The Warlock's Friend

Rate this book
A hunter who even witches are scared of, a witch who excels at city magic, and a young boy who may be more powerful than the other two if he can just learn to martial his mind, are the unlikely accomplices in a trek across time and space.

All to save the Earth at a time when shifting global consciousness is destabilizing mother nature as much as it’s driving people crazy.

But to retrieve the one thing that can restore the balance to Earth, they have to deal with an all-powerful warlock older than time itself.

And so far, no one has ever broken free of his spells of entrapment, least of all this motley crew. Even an entire planet on the cusp of conscious awakening may well be no match for him.

While action-packed sci-fi/techno-thrillers set in the near future are my forte, I also stray into other genres from time to time, such as space operas, paranormal fantasy, and detective stories. All my novels can be described as action-thrillers, no matter the sub-genre.

You can sample my writing with a free sci-fi e-book set in the near future by visiting my website https://deancmoore.com and signing up for my email list.

I live in the country where I breed bluebirds, which are endangered in these parts, as my small contribution to restoring nature's balance. When I'm not writing, or researching my next book, I may also be found socializing with friends, or working in the garden.

If you'd like to know what compels me to write, it's simple. I write as a force for peace. Fiction has a way of engaging our whole minds, not just our intellects, but various layers of our conscious, superconscious, and unconscious. Novels also encourage our left and right cerebral hemispheres to get in sync and, with just enough magic and wizardry, can help to transform people into more enlightened souls (the writer included) better than a hundred years of therapy or rational arguments to the same ends.

I've remained a lifelong student of philosophy, spirituality, psychology, science, and the arts.

Mark Freeman Enterprises (MFE) is my company. I sometimes publish under that label or simply under Amazon Digital Services.

Amazing mind-bending adventure!
To begin with, I must say that I have never read a book quite like this one. The story and writing style captivated me immediately, and I found that reading “The Warlock’s Friend” was like being on a wild and crazy ride in an amusement park, never knowing what will happen next, but thoroughly enjoying the surprises all the way to the end. I was also impressed by Dean C. Moore’s strong vocabulary and narrative skill which suit this style of ‘hard-core’ Fantasy perfectly. The characters are developed as the action unfolds, and the relationships between them, particularly the hero, Heldor, and the enigmatic Damian, who I personally found the most interesting and intriguing. The adventure escalates when these two characters, along with a motley crew of other-worldly beings, travel through a portal to another world where the reader’s imagination is even more stretched and tantalized. If I may quote an example of this:
“The cars that couldn’t find parking in the parking towers or on the streets climbed up the sides of the buildings and cloaked themselves as part of the architecture, using an advanced form of paint that lent them their chameleon abilities. Though, some of the cars could also shift form to look distinctly less carlike. Of the ones that stayed on the ground, it didn’t hurt that the base configuration of the vehicles was very aerodynamic and curvy, so it was easy enough for them with minor modifications to emulate more organic forms, either of the earthen sculptural variety, like modern art on display in a piazza, or of still more natural forms, like boulders.”
This is just one of many such passages to tickle your fancy, and for a mind-bending journey through other worlds – while still relating to known earthly paradigms – I can highly recommend this book.

The Warlock’s Friend is quite simply a great read. From the first pages the mood, characterisation and setting are skilfully and vividly done. A monster hunter, a vanquished giant werewolf and an erotic encounter with a witch deep inside a magical forest gets the “speculative” ball rolling and the narrative pace never lets up.
Incredibly ambitious in both time and location the author somehow manages to make it all (almost) believable. I think the major reason for this is that despite the multiple protagonists, various narrative plot elements and the sheer multitude of magical and monstrous creatures the author keeps the actual characterisations believable, allowing us to feel for them as we follow their quest to retrieve Thresdar’s crystals.
The dialogue is also on the whole concise and to the point. Too often I find fantasy works contain overlong, overblown, melodramatic language which only serves to make it unbelievable and breaks the “suspension of disbelief.”
Whilst ostensibly a fantasy (group quest to save countless others, magic lands, portals, witches, dragons and a whole host of fantasy characters) there is also a smattering of aliens, time shifts and a multiverse that sows a distinct science fiction thread throughout the work.
If you like your speculative fiction eclectic and taken to extremes then this one if for you.

The Warlock's Friend tells the story of the main hero, a hunter named Heldor, who joins the expedition with the greatest of warlocks to hunt down a kind of scientifically mysterious creature. They travel from Thresdar, a qualm setting with no lack of entertaining occurrences, to the Werth City, a creepy environment, where one's life would feel forsaken and threatened.

It is difficult to choose one particular character that one would love the most in this story, because the author, Dean C Moore, has painted their characteristics so well that one would feel highly acquainted with them. But if choose I must, I would go for Heldor and Damian. It is enjoyable to read the friendship developed between the hunter and the bloodsucking warlock.

