Flames cast an ominous orange glow against the night sky as a barn catches fire, consuming everything from the hay bales to the victim bound and left to die.
News of the murder sparks fear in the small community of Cherry Creek, and that fear only grows when the arsonist leaves a calling card belonging to a killer everyone believed was long dead.
The Dragonfly mysteriously disappeared from the local asylum decades ago, stepping out of existence and into legend. The story draws the attention of Noelle McKenzie, a local author, and she digs into details from the past while Captain Derek Dempsey searches for evidence in the present.
But there’s more going on than either of them suspect, and this threat doesn’t just come knocking; it kicks in the door with a wicked plan and a lit match. If they don’t stop the arsonist soon, there may not be anything left of Cherry Creek to save.
Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope. Writing has been a slowly blossoming dream inside her for most of her life until one day it spilled out onto the pages that would become her first published book.
Another wonderful 5-star read from C.C. Warrens! This is book 2 in the Cherry Creek Mystery series. While I think enough background information is provided to be able to read this one on its own (and the story itself stands alone), I think this one is probably best read after Firefly Diaries as it gives greater character depth and insight, as well as relationship understanding. Also, there are spoilers for Firefly Diaries in this one, so this series is best read in order. And though I'm typically partial to first books in a series (Criss Cross is still my favorite of the author's Holly series), I think I liked this book better than book 1! This book picks up a little after book 1 ended with Noelle trying to come up with ideas for her next book (I do love when authors write about authors!). When she starts seeing someone who resembles a legend turned town ghost-story hanging around and multiple arson attacks are happening, and a stalker starts coming around, Noelle struggles to keep her home a safe haven for Skyler.
This book hit the ground running and did not let up. In addition to a solid suspense line, there was a great deal of character development within the book. Fans of the first book will be glad to see the progression of Noelle and Derek's relationship as well as Noelle's relationship with Skyler. I also enjoyed seeing how she was truly healing from the pain of her past. Though this author typically writes suspense with little to no romance, this one had a solid romance thread as well - not enough that I would put it in the romantic suspense category (where the balance is close to 50/50), but enough that readers who enjoy a good romance with their suspense will enjoy this one a bit more as well. The ending - it made me melt into a little puddle. And I'm not a huge fan of romance. The suspense element in this one was top notch and I loved getting inside the villain's head a bit as well. There were elements to the suspense thread that I was fully certain of and elements that I was completely unsure of and the author did a complete 180 twist towards the end that completely unseated all my assumptions. As a reader who reads a lot of suspense, it's hard to do that to me in a believable way, but this book did it. With a stellar suspense line, a realistic romance, exceptional character development (from characters that I already know and love), a solid faith thread, and some serious twists and turns, this book is easily one of my top reads of the year! Special thanks to the author for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
I had the opportunity to proofread an early copy of Dragonfly Ashes, and I loved it! No surprise there since CC Warrens has been one of my absolute favorite mystery/suspense authors since I picked up Criss Cross. Warrens manages to make me laugh out loud and fight tears--sometimes in the same scene--as I journey with the characters through tough subject matters. Warrens pens complex characters that elicit strong emotions. Whether you love, hate, fear, hurt for them, it's never halfway. Her books contain some of the strongest faith threads I've come across but always portrayed in an intrinsic, non-preachy manner.
I thoroughly enjoyed DragonFly Ashes. This story picks up from Firefly Diaries where readers are first introduced to Noelle, Derek, and Skyler. The characters are well-developed, and I enjoyed the progression of Derek and Noelle's relationship and Noelle and Skyler's relationship with each other. The plot was engaging and the mystery, coupled with suspense, kept my attention. Warrens did a fantastic job weaving faith threads and puns into the story. The villain's identity surprised me as the villain wasn't who I expected it to be. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will have a difficult time putting it down. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Back in Cherry Creek and the mysterious going ons of the people surrounding this small town. I enjoyed being back with Noelle. The story picks up a few months after the events of book one Firefly Diaries. The atmospheric setting combined with the protagonist's determination to protect and decipher what the latest threat could mean for her and her family. The romance was slow and steady which I enjoyed. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
How many ways can I sit here and rave about C.C. Warrens’ writing to get you to pick up one of her novels? Lol I said it about book one in this series, Firefly Diaries, but if you’re looking for the perfect read for SPOOKY SEASON, her Cherry Creek books are IT! This one even takes place over Halloween. Cue the creepy, cue the serious thrills of very intense suspense and cue the binge reading because it’s practically impossible to set these books down once you’ve picked one up.
