Tainted Blood

Rate this book

In the third Generation V novel, Fortitude Scott proves that working with family can be deadly...

Former film student Fortitude Scott is finally gainfully employed. Unfortunately, said employment happens to be with a group of sociopathic vampires—his family. And as much as Fort is loath to get too deep into the family business, when his brother, Chivalry, is temporarily unable to run the territory, it's up to Fort to keep things under control.

So when the leader of a powerful faction of shifters turns up murdered, Fort finds himself tracking down a killer while navigating dangerous rivalries, longtime grudges, and hidden agendas. Even with the help of his foxy kitsune sidekick, Suzume, he'll need to pull out all the stops to hunt for the paranormal assassin.

But as he calls on fairies, witches, and ghouls for help, he discovers that the problem is much bigger than a single dead werebear. The supernatural community is preparing for a...

As the author, I'd say that I'm possibly the second-most biased source that you could possibly locate -- the most biased being the author's mother. With that in mind, I give this book a full five stars, and only regret that I cannot add extra stars for how much I love this book.

It was awfully fun to write, and if it is merely half as much fun to read, then you guys are in for some fun. Can't wait to see what everyone thinks in November!

Once again, M.L. Brennan reminds me why this is one of my favorite urban fantasy series right now! I simply love how the Generation V books break so many of the genre’s rules.

First off, forget about immortal vampires that ooze sexuality from every single attractive pore on their flawless runway model bodies, because here we have Fortitude Scott, a vampire protagonist who is very much an underdog and is as down-to-earth as they come. And how ‘bout those family dynamics? Where else can you find a book in which the mother and siblings of said vampire protagonist have such a huge impact on his everyday life? I’ve always enjoyed the roles that Madeline, Prudence and Chivalry play in the development of Fort’s character, but this third book is where the author really drives that point home. The story here is, after all, about the blood ties that bind.

Unlike the first two books which both started off with a healthy dose of humor, a dark shroud of sadness hangs over book three’s introduction, because it is revealed that Chivalry’s ailing wife has finally passed away. The loss leaves Chivalry in no shape to attend his duties, meaning it’s up to Fort to step up and fill his older brother’s shoes. It’s a tough job keeping checks on all the supernatural denizens living in his mother’s territory, but Fort manages swimmingly with the help of Suzume, his kitsune sidekick and friend-who-he-wishes-is-more-than-just-a-friend.

Then everything goes to hell when the leader of a faction of bear shapeshifters turns up brutally murdered. It’s Fort’s first time handling an investigation and of course his family is no help (his mother Madeline’s sagely advice pretty much boils down to “Just handle it dammit, find a patsy if necessary”), but still Fort is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery and bring the true killer to justice. He just hopes he’s not in way over his head on this one.

Tainted Blood and the story of Fort’s first solo mission on his family’s business is definitely not to be missed! The twists and turns of the investigation had me on my toes, and as always the brilliant banter between the dynamic duo of Fort and Suze continued to have me chuckling all the way through.

But there are also a few other things I felt this book did extremely well, which I want to highlight. For one thing, you’ll definitely be floored by Brennan’s fascinating and unique take on the paranormal world and its creatures, an approach which has become her signature style. Her first book Generation V introduced us to the nitty-gritty details of the vampire life cycle, while her second book Iron Night portrayed elves in a way that I know will make me never look at Legolas the same way again. I can always depend on Brennan to have a cool supernatural race or two up her sleeve, and quite honestly, I would expect nothing less from an author who features the awesomeness of kitsune in her books! This time around, we get up close and personal with shapeshifters in the form (no pun intended) of werebears. Just, ah, don’t call them that to their faces, unless you want to risk getting your own clawed off.