This story is filled with twists and suspenses, with no lack of humour. One would find themselves frolicking with Munich and Silian, two little fairy-like warlocks; or having intellectual debates from time to time with an ambitious child called Winston. I, myself, find the idea of Winston creating a gruesome guardian through mere imagination, intriguing.

The fights occur in the Werth City are greatly detailed that one could feel the characters aches throughout the battles with the antagonists. One would find themselves liking the sophisticated magician called Selina there, who deftly creates magical dolls as companions too. Appraisal should go to the author for skillfully drawing parallels between the emotions.

The Warlock's Friend suits for audience of all genders and ages, especially young adults who favours Sci-Fi, with a touch of kinky romance. One would find themselves keep turning the pages and racing to finish the book. It is like Van Helsing meeting Hansel and Gretel, the Witch Hunter. This book, written by such prolific writer, is a masterpiece not to be missed.

Publisher Description: A hunter who even witches are scared of, a witch who excels at city magic, and a young boy who may be more powerful than the other two if he can just learn to martial his mind are the unlikely accomplices in a trek across time and space.

Review: The cover art is relentlessly bad and will keep you up at night. I requested this novel due to the rave reviews it garnered on Goodreads. Maybe I am some malcontent residing at the fringes of society. Just this big ole hating machine thumping on the insecure and feckless. Man this novel was all over the fugging place. At once inventive, creative and prosaic coupled with weak scene and character development, scattered progression, grammatical and spelling errors and a lot of “How did I get here?” moments. While the movement was there in spades, it shadowed any sincere character development that may have burgeoned along the way.

We are left with one dimensional characters that seem to have no compassion other than what their immediate needs are (sex, killing beasties, sex etc.). They lack any real morals and could give a shite about those around them. Really bizarre behavior for traveling companions in constant life or death situations.

This novel needs a BIG LOGIC reset button on the cover in order to tone it down so that it makes sense to the reader. Then you would have a really good story line. As it is a long read, if you get halfway through it you mays well finish. Much like watching those newscasters faint on TV. Kind of scary but you laugh at their misfortune.

I have been reading Dean C Moore's work for about a year now and first fell in love with a very very early copy of this he made available for free many many months ago. Back then it was a germ of an idea and about the third of the size.

This latest version is brilliant. The Warlock's Friend is rooted more in fantasy than Sci fi at the beginning but don't worry because as usual Dean C Moore manages to merge the two genres seamlessly and you Sci fi junkies will get your fix too. The characterization in this novel is excellent and it was easy to find yourself lost in both the worlds- yes there are two of them. Heldor was my personal favorite and I would love to see this guy in a future novel. As with all Dean C Moore's books; expect great pace, humor, a plot that twists and turns and tests your mental agility.

All round, this ticked all the boxes for great entertainment, ingenuity, and great value read.

Dean C Moore doesn't hesitate to drop us right in the middle of the action with The Warlock's Friend where 'Life is what you make it', takes on a whole new meaning.
The story starts with the roguishly appealing Helgor on the magical realm of Thresdar, where you can't always trust what you see or feel. Fantastical creatures abound, with  hell beasts, vampires, witches and dragons, to name only a few.
This is an immensely exciting and entertaining read with lots of action, witty dialogue and some laugh out loud moments.
I particularly loved the characters of Damian (Vampire/Warlock) and Silian (small human butterfly)
Moore is a very talented story teller who makes the unbelievable seem possible with his descriptions of alien technology, 'out of this world' characters, and settings. He manages to easily stretche the bounds of the imagination to impressive levels as the story progresses.
This is a must-read for adult, Sci-Fi/ space/ paranormal/ fantasy/ steampunk lovers!

This was one of my favourite reads of the year and given how much I enjoyed another of this author’s books this one just reiterated to me how talented a writer Dean C.Moore truly is. The descriptions were mesmerizing and the pace relentless. It had everything I wanted from a fantasy-genre mash-up book and more: great characters, witty dialogue and fast-action. Dean C. Moore is a very talented writer and no doubt he will accumulate a legion of fans with his writing.

The Warlock's Friend by Dean C Moore was none other than electric. Once again Dean has creating an exciting world that had me gripped in my seat, enjoying the contrasting styles of both the Hunter and the Warlock. With great description and effortless story telling ability, Dean has once again delivered with something worthy of a round of applause. A brilliant read that gets a thumbs up from me.

