Ted Higuera, the son of Mexican immigrants, grew up in East LA. An unlikely football scholarship was his ticket out of the barrio. Chris Hardwick was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. The two become college roommates and best friends for life.

As a graduation present, Chris’ father offers the boys the use of his sailboat for a summer cruise up the Inside Passage. Chris brings his girlfriend, Meagan O’Donnell along for the cruise. Ted can’t stand Meagan; he thinks she’s just interested in Chris for his money.

The three have a series of adventures until they stumble upon an al-Qaeda plot to blow up a cruise ship, then the clock starts ticking.

If Chevy Chase had played Indiana Jones, he would be Penn Wallace. Penn has a thirst for adventure, but nothing ever seems to go exactly as planned.

In the spring of 2010 he lost the love of his life, his wife Connie, to Ovarian cancer. Ten years of living with cancer changed Penn's priorities. He learned that you can't live for tomorrow. You must live your dreams today, you never know if tomorrow will come.

He left his career as a software engineer in the summer of 2012 and set sail for the warm blue waters of Baja California in his 56-foot sailboat, the Victory. You may read an account of this adventure on his blog at www.pennwallace.com.

He currently lives on the Victory in La Paz, Mexico, but you never know where he will drop anchor next.

As always, he's working on the next book.

I wanted to like this, but it was hard. First it starts with one of those future scenes meant to entice you to read more. In the end it just ruins things. Some publishers tell writers specially to avoid that in their quieries. Secondly, these character are god awful. I disliked all of them. They were all anoying and have no depth. There are parallel stories going on but really things do not get interesting until 50% in, so just go ahead and skip the first half. The book also lacked polish, in my copy that I downloaded from Amazon, there was one page that has editor notes in it. It looked like someone left 'track changes' on. I have no desire to read the rest of the series.

6/2006, Husky Stadium, Seattle, WA. Christopher “Chris” Hardwick (Ted’s BMF/roommate), & Eduardo “Ted” Higuera were graduating Magna Cum Laude from the U of Washington.
Meagan O’Donnell (Chris’ GF, Irish) had an interview at Nordstrom’s headquarters (5th./Pine).

8/14/2006, Johnstone Straits, Canada. Captain Tom Paget’s The Star of the Northwest (cruise ship) was getting fired upon by some small boats beside them.
The Coast Guard was alerted but probably to no avail. Vancouver, Canada. Horseshoe Bay harbor. The Valkyrie (boat) was leaving
Aboard it was: Yasim Hassan (cell leader), Kalil (diesel mechanic), Mohammed (former Canada’s Royal Brigade member), Hani (navigator/helm driver), & Ahmad Fazul.
Ted, Chris & Meghan were aboard the Defiant (dinghy).
Later, Ted had fallen overboard almost drowned & hurt his arm.
After putting the new fuel pump on the dinghy was still conking out.

The Defiant sailed towards Horseshoe Bay, & then headed toward Queen Charlotte Channel.
The 3 were going to McCarthy’s Tavern to have a few drinks.
Ottawa, Canada. What were Pierre Chasson (Canada’s Deputy Minister of Defense), & Jean Broussard (35+, f, the Canadian Security & Intelligence Service CSIS, asst. director), discussing?
Will a terrorist plot get stopped?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written international thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great international thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

A story of friendships new and old. Adventure in a sailboat. Family relationships frayed and renewed. So many levels to this story. A loving, but domineering father, his estranged daughter and son, and his new love of life because of a beautiful woman. All of this juxtaposed against Arab terrorists who have their sights set on inflicting monumental damage and killing hundreds of people.

The author does a masterful job of bringing the stories together as the three eager friends embark on a summer holiday on the inside passage north of Vancouver. They have their own challenges aboard dad's sailboat that hadn't been used in several years. And their interactions are priceless. A lot of teasing, some loving, some complaining and overall great times together. And they come upon an old-timer who befriends them and not only helps them keep their boat running, but pops back into the story at opportune times.

The story of the Arab terrorists is complicated. The youngest member of the group believes his parents have sold out to modern society and he wants to bring them back to their Islamic roots. However, as preparations begin for the moment of jihad, he becomes increasingly disheartened by the brutality of his brother, but he stays the course. He is the one with the technical know-how to make everything possible.

The way the two stories come together is almost fatalistic. The young people only want to have fun. The terrorists are paranoid about anyone discovering their secret plans. Once their paths cross, it becomes a fight for survival for the three Americans. In the end they become heroes, but lose a lot in the process.