What I really like are the checks and balances in the world of these books, providing an explanation as to why we puny humans aren’t overrun a million times over yet by all these supernatural beings that are so much more powerful than us. Every creature has a weakness to go with a strength. Brennan’s vampires, for example, are not immortal, and though the process is much slower, they can and will die of old age just like anything else. And while elves do enjoy the luxury of immortality, they are so violent and bloodthirsty that they’ve pretty much fought themselves to the brink of extinction, with problems of infertility and inbreeding to boot. Witches have powers that make them extraordinary talented healers, but they’re also the most isolated and scattered group because any large concentration of witches in one area can stir up bad juju and mass hysteria in nearby human populations. Details such as these lend Fortitude Scott’s world a touch of realism which is not always present in UF, and it’s something I don’t think is appreciated enough.

I also want to take it back to family dynamics, because this is another area where Tainted Blood excelled. Familial love can be a tricky thing to tackle, especially when it comes to so-called “monsters”. Fort may be a relatively harmless vampire trying to hold on to his human side as long as possible, though the same cannot be said of his mother and older siblings. But Madeline, Chivalry and Prudence are such fascinating characters simply because they love Fort and are fiercely protective of him, only they show it in their own very different and sometimes unconventional ways. This is brought to the forefront in Tainted Blood, when Fort’s interactions with each of his family members produce a wide range of emotional results. Perhaps for the first time, he catches a glimpse of weakness in his mother, a darkness in his brother, and – probably the most shocking revelation of all – a nice side to Prudence. Nothing is ever black and white, and I loved that about this book.

So if an urban fantasy with actual deep, meaningful and complex relationships sounds good to you, look no further than this series. And speaking of relationships, if you have been following these books and are rooting for Fortitude and Suzume in the romance department, you might be in for a real treat too!

Bottom line, fans of urban fantasy need to check out this series, and current fans MUST read Tainted Blood. There are significant developments brewing, and with all this foreshadowing of Madeline’s inevitable fate, I have a feeling this books marks the beginning of a turning point. We may be on the cusp of something huge. What can I say, but bring on the next one!

Bas me interesuje kako ce se dalje prica razvijati.

Preporuka i dalje za ovaj serijal.

*MY Thoughts*

Tainted Blood is the THIRD installment in the Generation V series by author M.L. Brennan. Brennan's protagonist is 20 something Fortitude Scott who has been thrown into the middle of his families drama over the previous novels. It has been a month since Fort was nearly killed by his sister, Prudence who was trying to trigger his full transition. Fort is still trying to understand what it means to be a vampire, but hasn't fully come to gripes with his fate. Now, with his brother, Chivalry out of action due to losing his wife, Fort is expected to pick up his slack.

Warning: Violence and gore

My Rating: 8/10 Stars

My Summary:

While Chivalry is spending time with his dying wife, Fortitude’s been put in charge of the family business. Along with his new partner the Kitsune Suzume. It’s been mostly quiet for the first month he’s been in charge, but now the head werebear (don’t call them that) has been murdered and it’s up to Fort to investigate.

My Review:

I enjoyed the growing relationship between Fort and Suzume. They trust each other more now and confide in one another. And joke of course. (I want a friend like Suzume!)

I like how in each book we learn more about this world. Here we not only learned about the werebears, but also a little bit about the ghouls who run funereal homes and do autopsy’s.

There was of course still plenty of family drama. I didn’t like Chivalry as much, but I feel like I understand Prudence better. (Yep she’s psycho)

It was strange that Fort had the family behind him for once and all of their resources. (Which surprisingly didn’t help much) I didn’t think this mystery was as well done as the previous ones, but that could be because I figured it out right away. The ride to get there was still really fun. I just love these books!

The fourth book, Dark Ascension will be published on August 4th 2015. I can’t wait!

If you like Generation V, I recommend Hold my Closer Necromancer by Lish McBride. (Or if you like Necromancer, Generation V) They’re quite different, but the tone is the same.

One Sentence Summary: Reluctant Baby Vampire continues to be dragged into Mafia-like family affairs and winds up investigating the death of local were-bear chieftain.

Tropes: Murder Mystery, Family Drama, Succession Crisis(es). Also slow-burn wooing.

Quotes:
"The modern day metrosexual would be completely unprepared for one of my brother's discussions about picking the right colors for your skin tone."

