The Astley Chronicles #6

Romancing the Rifleman

Rate this book
She’s the one woman Harrington Astley can never have.

Lady Diana Latimer might be everything Harrington Astley has ever wanted. But her older brother, the Duke of Trevissick, despises him, and would never give his approval for them to wed. The beautiful girl who makes him feel like he’s more than just cannon fodder is as unattainable as a star in the sky.

Diana Latimer has had it with fops and fortune hunters.

Making her London debut seemed like a lark three years ago. But after her brother saddled her with an absurdly large dowry, Diana has found herself besieged by fortune hunters. There’s only been one man she’s truly liked—Harrington Astley, a handsome army lieutenant with an irreverent sense of humor. Now Harrington is back in London, but thanks to her brother’s meddling, he’s convinced that nothing can ever come of the attraction flaring between them.

When the Foreign Office asks Harrington to attend a house party to try to ferret information out of a Swedish prince he befriended during his last deployment, Diana sees her chance. Harrington doesn’t speak a word of Swedish. But Diana does. Of course, a young, unmarried lady cannot attend a house party without a chaperone… which is why she informs Harrington that they need to marry. For King and country.

Sometimes you have to fake it ‘til you make it!

Harrington promises Diana’s brother that they will annul their fake marriage just as soon as their mission for the Crown is complete. But Diana never agreed to that plan, and she’s not giving Harrington up without a fight. She’s going to do everything within her power to seduce her husband and turn their fake marriage into a love that lasts a lifetime.

Please note that the heat level is red hot!

After reading Black Beauty for the 1,497th time, Courtney McCaskill was inspired to write her own stories. Reviews of her early work were mixed, with her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Compton, saying, “Please stop writing all of your assignments from the point of view of a horse.”

Today, Courtney lives in Austin, Texas with the hero of her own story, who holds the distinction of being the world’s most sarcastic pediatrician. She is reliably informed by her six-year-old son that she gives THE BEST hugs, “because you’re so squishy, Mommy.” When she’s not busy almost burning down her house attempting to make a traditional Christmas pudding, she enjoys playing the piano, learning everything there is to know about Kodiak bears, and of course, curling up with a great book! It's good to be back on Goodreads! Boy, you start college again, and you have no time to read books or write reviews because of assignments! *Cracks knuckles, starts typing*

I may have forgotten how to write reviews since I have not written one in over two years, but here goes...

I've been reading Courtney's books since her debut. Her writing is fresh, funny, and fast-paced (that was surprisingly alliterative!). I have always loved the Astleys, and Harrington has been making interesting appearances in the previous books, so I had a lot of fun reading his story.

This book can be described as sweetly romantic. I loved the combination of a strong, witty heroine and a dependable, yet unsure, hero. The romance was steady and consistent, with a hyper-focus on the couple, which was a huge plus (personally, I prefer a straightforward narrative without a lot of ancillary characters). Harrington and Diana had the benefit of having known each other for a spell and the opportunity to use the foundation of their friendship to build a good dynamic together, which the author capitalised on. The best aspect of their romance was that they talked to each other, listened to one another, and made no assumptions (I know how much we hate the miscommunication trope!).

Harrington was a bundle of insecurities, but it was quite endearing to me. I liked how unsure he was of himself, but he was willing to take action when given good advice and input. According to most psychology books, it makes him a wise, functioning adult! (yay!).

Diana was pure gold (or diamond, or platinum, or titanium, whichever one is more precious). She was sharply intelligent, independent, and strong, making her a perfect partner for Harrington.

Murcus added a goodly amount of levity to the entire story. Who knew Dukes could be such fusspots?

The reason this book fell shy of 5 stars is that the whole "covert assignment" bit went nowhere (I mean, was he being tested for spy school?) And the entire shipping disaster en route to Ireland was boring (sorry, no other word fit); it added nothing to the story that could not have been delivered elsewhere, so much so that I stopped reading the book for a day before I picked it up again.

Overall, it was a solid romance with a healthy dose of steam—a recommended read.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All views expressed below are my own.