The Dragonfly, a notorious serial killer, disappeared from an asylum decades ago. The majority believe him to have died in a fire, although some skeptics believe he escaped. Now, curiously similar events start popping up in the town of Cherry Creek. An arsonist seems to be on the loose, setting fires to barns, claiming a new victim each time.
Noelle McKenzie is a local author and still living a peculiar life in a seemingly haunted house that she purchased sight unseen in book one. The Dragonfly occurrences have her on edge but greatly pique her interest and she can’t help but get involved in the investigation alongside sheriff Derek Dempsey. Burning barns and murders aren’t the only chaos to unfold in Cherry Creek however – Noelle has a frightening run-in with an apparent superfan at a book signing one night which seem to cry out with stalker red flags.
Noelle is on edge right along with the entire town. It’s hard to know who can be trusted and until these terrible people are caught, it’s as though she goes around each day holding her breath in fear. I was truly stunned by the last 100 pages of this book. My jaw was on the floor with the unexpected twists this story took. Buckle up because this is one wild ride worth jumping on. Dark, twisted, beautifully creepy, but Christian fiction that is sure to change your heart. Ah yes, there is also a romance plot in case you’re wondering. ;)

This was UNEXPECTED with how it came to an end. I wasn't expecting the way this took a turn. The writing was great, the characters were still awesome and the new thrill and suspense were mindblowing.
We are back in Cherry Creek with our favorite author Noelle and her daughter Skylar. It picks up a few months after book one which I loved. It felt like I was back home. Noelle has finished her book Stolen which is based on the experiences that Skylar went through. From there things take a turn for the worse. She's approached by a strange man, receives strange messages and to add to that the city is "under attack" by the supposed Dragonfly. I loved the suspense in this book. The stakes were higher!
I adored Derek and his romance with Noelle. Their developments were definitely on point.
The history of the town and the Dragonfly had me hooked. I will say I did get a bit creeped out when people talked about the Dragonfly and his description.
The barn fires were an added bit of crazy to the mix of the stalker Noelle dealt with. It broke my heart to see the barns burn the way they did.
The reveal towards the end of the stalker and then on the Dragonfly shocked me and pissed me off all at once. I know some people can be crazy, but this was beyond crazy. This person was past saving in my mind.
Can we spotlight baby girl Skylar -- I love me some Sky. She is sassy, bold, funny, inquisitive, and every bit adorable!
Overall, I enjoyed this duology and highly recommend it.
I never question if I will enjoy a book by CC Warrens. She has an amazing talent to captivate you with every word. Dragonfly Ashes is absolutely amazing. I hesitated to read Firefly Diaries (book one) only because I didn’t want to leave the Holly world but I am so glad I did and have grown to love all the new characters created in the Cherry Creek series. I would highly recommend reading Firefly Diaries first as it will help you understand some things better in Dragonfly Ashes. If you have not read anything by Warrens then pick up any book of hers and you will be instant fans like the rest of us.
I’m so glad my friends recommended C.C. Warrens to me—I’ve devoured all her stories and can’t wait for more! I didn’t think anything could top the Holly series, but the Cherry Creek Mysteries might just do it.
I love Noelle and Derek and their evolving relationship! The secondary characters add so much depth to the series. I’m even starting to warm up to Walt! Ms. Warren is fantastic at developing her characters. The suspense and mystery kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was completely shocked by how it all unfolded! As usual, the faith thread was well done!
While you can read Dragonfly Ashes without having read Firefly Diaries, the character histories and relationships won’t be as rich—and you’ll miss out on another excellent mystery! Highly recommended!
Wow. Five stars all around! I had to read this book to kick off the year in category #1 You Can't Wait, because I could not wait!
I pre-ordered this book and it took everything in me to wait until I was done with last year's challenge so that I could start it.