Squeeworthy Bits: That entire conversation between Suze and Keiko, with Farid and Fort watching out for explosions in the background. Every time Prudence and/or Chivalry show up on screen- if they are not being hilariously obtuse and grossing the heck out of Fort, they are being deliciously creepy and delighting me. That one scene where Prudence shows Fort how to store blood for later use and he wishes he'd been reincarnated as a dung beetle instead of a vampire. Every scene with googly eyes, because Suze is fun.

Eyerollworthy Bits:I'm not a big fan of the romance. I like them both as individual characters, but there's nothing that really makes Suze/Fort a couple I'd root for. On the other hand, I also have nothing against them, so meh.

Verdict: Yet another funny, solid installment in a series that's progressively making me more and more upset about it being cancelled.

M.L. Brennan delivers again!

My high expectations for the third installment of the American Vampire-series were completely met.

The mystery of the book - the murder of the leader of the were-bears - is well done and has some pretty unexpected twists.

As in the first and second book it are however the 'family parts' that make this book so awesome. We learn more about the sisters of Suzume; Fort and Suzume have some fun together - Suzume's banter and pranks are great as always - and with some emotional/creepy scenes we gain further insight in the complex personality of Prudence, Fort and Chivalry. Especially these parts are amazingly good written.

The whole story hints at a significant chance in the near future, and I can't wait for book nr. 4.

Oh, Fort..... You adorable, clueless dork. :)

Ok, if you haven't jump aboard Generation V ship and you love UF- you are missing out. In a genre of bad-ass heroines and Harry Dresden look-alikes, Fortitude Scott continues to be unique hero material. :)

So, last time we saw Fort he was taking over family business of enforcing his mother's rules from Chivalry, who needed some time with his dying wife. Unsurprisingly, that is how Tainted Blood starts: with Buhmika's funeral.
Chivalry still needs time off to mourn,so Fort is sent to investigate the murder of karhu of the metsän kunigas (that's PC term for leader of werebears). As Fort looks into possible suspects and clues, it becomes clear that various fractions of sups think that Fort is one Scott they want on their side.
I loved the way Brennan made this world larger in previous novel, showing us different supernaturals in Providence. It's not just that she dipped into different mythologies, even some we are not used to see so often (like rusalka, which is russian take on mermaids), but she also in a very amusing and clever way combined these creatures with modern life..like witches who are usually in the business of medicine or ghouls.:)
For me the best and most intriguing arc that's stretching through entire series is of course, Scott family dynamic. In this novel it went even further because we got to see other side of Madeline, Prudence and especially Chivalry. If story got complicated in second book, here it was tangled and turned around completely... Our baby vamp is in for some wake up call when it comes to being a vampire.
Characterization in this plot arc is excellent... every book we discover something new about Scotts and i feel like we barely scratched the surface.
There is one general theme that's waved into this novel: it deals with difficulties of relationship between different species with accent on human/supernaturals. We have that with Keiko (Suze's sister), Chivalry and his wives, Dan and his boyfriend, Bears and their husbands... It's like Fort gets to see how it's working (or not working) with all of them, and it brings a different more serous perspective on the fact he wants to date Suze.
Which brings me to romance: one thing that's left hanging in the air from Iron Night is Fort admitting to Suze how he feels about her. Suze is being Suze, she is a trickster, a playful, teasing kitsune you can't really woo if she doesn't want to have anything with you. And this why I think Fort was great about this: he came clean and he stuck to it, carefully waiting, not pressuring, but he never left any doubt to Suze about his feelings. It's still Fort we got to know (he's still blushing and diverting eyes every time one of the female shifters lose clothes after shifting back for example), but he knows what he wants and once he said it, he doesn't try to downplay it.