Lady Diana Latimer is the sister of the Duke of Trevissick, who is very protective of her, except that he has given her a huge dowry, which has caused lots of money hungry suitors to hound her, and isn’t really helping to keep her safe. When handsome, funny, army lieutenant Harrington Astley returns to London (he’s also her best friend’s brother), he doesn’t think he stands a chance with Diana because her brother hates him. When Harrison is given a mission to find out information from a Swedish prince and doesn’t speak Swedish, he asks Diana for help. Since Harrison is the only man she actually likes among all the men after her, she seizes her chance and announces that they must be married. Even though her brother objects, her aunt is her guardian, so he is overruled. What follows is a fun story with a man who doesn’t think he’s deserving of a beautiful, intelligent young lady and woman who knows what she wants and goes after it with all she’s got. If only she can convince Harrington that he’s what she wants more than anything and convince her brother of the same thing so he’ll leave them alone, they can make a wonderful life together. Even though Diana came from a background of abuse, she was raised by her Aunt Griselda, a very strong female figure who taught her independence and resilience. I felt bad for Harrison’s lack of self-esteem, even though he had accomplished a lot in his army career and was well thought of by his superiors, he needed to be convinced that Diana was right where she wanted to be. There was some adventure, some humor, and some very steamy scenes, along with some heart to heart talks that resolved a lot of issues, and then a lovely conclusion to a wonderful story.

Harrington Astley always had feelings towards lady Diana Latimer, and he thought that he might have a chance to win her hand. There is one little problem in this situation - her brother Marcus. He literally hates Harrington, and he stands in the way of their happiness. What he never saw coming - Diana's determination to be with the man she loves. When an opportunity comes knocking on her door, she sees the perfect solution - get married in order to save their country.

I only suspected how good Diana would be as a character, but I never knew she would be that damn good. Nothing and no one would be telling her what to do, she will have Harrington as a husband no matter what. Her fire never burnt out. She was a fiesty one - basically a woman in love. It was exactly what Harrington needed. He was portrayed as a loveable, handsome and good character, and he really was. But under all of that, there was a tad bit of insecurity. He thought that he was not good enough for Diana's love. But her patience and love proved him wrong.

To summarize all of that, I can only say that I enjoyed reading Diana and Harrington's love story. I've not read the other books from the series yet, but as soon as I can, I will fix that.

***I received an ARC from the author and my review is voluntarily***.

Be prepared to be blown away by the latest Astley Chronicle series. Courtney knows how to keep her readers engaged.
It was funny, full of heat & passion.
Diana and Harrington are perfectly suited for each other. She is strong minded, knows what she wants, very down to earth despite being a Duke’s sister.
Harrington the jester of the family lacks the confidence in himself and think he’s not good enough for Diana but is proven wrong when she chose him as husband.
A beautiful read not to be missed and I’m already longing for the next book.
Thank you Courtney for the ARC, I loved it 🥰

4.5⭐️

I’ve been a fan of the Astley Chronicles from Courtney McCaskill since I picked up my first book of hers! Now with book 6, Romancing the Rifleman out today I’m excited to share my love of this book!

The Astley and the Latimer families are no strangers in this series, and they come together again as Lady Diana Latimer, sister to the Duke of Tavissick finally finds a man during her third London season that’s not after her fortune, but her opinion- Mr. Harrington Astley, an army lieutenant in London between assignments.

Too bad for the two of them, that Harrington and Diana‘s brother are worst enemies!

But Diana is not one to lose out on an opportunity, and when the foreign office asks Herrington to spy on a Swedish prince, she jumps at the opportunity to help out with her language skills… And offers to marry him in order to travel to a house party together!

Harrington can’t believe his luck but throughout their marriage this is a continued affliction where he doesn’t feel worthy of Diana‘s love or to be her partnership…

This was an interesting story where the real drama is within Harrington and his inability to find worthiness within. Lady Deanna is an amazing partner and allows him to be himself just as he does for her, thus together they work on his acceptance of himself- flaws and all.

I love the family dynamics that Courtney McCaskill always includes in our stories, but I also enjoyed the one on one relationship building that Diana and Harrington work on together.

This was an excellent addition to the chronicles, and I can’t wait to see the next sibling find their match!

Harrington Astley has a thing for Diana Latimer, but Diana’s brother, Marcus, despises Harrington so he’s convinced himself that Diana is the one woman he can’t have. Harrington is the only man Diana has ever liked, and she is determined to have him no matter what her brother thinks.

I have long hoped that Harrington and Diana would end up together, so I found this book particularly satisfying. Diana might just be the queen of this whole series. She is fierce and stubborn and brave and patient (oh so patient), and I adore her. Harrington has always been the lovable and popular you her brother, but we get to see a different side of him in Romancing the Rifleman. He has some deep-rooted feelings of inferiority and insecurity, and watching him work through those feelings with Diana’s help is beautiful.

