Welcome to the sensual world of the Lupine, where the burning drive to mate claims all...
After a childhood trauma left Arianna Sanders terrified of sex, the only man the pretty Lupine werewolf desires is her fiercely protective guardian. But the sexy, mysterious shifter harbors a dark secret, one he’s determined to hide from Arianna.
Kyle Morgan hungers for the voluptuous Arianna and dreams of consummating the passion smoldering between them. When he’s forced into mating with her to save her life, he must tame the savage, sexual beast inside him before taking the virgin he’s vowed to protect from those hungering to claim her, including himself…
Bonnie Vanak fell in love with romance novels during childhood. While cleaning a hall closet, she discovered her mother’s cache of paperbacks and started reading. Thus began a passion for romance and a lifelong dislike for housework.
After years of newspaper reporting, Bonnie became a writer for a major international charity. She travels to destitute countries such as Haiti to write about famine, disease and other issues affecting the poor. When the emotional strains of her job demanded a diversion, she turned to her childhood dream of writing romance novels.
She lives in Florida with her husband Frank and two dogs, where she happily writes books amid an ever-growing collection of dust bunnies.
My Review: The best thing this book has going for it....some SCORCHING sexual tension. Seriously, wow!
Ari was captured and tortured when she was twelve. She has ghost memories of the event, but it has left her sexually scarred. The thought of having sex with ANYone is absolutely terrifying to her.
Kyle has been Ari's guardian since he found her wandering the forest naked at age 12. She reached mating age over a year ago and Kyle desperately wants to mate her, but he's a hybrid and is hiding what his second half is. His first half is Lupine (werewolf) like Ari, but the other half of satyr...an incredibly sexual creature and the type of creature that was part of the torture of her capture. Kyle is literally the stuff of her nightmares, even though she loves and trusts him. She's having a horrible time getting past the scars from her past.
The other issue is that Ari has a death threat hanging over her head. If she doesn't mate by the next full moon, she is going to be killed because her hormone and emotional levels are so out of whack, she continues to lose control of her wolf.
The best scene in this book....when Aiden, the alpha, forces Kyle's hand. He loves Ari so much and I love that he can't control that. He needs and wants her. He has no choice, but to mate her even when his mind is telling him that she will never be able to live with his Satyr side. It really made for some high tension, high suspense scenes and I loved that aspect of it. I honestly couldn't see how he was going to win out over her fear.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this series. I love shifter novels and there are some really creative aspects to this world that Bonnie Vanak has created. In this book, she set up at least two others and I am already excited about both of the possibilities of those stories.
Arianna has deep seeded fears. The question becomes will the one that has been her protector since he found her lost in the woods, be the one to allay her fears? This story wraps around the horrors of childhood terrors and the strength that it takes to overcome those deep seeded fears. Arianna isn’t the only one with a questionable past. Kyle her protector didn’t live with the Cosby family, that’s for sure, he had his own nightmarish childhood memories. Those times from his past have forged him into a caring protector of Arianna. These are characters you can’t wait for something good to happen to them. Their star crossed sensibilities may be the one thing that stands in their way. I loved reading this book. It has mystery, and sizzle to keep everything flowing in the right direction. It was a great afternoon read, perfect for these gloomy afternoons!
This story delivers a whole lot of angst, danger and raw emotion, as our hero and heroine deal with their shattered pasts and uncertain futures.
Demons plague them both, as they battle the memories of the devastating events that shaped their lives when they were children, barely entering puberty.
After saving Arianna on that fateful day, a trust has formed between Kyle and Ari over the years as they depend on each other to hunt and protect the pack they call their own.
But can they be more than devoted friends to ensure not only Arianna’s survival, but also Kyle’s sanity. The powers that be have deemed that only their mating will prevent Ari’s demise, but can Kyle’s inner beast be trusted to love and protect the one woman he has the ability to destroy.
This has been my favourite book of the series to date, but there are more to come, and I’m so excited!!!
Trigger Warning: This book and this review has themes of rape, involuntary restraint (also being drugged without consent) and child molestation.
Well...sorry for not liking this one either. I'm not having much luck with this series so far, which is strange because I like this author when she writes for Harlequin... I'll maybe give this series one or two more reads before I decide to end the attempt.