Star is chucked off because main plot- mystery about karhu murder-was somewhat weak. It dragged at the beginning a bit, but mainly, it was a very small group of possible suspects who acted in a cliche ways for mystery. I pegged the killer pretty much as soon as Fort and Suze came to murder scene. It also, doesn't help that entire family intrigue was particularly interesting, so I was pulled into that completely and bears didn't interest me as much.
There are some very interesting questions left to be answered about Fort's transition and somehow I feel that Fort got himself into trouble that would prove to be a problem with his family in the future, so I am crazy relieved we have fourth book to look forward to.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Generation V is a series that I love and I was, as always, very impatient for this new volume. How not to fall under the spell of this anti-hero and Suze, this fun fox? They are both awesome and I had a great pleasure to follow them once again.

Fort has to manage the territory of his mother, especially since that the Chivalry’s wife is dead. But now a new story falls on him and not the least … In fact, the leader of a bear clan is found murdered and it is up to our young vampire and his acolyte Suze to find the person responsible. His sister Prudence would tell you that taking a random person and make an example would suffice but it is not how Fortitude works. Oh no, because he is determined to find the culprit whatever it might cost. However, this case is much more complicated than expected, evidences all revolve around a single person, but is it a trap? I admit that I was curious to see who the culprit of the story was, because, like our hero, it’s actually quite difficult for us to really know who the killer is. All names will pass through our head, changing and eventually I think that the author has perfectly managed to lead us by the nose. But I can tell you that in any case I really enjoyed this resolution and the reason behind this.

But it’s not just that because the decline of their mother is felt throughout the community and clans are all trying to organize themselves to see what would be most profitable for them thereafter. Surprisingly, a number of them are already turning to Fort, trying to feel the ground to see what can happen. But I confess that although I hope that Madeline will stay there much longer, I’m curious to see what will happen next as well. Even Chivalry is not really involved in the story, we also have the opportunity to see him several times, as well as Prudence elsewhere. After what had happened in the previous novel with his sister, I was eager to see how the two would behave and it is true that like Fort, I was surprised to see how the young woman cares for him. But it is true that Prudence is a very complex character, and it is very difficult to understand or predict how she will react to situations.

Anything else? Oh yes because Fort evolves much in this novel, especially since the beginning of his transformation. We see the changes here and it’s true that I was surprised to see what it would produce on his character. We feel bad with him, we feel guilty and we remain impressed by his new faculties. But in addition to this, we also have Suze. Ah I love this fox! She’s great and her actions and conversations are always humorous. Since the end of the previous book, I was curious to see how the « relationship » between the two would evolve and I must say that I was conquered by all!

So yes, I can tell you that once again I had a great time with this new story and I can only recommend you to try the series if you’re looking for an original and different vampires story. You will fall in love with Fort, Suze and his family and you will not want to let them go! I’m really excited to read more adventures with our heroes now (as always!).

Fortitude Scott, the youngest from the Scotts vampire clan is now taking charge with 'family business' of controlling their territory after his older brother Chivalry, stepped away for temporarily mourning. And this time, Fortitude, with the help from the kitsune, Suzume, must deal with the murder of the karhu (leader) of metsän kuniga clan (or werebear)...

It took me slightly longer to get in tune with the 3rd book of M.L. Brennan's "Generation V" series; however, once it was going, it GOT going! The reason for my taking more time was probably because I didn't remember much from the previous two books. Not the author's fault -- when it comes to details, my memory sucks. But once I got the point where Fortitude was in charge of finding the murderer of karhu, I was immediately gripped. I always enjoy urban fantasy series with touch of mystery/suspense -- so I was invested with how Fort and Suzume investigated the death.

What I love so much about this series is that the vampires are not portrayed in glorifying charm. The vampires here are viscious and dangerous. In this sense, Fort is the anomaly. He's still trying to hang on his humanity -- he's a vegan vampire, for cryin' out loud -- which makes it quite interesting to see how he will deal with his older brother and sister. Prudence was definitely the scariest -- but after this book, I thought Chivalry also had his own demon, which mostly related on how he consumed his own need for blood. This kind of dynamic in vampirism is what make the series a keeper for me.

There was a progress in Fort and Suze's relationship at this point; and I'm looking forward to many more mischief that Suze would play on Fort.