This book has all of Courtney’s signature humor with just a touch of angst. It’s part of her Astley Chronicles series, but it can be read as a standalone (although I’d recommend reading in order for maximum enjoyment). I can’t wait to read what she writes next!

Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is book 6 of the Astley Chronicles and, FYI, I have not read all of the preceding books, and am reading them in a wiggly piggly manner. Undoubtedly, it would probably have been better to read them in order, but I will play catch up later and I still enjoyed this story regardless.

This is a lighthearted historical romance with a MMC who with hidden low self esteem, who desires positive reinforcement and to be managed by a strong woman, and a FMC who, despite being the sister of a Duke, desires to be valued as more than a decorative bit of Society femininity with a large dowry. It is a sweet, spicy secret-infatuation romance, with a glancingly light touch on dominance/submission.

Lady Diana Latimer was raised by the redoubtable Aunt Griselda, and as such is a strong minded, intelligent woman, well able to think for and take care of herself. But her brother, the Duke of Trevissick, is determined that she be treated as she ought to be - which in his mind means pampering his sister, having her participate in all the events of the London Season, and being properly courted by appropriate suitors, with the largest dowry of all the eligible misses. None of which is what Lady Diana actually desires. It is appropriate that she is named for the Roman goddess of the hunt.

Lieutenant Harrington Astley has returned to London on leave from the Army, and discovers to his chagrin that his father has put him up for election as an MP and he has won! Harrington feels that he is nothing more than canon fodder, and compared to his elder brother, not capable or worthy of the position. But in a chance encounter with Lady Diana, he is successful in his first challenge in his role. This gives him a desire to spend more time with Lady Diana to gain her insight and input in how he should proceed, especially when other political figures task him with duties in his role as MP that he desires to fulfill. He has always admired Diana's mind, and secretly harboured an attraction to her for years, but has never felt he was worthy of her, especially considering the ill will her brother bears towards Harrington thanks to his childhood pranks against the future duke in school.

Lady Diana, likewise, has had a secret crush on her friend's handsome and popular brother, and was thrilled to overhear him defending her when she was being slurred by others. Despite her brothers. As Harrington is given missions to fulfill in his role of MP, he and Diana are drawn to work together, and this ends up leading to a plan for them to engage in a marriage of convenience to allow them to attend a house party together, in order to investigate the private correspondence of the host. It is because they have yet to admit their growing desire and feelings to each other, that this is a marriage of convenience. But Diana is determined to use the situation to her advantage, with plans on turning the marriage into a true marriage. But Harrington, despite his undeclared love, is convinced that Diana would never really want him for a husband, and because of Trevissick's interference, is determined to be honorable and give Diana a way out of the supposedly unwanted relationship with him, when the mission ends.

I love Diana's take charge attitude and determination to get her way. She learned well from Aunt Griselda. Deep inside, this is what Harrington wants from her, and every time she takes charge and manages things so adroitly, he falls harder and further. He openly seeks her opinion and input in all things, which makes Diana feel seen and respected, reinforcing her desire to have Harrington as her husband in truth, as he sees and respects HER for herself - something that not even her beloved, but busybody brother sees. They are perfect for each other, but when Diana discovers that Harrington suffers from a lack of self esteem, and constantly feels undeserving, especially of her, that is a barrier to their future happiness together that she must work to overcome.

Great, fun characters in both Diana and Harrington. I love how hard and fast he falls for her, and how he loves her strength and leadership, and supports her in her strengths. Great side characters as well, in the Astley family, and Aunt Griselda, but Diana's brother, the Duke, seriously oversteps in all his interference and I am surprised she did not shoot some kind of projectile into the soft part of his hindquarters. Love the duel scene between her and Trevissick.

4.25 stars out of 5

Lady Diana Latimer and Harrington Astley might seem like an unlikely pair at first glance, but they are absolute perfection together! Diana, the strong and intelligent sister of Marcus, the Duke of Trevissick, shines brilliantly despite her brother’s overbearing protectiveness. While Marcus’s intentions stem from a troubled past protecting Diana from their abusive father, he often overlooks her remarkable independence and fierce spirit.

Diana, a wealthy heiress uninterested in the superficial trappings of society, longs for authenticity and connection. Enter Harrington Astley, an army lieutenant with a wicked sense of humor and a heart full of charm. Their rekindled acquaintance after his return from service sparkles with witty banter and undeniable chemistry. As Diana assists Harrington with his political endeavors, their bond deepens, filled with swoon-worthy moments that had me grinning with delight.

