David Wolf #4

Deadly Conditions

Rate this book
Rocky Points, a small town in the mountains of Colorado, has just been hit with an epic snowstorm, and while skiers at the resort are enjoying deep turns and face shots, the rest of the people in town are struggling to dig themselves out.

When a dead body is uncovered -- brutally murdered and clearly marked with some sort of cryptic message -- Sheriff David Wolf and his officers of the RPPD are put on the clock, left scrambling to find a committed killer, and stop him before the corpses start piling higher than the snow.

Wolf decides he'll stop at nothing to halt the killings, and when his investigation leads him to corruption involving the highest authorities, he's forced to gamble everything--life, limb, and his entire career--in order to unveil the truth.

The fourth in the series and I am working myself through them all.

Starts out with a nasty murder, it's exciting and keeps going. You are put into the winter ski resort that is in Sheriff Wolf's county and there is not only a murder around but lots of suspects. It is COLD and WET. If you've ever been skiing on in the snow, you'll feel it here.

Great ski scene as well as other action scenes.

At book four now, I love the characters, especially Wolf and his deputies, and feel like I know them. Start here or book one, so far all of the books are excellent. Always ready for the next book, starting book 5 now.

wow the twists and turns 😁

I’ve been holding out on writing a review but I can’t hold it in anymore. I am enjoying the series so much , from the storyline, plot , writing style and all I just love it

Im not impressed with David’s ex wife though and how David seem to be stuck on her even after everything 🤦🏾‍♀️. Proper review will come on the last book of this series unless something comes up 🤭

Murder, corruption and lots and lots of snow: When a snow plow uncovers the body of a young woman, strangled and marked with an X on her forehead, Sheriff David Wolf has his hands full chasing a killer while the rest of the small town of Rocky Points is enjoying the ski resort and engaging in shady deals and blackmail behind the scenes.

I haven't read any of the previous books in the series (just picked this one up as a freebie at some point), but I might go check them out now. A solid thriller with well-developed characters, taut suspense and a nice twist to the end. Oh, and a high speed chase on skis, which was kinda cool.

Another exciting, fast David Wolf story. Was hoping for more with Wolf and Sarah at the end but we’ll see how the series continues.

Strategic

This segment of the David Wolf saga was predictable in some ways, yet demonstrated real foresight and planning. Interesting reaches into other jurisdictions to solve the case.

This was my fourth book in the David Wolf series by Jeff Carson. Like those before it (also including the short, "Gut Decision", which I also heartedly recommend), the book unfolds in an organized way that leaves me, the reader, wanting to read on. I call this "wanting to read on" good thread. Because, for one thing I just can't put the book down and for another, if I should have to do so for whatever reason, I don't have to re-read pages to remember where I am. As a corollary to muscle memory in sports, Carson's books have excellent "reader memory".

I don't re-tell story lines in my reviews. Suffice it to say, I look for good character development, which allows me to "walk along", so to speak, with both the protagonist or antagonist. It puts me, the reader, in the scene as though what is taking place is on a movie screen rather than in printed form. The theme, of course, is thriller and the plot bears that out, meaning, there is never a dull moment i.e., no lag in the story.

There is good rising action, a climax and a definite resolution that leaves me satisfied with having just read a good book. This author also likes to define the setting, in this case a ski resort in Colorado. The setting sets the action for pursuit where and when necessary. The setting is essential to the story and not just included as a travel guide by the author to give us readers his sense of wanderlust.

Wolf and his team are back at it. The snow is falling, hard, almost as hard as the bodies that are starting to pile up in the small town of Rocky Points. A young girl is found murdered, the Mayors wife commits suicide, and business deals are starting to go off the rails. Are these somehow connected? Charlie Ash a member of the City Council is a snake of a man, that gets things to go his way, by any means necessary. But is he so corrupt that he would kill? In these Deadly Conditions only Wolf and his team of deputies will be able to get to the truth.

oh my gosh, I am so enjoying these mysteries! Every time I finish one, it makes me want to immediately start another. I am so glad they are stand alones, but I am, nevertheless, almost compelled to keep reading. I unknowingly started with book 8 and that just spurred me to know all about David Wolf's past. I guess I should have gone back and read from 1 on through, but that was not the case. Didn't spoil a thing for me. This book was another good read and now on to the next!