I am definitely in for book #4!!

Favorite Quote: “Life is always easier when your opponents are idiots.”

Fortitude Scott, a twenty something vampire, is attempting to handle his transition from human to full vampire with as much grace as possible but it’s hard when he’s unsure exactly what’s happening and his family isn’t exactly racing to help him. His need to hang on to his humanity defines his life but Fort is finding it harder and harder to maintain his morality when his needs are becoming more demanding. Fort is also becoming more active in the family business while his brother Chivalry is ‘indisposed’.

When the Scott family’s presence is requested to investigate the murder of the local were clan leader, Fort is sent to handle the job and calls in his crush and kitsune sidekick, Suzume, to help him. But nothing ever comes easy for Fort and soon he finds himself neck deep in long held grudges, hidden agendas, and dangerous rivalries. But the real danger is the coming shift in power in the supernatural community…a shift that has everything to do with his family.

This series continues to impress. Brennan takes supernatural lore and vampire legend of old, giving it a much needed modern updating. Forget sparkling misunderstood monsters and their emotional angst, these vampires aren’t looking for true love or understanding…they rule their their lives and those around them with an iron fist and love every single minute of it. Eclectic and entertaining with it’s thinly veiled violent tendencies and dark comedic undertones, the star of this show is it’s protagonist, Fortitude Scott, and his reluctant journey towards his destiny.

“Yes, irritating isn’t it? I told you Chivalry won’t feed until he finds himself a new wife. [...] Now you’re starting to see why that behavior is ridiculous.”

“Not feeding makes you want ham?”

Tainted blood picks up not long after Iron Night. Chivalry’s wife has passed and Fort finds himself at a loss while Chivalry occupied with his grief and finding a new wife. Having been shadowing his brother in learning his business affairs, Fort finds the Scott’s methods of controlling their territory to be medievil at best and tries his best to mediate quarrels and problems so his sister Prudence isn’t called into “handle the situation.” A strong bridge book, Brennan uses the main conflict to branch out and set up new storylines.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

When I finished with TAINTED BLOOD, all I could think was "Brennan did it again!" TAINTED BLOOD is that spectacular combination of great characters, action, and sexual tension that makes a reader keep flipping the pages, desperate to know what comes next.

One thing I particularly enjoy about Brennan's writing is her ability to write such complex characters. Certain characters manage to be both repulsive and sympathetic, and the dichotomy is done really well. Prudence, for example - I want her to be my bestie on a few occasions, except when I remember that she's kind of a sociopath who has no problems killing anybody who bothers her. Plus, the vampires continue to be different than any other I've read in any urban fantasy, and though sometimes repulsive, they're also fascinating. We continue to be introduced to other characters and creatures in the world, as well, and it's always fun to learn more about the world.

I also love the tension between Suzume and Fort. The romance between the two is anything but typical, and Suzume's pranks are a highlight of the story. Suzume's (and the other kitsune's) antics offer an outright sense of humor, balancing the action and drama from the mystery.

TAINTED BLOOD is an excellent third book in a series, and it only left me eager for more. If Fort's growth throughout books one through three is any indication of the masterful transitions that Brennan can take her characters through, then I can't wait to see where she takes him in book four, scheduled to come out in 2015.

It was good...and that is the problem. It was good, while previous books were awesome. I enjoyed it, but it did not grab me as book 1 and 2 did. So while I liked it, it did make me fear for book 4. If book 4 is also good, well sometimes that is a dealbreaker for me. I need an awesome thrown in here and there. Sometimes good is all I need, while other times not. Do not ask me how. I have no idea. I can read an entire series where all the books are good, but not awesome. And then I can read a series and go all eh after one is just good...

Moving on.

So beta Fort grew in book 2. But here, hello! You are a vampire. You know that shit already. And now he was all, I will have to kill peeps? Well not really. I have to drink blood? Get over it you vegetarian idiot. I did feel that weakness that I liked in book 1 and 2 was a bit too much here. Being kind is good, just, being too kind can be too much.