I'm so happy it didn't disappoint! C. C. has a way of writing that makes me feel like I'm visiting old friends. I really feel like I know these guys and I loved catching up with them and seeing where they were in there lives. Also, I don't always have to connect or see myself in a character to enjoy a story, but it is a bonus! I just love Noelle! I see a lot of myself in her and I appreciate that C. C. wrote this character so well. Really love the growth of all the characters from the last book and I love Derek, Noelle, Skyler and their blended family!
Like the last book, there are a lot of creepy people, a big mystery and several murders to be solved. Also like last book, this book didn't disappoint. I didn't see the ending coming, and I was on edge most of the book. She really has a knack for combining elements of faith, family and the spooky that all combine for a wonderful, edge of your seat story that I did not want to put down!!!
I highly, highly recommend this book and the first book and this author!
Oh, WOW! C.C. Warrens' books just keep getting better! I didn't think it was possible to top the raw emotion and hope evoked by Firefly Diaries, but Dragonfly Ashes does just that.
This book really leans into the characters' healing journeys. It kicks off a few months past the end of the first book in the series, and life has calmed down for them in that intervening time - but little do they know just how much is about to change. Warrens' forces them to face their fears and the consequences of past trauma as a new villain emerges, which both jumpstarts new growth and gives readers a deeper look into each character.
I love how quirky and real this cast of characters is. I'm not sure how many books Warrens' has planned for this series, but I seriously hope that there are more coming, because I'm not ready to let Noelle, Derek, and Skylar go - but the best part of all is the way that Warrens' sprinkles truth throughout the story. You're reading along and suddenly BLAM! - she's written something poetic yet clear and true that makes your heart take notice. My digital copy is full of bookmarks noting alllll of these truths that I need to remember.
I needed to bookmark them, because Dragonfly Ashes is the kind of book that makes me think while I read. (Usually I'm more of an escapist-reader, just along enjoying the ride, figuring out the plot without too much effort, but this one?) Every time I thought I had something figured out, no, it was just another red herring that Warrens' had planted just for that purpose! For me, that makes the book even more fun - because I know she's doing it and it makes me want to solve it even more; but no - this one was a total surprise. How often does that happen - when you can read an entire story and be so into the plot twists and the clues and the quotes and not have even a glimmer of the real story by the time you get to the big reveal?
It just shows what a master CC Warrens' really is. Please, keep'em coming. Holly, Noelle - I'm here for them all.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
The Dragonfly was a serial killer that escaped from the local asylum and vanished decades ago. Now he is but a mysterious legend in Cherry Creek. But when an arsonist begins setting fires in barns with victims inside, leaving a similar calling card to the Dragonfly, the people of Cherry Creek begin to wonder if he has returned. This sparks writer, Noelle McKenzie's interest and she begins to do research on the local legend. Meanwhile, Captain Derek Dempsey investigates the arsonist to put a stop to the danger facing their town. Is there a connection to the Dragonfly and will they be able to stop the arsonist before they get caught in the killer's cross hairs?
This is book 2 of the Cherry Creek Mysteries. While it can be read alone, it is best read after Firefly Diaries, as there are spoilers for that book in this one. While I enjoyed Firefly Diaries, I loved this story even more! There was such great character development in this second installment! I enjoyed watching relationships change and progress amongst the characters. I loved the dynamic between Noelle and Skyler and how they adjusted to their new found family along with Walt and Derek. C.C. is soooooo good at writing characters that you care about and I definitely felt like I got to know the characters better in this book which endeared me to the series even more. The mystery kept me guessing and I was totally surprised by the end. I also feel like there was more suspense in this book compared to the first one. This series is more of a mystery than a suspense so I wasn't expecting it. I was pleasantly surprised by this as I prefer suspense to mystery. All in all, C.C. Warrens never disappoints. The mystery being a surprise, as well as having more suspense, brings this one up for me but the amazing character development is the cherry on top!
Thank you to C.C. Warrens for the ARC! All opinions expressed are my own.
Oh my goodness, she's done it again! Dragonfly Ashes is another awesome Christian suspense by C.C. Warrens. I absolutely loved it.