Marcus’s disdain for Harrington, rooted in old schoolboy mischief, adds a delicious tension. Yet, Diana’s determination is unstoppable. Even under the guise of a faux marriage for a covert mission involving a Swedish prince, their passion blazes. Marcus’s attempts to meddle and even secure an annulment only add fuel to the fire of their irresistible love story.

Harrington, with his endearing insecurities and hidden vulnerabilities, tugged at my heartstrings. Watching him slowly recognize his own worth through Diana’s unwavering love was both heartwarming and exhilarating. Their candid conversations, heartfelt confessions, and Diana’s fearless pursuit of her desires made their romance feel authentic and deeply moving.

What truly enchanted me was how Harrington cherished Diana’s opinions, valuing her intellect and spirit in an era where women were often silenced. Their connection was pure magic, radiant, passionate, and palpable to everyone except, hilariously, Marcus.

Their journey brims with hope, dreams, sizzling passion, and delightful twists that kept me eagerly turning pages. I didn’t want their story to end!

McCaskill has gifted us with an unforgettable tale, rich with charm, heart, and swoon-worthy romance. A truly delightful read that left me smiling long after the final page!

I received a complimentary advanced copy from the author, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

Tropes: MMC with a secret; strong MFC; brother’s enemy
Steam level: 3 (with reverse-power-exchange kink thrown in)
Part of a series, fine on its own

I wish this had worked for me. 3.5 stars that I can’t quite bump up. Most of this author’s books tend to be lighthearted and charming, rom-comish in tone, HR fantasy (the age of consent and annulment storyline, for example, are not exactly true to life here). But the characters, scenes, and dialog are typically smart and funny. This one didn’t end up being quite my cup of tea, though.

Yay:
–For MFC, Diana, even though she is anachronistic, because she’s different from the typical romance novel heroine. No “woe is me”. Her snarkiness and confidence make her easy to root for.
–For Diana and MMC Harrington’s connection and partnership. They’re sweet and sexy together, even if their steam does overshadow the storyline.
–For Diana’s aunt, who’s a hoot.
–The details involving Regency army life were well researched.

Nay (note, no major spoilers below, but If you don’t like any spoilers at all, best not to read on):
–I usually like this writer’s cinnamon roll heroes, and I usually love a war hero MMC, but Harrington is too fundamentally insecure. The self-loathing got so repetitive I had a difficult time picturing him as a leader of men.
–Marcus. Ugh. I thought he knew Harrington’s secret and that was why he disliked him so much (which still would have made Diana’s brother a jerk). But no, he’s stubbornly holding a grudge from when he and Harrington were kids. Even after Harrington apologizes ad nauseam for being a twerp when he was twelve, and other people vouch for him as an adult–and he is a war hero, after all. It would be different if Harrington had a rep for being an abusive drunk, but he doesn’t.
–The plot started out fun but petered out. I loved the idea of the MC’s working together as offbeat spies. What happened?
–OK, the kink. This is a “different strokes” thing, I know, but I read a book not too long ago by another author I like that featured the same dirty book idea and same kink. A little goes a long way for me.

Overall: cute and charming for the most part, but I was looking for a bit of a stronger plot and a stronger MMC.

I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest, voluntary opinion. Thanks to the author for this opportunity.

This is a wonderful series and can be read in any order. I have read them out of order and loved each story. I do plan to go back and read the rest. Courtney has out done herself on this one. So many regency romances has the girl/lady as the wounded, needy one who the strong gentleman must save, help or rescue. While the tables are turned in this book and I loved every minute of it. Diana is the sister of a Duke who was raised by her great Aunt Griselda in Scotland not in the ton. She runs wild with Griselda learning all about the outdoors, while helping to raise her pointer dogs. When her brother, Marcus bring her to London for a season she is excited which fades when she learns how fake the ton really is. With a Hugh dowry the only men who want to meet her wants the funds not her. The only man she has every wanted is the brother of her best friends, Lucy and Isabella. Harrington Astley knows his desire for Diana is doomed as Marcus hates him. He played a number of tricks on him during their schools days. Both trying to cover up hidden feelings. This makes it hard as he is married to his sister! When Diana and Harrington met and he finds out how smart she is and know all the political issues he asks for help. Back in London for a new assignment he is lost with his new job. Diane sees this as the best way get him to see what's right in front of him and she purposes marriage so she can help him. Her brother makes him promise a list of things that are unfair and mean. While both Marcus and Harrington may see the marriage as fake Diana is set on making it a lifetime. Wow what these two must go thru and overcome. Harrington has hidden deep secrets that he is sure Diana will hate. She can’t understand why he is always putting himself down. This is a beautiful story of love, passion and understand. Love the ending it is perfect. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. This whole series is not one to be missed.

DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I absolutely adored this book! Harrington and Diana were so perfect for each other! I loved how they lit up any time the other came into the room, and how comfortable they were with each other! Courtney had me laughing out loud a lot during this book, and I really appreciated that! I also really appreciated her notes at the end about her research for this book.

Marcus, the Duke of Trevissick, was a complete sod, but I absolutely loved Diana standing up for herself, and for Harrington! Diana is one of those heroines that I would strive to be like! She’s not interested in the glitz or the glam, and she’ll face anyone head-on, including her brother, if they do anything untoward or gets in the way of her happiness.

Harrington… I love that man, but I also wanted to knock some sense into him! He could be quite stubborn sometimes, but I loved how patient Diana was with him, and how she got him to open up to her.

If you like historical romance with a strong heroine and a hero that doesn’t diminish her shine, this story is a must read! It releases June 12th, and it is the 6th book in The Astley Chronicles by Courtney McCaskill. I believe there’s only one book left in this series, but I could be wrong as I only began reading this series at Book 5, Let Me Be Your Hero. You do not need to read the other books in the series to understand this book. You get to see the other couples, as they are all family, so you may feel inclined to go back and read the previous books in the series, but as I said, you don’t need to to understand this story.

Thank you Courtney for the advance copy, I truly enjoyed reading this story!

Lady Diana Latimer is the sister of a Duke and the biggest heiress in London - but she feels trapped and besieged by fortune hunting fools. She grew up tramping across the moors of Yorkshire and misses the freedom of those days. The only man she’s been interested in during her time in London was the handsome and charming Harrington Astley. Now he’s back after fighting abroad in the army and Diana is keen to explore the connection between them…if her overprotective older brother butts out for a moment.

Diana was a lot of fun - I absolutely loved how no-nonsense she was and how she didn’t suffer fools. She’s independent and resilient, and just so self-assured. She needs all of her formidable fortitude and patience to push for a marriage between her and Harrington, and to convince Harrington that she really does want him.

Harrington was such a sweetheart. He may be charming with a quick, self-deprecating wit but he’s riddled with insecurities. He can’t even imagine a world in which a beautiful, self-possessed woman like Diana would be prepared to marry him. He’s convinced that he’s not good enough for her and that she must want to marry him for adventure and freedom from London.

I loved Harrington and Diana together. He listens to and relies on her (excellent) advice and truly appreciates how strong and resourceful she is. He’s absolutely gone for her and I loved how much he yearned for her, despite thinking she was so far out do his reach. Diana shows Harrington repeatedly how much she wants to be with him, and I appreciated how she pushed for open communication between them. The dynamic in the bedroom was also super steamy and I loved that Diana’s acceptance of his preferences (and enthusiastic participation) helped Harrington accept that part of himself as well.

Courtney McCaskill writes with such humour, making this such fun to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this and definitely need to revisit the earlier books in the series now!

I have loved all “The Astley Cronicles” books but I have been eagerly waiting for this book of Diana’s story and it does not disappoint!

Lady Diana Latimer is the younger sister of Marcus, the Duke of Trevissik. He is very protective of her and now that she has come out into society with the biggest dowry in England, he has his work cut out for him to protect her from fortune hunters and unsuitable men. Diana grew up with her aunt in a remote, rural area. Her aunt taught her how to live simply and independently and to defend herself but she finds herself struggling with her new life in fancy clothes and with the pomp and ceremony of the ton. Her dearest friends are Lucy and Isabella Astley.

Harrington Astley is the second son of the Earl of Cheltenham, a soldier in the army and brother to Lucy and Isabella. He came back to London on a special assignment. He likes Diana very much but Marcus definitely doesn’t like him. He also lacks confidence in himself and his abilities.

Harrington and Diana both have challenges they have to overcome but they are perfect for each other, they just need to convince Marcus before he finds a semi sharp teaspoon to disembowel Harrington with. Harrington needs Diana’s expertise and assistance on his special assignment and Diana wants to help him but it will require action that makes Marcus livid and he doesn’t mind letting Harrington know.