I read the book fast, it was one of those, read in a day kind of books. I liked that there were Finnish bears. I liked this quote about Finns holding grudges (have held one for 15 years, not forgiving that ahole). Suze was fun and weird. His family was bloodthirsty, I really like Prudence now, she is a sociopath.

And now some will think I did not like the book. It was GOOD! I just expected awesome and exceptions suck ass. I will read the next and hope for more, I will read the one after that but hopefully it will be back on track by then. When you expect awesome you can not settle for less.

I love this series.

Brennan's vampires exist is a thoroughly f'ed up world, with an equally messed up family dynamic. This time around, Fort and Suze have to solve the murder of the leader of the werebears, deal with Fort's increasingly vampiric nature, and the implications of the frailty of the Scott family matriarch. While I love Fort and Suze's ever evolving relationship, it's the almost-vampire's interactions with his older sister Prudence that were among my favorite parts of the book. She's terrifying, but she also loves her little brother, in her own totally inhuman way. I really can't wait to see what happens next. This was a fantastic book three, and while it is setting things up for more hazards in Fort's near future, it also didn't feel like a middle book or set-the-stage book for me. We got character progression, a conclusion to the main issue, and more trouble on the horizon. Just what I was looking for, and it means I will be hitting that pre-order button for book 4.

Note: After book 2 came out, I posted an interview with M.L. Brennan over on Stellar Four. It sums up in a slightly spoilery way how much I love this series and why: http://www.stellarfour.com/2014/03/ge...

I love Tainted Blood. I hate spoilers, so I seldom read reviews before I read a book, unless the author is unknown to me. I happened to read a less than wonderful review of Tainted Blood last week. Having finished Tainted Blood, I am certain the reviewer should reread Generation V and Iron Night, then reread Tainted Blood. Fort is the way he is due to Madeline's choices in creating and raising him. Brennan is not looking to pull a rabbit out of a hat and give Fort an unrealistic happily ever after. The winds of change are obviously blowing in all three books, and vampires must adapt or die. I am putting my soapbox away now....

Very bad things happen; some of them to very bad people, and some to nice people. Suzume is obsessed with googly eyes. Fort continues to be kept in the dark about his transition while dealing with the side effects of transitioning. Prudence is punished. Chivalry's mourning period is shorter than I expected. Madeline confuses me, as she continues to keep Fort, her great experiment, in the dark, but she seems to expect him to be a 'normal' vampire. Fort's new roommate is awesome, but often nauseating to a vegetarian (Fort and me). I love Tainted Blood. Book #4 cannot come too soon.

For a series that generally made my eyes roll upon first reading the concept, these books are some of the more entertaining reads I've committed to in a long while.

While the general concept isn't anything outside the norm for Urban Fantasy- a vampire attempting to solve supernatural crimes with a host of other nonhuman characters- Brennan manages to set herself apart almost solely through tone and humor. So many books in the genre are committed to the idea of being grim, and dark, and serious. That might work well in certain scenarios, but it's almost entirely overplayed, and it makes this series a bit of a ray of sunshine (although that might be a poor metaphor when applied to a series of vampire books). In Tainted Blood, even when conflicts are grim and/or serious, the tone never shifts too far from the lightness and playful humor that Brennan seems skilled at producing. The witty banter between Fort and Suze will generally always leave a smile on your face, and the interplay with the other vampires provides a nice contrast that prevents the book from being overwhelmed with quirkiness and pop culture references.

All in all, this series continues to be an incredibly pleasant surprise, and one I look forward to continuing next year with the planned fourth book.

The case being investigated here, the murder of the werebear leader, was interesting. What makes these books for me, however, is Fort maneuvering the ins and outs of the vampire politics of his world. It leaves me wondering about the changes coming if Fort indeed becomes the leader of his family after his full transition. He is far more modern than the other (very old) vamps in his family.