Noelle is an author who is struggling with coming up with an idea for her next book. She is living in the house she purchased at the beginning of the first book, Firefly Diaries, but she now has an adopted daughter, Skyler, living with her who she is determined to keep safe. Thankfully she doesn't have to protect her daughter all by herself. There is also Walt, the old guy who lives on the property and Noelle's boyfriend Derek, who also happens to be a police captain.
But when a stalker (or is it more than one stalker) appears, and barns are set ablaze, and murders occur, will Noelle be able to keep her daughter and herself safe, even with the help of Derek and Walt? Will they be able to discover who the murderer/arsonist is before more people die? Are the stalker and the arsonist connected? And how exactly does it all connect to the Dragonfly killer from decades ago?
The author gripped me with the first line and I remained rivetted to the story.
I've been in love with the author's Holly series since I read the first book. And now I'm loving reading her Cherry Creek Mysteries. I loved Firefly Diaries, but this one was even better. It has the author's wonderful storytelling, including edge of your seat suspense and witty humor. I found myself literally laughing out loud multiple times, and constantly highlighting quotes, and sharing them with my family.
The mystery in this was intriguing and the suspense was intense. I DID NOT see the ending coming at all. Quite the twist. And faith is integral in the characters' lives.
I loved revisiting the characters from book one abd getting to see relationships evolve.
Definitely a book I highly recommend, but make sure to read book one first.
I received an e-copy of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
This was UNEXPECTED with how it came to an end. I wasn't expecting the way this took a turn. The writing was great, the characters were still awesome and the new thrill and suspense were mindblowing.

Overall, I enjoyed this duology and highly recommend it.
CC Warrens never disappoints. Dragonfly Ashes is the second book in the Cherry Creek Mysteries.
There are rumors that The Dragonfly has returned. The problem is, he died years ago, didn't he? The small village of Cherry Creek is once more plagued by arson and murders. Will the firefighters and law enforcement officers find the arsonist before more lives are taken?
Noelle is trying to come up with ideas for her next book as she is renovating her home, learning to be a mom to her adopted daughter, starting a relationship with Derek, and oh, yes, stay alive.
I was totally surprised when the identity of the arsonist is revealed. I did not see it coming.
CC Warrens writes suspense (with a bit of romance in this book), creates realistic characters who are Christian without being preachy. This book had me laughing out loud at times, because CC always knows when to add some humor..
I was totally surprised when the identity of the arsonist is revealed. I did not see it coming.
If you have not read the first book, Firefly Diaries, you should read it before Dragonfly Ashes.
C.C. Warrens is my one of my favorite authors and her Holly novels are probably some of my favorite books of all time. So when I finished those are decided to read Firefly Diaries, my expectations were high but I didn’t think I could possibly love the Cherry Creek Mysteries quite as much. I’m happy to report that I was wrong!
Dragonfly Ashes picks up where Firefly Diaries left off and immediately launches you into a whirlwind of suspense, mystery but most importantly, back into the lives of the characters that you can’t help but love. One of the things I love about these books is how well the characters are developed and how genuinely likable each of them are to the reader (yes, even Mr. Walt).
The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat and despite my attempts to guess the identity of the Dragonfly and to make sense of everything going on, I happily failed and was totally shocked by the twist at the end.
You’ll definitely want to read Firefly Diaries before this one—although it’s possible to enjoy without reading the first book, I think the first book is really essential to getting to know the characters and some background here.
Oh, My Goodness! Be ready to try and breathe as you read this newest book by CC Warrens. From the first page to the very last, you will be on the edge of your seat, needing to know if the Dragonfly has genuinely come back to life and who is starting the fires. Can they find this out before someone else dies? Will Noelle, Skyler, and Derek ever find peace in all this craziness? You’ll think you know what is happening, and then, BAM, this author throws a spin on it that you never saw coming! WOW! This is one book I will recommend to anyone who wants to read a book full of twists and turns. It had action, tension, drama, mystery, creepy and scary moments, sweet romance, and healing hearts. C.C. Warrens is a skilled writer who weaves fantastic tales. She has moved up on my list of favorite authors. Her books are so captivating that I don’t want to put them down. If you love books that will keep you spellbound until the very end, then this is one for you! I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. The author gave me this book, which did not influence my review in any way; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Well, that didn't sound like someone who Noelle McKenzie wanted around her home or her daughter. Nevertheless, that was how Skyler had described the face that she had seen outside her window, and now Noelle had seen the same figure. What was it with people and masks . . . . especially around Halloween. More disturbing was the fact that this particular apparition was reminiscent of the area's sole serial killer, the Dragonfly.
