Remi Gatti, a half-human con man with a psychic ability to manipulate sexual desire, has to steal a wedding present from a newlywed marine biologist—without the scientist’s sea-monster wife eating him first.
The job should be straightforward: board a tourist bus bound for Salem, seduce his mark, and make a clean get away with the gift—a powerful alien artifact Remi’s larcenous family wants for its own nefarious purposes.
But the unconventional married couple was brought together by the Matchmaker, an alien entity that can alter reality to further its matrimonial mission. Remi might not believe in true love, but his powers are useless against it. When the con goes bad, the usually amoral Remi struggles with a moral dilemma—help the couple and incur his family’s wrath, or try to outmatch the Matchmaker and face the consequences of defying love.
M.A. Guglielmo is a neurosurgeon, mother of two awesome daughters, and a life-long fan of speculative fiction. Her Italian grandmother may or may not have been able to cast the evil eye on difficult neighbors, and Maria loves telling a good story, especially if magical curses and witty villains are involved. After having the wits scared out of her by ghost tales told to her over a campfire in the Moroccan Sahara, she’s come up with a plan to travel to all the potential settings for her novels. Since those include the mountain-ringed home of the Jinn and a future dystopia complete with monster portals, some items on her bucket list might be harder to achieve than others. Maria was born and raised in Rhode Island and lives there with her two daughters and assorted pets, and is always dreaming of the stories that can come out of her next travel destination.
Fast-paced, intriguing, and a solid intro to the world.
Witch City Rift is a quick, engaging prequel that drops you straight into a world where magic and reality collide.
The urban setting mixed with supernatural elements gives it a very modern fantasy feel, and the pacing keeps things moving without dragging. Even in novella form, there’s enough world-building to spark curiosity without overwhelming you.
What stands out most is the atmosphere—it feels slightly gritty, a little mysterious, and full of potential. The story hints at larger conflicts and deeper lore, which makes it a strong setup for the main series.
It’s the kind of read that leaves you wanting to explore more of the world right away.
A short story in the Ringworld series that introduces the reader to Remi the son of mafia Don. Remi is a human-ratkind hybrid and is after an artifact that allows the human mate of a water drakone to contact/summon his mate while she is under water. An interesting addition to the story line.