Good book in a good UF series. Brennan has a different and interesting take on vampires, and of the other paranormal inhabitants of this world. One thing I would like too see in future books, though, is an integration of humans into the plotlines of the authors world. It seems just a bit implausible that humans outnumber vampires 1000 to 1 in these books, yet so far there is rare interaction, and humans don't even get mentioned much except as food or servants.

There are so many things to love about this book, and the entire series. The differences between the Scott kids for one. And the interaction between Fort and Prudence is priceless.

The fact that each book is a little mystery for Fort and his shapeshifter girlfriend Susume to solve keeps things interesting.

And perhaps the thing I enjoy the most is the humor. Is there really anything better in a book that already has wonderful characters, and a great story, than an author that can make you laugh out loud while reading?

So happy a 4th book is on the way!!!

Very entertaining. The feeling of New England is captured very well. I like background history on the family as well. Can't wait for the next book.

Oh Fort, you fool, you are so doomed if you ever lose your street smart kitsune bud, because you know nothing, Fort Snow. But I will continue to love reading this series!

Do I love this series or what! Let me count the ways in which I love it. Well, firstly, I seem to have gobbled up the first three books in fairly short order, secondly, it’s got two very likable leads – one of which is a very cool Kitsune, thirdly, it’s fast paced, action packed and pretty funny, fourthly it brings something a little new to what could be deemed as a genre that is becoming a bit jaded, fifthly – what the hell, do you need any more, really – a Kitsune people!!

(Note: obligatory spoiler statement – I do try and avoid spoilers but it you’re new to this series it’s probably best not to start reading here! So, for the record ‘I told you so!’). The series revolves primarily around a young, not-yet-grown-into-his-teeth vampire called Fortitude Scott and his family, it’s set in our world but populated with supernatural types that most of us regular folks are thankfully oblivious to – at this point we’ve only been introduced to a number of these supes and this installment focuses on the werewolves. At the start of the story the Head of the local werewolf pack is murdered and the Scotts are called in to investigate! Fort has to step up to take on the task as he’s currently covering the role for his brother who is somewhat distracted. I may have mentioned this but the Scott’s come across a little like the Mob of the fantasy underworld. They, ahem, offer ‘protection’ to the others and closely regulate their territory to prevent action that draws too much attention to their kind!

Now, I’m not going to go specifically into the plot here – you have your basic investigation taking place and the usual drama that follows Fort and Suzume around as huge critters chase them around the woods! The storyline is fast paced and compelling as ever but more importantly than that (to me at least) is the underlying shift in balance that seems to be taking place between the Scotts and the rest of the supernaturals together with the change in the family dynamic. Clearly, things are going to come to a head and in this installment you can feel the tension not only within the family, where there will clearly be a struggle for dominance as certain events transpire, but also in the community where lines in the dirt are already being drawn.

Let’s face it, some of the supernaturals who fall under the Scott’s control aren’t happy with their lot and with a change looking imminent they’re keen to set out their stalls early. Fort is young, he isn’t set in his ways and he’s clearly willing to listen and, more than that, sympathise with people who feel they have an axe to grind. It’s going to be very interesting to read No.4 in the series. There is definitely the potential for so many things, in so many ways, to just blow up and become either completely unmanageable or to cause a major rift!

What I particularly like about this series is the way the author is introducing us to things at the same pace as Fort. It’s like we’re all learning about his world with him and I think this is so clever to be honest. Importantly, she establishes a link with the reader and Fort (and Suzume) really early on and then she builds with each installment providing another little piece of his world. On reflection, it’s easy now to look back at Fort’s early impressions of his family and think that he’s perhaps an unreliable narrator when it comes to his family – but this is based more on the fact that Fort has been largely brought up in the care of regular humans, he hasn’t spent much time with his vampire family and consequently he’s only just learning about them and about the boundaries – just like us! Fort is definitely a character who will grow on you without a doubt. Suzume – won’t grow on you – it won’t be necessary for any growing-on at all, you’ll simply read her and love her immediately. She’s just fun, confident, cool, cocky – what can I say – she’s an excellent work of fiction!