David Wolf is back in book four of the David Wolf series, and the town of Rocky Points once again is the home of corruption and crime. The first chapter describes the murder of a young female named Stephanie Lang, but the reader has no idea who is committing the crime. Next we are witnesses to a massive avalanche triggered by purposeful blasting, as Rocky Points experiences a winter of record snowfall. A funeral for the mayor's wife, who allegedly committed suicide, is scheduled within the next day or two. The main characters of the police force return in this engagement including Rachette, Patterson, Wilson, and Baine. Wolf's relationship that kindled in the previous book has cooled as a result of FBI agent Kristen Luke's move to Denver, although they are still in touch, and there seems to be a chance that Wolf's relationship with his ex-wife Sarah may revive. As with the first three books in the series, I raced through it; however, I rated it four stars instead of five. I felt that the depth of the character development and suspense were less compelling than the previous three novels.

Addicted to this David Wolf Series! Deadly Conditions was another fantastic book with David Wolf and his small town police department working on a case that left many in the town very puzzled. As their small town in Colorado (Rocky Points) braced for a very large winter storm, a killer amongst them decided to kill again. It wasn't until an unfortunate plow came through the streets on the hill, until the body was discovered. A killers mark had David Wolf on the trail of the killer, but it was a very unexpected journey and a very unexpected discovery of who was actually behind the whole thing! A marking on the bodies, or near the bodies, with a big Red X that got David to investigate further. Politics, bribery, blackmailing, scandal, sex, affairs -- all in the efforts to gain control in Rocky Points - but who was behind this killing?? Who was behind the killing a few years back in a separate town? How did they link together and put the details in place to discover who actually killed these people?

Again - a great read and I am excited to continue on with the David Wolf Series!

Enjoying the characters more than the plot in this book. That said, I enjoyed it. Being interrupted by family and friends over the holidays didn't help with keeping the flow going as there were a lot of new characters introduced, more than I thought were needed to effectively tell the story. It was fun discovering more about Rachette and especially Patterson which I liked. There is a lot of relationship cementing which will, I believe, hold up future stories. The ending is twisted very nicely for a fiction novel albeit it would not be legal in the real world methinks!

Do yourself a favour and find an uniterrupted day to enjoy this book. Concentration is needed but it is worth it.

This is the 4th in the David Wolf series. Bribery and corruption over a proposed condo complex are in edges of the Sheriff's mind but a murder with mysterious red X move those things to the background. Deep snow is falling, the slopes are filled. No room on the streets, a typical Colorado winter while Wolf runs into more dead ends on the girl's murder, then a 2nd one on top of the mountain, a high risk ski chase, threats, a number of people with issues. Wolf has to try to figure this out before more bodies pile up ... good read.

Wow! Easily my favorite of the first four David Wolf stories. In this one, Wolf and the Sluice County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a young waitress whose body was found along the roadside in deep snow. After this discovery we weave in some shady politics, some bribery, a hidden family secret, and of course, a few more bodies. This is by far the deepest and most thought-out Wolf story that Jeff Carson has written of the first four, and I can't wait to keep going with the series.

Why mountains?

I went to grade school in Prescott Arizona and tech school at Denver, so I have seen a few really big hills. They didn't make me feel small but they filled my head and heart with a constant awareness of their everlasting enormity. This background to my life and these stories gives a grand canvas on which to see the characters in proper perspective. The tales are filled with believable people skillfully woven into realistic situations. I will continue to willingly suspend any disbelief.

Good Mystery! Good Suspense! Different Ending!