Can Harrington’s personality and Diana’s tenacity solve the assignment and change Marcus’ mind about the couple’s future? You will have to read it to find out!

I really love Courtney McCaskill’s writing style. It’s detailed and well written. There’s humour, drama, surprises and adventure in this beautifully paced book, none of the events were rushed and I was captivated from the start. The story I was most looking forward to reading was a wonderful read. I loved the secondary characters, especially Diana’s aunt who played a surprising role in the happiness of this lovely couple. I’m so happy Diana found her forever love! I’m really looking forward to reading the next book by Courtney McCaskill.

I received a special copy of this book from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. It’s part of a series, The Astley Chronicles, but it is a standalone, so it’s not necessary to know any of the other books to enjoy this one. And it is enjoyable.

I started to write a synopsis of the story, then realized it was too verbose. And unnecessary. I don’t need to tell you the plot. Diana and Harrignton fall in love, despite her brother’s objections and Harrington’s insecurities about his worthiness. Rather than try to convince her brother to accept Harrington, Diana focuses on convincing Harrington he deserves her. And why does a strong, independent woman fall for a man so uncertain of himself? Because he values her opinions and desires her happiness above all else, even if that ultimately means allowing her to leave him.

At a pivotal point in the story, Diana expresses a fear that she has of an stranger in the town where they’re living who seems to be following her. She worries Harrington will insist she stay home to be safe, like Marcus would do, but he makes some suggestions (like carrying a gun) and asks what she thinks. “She had not realized that What do you think? were the most romantic words in the English language.” I found this statement to perfectly encapsulate the relationship between Diana and Harrington, one in which they consider one another equals and value the contributions of each.

I highly recommend this story, which is based on intellectual and emotional connection that naturally leads to sexual attraction. That attraction between them is strong, but it’s clear that physical attraction alone would never be enough for either of them. Both crave the personal qualities that can only be found in one another.

. . . while I liked Diana in the previous books, I wasn't a big fan of Harrington from the beginning. The fact that his kinky disposition is the exact opposite of my kinky disposition (minus the spanking, which I'm really not a fan of except for the odd spank here and there) made this installment very difficult for me to read. I'm always in favor of diversity in my naughty historical romances, and all in all I go by the motto “live and let live” in reality too, because what goes on between other people on a voluntary basis is none of my business, doesn't affect me personally, doesn't make them bad people and is a private matter that has nothing to do with the purely platonic relationships I have with them. Let everyone do what makes them happy. However, since this is very open entertainment literature (which I admit I only read because it's part of a series I've enjoyed so far), I have to read through it when kinks are acted out that I don't condemn, but that don't interest me either. I have to confess that this book is the very first time I've had this problem. I often read erotic literature that serves the pure purpose of eroticism, which satisfies my inclinations accordingly. That's probably the reason why I am not a big fan of this story; despite the fact that its purpose is not purely erotic, it goes so much against my own inclinations, which I live out usualy without shame. If this were pure erotica, I wouldn't have finished the book because the Harringtons of this world just don't fit my ideal of a romantic hero and his kink completely messes with my preferred couple dynamic. Read and enjoy the story if you're not the way I am, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Diana got her story.. this has to be my second favorite book in this series..

Talk about a spicy little number! Lol get the fan y'all.. this book has some spice!

Harrington returns to London after being gone for awhile to find out that he has been voted into parliament and he never expected to be the one responsible for that type of thing it was supposed to be his brother because afterall Harrington is a no good scoundrel with depravities that no one knows about.. and he looks no further for help then the one person he has had a crush on for awhile and she is having none of his insecurities.. and she not only give him the love he deserves but the passion he has always been seeking out..

Diana is just sick and tired of London's society especially the money hungry men and she has become known as the ice queen because of her attitude and her glare, and because of the way she has no issues with saying what's on her mind, when the man she thought was lost to her finally returns to London, she can experience not only love but passion..

She is lifts him up when he needs it the most, she feels beautiful in his arms despite her missing an arm, and what's more they can be themselves with each other no matter what.. these two characters were designed for each other..

This story was incredible to start with and the ending was heart gripping.. and funny!!

I can't wait to see what Courtney has in store next..

I received this book from the author as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no else.

Solid 4⭐️s

First off, I did love this book and despite what other reviews say about how the main characters’ chemistry overshadowed the plot.