Anyway, that’s it for me. If you like urban fantasy and you’re looking for a new series give Generation V a shot. Credit where it’s due: I have the lovely Mogsy at The Bibliosanctum to thank for putting me onto this series!

Tainted Blood is the third book in what quickly became one of my most favorite Urban Fantasy series. The Generation V / American Vampire series by ML Brennan features a compelling hero, an incredible and hilarious almost-heroine and the most unique vampire-based world I have come across in a long while. It is an example of superior UF writing and this latest installment is just as amazing as the first two.

Thanks to his brother being preoccupied with other matters, Fort is expected to step up and take care of supernatural issues that come up in his mother’s territory. In ML’s world, Vampires rule and they decide what supernatural creatures can and cannot do. When a gruesome murder is discovered among the werebears, Fort is sent to investigate on behalf of the Scott household. The thing is, Fort is not as aggressive as his brother and is nowhere near as fear-striking as his sister. Yet he has a job to do. It’s very interesting to watch him try to figure out who he really is, how he fits into his family and how he is to handle the situations thrown at him.

I enjoyed Fort’s growth in this book and am really looking forward to seeing how his decisions from this book play into the next. He is such a layered and wonderful character. A little lost yet full of heart (even though vampires usually aren’t known for that), quite innocent in so many ways yet very intelligent. He is an absolute joy to read.

Speaking of joys to read, Suzume is so awesome! Fort likes-likes her but she still has not made up her mind about him. They are such an amazing team! And her dialogue and some of her actions are so funny! But there is much heart to her too – she’s just not as ready to share it as Fort is.

The story is as complicated and gripping as it always is in this series. There is murder and fighting and plotting to murder and fight…never a dull moment. But there are quite a few sad undertones in this installment too. The world is expanded on a bit as well. We are introduced to some new creatures and we get lessons on the history or some others. ML’s imagination and how she envisions her paranormal beings is so extraordinary. And she translates all that onto the page flawlessly.

Fort has a bit of alone time with his mother and each of his siblings in this book and those moments are definitely noteworthy. Just when you think you know where each member of the family stands when it comes to Fort and to their place in this world, you find out you may be wrong a little bit. You glimpse at sides of Prudence and Chivalry that you didn’t think you would see and Fort’s mother…it’s almost sad to see what she is becoming. I feel the need for tissues coming soon enough in the series…

And one more thing I must ‘say’ about this book… *does happy dance but won’t tell you why*

Overall, Tainted Blood was an exceptional installment for this extraordinary series. If you are a fan of urban fantasy and have yet to read this series, I dare you to try it and not fall in love with Fort, Suze and the world ML has created. And if you already read this series, you will NOT be disappointed in this latest book. It really is urban fantasy written the way it should be: smart, captivating and thoroughly entertaining.

Still liking this series...enough to go ahead and order the next one despite some resolution in the main-arc romance.

This is Urban Fantasy with vampires, were-animals, and some particularly blood-thirsty fae. There's nothing really too unique here, except for some biology-of-vampires stuff, but what draws me into this series are the skillful murder mystery plots woven together with novel-spanning story arcs as well as some snarky, geeky humor.

The main character uses caramel to draw a Star Trek federation symbol on his pancakes when he's trying to cheer himself up. He's also turning into a vampire and is dealing with sudden bloodlusts. He also is in love with a prankster of a kitsune who glues googly eyes to improbable things all over his apartment.

And he's dealing with a were-bear murder.

You could read this novel without having read the prior two books-- buy really, why would you want to? Without reading the first one, the slow, horrific realizations Fortitude has about the nature of his brother's (Chivalry) marriages, as well as the not-as-benevolent-as-he-thought dictatorship of his mother over the various supernatural species wouldn't be as interesting. And why miss the slow burn of Fort and Suzume's attraction across novels?

Fort-Suzume shippers finally get thrown a bone in this book, and delightfully it doesn't descend into shmaltzy, shoopy (except for Fort's grin) romantic drivel. Both characters stay true to themselves.

Entertaining urban fantasy for great escapist reading from the hands of a highly competent writer.