And then there were the barn fires . . . .
Cleverly capturing the threads of its diverse cast of characters into one united storyline, this book takes turns deepening relationships (yes, Noelle and Derek are still an item, Skyler is settling in with her "second" mother, and Walt is just as ornery as ever, but slightly improved) while investigating the sort of misguided evil intentions that potentially fragment a community into a million pieces. Will dreams turn into ashes or will a little girl's fervent prayers be answered?
A wonderfully layered, carefully plotted romantic suspense that skirts the edges of being a thriller!
Dragonfly Ashes was another masterpiece and must read!
I've had life go completely crazy and I actually left Noelle in a cliffhanger. I'm sorry, Noelle!!! Dragonfly Ashes by C.C. Warrens was amazing! I just put it down and I will be picking it back up to reread shortly!
This book was beautiful and I loved the details of the story. Noelle is just so believable and lovable as a person. Skylar & Derek are growing so much a part of the world, too! They are digging their way into my heart, just as Holly & crew did. This book was so well crafted that I was second guessing everything right up to the end because it was so well written I was debating who did what. I have to say that I fell more in love with sweet little Skylar in this book. She reminds me so much of my daughter at times. The faith of a child is beautiful and I loved the way it is portrayed in Dragonfly Ashes.❤️
I'm going to recommend that if you are going to start this book to start when you will be able to finish it. Please don't leave poor Noelle in an awkward spot like I did!
Dragonfly Ashes by C.C. Warrens is my first read of this author. I'm sold. I'd pick up another book of Warrens in a heartbeat.
Noelle McKenzie is a local author currently having a writer's block until a barn fire and a murder rock her cozy little small town. Noelle bought a fixer-upper with a bucketful of ghost stories. Kids love to vandelize the home in the wee hours, scaring Noelle.
Noelle adopted an adorable little girl named Skyler, saving the child from a terrible past. Noelle is also interested in Derek, a local police officer.
The story leaps into suspense when a person wearing a dragonfly costume makes ghostly appearances. Whoever this is, is the one kidnapping people and killing them then leaving their bodies in a barn to burn. The town is frightened.
Thanks to Warens fantastic story weaving, readers won't want to set this book down for something simple like eating or sleeping. The characters are great...especially Walt. He is among my favorite. The plot is well played. The writing is supberb.
Wow! Dragonfly Ashes has accomplished something I never expected by surpassing the earlier successes of the author—at least in my mind. I absolutely stuck to the Holly novels as some of my favorite suspense books of all time, but this book may have just jumped to number one.
Noelle is a deep character with a heart of gold, a mother’s instinct, and the mind of a writer. Her relationship with Skyler is so real I walked through every step in her shoes.
Derek is the perfect guy for Noelle. He’s steady, strong, and completely putty in Skyler’s hands which makes his relationship with them real on so many levels.
I must add that Walt, the surrogate grumpy grandfather of the group added an extra layer of interest to the story.
The suspense in the story was perfectly paced and so,so good at the same time it was twisty, and led me in circles right to the end.
This book is definitely a five star read and I highly recommend it.
This book was absolutely amazing! I was hooked from the first page and had a really hard time putting it down when I had no choice. A lot of sleepy mornings were caused by this book.
I loved getting to see more of Noelle, Derek, Skyler, and even Walt, as well as the rest of the Cherry Creek residents. They are such a wonderful and interesting group who love each other very much.
The suspense in this book kept me guessing the entire time. I thought I had the ending figured out twice, but that conclusion was a twist I didn't see coming.
I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next for these wonderful people. I very highly recommend this book and series to anyone! They are wonderful. Please do read the first book in this series before this one. They are definitely ones to read in order.