So, initially, I liked this story better than the first two. It seemed that this one would be less anger inducing - being that the female gets to exercise a bit more choice in her mating...though not much since she has to either mate or die and the alphas sort of decided who, but at least she already wanted him for a mate. And at first, he was at super patient with her rather than forcing things. But then we hit a snag. You see, the heroine is traumatized because at 12 years old, she was drugged, tied up in a cave and nearly assaulted by a lusty satyr. The hero wants her to get over this fear because that’s the sort of stuff he likes to do and she needs to be able to handle it. So does he get her therapy? No. He drugs her, ties her up in a cave and turns into a satyr so she can “face her fear” and get over it. Doesn’t work as he expected. If that’s love, that’s some fucking tough love. That’s some pretty selfish love IMHO. Really...instead of talking to her about it or asking her permission, he drugs her without her knowledge and he FORCES her to relive her worst nightmare. And what’s worse was that this total abuse of her trust was about his sexual needs, not because he loved her. And given that she wasn’t able to overcome her fears of sex and accept his satyr form (while drugged and restrained and on her first day of sex no less) he decides that he can’t be with her. What does that say? That a woman who has been traumatized isn’t worth the time or the effort it takes to get better? That she doesn’t deserve love because she’d nearly been raped and was having a tough time getting over it? A man in love would suffer through it until she could. As Arianna says, she needs time and he'd be an asshole not to do his best to give it to her. That sort of trauma isn't something you "get over" on someone else's timeline. Kyle was a piece of shit because his sexual needs totally trump her sexual fears.
And beyond the disgusting scene above, this was my biggest complaint with this one. I didn’t feel the love between the H/h. The two most definitely lust after one another, and they love each other as friends, but I didn’t get the “in love” feelings. Kyle is a lusty satyr, so he needs sex on the regular. The first scene in this book is Kyle giving it good to some lady in the bathroom while Arianna is out in the bar. If he was in love with her then, he wouldn’t be doing that. And if Arianna had been in love, she’d be feeling some jealousy or hurt. Mostly she just expressed interest. So these two did not start out in love. Then they get all sexy and lusty and it’s absolutely clear that they care about each other, but their “feelings” for one another never really felt any different than in the beginning.
Several things in this book require some imagination stretching, which I’m not sure I was so successful at. The first is believing that a Satyr is some lethal, killing machine type of beast. Let’s be honest. A Satyr is half-man, half-goat, with a little bit of horse thrown in for good measure. And they’re drunken and lustful beings. They are not superfast, terrifying, dangerous and wild beasts. I’d be more afraid of a wolf than a satyr. The second is that, with as growly and possessive as these lupines are, one mated pair could invite four other unmated wolves into the “wood shed” with them to have butt sex with her and cover her in their ejaculate so her husband can get her pregnant. No way do I believe that happened without blood being shed. Another is that a woman who has a fear of being raped and was restrained during the traumatic event, will actually come to enjoy (right off the bat no less) being restrained for sex. No dice for me. I’m not going to believe that without some SIGNIFICANT therapy, a woman who was tied up and nearly raped is just going to love when her man ties her up to have sex with her. Nope.
Finally, this book crosses a line for me in that it includes graphic animal sex. That’s one of my hard and fast rules (pun sort of intended) in PNR - if you shift into an animal, you don’t have graphic sex with another person or animal. In here we get two wolves having very pleasurable and graphic sex - shiny red wolf penises, licking wolf vulvas, etc.. It’s just...eh. I just don’t think animals having sex is very sexy. Humanoid sex only for me thanks.

More like a 3.5 read! Gave it 4 stars because i love that it has a bit of originality and i want to encourage the author for further books in the series. I liked the story, kept me intrigued and the lenght was really good, not too long and not too short but the perfect lenght for the story! I also like the hint at future books in the series! I will for sure read the other stories, i want the story of Jackson and Lexie, Darius and his mate of which we know she is not dead and Aiden's story ( i can see that one coming)
Wow, I couldn't put this one down! And I thought the first book in the series was good, this one was even better! What a great story line Bonnie Vanak does it again! I can not wait to read the next book in the series and look forward to reading the other books to come in the series! I highly recommend!
There was actually a good story here. The main characters weren't constantly all over each other. The characters were likable and the story kept me interested. All in all it was an enjoyable read.
