For the first time ever, eight best-selling and award winning paranormal authors offer eight novels of fantasy, mystery, friendship, and love. Every woman has an enemy to fight and a story to tell. This is 'Our Brand of Heroine.' ~ Darkride by Laura Bradley Rede Mortal Obligation by Nichole Chase Shifting Dreams by Elizabeth Hunter Existence by Abbi Glines Providence by Jamie McGuire Pure & Sinful by Killian McRae The Grey Tier: A Dead Celeb Mystery by Michelle Scott Telesa by Lani Wendt Young ~ All proceeds from this anthology will be donated to RAINN: The nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization and one of "America's 100 Best Charities" according to Worth magazine.
Laura Bradley Rede grew up the oldest of nine kids in a small town in Maine. She now lives in a little hippie-punk neighborhood of Minneapolis with her wonderful partner, their three amazing children, one Great Dane, one dachshund, and four city chickens. She is a winner of the Writers of the Future Award for fantasy and science fiction and the author of the YA paranormal romance DARKRIDE, and its upcoming sequel CROSSFIRE, as well as many YA short stories. She often quotes Bela Lugosi, the original Dracula, who said “I have never met a vampire personally, but I don’t know what might happen tomorrow.” After all, a girl can dream.
Anthologies are tricky to rate - do you rate the volume as whole, or each book individually? At the end of the day, I have decided to do both so please forgive me if my math is going to be slightly off. To start with, more then halve of the stories are YA novels, and I have to confess to not being a huge fan of YA romance, even if I do have Vampire Academy and Twilight (guilty) collections on my book shelves. Having survived my own children's teen- hood with my sanity intact (mainly), I was not looking forward to following all the trials and trepidations of growing up and , for me, it is a tribute to the authors that made me if not disregard, then forget for the time the fact that the protagonists are teenagers and just enjoy a good story. So here it my rating:
5* - Shifting Dreams - LOVE Elizabeth Hunter. 4.5*-4* Darkride(YA); Mortal Obligation(YA); The Grey Tear: Dead Celeb Mystery 3.5*-3* Pure and Sinful; Telesa(YA) 2.5*-2* Existence(YA); Providence(YA)
So here you are. As the whole, this anthology with 8 full length novels that can offer interesting variety of story-telling from group of very talented writers and with proceeds going to an important cause, was a very good reading experience.
Darkride by Laura Bradley Rede - 5 stars Mortal Obligation by Nichole Chase - 2 stars (whiny "heroine") Shifting Dreams by Elizabeth Hunter - 4+ stars (love her!) Existence by Abbi Glines - 2 stars (another whiny heroine) Providence by Jamie McGuire - 3 stars Pure & Sinful by Killian McRae - 2 stars (did not enjoy writing style, story was ok) The Grey Tier: A Dead Celeb Mystery by Michelle Scott - 4 stars Telesa by Lani Wendt Young - 4 stars (loved the imagery and mythology!)
A very uneven anthology. Some really great novellas (Shifting Dreams and Telesa) and some real stinkers (Providence and Mortal Obligation). Overall I'm giving it three stars because I am delighted to find Telesa: The Covenant Keeper, I really enjoyed it a lot and look forward to reading more.
