I wanted to love this. I really did.

The setting? Magical academy. Underdog MC. That’s literally my weakness. I came in ready to scream, cry, and emotionally attach myself to fictional men.

But I’m going to be brutally honest, I still don’t understand Will. At all.

I don’t need to agree with a character’s decisions. I just need to understand the reasoning behind them. But Will’s reasoning? It feels weak. Forced, even. His entire motivation feels like the author panicked and went, “uh… he needs to join… just make something up.” Yeah. Sure. Totally convincing. Groundbreaking. Truly. Nobel Prize in narrative gymnastics.

And Will, did you know there were a hundred better ways to handle it. Why not just deal with Julius quietly? A dark alley exists for a reason. You’re telling me the only solution was to publicly flex in front of a massive crowd? Really? A dark alley was right there. Quiet. Efficient. No audience. Problem solved. But nooo, let’s go for maximum exposure instead. Bro, make it make sense.

And then there’s that guy...what’s his name again? The one who keeps insulting Will, the professional Will hater, but can be labeled as Mr.Notice-Me-Will, whatever his name. I genuinely don’t understand his motivation. If he truly thinks Will is beneath him, why does he care so much about being "seen" by Will? Why crave acknowledgment from someone you supposedly look down on? Why are you so desperate for Will attention? What is this? Validation-seeking behavior 101? Because when he is shouting for Will’s attention it looks more like a confession scene in a romance anime.

If Will is truly beneath you, then ignore him. And if he actually matters, just admit it. Because this half-and-half behavior, looking down on him while desperately craving his acknowledgment like your life depends on it, isn't a rivalry. It's an obsession. At this point, you’re not a rival, you’re just walking insecurity with a superiority complex.

And let’s be real for a second, you can hate someone AND acknowledge they’re stronger than you AND want to surpass them. That’s literally how rivals work! But nooo, instead you’re out here acting like he’s nothing while lowkey spiraling every time he breathes in your vicinity. Be serious. This is not pride. This is emotional confusion with a dramatic flair.

I’m really curious what the benefit you’ll get from his acknowledgment? What are you gaining from that?

It just feels contradictory. If Will isn’t someone you respect, then why seek his recognition? You look down on him, but you also want acknowledgement from him? Pick a struggle. Either he’s irrelevant, or he matters. You don’t get to act superior while also craving his validation like it’s oxygen. It’s giving tsundere, but without the charm, just pure secondhand embarrassment.

I don’t actually hate the character, but… come on. We get this weird obsession where he’s basically begging for recognition from someone he supposedly doesn’t respect. For what? Pride? Ego? Or is it just plot convenience, bruh.

And the worst part, I should be screaming, crying, throwing up over this dynamic. This should’ve been my toxic favorite. My “they’re messy but I love them” duo. But, I can’t even enjoy the drama, because I’m too busy questioning the logic every five seconds.

Like please… give me an obsession that makes sense. Give me choices that hurt but feel real.

Maybe I’ll calm down later and reread this review like, “wow, I was dramatic.”

But that’s for another time. Right now, I’m just… tired of this.

Le personnage de Will me plaît énormément.

The Harry Potter parallels are unmistakable, yet they don't detract from my enjoyment in the slightest. The narrative unfolds at a brisk pace. The combat sequences are skillfully illustrated. Certain incantations are lengthy and appear to promise irreversible outcomes, but this isn't so. The panels are breathtaking.

More clichéd elitist antagonists

More hostile elitist tropes. Rather than disliking annoying and unlikable characters, I found myself disliking the author for making me sit through dull, annoying, unlikable characters.

Grand Magic Festival. Major discrimination and racism against non-magic users. Interesting combat and magic scenes. Spells have great wording.

Will takes a shift at one of his jobs, but several class bullies come in to harass him and his customers. He stands up for his patrons, who have no hope to stand up for themselves, which leads to Will being challenged to enter into a large-scale tournament he had very little hope of winning. The following day, Will, Colette, and a third classmate (through coercion) are teamed up and set off into a maze of magical traps and beasts against teams of their classmates to see who can overcome everything, and possibly catch the eye of the scouts from the Magia Vander.

We're still getting Harry Potter vibes off this volume, only now we're on to the Tri Wizard Tournament. This volume also comes complete with bullies going after our lovable hero who is not as talented as those around him. Colette is shaping up to be one of my favorites and definitely gives off Hermione vibes with how quick-witted she is. The artwork around the spell-casting is beautiful and fantastical!