In this world of werewolf shifters, 19 year old Arianna is far past the age of needing to mate. However, when she was 12, Ari was almost assaulted and is now deathly afraid of sex. The only werewolf she feels any desire for is her guardian, Kyle. Kyle has been protecting Arianna and her virtue, as he knows about her past. But Kyle also has a past - a dark secret that keeps him from acting on his true feelings for Arianna. Arianna makes a grave mistake, which results in an ultimatum from a powerful wizard – mate before the full moon or die. Arianna wants to find three missing werewolf children before the full moon and meeting her fate. Kyle has other plans, as he won’t allow Arianna die… he’ll have to tame his inner beast(s) and claim her as his mate. I read this book as part of a series bundle (Dark and Dangerous), and was able to pick up on the story’s world without having read any previous stories in this series. There were a lot of things I liked about this book, but some I disliked which are as follows (somewhat spoilery!):
Likes: • Shifters! This is probably my favorite paranormal romance genre. Beyond werewolves, there are also ogres and satyrs in this story, along with wizards. There may be more supernatural beings in this series, but I’ll have to read all of the books to find out. • Arianna – she is a feisty girl with a sarcasm I really liked. She’s brave and says what she means. It is hard for her to face what she went through as a 12 year old, but she keeps trying in order to be with the man she loves. • Kyle – he knows what he is and tries his damn best to keep his beast on leash in order to protect Arianna. He wants nothing more than to claim Ari has his mate, but he also has his own demons to overcome.
Dislikes: • I love the “BBW” angle to my romance reading as much as probably most people. But we were hit over the head constantly with how big Arianna’s butt was. So yeah, she’s a bigger girl. But it was mentioned maybe twice as many times as it should have. • Incident in the “shed” – so Kyle thinks it would be a good idea for Ari to face her fears head on. But he throws her into her fear 100% full force! I think most people would try to ease a person into it little by little, but he basically throws her into a psychotic episode. For someone trying his best to help her overcome her fears, he sure didn’t think that through.
I would love to read this entire series in the future. My best friend loves werewolf shifters, and I can definitely see why. I would think that there is an underlying conflict throughout the series, but we get a HEA for each couple that’s featured. I like those kinds of series…
I got this book as part of the Dark and Dangerous, Six-in-One Hot Paranormal Romances Boxed Set. This is the second book int he Werewolves of Montana series.
I feel like I should start by saying that paranormal isn't really my thing because I have a problem grasping all the otherworldly mythological creatures. I was drawn to this boxed set of paranormal stories because of the erotic aspect of them. If you're REALLY into the paranormal stuff, you might like this story more than I did.
I DID like this story in the romantic aspect. I loved Arianna and Kyle and wanted nothing but good things for them. They were both troubled from horrible childhoods, but they were both unbelievably good and in love with each other. You've read the synopsis, so I won't repeat it, but I REALLY enjoyed these two working past both of their personal bullshit. Ari had been kidnapped (or lupine-napped) as a child and held as a sexual prisoner and tormented, thus leading her to have some pretty serious sexual fears. Kyle was a hybrid and had been ousted from his childhood pack and branded as a deviant. After Ari escaped her captor, Kyle found her and vowed to always protect her. Now that it's time for her to mate, he wants nothing more than for her to be happy. So he's struggling with controlling his overwhelming sexual magnetism toward her because he understands her sexual fears and would rather die than scare her.
A lot of other shit happens with wizards, ogres, satyrs, and black magic. That's the part of the story that I could have done without. I'm good with vampires and werewolves, and I can even handle witches sometimes, but the other mythological creatures are just a bit too much for me. I do like added drama to enhance the romantic aspect of a story and create conflict between the couple and this story definitely had PLENTY of outside drama. It was just that the paranormal drama was not so much to my liking.
I would be interested in reading the first book in this series, but I don't know about any subsequent books in the series. The ending was sort of left open for a potential paranormal species war of sorts, maybe, and that just isn't really my thing. But this story is good. The sex is hot and successfully got my juices pumping which is all I can really ask of an erotic story. And the story held my interest and wasn't a struggle.
I got this book as part of the Dark and Dangerous, Six-in-One Hot Paranormal Romances Boxed Set.
3.5 Stars ~ The Mating Hunt (Werewolves of Montana #2) by Bonnie Vanak
The Mating Hunt is book two in Werewolves of Montana series by Bonnie Vanak. With this being book two I did not have any trouble picking up on the world or charactors. The sexual tension between Kyle and Arianna was well done. I liked how Kyle took his time and helped her over come her past trauma.
