Jack Gentil underestimated the level of suffering he would witness in an American firefighter’s uniform. The proverbial curtain of society was ripped back, revealing pain he was unable to turn away from. When those demons began to perforate his psyche, he embarked on a journey to save his own life.
Kinder gives us a gripping and raw insight into the life of a first responder, an opportunity to see through an invaluable lens that few will ever experience first hand. More importantly, it’s a story of hope and redemption.
“This is not who you are. This is what the job has done to you.”
Any fan of the ‘Behind the Shield’ podcast and James Geering’s work will fly through this authentic and profound book. Here are some of my favorite quotes from ‘Kinder.’
“Guilt is the enemy of healing.”
“Don’t ask what’s wrong with you, ask what happened to you?”
“It was a cycle of trauma - hurt people hurt people.”
“We forget to let ourselves feel again after. That’s where we get in trouble.”
I hope ‘Kinder’ opens first responders’ minds to therapy while reassuring those wearing the uniform to know that they can heal and still be effective operators.
This was a well written story that exposes the daily trauma that builds within first responders. It also delves into trauma caused by wars and how that is passed down to family members.
Absolutely enjoyed the book! Geering did an excellent job of telling the stories with the story! I encourage everyone to take the time to read it, and then pass it along to someone else!
