarming but soul touching.

Rescue at the reef tells a true story of a ten-year-old boy's experience with a shark attack. What truly makes this story so special is the courage this child has and his faith with God. Another aspect that I loved was that it was told by his parents and they really put their all into writing this book.

If you loved Soul Surfer and Bethany Hamilton's story or just need a heartwarming book this is the book for you! I am so excited for it to come out and touch everyone and their hearts with this inspiration tale.

I would overall rate this a five star and I will definitely be recommending this to the people in my life!

This was a powerful and impactful read. The incredible miracles that occurred paired with the bravery of everyone had me crying in the second chapter. There are so many unknowns when it comes to this life here on earth and we may never find out why certain things happen, but this story was just another example of why trusting and praising God in the midst of the uncertainties is what faith is all about.

It took me a little while to adjust to how each POV was written and there would be times where I would have to go back and see who was speaking. Other than that, this was a great read.

Thanks to the publisher for an advanced reader copy of this amazing book. Such a powerful story of how God showed up and worked through this boy and his family after a horrific shark attack. I appreciated the alternate POVs of the mother and father and the wisdom they shared, and especially at the end of the book. As a mother myself, I will carry that with me through struggles and difficult times. This is a book that will be an inspiration for many.

Jameson and his family swam at Looe Key Reef before, the underwater world full of adventure to be seen. Ten-year-old Jameson was following a sea turtle when he was attacked by a “massive” bull shark. When Mary, Jameson mother heard the screaming she knew it was very serious. Nine miles off shore Jameson is raced to shore before it is too late.

What an amazing true story of love, perseverance , and courage. A ten year old boys suffers an enormous life changing event and yet he never loses site of his faith, his hope, or his outlook on life. Jameson’s story sends a powerful message to us all to never lose yourself and it’s only you that holds you back.

I enjoyed this book and its message. It made me think and re evaluate some of my own perspectives on life. I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because there were more than a handful of typos in the text. Great story to read though

My thoughts are my own, I would like to thank Worthy Publishing and NetGalley for my eARC of this book in an exchange for an honest review.

First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley and Worthy Publishing for an ARC of this book. my review and opinion of what I read are my own.

This book tells the story of Jameson Reeder, Jr, told by his parents. Jameson was attacked by a bullhead shark in August 13, 2022. Jameson and his family have a strong faith in Jesus and Christianity. Through the telling of Jameson's story, Jameson Sr and Mary really portray an excellent portrayal of their faith and how their belief helped their son and family overcome the shark attack.

I loved the pace and straight forward telling of Rescue at the Reef. Jameson Sr and Mary mention how their faith in Jesus and being Christian played a role in what happened, but this story can be read comfortably for anyone of any faith. I love how they share Jesus's love without forcing their views on the readers.

I love how strong and faithful Jameson Jr is. He was so brave to get through his trauma. He doesn't let his amputated leg get him down, and still plays baseball and does everything a normal kid does. He has such a big heart! I love how he isn't afraid to share his story or faith with anyone.

I think this story can be read by anyone of any age. It's a great book about survival and overcoming your fears and getting back out there.

Remarkable story of tragedy, rescue, family, and faith in a loving God. Also, an example from a young boy of who recognizes this life isn't just about him. He's here in this world and in this life to make a difference in the lives he comes in contact with. Even minutes and hours after a shark attack. Great read, page turner.

This book made me cry.

The millisecond I saw the cover of this book and read the description, I knew I would love it. After preordering, there was much waiting and waiting for its arrival on my doorstep.

After the tragic events of a shark attack, Jameson Jr. loses his leg and his whole way of life is turned upside down. But through the kindness of their community, strangers, and doctors, the family was able to overcome the challenges around them.

I love seeing this family mention the miracles and “coincidences” that happened their way during that time; they believed God was with them in every moment. There’s so much prayer here, I love it, what a beautiful story; what a great book this is.

Lovely cover, good editing, nice and short chapters. The pacing is like going down a water slide, fast but enjoyable. I swam through this book in about three days. The parents are cool people who were brave enough to share their experiences to inspire and help others. There is some quality disability education and information in here as well. The mini “how they met” story by the parents was cute, and a welcome addition. Those parts of the narrative didn’t overstay, which was nice. A tropical book perfect for the summer time.

