A curse from long ago. An ancient lineage of kings. And a promise that might cost everything…
Ash never wanted to be the one everyone else counted on. Along with his wife, Saedis, and their newborn son, he’d just wanted to get home. But when his friend Valemon lay dying, Ash swore he’d return to the Winter Palace. And that means accepting his place as the next bear king.
Now he’s here with his family and a camp of desperate refugees, all looking to him for things he’s afraid he can’t give them. Protection. Leadership. Answers. Valemon is gone…or is he?
The Winter Palace isn’t just an abandoned ruin; an unstable magic has taken root in the between-place. The palace hides its own secrets, and its own agenda. Worse, there are others already present in the castle—mysterious entities who would rather not see Ash restore the place and take his place as the newest of the bear kings.
They’d rather see him dead…
Right of Winter is a standalone story in the Bear Kings saga, a coming-of-age fantasy adventure about family, identity, and trust.
Sometimes new authors have a great start, and then have nothing else to follow it up. That's not the case here. A.E. Becker continues her Bear Kings series with what she calls an in-between book, one that helps show how the characters move from A to B, but isn't necessarily a major point in and of itself of the greater story. I think that's like calling the West Wind a breeze. This was a fantastic tale, and one that showed so much character growth by the end that there is no way you can consider this a filler story. My only complaint is that I'm going to have to wait so long for the next story in the series.
