To Save My Daughters

Rate this book
A BRAND NEW emotional read from Louise Guy I loved him… but I loved my daughters more. I knew what I had to do. I had to protect them.

When June Marlow was arrested for the murder of her husband nearly thirty years ago, she feared she would never see her daughters again.

Terrorised by the man who claimed to love her, and too ashamed and humiliated to admit to years of abuse, June was found guilty, despite her claim that she’d acted in self-defence.

Now as June’s release date nears, while apprehensive about re-entering society, she’s excited to be reunited with her girls. But the little girls she left behind are now grown up, and while Lu is desperate for June’s homecoming, longing to feel her mother’s arms around her once again, her sister, Cole feels differently. She was there that night. And even though she was only ten years old, she has never forgiven her mother for what she did.

It’s meant to be a reunion. But the truths of the past have a way of finding their way to the surface; and June is harbouring more devastating secrets; secrets she prays will never be revealed.

Is a family wracked by lies and trauma about to find healing, or will it be destroyed forever?

June Marlow was so ashamed and humiliated to tell anyone her husband was abusing her, one night twenty eight years ago the violence escalated and she defended herself and protected her two daughters. June was convicted of murder, she was sent to jail and her girls were raised by their grandmother.

A nervous June has served her time and is due to be paroled, while her mother Elena and her daughter Lu have visited over the years, her oldest daughter hasn't and refuses see or forgive her. June has been hiding a secret and she’s not the only one and she sacrificed a lot for her children and did what she thought was the right thing at the time.

Lu a struggling artist and part time dog walker is excited her mum is being released and she can’t wait to give her a big hug. Cole feels very defiantly, a psychologist and trauma counsellor, she was ten when her mother killed her father and she’s never forgiven her. Cole hates how her mother being a murderer grabs the media’s attention, she’s worried about it happening again and then she finds out a TV network is considering doing a story on women in jail and she wishes they would mind their own business.

I received a copy of To Save My Daughters from NetGalley and Boldwood book in exchange for an honest review. One in every four women in Australia is a victim of domestic violence and Louise Guy story empathises how it can happen to anyone and in all walks of life and we don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

I really liked Lou and Ali and Luella, and Cole, Tori and June grew on me and they added diversity and alternate points of view to the narrative. Another five star read, a story with lots of highs and lows and made me think what I would do if I was in the same position as the characters and Louise Guy is well on her way to being Australia’s version of Catherine Ryan Hyde.

June Marlow had spent twenty eight years in prison for killing her abusive husband in self defense. She was protecting her two daughters, ten year old Nicole and six year old Lu. But the courts didn't believe her case of self defense; June's mother, Elena, cared for and brought the two youngsters up to where they were now, both adults. And now it was almost time for June's release back into society. While Lu and her grandmother had both visited June over the long years, Nicole couldn't forgive her for killing the father she had adored. She had no memories of the night, but didn't want to see or talk to her mother. What would happen now June was about to be released? And would the secrets June continued to hold close to her chest, remain hidden?

To Save My Daughters is an immensely powerful and highly topical story which was well-written, with great care and compassion by Aussie author Louise Guy. The characters played their roles extremely well, leaving no room for doubt about the heartache that had rippled through, not just June's family, but others as well. I always enjoy Ms Guy's novels, and this one was no exception. Highly recommended.

Be aware, that although this story is about domestic violence, there is nothing "in your face" at all.

With thanks to NetGalley & Boldwood Books for my digital ARC to read and review.

What would you do to save your daughters, if you are June Marlow you would do anything even murder your husband and get sentenced to life in prison, but she takes with her some secrets that she hopes will never be revealed her two daughters Nicole and Lu go to live with her mother Elena.

Twenty eight years later both her daughters are now adults and the eldest who now is known as Cole has not come to see her mother in all of those years blaming her for killing her beloved father, Cole is now a trauma councellor and she has blocked out what happened all those years ago as for Lu for is an artist and dog walker she has done her best to convince Cole to visit her mother sadly with no success she visits her mother often and is excited about the fact that she coming up for parole.

June is very nervous about being released but also looking forward to being with her family again, will Cole finally talk to her? The big issue with Cole is that she saw what happened that night, will she remember, will Cole open up and will June’s secrets stay safe?

This story is heart-breaking, heart-wrenching but told so very well, MS Guy has taken on a topic, domestic violence that plays a big part, sadly in our world today and done it justice in a caring and empathetic way. There are so many wonderful characters in this story, characters who show their strength as we turn the pages and get to know them, I would highly recommend this one.

My thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for my digital copy to read and review.

June Marlow has spent twenty-eight years in prison for killing her abusive husband. She was trying to protect her two daughters. June has served her time and she's due to be released. Her daughters had been raised by their grandmother. Her mother and daughter, Lu, visited June over the tears, but her other daughter Cole, hasn't seen her mother since the night her father was murdered.

