The River #6

Devil's Throat

Rate this book
Far away, in the remote deserts of southern Nevada, lies a cave with secrets: strangely twisted creatures, mass deaths, and a hole so deep, anything that goes in, never gets out.

Steven’s son Jason has been taken to this desolate place by someone bent on vengeance. Steven and his father Roy pursue them in a desperate attempt to save Jason’s life.

However, the River is different here, where fallout from nuclear testing has altered the ghosts and entities inhabiting the many abandoned mines and hidden caves surrounding Devil’s Throat. Steven and Roy are on unfamiliar ground; they seek the help of locals Winn and Deem to save Jason from a horrific ghost town, once submerged, now revealed.

Devil's Throat is a fast-paced horror and suspense novel, and the sixth book in The River series.

One of the keys to my enjoyment of The River Series is the consistency Michael Richan has with his characters. You won't find them suddenly doing something that will give you that pause of--"Wait! He/she wouldn't do/say that!". His characters STAY in character, and their mental growth throughout the series is a very natural progression.

In book #6, DEVIL'S THROAT, Richan gives us quite possibly his most complex storyline to date. We start out with our favorite father/son duo Roy and Steven, on a mission to save Steven's own son (Jason) from an evil they thought they left in their past. We are soon joined by two new dynamic characters, Deem and Winn. These two also have the "gift", but the area where they live is nothing like what Roy and Steven are used to..... Here is where things REALLY take off! Without spoiling the story for others, all I can say is that the ghosts and other entities in this place are far different--and more dangerous--than any other previously encountered. Once more, the blood/horror factor is ratcheted up, and several "phobias" are sure to bring some readers more than a mild discomfort.

As always, theses stories can be read as a stand-alone, but this particular tale takes off immediately after the events in book #5 (SUICIDE FOREST). In order to get the most out of DEVIL'S THROAT, I would personally recommend reading the previous 2 books in the series (EXIMERE, and SUICIDE FOREST), as there are many references to pick up on from those two, in particular. Again, just my own opinion.

I've been following this series since its beginning, and eagerly await each new installment. I'm hoping to see more of these two new characters in future installments!

Highly recommended!

I won this book in a Good Reads give away by the author. The Devils Throat is the 6th book in the River series. Roy and Steven are on a quest to save Jason, Steven son. Jason has been taken to St. Thomas by Michael. Michael is looking for revenge for the killing of Lukas. Roy and Steven need some help to get Jason back. Winn and Deem also have the gift. Winn and Deem help the boys fight the ghosts of the Devils Throat. This is a fast past novel with plenty of action. It is the kind of book that you want to read in one sitting. I have read the first two books is this series and have enjoyed them very much. Looking forward to other stories about about Roy and his son Steven.

This is the 6th book in the River series and my first. Passed down through generations Roy, his son Stephen and Stephens son Jason have the gift of being able to see ghosts and enter their world called The River. When Jason is befriended and taken away by Michael, evil from Roy and Stephens past the race is on to find him.

I really liked this book. It grabs you from the first page and holds on to the last. I had a hard time putting it down. The characters are likable and as far as ghost and paranormal it's right at the top. I plan on getting the other 5. I won this from LibraryThing Member Giveaways.

I won this book as a first read from goodreads!

This is my kind of book!! Ghosts and "The Gifted".

Steven's son, Jason, disappears. It seems that he has been taken by a not so upstanding individual that Steven and his father, Roy, has encounter before. It is up to Steven, Roy and some other interesting characters to rescue Jason before he goes beyond the point of no return under the control ghostly evilness.

This was a really easy and fast read for me! I love all the ghost and other paranormal stuff so I really liked it! Made me want to read the books that precede it.

I loved how each of these books could stand alone by themselves or be a part of this great series. I originally though this was the last book in this series, but just found out there is more! Very happy girl.

Fast Paced!

Stephen and Roy have come to the realization that Michael, an enemy of theirs, has kidnapped Jason, Stephen's son. However when it comes to the Gifted nothing is ever easy. Michael has somehow placed Jason in a coma like state and there doesn't seem to be a way to wake him up. But with the help of Deem and Winn, who are Gifted, they might pull off the impossible. But Michael, ever resourceful, has an entire town of strange mutated ghosts on his side and Michael wants revenge. Since Jason is bait, will Stephen be able to save his son as well as avoid the trap that Michael has planned for him?
Great series and a perfect introduction for the Downwinder series!

Of all the places

Very good. Liked getting background on Steven and Roy. I really have all the books far. I lived in Las Vegas for almost years and this was like a trip down memory lane as far as all of the town's mentioned. These books are really easy to read and througherly enjoyable. These ghosts are really scared and I'm certainly glad they are not real.

Yet again with the slam dunk story telling. I would love to meet these characters in real life, minus the baddies, like the demons and evil hag type ghosts. The regular going through their daily routine ghosts would be okay, haha.
Seriously though these are the kinds of well rounded characters I love in stories. They're not all just saccharine sweet and la-dee-dah about the gifts they have. They are more like you're neighbor, the guy in the check-out next you, everyday people with a little something extra thrown in.

Great story! This one was a bit more scarey which I liked! Finally Stephen started helping his son with his gift but only after he was kidnapped by his nemisis Michael, who started brainwashing him against him. They make more friends in Nevada and Utah, who are the basis for the spin-off series. Now I don't know what to read next! That's fine with me as I really am enjoying this series.