What I liked was the twists and turns of the story, good plot, good layout. It keeps in suspense and definitely a good whodunit mystery. The actual turn of events though definitely took me by surprise because there was little introduction to the actual killer, and even after he's identified, there is not much in the way of background to connect the dots. Though the lack of information did lend to the mystery and suspended of the story. Still a good story with interesting interactions between characters.

Bit slow and then Acceptable.

The story was too long it's too many fillers Too many long stares out the window , and the actual action was compressed But his thoughts And he is been Drinking, Add Greasy hamburgers With fries.
There were some words that were just incorrect A couple of names were changed around , A better editing job was needed... I think a novel letter or a short story would have been good but Driving through the snow Everyday every way It was getting pretty boring..

The big snows in Colorado bring many problems for the sheriff department, but first the camping trip with David Wolf and his son is primary in his thoughts until they are attacked the first night as they settle in. This opened up a mystery of epic portion! Answering questions of a family who disappeared years ago, and the secrets the mayor of Rocky Points held for years! So, many different twists in this drama!

'Deadly Conditions' was another great addition to a fantastic series, 'David Wolf'. I like how the author writes with creative and descriptive scenes. Makes me want to go to Colorado. The story line was full of action, deceit, betrayal and great characters. Wolf is a great lead. I like his morals and his dedication to his job, his deputies and his friends and family. I look forward to reading more. A great add to your tbr list.

A very good read. I find myself reading his books way too fast because it is hard to put down. I love the characters and the scenery comes alive. I really enjoy all of the David Wolf stories & this one is no exception. After an epic snow storm the bodies start appearing & the Sheriff and his deputies have to figure it all out. It kept me guessing & reading. I'm heading over to buy the next one of Jeff Carson's books.

This was a pretty good police procedural taking place in a small ski resort town in Colorado. The protagonist, David Wolf, is a good guy, but he has issues needing a solution. The murder leads to uncovering political corruption and earlier deaths. I found the ski resort background info very interesting, but the murder mystery didn't really grab me the way other books have done. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood!

Entertaining Series Continues

This solid series has all it needs to provide an entertaining reading experience. As usual, the storyline is intriguing, the characters are varied and well developed, and the backdrop (rural Colorado) is awesome. The continuity of the main characters back stories works very well from book to book to keep the storyline flowing. Total reading entertainment! 4.5🌟

This one was different........in a good way !!!

Jeff Carson can 'spin a story' with the very best of writers !!
After 100's of books about lawyers, 'washed out cops', seasoned detectives and good guy/good woman respect where I usually have the ending figured out, it was refreshing to read about a 'sub plot' that I hadn't even considered !!
Thanks, Jeff Carson !! I look forward to tracing that through the next book of yours !!
Great Read, Recommend Reading !!

Book 4 in this fabulous series that I can’t stop reading! Sheriff David Wolf works in the ski resort town of Rocky Points, Colorado. When the body of a young woman is found hit by a snowplow, it’s just the beginning. Her face is marked by a red X on her forehead and they are worried the killer could strike again. Set during a major snowstorm, Wolf and his team work hard to uncover the killer, and a sordid tale is revealed. So good!

Book #4 in Jeff Carson's David Wolf series. Once again, no disappointment from this reader. Murders dressed up as suicides, extortion, criminal activities galore and a Sheriff trying to put all the pieces together and discover truth where truth is sometimes well hidden. I love to read a well written and well crafted book. Thanks again to Jeff Carson. Keep writing and I'll keep reading.

Intriguing

Deadly Conditions is a gripping thriller. It follows the first three books nicely.

Sheriff David Wolf is a great character that leads a team of deputies in Sluice County Colorado. He was a Ranger, but came home to follow in his father's footsteps and to be a better father to his own son, Jack. Wolf's character is well written and very likable.

This was not my favorite of the four installments in the Sheriff David Wolf series, but I still found it entertaining overall. I suppose my biggest criticism is that the criminal plot became overly entangled and complex among myriad characters, murders, and themes. Still, on balance, I think it deserves 4 out of 5 stars and Jeff Carson remains a 'go to' author in this genre.
