Down a Notch
Guitarist Nicky Hazard has a drinking problem, an aggression problem, and, when he wakes up in his hotel room in the middle of his band’s latest tour, a serious dick problem. Featuring Rider's trademark combination of (seemingly) straight rock musicians and some intense experimentation with D/s play. The focus on enforced chastity is a novel innovation, and pushes both the hero, Nicky, and the story in cool, unexpected directions, which are picked up in book 2, Down Another Notch. My only complaint is that the editing in this and the sequel is rougher than in some of the other books. It detracts a bit from what is otherwise a smart, insightful, original story.
Bottom Line: At this point, I'd pretty much read anything of Rider's. Catchy erotic scenarios that in the hands of another writer would yield a hot PWP read, in hers become tools to really dig deep into her MC's less acknowledged impulses and desires.

I didn't expect the dildo play.
Cris was quite the surprise. Very clever in using a dildo and not himself (ouch) and the enforced chastity brought a touch of eroticism to the scene. It was a turn on to read how he trained Nicky with the black and white dildo. I was rather disappointed when he let Nicky go.
What puzzles me is whether the act was just now having an effect on Nicky or whether he had harboured these feelings deep down for a long time? Nicky seemed really put off at first. But then again, for someone not liking cock, he had no problems swallowing it down for some wine.
I'll have to read Down Another Notch and hope to get some answers.

This is a review for both novellas.
The first one should be called "How To Give Pleasure to a Dildo and Be Rewarded With Alcohol".
The second one, thank Heavens, is longer. My, my... first time I read a denial so strong! Since book #1 Nicky is denying himself to come off. I love this kind of hot mm books, where the characters are a bit fucked up and they know it, but can't do nothing to prevent it. Second book is 90% of Nicky restraining to come, locked in a cage, while Chris does get what he wants. I am pretty ignorant in the bdsm genre, so I don't understand the last cage, the last rivet, how it works. Other than that, I enjoyed this story immensely, even if I did want at least ONE release.

It was interesting to follow Nicky as he tries to figure out how he ends up in enforced chastity. It was very unexpected what happens between him and Cris. I was disappointed when Cris let Nicky . I'm glad there's a sequel so I can see what happens next.

I love kink and the start of this was good, but this short story was ultimately a letdown and didn't work for me. (unless you like 40 odd pages of I wouldn't recommend it.
Obviously the story continues in Down Another Notch but I won't read it.
It's disappointing because I loved Games Boys Play.
