I already knew the basics of MacArthur (Korea, Phillipines, Japan, Korea) but this filled in a lot of details (especially about his early life) and put thing into context.

Some things I learned:

(1) I did not realize how prominent his family was, with his father a general and grandfather a governor of Wisconsin.

(2) Surprised to learn that he is still revered by many in the Philippines even today. The only American general who is a hero in a foreign country.

(3) He was actually a serious presidential candidate in 1944, 1948 and 1952 because the public loved him. If he had aggressively sought the nomination in any of those years, he would have had a great shot.

This guy led such a colorful life and was involved in so many historical incidents:
-The Bonus march
-Losing and regaining the Philipines
-Surrender of Japan
-Rebuilding Japan
-Korean War
-Threatening to unleash World War III and being dismissed by Truman.

More Details for Early Life Than Other Parts

This was an easy and informative read, but there were too little details on his time in the major parts of WW II, the Korean war and the rebuilding of Japan.

General Douglas MacArthur is famous for his accomplishments in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

I enjoyed the book because not only does it chronicle his life and achievements, we also gain insights into the person.

Cannot recommend

This is one book I cannot recommend. Save your time and money and look elsewhere.
It is poorly written, repetitive, and not sufficiently informative to be worth reading.

A great overview of his life. I feel this book could have been twice as long and still not covered his life.

I thought I knew Douglas MacArthur... I did, but not as well as I do after reading this excellent little biography. Another winner from Hourly History.

Eye opening

This is a eye opening book about a five star general that left his men behind while he escaped. It changes the way I think about him.

This eBook was so well-written that I finished it in one sitting. Before starting this reading, I knew little about this war hero besides Harry Truman firing him. However, this is a fascinating account of MacArthur's life. I was surprised to find he was a "Mama's Boy." He was married twice and had one child, a boy. His history was engaging. He was one of those unique people who were in both world wars.