So, how is The Warlock’s Friend categorized?Like the shape-shifters who are its characters, It is absolutely the only work I have ever read that could morph into any genre. The main genre is fantasy, but it is also comical, erotic, science fiction and a tad dystopian. Moore is clearly very skilled at creating multi-genre works that satisfy. His writing skills are superb. Mr. Moore can write at an educated level without being so esoteric that the reader can’t follow him

A Warlock’s Friends follows a rag-tag team from Thesdor who are trying to obtain crystals from the city of Werth. The team consists of a half-human hunter named Heldor, a cosmopolitan witch named Cleo, an ordinary adolescent boy named Winston who can create monsters from his dreams, a vampire named Damian, a pint-sized wizard named Munich, and Silian. The novel follows them on their adventures as they find that even with all of their magic combined, they are still at times ill-equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead of them All characters are so fully developed that you feel you know them. The good-natured banter between the members of the group is hilarious.

One of the most interesting aspects of this story is the irrelevancy of the time-space continuum. In one scene they are holding a Roman-Senate style meeting, and in the next, they are in the city full of modern technology. There are surrealistic images, such as the very large laundromat, that hints at a Salvador Dali painting. Neither time nor space seems to matter, as the characters can teleport at will and everything from the Egyptian pyramids to the modern-day events in New York are mentioned casually as one of the characters describe them as an event they witnessed. And quotes such as “Nothing numbs the mind into unconsciousness faster than getting anything you want,” “The future is not set in stone. it is up to us to change it with our actions” and “Hold onto your dreams too tight, they slip away from you like the sand between your fingers. You have to trust a little that the universe knows just what you need,” ad an irresistible philosophical element.

A little Logan’s Run, a touch of Chronicles of Narnia, a dash of Happy Potter, and a generous helping of Dante’s Inferno, creates, in my opinion, a modern -day masterpiece. Well done. Mr. Moore. I am going to play the role of Cleo for a second and play Spin the Bones….I see a movie deal in your future.

The Warlock's Friend by Dean C Moore is my second outing with this author and I am Jonesing for more. I cannot get enough of this author's weird sense of humour mixed with over-the-top violence and characters so off the wall that Hunter S Thompson novels would look normal.
First the story - A hunter who even witches are scared of, a witch who excels at city magic, and a young boy who may be more powerful than the other two if he can just learn to martial his mind, are the unlikely accomplices in a trek across time and space.

Add to this amazing fantasy novel the best action sequences, insane characters doing insane things like David Lynch insane, humour that can only be described as WTF? and blend until a bloody goo of brilliance, oh and there's sex too. This book should be a #1 bestseller. Very highly recommended.

The Warlock’s Friend is the first story by Dean C. Moore that I’ve had the chance to read and I can definitely say I will be coming back to check out his other works.

The plot focuses around the adventures of Heldor, a monster hunter with a knack for weapon making, Cleo, a witch gifted with city magic, Winston, a boy who may be more powerful than the both of them and a warlock named Damian, whose motivations and origins are shrouded in mystery. These, along with a host of other colourful characters journey through Thresdar and beyond in hopes of restoring balance to the world.

The author does a fantastic job of blending science fiction and fantasy as well as elements of comedy and the paranormal. There was a lot of work that went into the creation of these worlds, and one can certainly tell when reading the prose from the amount of knowledge and detail within it.

Dean C Moore is a master story-teller who has used his unique imagination to fuse Sci-Fi with Fantasy in this engaging and entertaining story.
I read an early draft of this book about a year ago when it was freely offered and have just re-read the enlarged and, dare I say, improved final edition.
The story is populated with strong characters who are unlikely allies, but who need each other. They communicate in crisp, pertinent dialogue laced with dry humour. This book is as amusing as it is entertaining, but watch out for the author's hidden messages for our times in the sub-text.

This is one of my favorite Dean C. Moore's stories. The Warlock's Friend has all of the humor you would expect for Moore's stories, but then gives you more. Some of the comic relief characters are absolutely hilarious. But at he same time the world Moore creates is quite creepy. Another theme Moore has in this book as he has in a few other's is the perfect stranger match up. On one side you have a Vampire Hunter, and on the other side the Vampire himself. When they are not trying to kill eachother they are teaming up agaisnt forces more evil then the Warlock himself. Great read.

This is a fantastical entertaining story filled with rich life like characters and spellbinding locations and intriguing plot lines. It's mixed with suspense, action, and just enough humor to keep you up all night reading just as I was. It's genre infusion at its best and has some important self discovery philosophy hiding under the surface. A truly great novel from a skilled, fresh, relevant author.

Dean C. Moore hits it out of the ballpark once again with this fun and exciting book. One of my favorite things about Dean is his ability to create new worlds that have fun and exciting characters in them. The Warlock's Friend is a fantasy story but also has a lot of great sci-fi aspects to it. Dean's versatility as a writer really shines through this book.

My thoughts while reading this book were, John Wayne of the wizard world. If you are after a mixture of gunslinging mixed with wizards and sci-fi and endless action not allowing room for a breath, then this is your book. Reader beware: There is no room for snoozing in this book.

‘The Warlock’s Friend’ is my introduction to the Science Fiction Adventure genre. No doubt, it would make a fascinating techno thriller movie.