Arianna has a phobia of sex. As a werewolf it is in their nature to be sexual as well as for them to come into heat. They need sex to alleviate the tension during that time of year.
Kyle also has a difficult past with him being a hybrid (wolf and satyar). He has been a drifter for most his life. Keeping his hybrid status a secret. Both have difficult past to over come before they can come together.
I like to read series books in order, but this book can be read as a stand a lone. The Mating Hunt was a good read. It did not prompt me to want and read the rest of the series, but I did enjoy the story line and sexual tension between the leads. We get lots of sexual tension, hot sex later on, a bad wizard, wolf sex as well as satyar and a couple who must both over come their past traumas and hurts to be together.
Ari is a passionate lupine scared of being intimate and having sex. Kyle is a half-breed, half lupine and half Satyr. He wants to be with Ari but a Satyr is the reason she is so scared, and she doesn't know that he is half Satyr.
Ari exposes herself to skins one too many times and a wizard says: find a mate or die at the next full moon. So off she runs into the forest to go looking for some lupine children who have gone missing. Kyle is sent after her and they have to figure out who is behind the kidnappings, how to save the children and how to save Ari.
The book seemed to be only about sex, and I didn't think it was such a great read. Should the story had a bit of elaboration around Tristam and the otherwordlers then maybe this focused too much on sex. There is one bit at the end where Kyle needs sexual relief as soon as possible to combat the effects of the full moon and the drugs injected into him - yes of course sex will save the day!
I wouldn't rush out to read the rest of the books, this didn't make me interested in the rest of the characters or the world they are from.
I loved the book! This is probably my third or forth time rereading. It's worth not just reading once, but multiple times. Just like the other books in the series it takes you to their pack land and engulfs your imagination in the wonderful bliss of being a Lupine. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys reading about hybrids, love between shifters, sweet longing, and the urge of sexual release with whom the characters other half is :3
The book has some pretty good characters and a unique plot line, but I never really got too absorbed in the story, not sure why, as all the elements or good writing are here, I read to the end with no effort, but I was a bit anxious to get on with my next book-- if I identify the missing ingredient later, I'll update the review, but for now, I'll say it was a good read and I would try something else by the author.
This was in a 6 book collection I got (Dark and Dangerous: Six in One Hot Paranormal Romances). I liked this story. It's a short novella in a series, (book 2 actually) but it's still a stand alone story. I am not sure I liked it enough to go read the rest of the series but I did enjoy it while I read it.
Yep, I’m reading book two. I enjoyed book one, Mating Chase for what it was. Book 2 Mating Hunt, I was looking for something a little more substantial. It’s a little longer, with a little more depth, but not brilliant. I’ll try book 3 Mating Seduction because I feel I own the series that, but if I don’t find that little something more, then I’ll probably be done with the series.
Very chaotic writing; the plot jumped around and the book's focus drifted. I almost didn't finish, which would have been a shame as I did enjoy the finesse with which the author pulled some of the threads together at the end(hero's back-story).
It got a little hokey towards the last few pages, but otherwise I felt this was a pretty good story. I appreciate the fact that although Ari was traumatized as a young girl, she was trying to make a real effort to overcome her trauma and be a healthier person sexually. Good for her.
I love Bonnie Vanak's Werewolves of Montana novels and minis. Hot Shape-Shifter men and the women they will do anything for. True Love, Fate and soul mates. Amazing story lines and characters. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
This was well written, with a lot of emotion, intense sexual want. I know I wrote a review on this before but unfortunately I no longer have the book. Out of all the stories I read I liked this one the most.
Read in the Dark and Dangerous (Shifters Unbound 3.5) Anthology
While I liked Mating Heat in the Dark and Deadly: Eight Bad Boys of Paranormal Romance (Shifters Unbound #2.5)anthology, I just couldn't get into this.
The heroine was TSTL and silly and I was embarrassed by her behavior. Sorry.
I still see the possibilities for world and character build, I really liked Kyle and Arianna, but it's not really happening. Objectively, the sex got better, but it's generally not really my cup of tea.
Quite enjoyed the romance between Kyle and Arianna. Kyle in particular is everything you could ask for in an alpha male. The story got a bit more mystic than I would have preferred toward the end, but otherwise a really good read and fun series.
An usual story with interesting characters and different kind of beings. I liked readying it and seeing a real development and evolution between Kyle and Ari.