Two boatloads of terrorists want to sink a cruise ship...

This was an easy read...three young folks take off to sail the inside passage on the western Canadian coast. Chris, the experienced sailor, travels with his girlfriend Meghan, and his best friend Ted. They encounter rough seas, dangerous whirlpools and a group of Al Qaida terrorists bent on destroying a cruise ship and all on board.

Good read!

Wish I had read this before I had read all the others but I didn't! I was given a book to review and it happened to fall right snack dab in the middle! I had to go back a few boos but didn't realize I didn't have book 1! And since I knew what was going to happen, it was just plain curiosity that got to me on how it all started! Start from book one read all the way through! You won't be sorry!.

Fun, entertaining, full of adventure!

Ted comes from a lower class family, but his college roommate has a different story. It seems Chris's dad, Harry, has all the money he needs. When Harry offers to finance a sailboat trip for the summer, Chris and Ted head out along with Chris's girlfriend Meagan and her cat. When they run into some questionable characters, they need to decide whether or not to get involved.
Looking forward to the next book!

We just confirmed a cruise to Cuba when I started reading this book. I can only hope The Defiant is riding point with us. There is a lot of background information in the early chapters. But, you even pull for Oscar at the end. I recommend this book, especially because of the current conditions in our world.

Too much foul language.

Although this story looks interesting, after some reading I finally had to give up. Apparently the author is fond of the fzbomb along with other gutter language. Too many good stories out there that have authors who don't stoop to that level.

Deleted the book.

A Great Thriller!

This book should be a movie. It was full of action and suspense. The author did a wonderful job of writing this book. There wasn’t a dull moment. The characters were interesting. The plot was different but so neat!

Just sooooo good.

I loved the pace of this book. I got a sense of who each character was and what drove them. The impact of society, culture, and experience on the decisions we make was very profound.

Good story

This was a good read but too much intimate details. Interesting characters and descriptions of scenery along the the inner channel was great.

Penn is an author that takes time to explain how beautiful scenery is no matter where it is located Puget Sound or Mexico. It is a slow read.

6 knots of tension

I felt like I was taking a sailing cruise though God's fjord with bullets flying. A real contrast in reading sensation. Good entertainment.

A BC thriller!

This is a superbly written spy thriller. Neat that it was set in BC Canada. People familiar with boats will also find this a neat read. Well written.....

I read this while on a cruise of the inside passage, so my rating is probably higher than it would have been otherwise. The premise, terrorists plan an attack on a passenger cruise ship, which three college graduates stumble onto while on a private sailing tour of the same area, caught my attention. It is indicated as a Teddy Higuera thriller, but most of what I read about was sailing a small boat, and the community that develops around sailors and seafarers. The lead character often refers to himself in third person, and occasionally some of the other characters do also. For me, to be a thriller, this story could have been about a third of the length. As I indicated, if I hadn't read this while cruising the inside passage, my rating would probably been two stars.

Initially the plot of the book seemed interesting, unfortunately it didn't take long before all the characters were unlikeable. Most of all the main character, "Ted Higuera", who throughout the book makes his opinion known in the third person. ie; Then Ted said, "Teddy don't like no _____, dude." This wasn't quite annoying enough to distract from Teddy's rude, childish, sexist attitude. I wouldn't bother reading on in the series even if the books were offered to me for free.

A Delightful Tale Of Heroism

We have two college students who just graduated from school, and decide to take a summer cruise on Dad's family yacht. What a lovely description of misadventure is how I would describe most of the book. I very much enjoyed the plot and characters involved. Enjoy!

I picked this up as Kindle Prime free book. It was fun to read and I would rate it a good airplane or beach read. I enjoyed it enough that I would read the second book in this series when it is available

Get the next one now!

This book was excellent. Moved at a fast clip from the day-to-day and never stopped. I think this is more a young adult read but is very well written with excellent character development and a solid plot line. Looking forward to the next one!

A good story about kids who thwart a terrorist attack in the Pacific northwest. I liked the story, which covered the area that I lived for many years. I didn't like the whining of Ted. It got a bit old by the end of the book.

This was an ok book. It hooked me from the start but then i felt that it slowed down a bit. It took me over a week to finish, which is unusual for me with books. I would recommend it, not sure it I would pay to read it though as it was freebie for me.