What I liked:
❤️ Hidden kink (omg it was so mild, but for the time it was definitely something that people would have kept hidden).
❤️ Completely devoted MMC.
❤️ Strong FMM. Like strong as steel.
❤️ Not the run of the mill plot. Usually a lot of older romances follow a similar plot that feels stale after reading multiple types of romance, but this one was a breath of fresh air thank god.
❤️ The sex - spicy 🥵 so so spicy but it was so refreshing to see two characters trust each other implicitly in the most vulnerable moments in the bedroom or ship hold whatever.
❤️ The romance was solid and ranged from 💐🪻to 🥵🌶️. Perfect.

What I didn’t like:
😒 The depths to which Harrington’s self confidence was sunk was fine at the beginning, and some people may counter with “well it worked with the plot and his sexual fantasies,” etc and so forth but it went on too damn long and frayed my patience. I was like dude just shut the fuck up already and get it through your head. I would have loved to see Diana go “alright I’m leaving for a hot minute and you can work this out bc I’ve done everything” but that’s what I would have done. I guess Diana is the better person 🤣.
😒 Marcus was annoying - I know why he was like that, but a good punch to the nose would have set him straight. Diana should have done that.

All in all I only took a star away for the two dislikes, all the rest I will keep. I really recommend this author and this book!

Romancing the Rifleman

This could have been an exceptional story about Diana and Harrington, but I would have passed on reading it if I had known this was erotic and some BDSM. The warning said smoking hot, but did not mention that. There was one chapter towards the end that I could not even read, it was so nasty. That and the liberal use of the f-bomb destroyed the book for me.
That said, this is a very original story that , aside from what I first wrote, would have been a wonderful story. I loved Diana’s take no prisoners attitude and how she could freeze a person with just one look. I felt for Harrington as I had a self-depreciating outlook on life as well, so I understood some of where he was coming from. Marcus was a bit over the top, relentless in his protection of his sister. Though understandable , especially after reading some of the issues they faced, it still was a bit much. I adored how Harrington stood up to Marcus in one section! Aunt Griselda was a hoot. The story had a bit of non-fiction in it that I found interesting as well. I would have given this a 3.5 rating, if that were an option because of the lack of disclosure. So if you want to read this story, be aware that “smoking hot” means much more than I would have imagined.

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Lady Diana Latimer and Harrington Astley absolutely should not work but they do! Marcus the Duke of Trevissick despises Harrington from some schoolboy pranks!
So courtship was very short and almost scandalous because they couldn’t seem to not almost kiss in public!
Harrington suffers from very low self esteem some stem from his er slightly unusual preferences! He absolutely adores Diana is a take charge tiny little fireball!
Diana loves that he values her opinions and seeks her advice on any and everything!
Marcus extracts a vow from Harrington before their mission that was unfair and difficult to keep!
Just when he and Diana reach a common ground well he’s shipped off on another assignment!
Harrington doesn’t think he deserves good things on his life and Diana definitely wants to show him all the ways he matters!
There are several laugh out loud moments and very poignant ones when Diana realizes he loves her mind just as much as everything else! Bravo you won’t put this one down and stay up way too late!

This couple, Harrington and Diana, were ideal for each other.
Harrington believes he is not worthy of Diana, and she knows that he is and fights for her freedom from her brother. Marcus, Duke of Trevissick, has hated Harrington for all the pranks played on him at school, and is determined to keep the happy couple apart.
Harrington values Diana’s opinions on political matters, and not the amount of her dowry. Diana values Harrington’s wit, charm and devotion to her well-being.
There is a great sense of camaraderie with this couple, and their story with all its up’s and down’s is delightful.
Although this part of a series, you don’t need to read the previous books to understand the characters in this one. It is a standalone book, but if you enjoy stories of a family, then you may want to backtrack, or add the previous books to your TBR pile.
Congratulations Courtney on a fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

oh my, this was so cute, swoony, tender and just what my hopeless romantic heart is hoping for. So loved both MC's but FMC really won me, she knows what and who she wants and gets it. MMC has a lot of insecurities but eventually he got out in and over his head. Loved the side characters except for h's brother cause' he got annoying overtime (tho I know he's just a very overprotective brother).

The romance was so good, these two are undeniably crazy for each other, always horny for each other and supportive of one another. This book was also so hottt. The steam was on another level. Also really liked their backstories, the author sure knows how to weave a great story, pacing was just right and loved that there were a lot of page time between the MC's.

Miss McCaskill is really talented and I know it because this is not the first book from her that really impressed me. Looking forward for more from Miss McCaskill.