The story touches on the feelings and emotions of domestic violence. A local TV station wants to do a report on the family's reunion. This is a well-written story. It's quite an emotional read. The women were strong characters. There were a few twists, nut there's areally good one near the end.

This is my 3rd book by Louise Guy and once again, she hits out of the park. June Marlow was arrested for murdering her husband and spent many years in jail. Both daughters remember the scenes differently so which is correct? Was it self defense? Was it planned? This had me on the edge of my seat all the way through and I really love how she tells a story. The ending was shocking! Thanks to NetGalley for this advance copy. To be published February 21, 2025.

This book was super good! It was emotional and a page turner, I really enjoyed the plot and the shocking relevations through the book. It speaks a lot on mothers love and everything they do for their kids. This also touches on the emotions and victims of domestic violence in a way that is communicated so well and informatively which is super important. I definitely reccomend it and will be processing this for a while!!

Big thanks to Louise for gifting us a copy to read and review.
Louise is one of this country’s leading authors in contemporary women’s fiction slash domestic drama with a twist.
I’ve read everything she has published and it’s all been five star quality reads.
Her name and books, will continue to be shouted from rooftops until I get horse.
June Marlow was found guilty and sentenced to spend the rest of her life in jail, thinking she will never see her daughters again.
June pleaded it was self defence to killing her husband.
Her mother, Elena raised the two children and is happy to know June will be back with them all.
Lu has been carrying the brunt of it all and is pleased her Mum is soon to be released.
Cole, her other daughter blames her mother for taking away her beloved father, she saw everything that fatal night and has never forgiven her.
June says that he was a manipulative and cruel man who was abusing her.
But she is holding on to more secrets and the past has a way of catching up with everyone….
An emotional family suburban drama that will get under your skin in the most welcoming way.
Louise’s writing is engaging, inspiring and totally entertaining.
Statistics are horrible for domestic violence and Louise highlights the fact in a compassionate way that it can happen to anyone and could be someone you know.
If you are not reading Louise Guy, you should be!

June Marlow made the ultimate sacrifice when she was wrongfully imprisoned for killing her abusive husband in an act of self defense. For twenty eight years, June has been cut off from her daughters, Cole and Lu, missing out on those opportunities that most take for granted.

Now up for parole, June is looking forward to picking up her life and reconnecting with her girls. Whilst the youngest of the two, Lu, is excited about her mum's release, it's eldest Cole who would prefer for June to be locked away. Being just ten when her dad died, Cole was old enough to understand what occurred and has always blamed her mother for killing her beloved dad.

To further complicate the situation at hand, June's release has captured media attention. A national current affairs program has picked up the story, placing popular journalist Tori at the forefront. Yet, Tori's involvement may lead to a much bigger fallout which could either be a blessing or a curse in disguise.

Either way, this family is about to embark on a path of forgiveness and healing after many years of dealing with trauma and regret. It's up to them on how to best deal with what life's hand deals with.

Once more, Louise has delivered an emotionally charged family drama that highlights an important social issue. This time, of course, is domestic violence. Whilst it's a pivotal part of the wider tale, it's not in your face, leaving us to connect with the characters flawlessly.

I did appreciate the classic Louise turn of events later on, which involves a character that you didn't think would have a deeper connection to others. It left me shock, same with another revelation towards the end.

Louise has conveyed mental health awareness especially well, in particular Cole's. Even though she now works in the system, she's never fully comprehended or dealt with her trauma properly. That's why Cole's story was the one I felt more drawn to.

Another great novel by an author that's becoming a firm favourite.

When you break the whole book down, it was a heartbreaking read. However, I found the first “twist” was obvious. I did not expect the last twist though.

I wanted to love this book as I’ve dealt with a lot of abuse in my past and think this book is a great platform for so many different victims of abuse. Your whole life could be changed with one decision. You could feel the abuse first hand. You could try and help the person who was abused. You could witness it and be so terrified to speak out when you’ve watched the abuse occur.

Although this book did hit on the abuse, I think I dragged out way too much before it got to the main subject.

Wow! This was very unexpected! June is close to being released from prison after serving a sentence for murdering her abusive husband. Whilst Lu, one of her daughters, has visited frequently, June hasn't seen her other daughter, Cole, since the night of the murder. Cole blames June for taking away her father and for the loss of her mother, with June having been incarcerated for the majority of the girls' childhoods.

A local TV station wants to do a piece on the family, to tie in with June's release, which will be covered by Tori Blackwood, a young and upcoming news reporter. Cole refuses to be involved, but when her job as a counsellor brings her into contact with two young girls in a similar situation, it makes her rethink her feelings about her own mother.

Meanwhile, just as I thought that's all there was to the story, a sweet and emotional reunion between June and her girls, there were some completely unexpected twists that took my breath away - brilliant!

4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Louise Guy and Boldwood for an ARC in return for an honest review.

OH. MY. WORD. I devoured To Save My Daughters in one sitting, completely captivated. If you're a fan of family dramas that delve into family secrets and the dysfunction it can create, I highly recommend reading this!