Dragonfly Ashes picks up where Firefly Diaries (book 1) ends, and continues with Noelle, Dereck, and Skylar's story. For this reason, I think it is best to read Firefly Diaries before reading this one.
This was another fabulous, edge-of-your-seat thriller by C.C. Warrens. There were a few heart-stopping moments, excellent character development, tender moments, and a developing romance. The stalker's perspective enhanced the creepy factor.
I thought I knew who the bad guys were. They were so obvious! But, I was soooo wrong! I was shocked when all was revealed. I do not know how Warrens can weave such a diabolical tale, with plot twists and a surprise reveal, and have it all come together seamlessly!
I hope there are more books in this series because I am NOT ready to be done with Cherry Creek.
Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
CC warrens is a phenomenal author! You’ll never ever regret reading ANY of her books! At any given moment you’ll be hanging off the edge, laughing, crying, angry, and smiling like an idiot! She’s talented at pulling you straight into her stories that they don’t even feel like a story!
It becomes a reality you don’t wanna leave! Book after Book she keeps finding ways to pull the rug out from under you! If you love the mystery, the suspense… If you love having a reason to also remember why you love and fight for the things you do… You need to read her books. With her Cherry Creek diaries, or her Holly series… she never Disappoints! This latest book is proof enough of that! Make sure you go and read it!
Absolute perfection from an amazing author!! Once again, C.C. Warrens delivers a masterpiece of suspense and beauty and humor that is almost beyond words. Her stories need to be read in order for the full effect, so please read Firefly Diaries first. You will want Dragonfly Ashes ready to go as soon as you finish Firefly Diaries.
This new book has everything we want and more. Such a surprise ending and there were moments I was so glad my husband was next to me while I read. This writer still provides shockingly fearful moments that are just what we like in these books. While I always expect to be blown away, I’m still surprised at just how fabulous the writing is!!
Loved this book so much! Just keeps getting better and better!!!!!
C.C. Warrens has done it again. This book has everything a suspense/mystery/suspense reader wants in a story. There's even sweet relationship developments between Noelle and Derek that will thrill romance fans.
This book seems to have more thriller-type elements than the Holly series, but the author does an excellent job giving enough detail to set us in the middle of the scene without creeping us out too much.
I highly recommend this read! You can read it as a stand-alone, but I think you'll enjoy it much more if you read Firefly Diaries and get to know the characters through that story first.
Pure Gold! Everything C.C. Warrens writes is gold, and Dragonfly Ashes, her latest book, does not disappoint. It is pure gold! All I read is suspense, but I sure did not see this book’s villain coming! What a shock, which is one reason I consider it pure gold. Other reasons are that it is filled with humor, real-life relationship wisdom and lovable characters, some even quirky, that really grow on you. Do yourself a favor and start this series. I certainly hope there are more to come soon in this series.
I have read every single CC Warren's book she has written. With every new book I read of hers, I think she can't get any better at writing because every book is amazing! And then BAM she does it again! This book was so incredible and I don't want to say too much to reveal any spoilers but I love the twist and turns of this book! This book is carefully crafted with excellent writing skills and plot twists. I love the continuation of the two main characters. I highly recommend this book but be warned you will not want to put it down once you start reading it.
A CC Warrens book!!! Stop life, I need to nothing but read!!! And this book did not disappoint. The storyline was amazing!! It had me guessing until the last page! The protagonists were amazing. I’m completely in love with Skylar. I would adopt her as well!! The writing again, top notch. I live in Apple Creek where this story take place. The Asylum where the ending take place is down the road from my house! Is it haunted?? I wouldn’t tell you if I knew!! I just love this author. She is amazing, please pick up this book and read it. Amazing worth the 5star rating!!!!!
It was so good to be back in Cherry Creek with Nichole, Derek and the rest of the gang. I didn’t realize how much I missed this characters until I got into this book. I do recommend reading the first book, Firefly Diaries, first though.
The story kept me interested and guessing until the end and I loved all the twists and turns. Murder, arsonists, stalkers…oh my! All this mayhem with a wonderful touch of wit and humor and light romance.
This book is Christian fiction that’s not preachy, just perfect. A strong 4.5 Star book.