Edmund Astley is one of Marcus Latimer’s, Duke of Trevissick, best friends. His younger brother, Lieutenant Harrington Astley, not so much. It seems the younger man was an absolute pest and a half in their school days. Marcus is overprotective of his younger sister, Diana on a good day, and when it becomes apparent that Harrington and Diana are falling for each other, he doubles down. Diana is bright, confident, and outspoken. Harrington lacks self-confidence and feels unworthy of Diana. They are perfect for each other. Harrington wants Diana for the wonderful person he sees in her, not her dowry. Diana encourages him and offers opinions and helps him acclimate to his political duties. This is another well-written, delightful visit with the Astley family. It is filled with humor and the entertaining journey to happily ever after for another of the scandalous siblings. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Lady Diana Latimer wants Harrington Astley, an army lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade. Just back in London, he finds out he's a member of Parliament, then ordered to help the Foreign Office.
The biggest obstacle is Diana's brother Marcus, the Duke of Trevissick, who opposes their relationship. Diana defies her brother and marries Harrington to help on his assignment for the Foreign Office. He's not confident that Diana wants to remain married. Her interfering brother continues to try to break up their marriage, but Diana won't give in. A very strong young lady must convince her husband he's worthy to be her husband and demands her brother to stop interfering.
Erotic descriptive sex.

Lady Diana Latimer is intelligent, honest, witty, and the owner of an absurdly large dowry.
Lieutenant Harrison Astley is charming, a Rifleman for The Crown’s Regent and saddled with a large, multi-layered inferiority complex.
Because of Harrison’s childhood pranks on Diana’s brother, the Duke of Trevissick (Marcus), is dead set against Harrison courting or even speaking or dancing with Diana. However, Harrison is the only gentleman to make Diana feel seen, heard and valued. Can they overcome her brother’s objections, Harrison’s self-abasement and other twists and turns to be together? This is a wonderfully emotional and satisfying story of two wounded souls who find each other and fight for their HEA.

I really loved this book! Funny, but with a little dose of angst that was the icing on the cake. Diana is the QUEEN of the book, a strong, bold and independent woman with the patience of a saint! And she needs it, with a interfering and frankly irritating brother (I would have strangled him so many times!) and a love interest who suffers of a terrible case of unworthiness syndrome! Poor Harrington, endearing and sweet, but frustratingly stubborn… If it weren’t for Diana and her wonderful aunt Griselda we wouldn’t have had a HEA at all!
Gorgeously written, with great characters, like all McCaskill’s books!

As always with this series, this book was a delight. I didnt think any book could top Edward and Elissa, but this had me gleefully kicking my feet. I loved Harrington and Diana so much. Eager golden retriever with a wide praise kink, falling for a smart, sharp tongued heroine, and then loving her because shes smart and snarky and sharp tongued? Yes thank you, more please. And even the possible problems they had were handled SO WELL. no major miscommunication, just their own insecurities being occasionally loud, which they handled by being adults and being vulnerable? theres a reason this series is my favorite romance series.

I loved this book, but then again, I am a big fan of McCaskill's writing.

I loved the heroine, Lady Diana who is fearless and has a spine despite being born with a deformity, she doesn't let it stop her. Harrison Astley is a charming, witty, jokester who needed to stop being so hard on himself at times. I wanted to shake him sometimes because he failed to see his many redeeming qualities.

If you like a fake marriage plot, spy elements, wonderful characters all wrapped up in a steamy story, then you have tp read this .

I received an arc via the author and this opinion is my own and review is submitted voluntarily.

A bit of a slow start to this story, but once you get to about chapter 12 it picks up and the rest is just an absolute delight to read. I loved that Diana was such a strong willed female and ends up being the perfect match for Harrington. I disliked how harshly Harrington was on himself, and I think that distracted a bit from the story for me. However, their chemistry sizzles on the pages and when Harrington finally admits what he wants most and Diana delivers - holy smokes was that a steamy scene. Truly a great story in the Astley collection and I'm already looking forward to Lucy's story next.

2.5⭐️

This series has been hit or miss, and unfortunately, this one was more on the miss side. Each book has included some sort of mystery or crime to solve, but it just wasn’t working for me this time. The whole spy plot was flimsy at best and took away page time that could have been better spent developing a stronger emotional connection between Diana and Harrington.

Speaking of Harrington, I got so sick of his lack of confidence and “I’m not worthy” attitude—although no one was more insufferable than Diana’s brother, Marcus. Even though this isn’t a book I’ll revisit, I will continue to read the rest of the series.
