Arch Through Time #26

Journey of a Highlander

Rate this book
Between the past and the future lies a love worth risking everything.

Cautious and methodical, Isabelle Ross has always preferred the safety of well-laid plans and predictable routines. Life has taught her that the best way to avoid heartache is to play it safe, and she’s followed that rule to the letter. But when an unexpected twist of fate hurls her into medieval Scotland, Isabelle’s carefully constructed world is thrown into chaos.

Magnus Kerr is a Highlander haunted by the mistakes of his past. Driven by a relentless need for redemption, he has devoted his life to righting the wrongs he once committed. But when Isabelle, a mysterious woman from the future, appears in his path, her quiet strength and cautious heart challenge everything he thought he knew about himself.

As they traverse the rugged landscapes and face the dangers of the wild Highlands, Isabelle and Magnus find themselves drawn together in ways neither expected. Her cautious nature is both a balm and a challenge to Magnus, who must confront the shadows of his past if he hopes to build a future with her.

In a world where the stakes are high and the heart’s desires are the most dangerous risks of all, Isabelle and Magnus must decide if they can trust each other—and themselves—enough to embrace the love that has the power to heal them both.

Katy Baker was born in London to an English mother and an American father. She grew up a stone's throw from Hampstead Heath which remains one of her favourite places in the world. During her twenties she spent several years living in San Francisco where she developed an abiding love of bagels before returning to her beloved London. She lives in south London with her husband and a very grumpy bulldog.

Katy's books explore the intricacies of human relationships with plenty of spice thrown in. What would life be without a little spice?

Izzy worked in a bank, and walked dogs for an adoption center as a way to unwind. Today she was hiking with Snaffles, a large English Mastiff, when she came across Irene MacAskill searching for her cat Baxter. Izzy and Irene had an unusual and bewildering discussion wherein Irene spoke of overcoming fear, seeing beyond people’s masks and finding her destiny. After Irene left, Snaffles found Baxter sitting under a stone arch, and chased after him with Izzy right on his heels. She was now in an area called Dragon’s Back, but soon found that she was not alone. Magnus Kerr, member of the Order of the Osprey, was trying to track outlaws when he was interrupted by Irene MacAskill who began talking about choices, crossroads, forgiving himself, and the aid of someone who saw through people’s masks. Then just as he found some clues to the criminals’ direction, he was knocked down by a big slobbering dog. Izzy followed, introductions were made and confusion mounted until twenty-first century Izzy finally believed Magnus when he told her that she had traveled back to the fifteenth century. This story is intense! It is full of danger, mixed emotions, misconceptions, self-doubt, self-incrimination, anger, hatred, revenge, altercations, captures and rescues. Magnus has always been one of my favorite characters in this series. It has been clear that there is more to him than meets the eye, and that he is constantly fighting an internal battle. This story fills in all the gaps, and reveals the source of his overwhelming guilt. I’d say that Izzy just blossoms under Magnus’s attention, but blossom is too benign a word. She kicks fear’s butt and powers full steam ahead. Nobody messes with her man or her dog! Snaffles, the most ridiculously named dog, is loyal, fierce and protective….and provides some much needed comic relief. Carve out some time to read this book, because if you put it down, it will haunt you until you pick it back up again. This is a wonderful series, but there is just something special about this particular story!

Journey of a Highlander
Katy Baker
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Isabelle Ross is the kind of lass that has always played it safe. But when a very unexpected twist of fate takes her back in time to medieval Scotland, her safe, predictable world is not very predictable anymore.

Magnus Kerr is a Highlander who is deeply affected by the mistakes of his past. All he wants is to do is fix the wrongs he feels he's inflicted during his life. But when Izzy, a mysterious woman from the future, appears in his path, he finds himself questioning everything he thought her ever knew about himself.

Once again, Katy Baker has managed to bring me a new book boyfriend that's worth his salt. Ms. Baker has taken everything I thought that I could predict and thrown it to the wind. This book was absolutely fantastic. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I was literally floored every step of the way.
Izzy was a proud, cautious woman that reminded me of my younger self. She works in a bank and had a rather predictable life that you or I might have, but once she threw off that cloak of predictability, she was a real firecracker.
Magnus was such a haunted and tormented soul that my heart bled for him. He didn’t have an easy life, but he kept going. It didn't hurt that he had the order behind him. He would need to draw strength from his brother's and Izzy if they were to come out of this alive. Once he realized who he was and who he wasn't, it didn't take long for him to draw that strength. All in all, this was a beautiful time travel that I would highly recommend. Ms. Baker, I can't wait to meet the next characters you dream up for us.

Woman's Best Friend
I absolutely loved this book. And besides Izzy and Magnus, I absolutely love Snaffles. For the first time, a dog "accompanied" a time traveler from the 21st century to the 15th century. And it was the beginning of a fantastic adventure. The plotline moved very quickly from on the time Izzy and Snaffles met Magnus, it was magic.

I was also glad to see characters from previous books made appearances. This series never seems to get old. Instead, the way Katy links previous books storylines to the current stories s similar to reading the histories of of ancestors.

I highly recommend not only this book but the entire series.

I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary and honest.

“Journey of a Highlander” is part of the Arch Through Time series. This is one of my favorite time travel romance series and Katy Baker is one of my favorite authors. Even though this is book 26 in the series, the books never get tired and the stories do not feel recycled. I loved Izzy and Manus’ story, it is a fantastic book with wonderful characters. The story is well written and flows at a great pace. I always enjoy seeing some of the characters from previous books. I absolutely loved this book and recommend not only it but the entire series. I always look forward to more from Katy Baker.

Revenge

Thinking about modern day life and the challenges Izzy had finding meaning and a sense of purpose, it was enjoyable watching her step back time and embrace these things in a new way. Irene really has a way forging connections! Watching Magnus sort out his feelings about his past while dealing with Izzy in his life made for a great story. Irene is so right-the choices we make impact the direction of our life!

Excellent Tine Travel series

I have read every book in this series and am looking forward to next one. Although I have over 600 books on my tablet I will drope what I am reading and read the next in this series when it comes out. I will not go into characters, plots etc. I will let each reader enjoy discovering them for themselves. All I can say is "Great reads"

Isabelle Ross is a back clerk who never takes risks. She is walking with her dog Snaffles when she meets an old lady who talks in riddles. She follows Snaffles through an arch and finds herself in the past – to 1478.

Magnus Kerr is a highlander to is tormented by his past mistakes. He is on a mission to try to redeem himself.

Will Izzy stay and help Magnus catch the outlaws – or will she return to the present as soon as she can?
Will Magnus ever learn to forgive himself for his perceived faults?

This is another good book in this series. Intrigue, action, betrayal, suspence and romance.

I enjoyed this book – as I have in all the previous books in this series.

Absolutely Terrible

Worst of all books in this series. There is no intrigue, no mystery at all, and completely boring. Torture until the end. Very sad to see the author tear down what WAS once an excellent series.