Some small critique is that there’s some information here that is repeated a few times, and it could have been more concise and streamlined.

I also wish there wasn’t so much emphasis placed on Jameson Jr. being a super special kid. I understand that everyone around him was touched by his story, giving nature, and shining positivity in the midst of tragedy—but I think there’s a better way to communicate that. Perhaps to not use the “he is one special kid,” language (which appears a lot throughout this book), because that feels a bit cliché. Even if he is indeed a unique and life-changing individual, that language is overused.

Every parent sees their children as special, and that makes sense but it does retract from the reading experience. I think it might be the phrasing, because the language feels awkward for some reason.

Overall, heartwarming. Blessings to the family who kept soldiering and swimming through all the waves that smacked their way.

Rescue at the Reef is a powerful and emotional true story that hooked me right from the start—I was so moved that it had me in tears within the first few chapters. The story of survival, family, and faith left a real impression on me.

I’m not a religious person, but I appreciated how the book handled faith. It wasn’t overbearing, but it did make me reflect and even feel a little more open to the idea of spirituality in hard times.

That said, I was hoping for a deeper emotional dive. While the story is compelling, it often felt surface-level, especially when it came to the child’s emotions revolving around the shark bite incident. One major disappointment was that the person the book revolves around didn’t get a single chapter from their own point of view—it felt like a missed opportunity to let the reader connect with him directly. I kept waiting for more insight into what he was thinking or feeling in the aftermath (not told from the parents POV), but it stayed mostly on the outside looking in. It also got a little repetitive at times, which pulled me out of the moment here and there.

Overall, this is a touching and inspiring read. I just wish it had gone a bit deeper and offered more personal perspective.

5⭐️-Inspirational and Miraculous!

I love books that leave me feeling uplifted and inspired! Which are not words I would associate with a story about a shark attack. Reading the Reeder family’s account made my mama heart drop and fill with emotion as I imagined what that horrific experience must have been like.

But it was also amazing to read about all the tender mercies and miracles that followed. The book is full of faith and testimony with the resounding idea that God not only helps us through pain, but if we allow Him, he can make good come from it as well.

The story not only recalls the shark attack, but also the recovery of young 10-year old Jameson. All I can say is that he is one amazing little boy with equally amazing parents. ❤️💪

•Profanity: None

“Hold on to your loved ones and trust that God will hold on to you.”

This is going to be the next Heaven Is for Real story!! The first few chapters sharing the story and faith of the family were honestly so moving and made for such an emotional read. I also loved the “Spiritual Reflections” feature at the end book that goes into more detail about the authors wanting their story to be geared towards individuals of all faiths and backgrounds and why they withheld many stories regarding their own faith (these stories follow this section for those that do want to read them). Truly an amazing story and family, highly recommend!

The events in this book took place in 2022 while the Reeders were on vacation in Florida with their four young children. The Reeder’s son, Jameson Jr., was only 10 years old at the time. What was supposed to be a pleasant, enjoyable day at Looe Key Reef turned into every parent’s worst nightmare.

In waters where no shark had ever been seen Jameson Jr. was violently and viciously attacked by a massive Bull shark.

The book was written from the point of view of both parents. Each one recounted their thoughts and feelings and shared their perspective. I read this aloud with my four children. When we got to the section with the attack it was very emotional. My youngest is 10 years old and just thinking about him being attacked like that brought tears to my eyes.

I appreciated that despite the terrible circumstances the Reeders found themselves in they never lost their faith and trust in God. They acknowledged His hand leading in every step of the way. After the attack happened there were people placed in just the right places at just the right time to help save Jameson Jr.’s life.

I appreciated that the Reeders were very honest as they shared all that transpired and how through the worst time in their life God never left them. I learned a lot from them about experiencing difficulties, remaining faithful to the Lord, and facing fears with God’s help. Swipe through the pictures to read some of my favorite quotes from the book.

Such a captivating memoir from two faithful parents.
Rescue at the Reef is the true story of Jameson Reeder Jr. He was attacked by a bull shark in 2022. His parents retell the events from their perspectives. Jameson trusted in God throughout this awful nightmare, and had a profound effect on those around him. I highly recommend reading this book. Be warned as a cryer, I had copious amounts of tears in the beginning.

