Samantha Moon gets in touch with the creature inside of her and takes a trip beyond where she's ever gone before, deep into the revelations of her inner self, and into the black vastness of outer space. She risks everything to discover just how powerful she is, and finally connects with a deeper truth inside of her—a truth that will unlock something unexpected and powerful.
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is approximately 7000 words, or about 20 pages.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
Dark Side of the Moon is a short story about Samantha Moon by J. R. Rain. It is a fun and unique story about her and a giant bat that share a body while living in different worlds, but it gets even more complex than that! Great story and characters. A feel good story!
"Dark Side of the Moon” is the first (of many!) short stories in the Vampire For Hire series (first I’ve read….not first available). It’s free on Kindle, and I couldn’t bring myself to spend a few bucks to pay for the audio version when the book was only going to take 30 minutes to read. But….then I happened to read the author’s bio on Goodreads. Oh hell….now I feel guilty. While I’m sure he was compensated for my free download, I still feel like a freeloader, damnit. Talent deserves to be recompensed.
Many of the recent “Vampire for Hire” books have been annoyingly repetitive….one of the virtues of a short story is there just isn’t room for reintroducing the audience to everything that’s already occurred.
The book itself is delightful. Samantha finally begins communicating with the winged creature she becomes, and she learns lots of cool things. I'm really glad I picked this book up, as I’m sure revelations here will help with later books. 4* - one of the better of the books in the series, despite it being too short to enjoy as an audiobook.
This story was so different from the Other's! Very spiritual and philosophical. A very interesting Read! The lead in snippet of "Bad Blood" is intriguing, a book I think I may read later.
Interesting to see just how powerful Moon has the potential to be. It is nice to see her just indulging in her love of flying. So much else has to be so serious.
Another great read but way too short. I will continue to read these short stories though because I love the character Samantha Moon. So, thanks again Mr Rain.
#8.5 from the Sam Moon Universe. Comes right after ‘Moon River’. Needing to get away after her ex dies, Sam changes into her black bat form and decides to see how high she can fly.
It has been a little over a month since the conclusion of “Moon River.” Samantha finds herself alone, truly alone. Her kids are away at camp. Sam’s sister is still recovering psychologically from her kidnapping and doesn’t want Sam around too much at this time. Danny is dead and Fang is both physically and emotionally distant, no longer sharing a mind link with Sam.
So Sam decides to summon the bat creature and go for a night flight – to the moon. And for the first time, she is able to communicate with the creature. Then again, it’s the first time she’s tried. As they fly higher, together in mind and body, Sam questions the creature about his life, his plane of existence and his relationship to her.
In a little over 30 pages, J.R. Rain uses Sam and Talos to explore the concept of a soul, its creation and its life force. He also uses their communication to explore the difference between true limitations and perceived limitations. And for Sam, with the power of positive thinking, “Fly Me to the Moon” becomes more than the title of an old song.
A Sunday Afternoon review for you ! I LOVE J.R. Rain, Mystery Author and his Creation of Samantha Moon! He has written a whole series of books About Samantha, Mom, Sister, Friend Private Eye, Vampire.. yeah that's right Vampire! But these are not your Glitter in the Sun Books, J.R. Rain lets us visualize and LIVE in the life of Samantha Moon, as in this Novella where Samantha is one with the Creature she becomes when she flies... And she wants to fly to the moon! Is this possible? what about the atmosphere? will she burn her and the Creature she shares a consciousness with totally to bits? How can both Creature and Samantha become one yet be separate entities? This Novella will let you know the secrets of it all... and all you need is to Believe! I give this story 5 flames... another amazing story by J.R. Rain!!
3 Stars – Dark Side of the Moon is an urban fantasy by J.R. Rain and a short story in his Vampire for Hire series.
A short, introspective story in which Samantha Moon summons Talos, the giant vampire bat within her, and takes a trip beyond where she's ever gone before–the moon. As she tests her abilities, her limitations, and explores herself fully, Sam learns to communicate with the creature inside her and discovers as much about herself as she does about him. And in a moment of clarity, she figures out the key to everything–a truth that will unlock something unexpected. Something powerful. Something that will change her life forever.
A well written, super short story (glad it was a freebie), Dark Side of the Moon is another entertaining Samantha Moon read!
This was a nice surprise from the author since Vampire-for-Hire fans are always up for more Sam. While it was nice to be transported back into Sam's world, this wasn't my favorite by a long shot. It is very introspective throughout most of it which was good for the overall series storyline but not as fun to read. However, the end is well worth it and mad me wish that I could spend a day in Sam's shoes (or wings as the case may be).
I probably shouldn’t have read this before reading book 8. While the other short stories I’ve read don’t necessarily have any spoilers, I’m pretty sure this one did (big time). Woops. In this story (aside from the spoilery internal ramblings) we see Sam come to grips with the way she “changes forms” and pushes this form to the limits. She wants to head to the moon. Weird, right? I thought so. It was a strange little story that probably makes more sense after book 8.
J.R. Rain is a good writer. I enjoy reading what he writes and he keeps me intrigued. However, because he is good, I feel he could offer a more of a depth of plot and characterization. It may be that he is keeping his works light because of their brevity and to keep costs down to entice more readers. Whatever, his writing is good for the cost of his books.
This is an extremely short story, that really doesn't add much to the plot. Normally we have a case or something personal about Samantha to uncover in the story. This book would have maybe been better in my eyes as an included chapter in one of the books. But it somewhat fell short as a stand alone.
Wonderful dreamlike short story! It's funny, discovering a new character that has pretty much been right there throughout almost the whole series! Really love the exploration into the universe of Samantha Moon and some of the possibilities. It is very short but also incredibly sweet!
I love these books. This series about the mother, detective who gets attacked and ends up a vampire.
This is a very different and refreshing point of view for a vampire series. It's also not really like a vampire series, I don't think of it that way anyway.
This book was fascinating but way too short. It's hard waiting for the latest in the Samantha Moon series. I sure wish they were longer and came out closer together!
If you are a fan of JR Rain and the Vampire For Hire series you will love this story! It is a short story giving insight on Samantha and the creature that exists within her. Loved seeing this side of Samantha and going on the long flight to a place far away!
Fantastic as always. Dark Side of the Moon is a short, simple and adventurous look into Samantha. She truly discovers her demon inside and learns about her limits or lack thereof.
I like the Samantha Moon Series! This one answered a few questions about the thing she becomes when she flies! Only thing with it! It was a short story!!!