First of all, beautiful story, tears were shed for sure. I loved getting to know the Reeder family throughout this emotional read.
I will say though it was a pretty confusing read. Without much rhyme, reason, or context we were thrown around the story’s timeline. There was even a section right in the middle that randomly jumped to Mr and Mrs Reeders love story.
I felt like all the information was pertinent and added to the story, it just felt a little like whiplash when you went back and forth without warning. It also contributed to a fair amount of unnecessary repetition of information.
I did honestly enjoy this book though! It is a powerful reminder about how big God really is, and he will always be with you. Through thick and thin. We may not all have a story quite as crazy as this, but he’s with you in things as big as a shark bite, and as small as nudging you in the right direction!

My first ARC audio- & truly an emotional read about ten year old Jameson Jr's journey after a bull shark attack in the Florida Keys. Told from his parents perspective, this book shows the power of faith, family, and community in the aftermath of an unexpected tragedy.
I was overcome with admiration for a young child to have a such positive attitude in his recovery, even while dealing with immense pain. He had determination to continue his everyday life and not let an accident define him. It truly gave a vivid description of how his parents and family felt, processed, and handled the unthinkable, while dealing with the growing attention from media and the community. Although, told with their faith in mind - it was not overpowering. Thinking about this little boy and all the things he's endured and still has to overcome!

Rescue at the Reef by Jameson Reeder and Mary Catherine Reeder is a true recollection of a horrible event that happened to their son. As with any life altering event, questions are raised of what could have been done differently, or if only. However, we know we cannot go back and change the past but can only move forward. This story is reminiscent of an event occurring near me in the Gulf off the coast of Florida in 2024 when an Alabama teen Lulu Gribbin was attacked and almost lost her life. A very moving story.

“Rescue at the Reef” is a powerful and gripping testimony of faith and perseverance.

While it was definitely an emotional read with everything Jameson Jr. and his family went through, I also found myself in awe of all the miracles that took place following the tragedy. What really stood out to me was Jameson’s bravery and the strength he (and his family) found in Jesus. Truly a testament of how Jesus can take the most nightmarish situations devised by the enemy and use it for good.

I also enjoyed getting to read the story from both parent’s perspectives (it alternates throughout). Though this did lead to some overlap in information, I loved how it highlighted their different thoughts and reactions to what they experienced.

Wow! This was an amazing book about a small boy's faith and courage! No one expects a shark attack in a safe area, especially as it had never happened there before. It was a nightmare for the family when the incident happened, however, as the authors later recall, help was immediate, as random strangers went out of their way to provide first aid and support them during those first few horrible hours. It is inspiring to see the little boy's faith pulling them along, as he talks about seeing Jesus and sings a worship song even though he had already lost a lot of blood.
The authors talk a lot about the practical problems they faced during their hospital stay, keeping Jameson occupied and handling the media and curious people. There is also a bit about how the authors met and such.
I am truly surprised to read about such calm acceptance of the situation in Jameson Jr. In the last few chapters, they talk about how he gets back on his feet using the prosthetic leg and does not let anything stop him, even going back to the very place where he was attacked, as he wanted to get over his fear. Both the authors did an great job narrating the story from their points of view.
Its a book filled with encouragement on facing one's fears. A truly wonderful testimony! Prayers for the family.

Rescue at the Reef is an incredible story of the Reeder family's faith, resilience, and drive to persevere in the face of unimaginable difficulty. It was truly incredible to hear how God put all the right pieces into place to save Jameson's life, and how He used the story of their experience to reach so many other people. It's a beautiful illustration of how God use all things for our good and His glory!

I really enjoyed the dual narrator style of the book. The reader alternates hearing from Mary and Jameson Sr, and it really feels like you're sitting down with them to hear their story over coffee. They didn't spend a lot of time on extraneous background information or drag things out, it was succinct and to the point. As a result, every chapter of this book is very impactful and I really just tore through the pages.

I've really been enjoying all the memoirs I've been reading this year, and this one has been one of the best ones yet!

Many thanks to Worthy Publishing and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are mine.