In this book, we meet June Marlow, a woman who has spent nearly thirty years in prison for the murder of her husband—a crime she claims was committed in self-defense to protect her daughters from his abuse.

As her release date approaches, June is filled with hope and apprehension about reuniting with her daughters, Lu and Cole. Lu, the younger daughter who is an artist, is eager to welcome her mother back, longing for the connection they once shared. In contrast, Cole, a trauma counselor, who was ten years old at the time of the incident, harbors deep resentment and unresolved trauma, having never forgiven June for what happened.

The story unfolds as a television crew becomes interested in documenting June's return, bringing long-buried secrets to light and forcing each family member to confront their past. One daughter is very much in favor of this idea; the other is dead-set against it.

To Save My Daughters stays with you long after the final page. It speaks to the enduring power of love and forgiveness.

Thank you to NetGalley, Louise Guy, and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this FIVE-STAR, "everything is not always as it seems" book in exchange for a review!

First, I want to thank Louise Guy, Boldwood Books, Rachel's Random Resources and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

WOW! Louise Guy To Save My Daughters is an insanely addicting powerful read that everyone will be talking about. As I was reading this book I could see the movie version play within my head. Seriously though this would be an amazing NetFlix series! This is a book that deserves way more than 5 stars and needs to be put on your TBR list. It is a must read. Louise is a very talented storyteller.

I appreciated Louise’s author note in the beginning of the book giving us readers a heads up that this book contains domestic abuse. Many authors don’t go above and beyond to forewarn their reader of such triggers.

How could you not feel empathy for the daughters in this book whose Mother killed their Father out of self defense? Then raised by their Gram? I can’t imagine watching your Mother kill your Father. After seeing my Dad die I can understand it messing you up emotionally.

To Save My Daughters is filled with deep, intense, suspenseful, powerful, heartbreaking storylines with important meanings behind them. Louise thought outside of the creative box when she wrote this and it is amazing!

The budding friendship between Ali and Lu really made me smile.

To Save My Daughter has many storylines within the storylines that are very detailed.

Louise’s climax to this book was the best I have ever seen in any book before. I was in shock and literally in tears as the revelation was coming to head!! My heart just broke when everything came to head during that scene.

I was excited to read this book based on the synopsis alone. I'm a sucker for anything prison or jail-related, and with the premise of domestic violence, this sounded promising. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I found some aspects underdeveloped.

One of my main issues was how quickly Cole forgave and reconnected with her mother. The resolution felt rushed, and it was unrealistic that their strained relationship could be mended in just one conversation and a single visit. The ending also wrapped up too easily, and the twist was predictable, which took away some of the tension.

While I didn’t initially want to read about a lesbian relationship, I was able to overlook it since it wasn’t the main focus of the story and wasn’t described in detail beyond a kiss. I do wish books came with content warnings—it would make things so much easier for readers who prefer to know about sensitive topics in advance.

Despite these flaws, I would still recommend this book. The premise was intriguing, and while some elements could have been stronger, it has a broader appeal beyond just fans of prison-related stories.

Thank you NetGalley, and Boldwood books for the opportunity to read and review this advanced copy.

To my shame I’ve never heard of this author before but when I was invited onto the blog tour I was immediately hooked by the book description . Can you even imagine spending almost 30
years in prison and leaving behind those you love the most . This is what happened when June Marlowe is given a 28 year prison sentence for the murder of her husband which she claims she acted in self defence . Now having been released she has to start a new life reconnecting with her family especially her 2 daughters Nicole and Lu and her mother Elena. When I started reading this book I expected to read a nice story of a family reuniting and how they all were there for each other when June was released . Well whilst this image I had was partly true, there was so much more than that in this book . It’s emotional , it’s a page turner and it had some twists that I honestly never saw coming . Each chapter kept me hooked and by the end of the book I just knew that I would be reading more by this author .

Happy Pub Day to Louise Guy and her book To Save My Daughters!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story takes you on a journey of how two sisters dealt with the imprisonment of their mother for killing their father. One sister is compassionate and understanding, while the other sister resents her mother and wants nothing to do with her.

After 30 years in prison, their mother is up for parole. Will she be released? How will each of the sisters cope with the possibility of their mother being set free?

I enjoyed this story and liked the characters. Louise Guy's style of writing is fantastic! The story is easy to follow and keeps you yearning for more!

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the advanced reader's copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

interesting premise

3.5 stars
This is an interesting story that I did find immediately engaging. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and they have both been well written.
There were definitely parts that were very predictable - though that wasn’t enough to spoil my enjoyment of the story.

For some reason I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Even the ones that were supposed to be sympathetic I didn’t always like and so in ways this story just didn’t reach me the way I would have expected and it meant I could put the book down easily. I wasn’t riveted to turning the pages.

There are hard topics covered in this story. In particular domestic violence is a main topic so if that is a trigger for you then you shouldn’t pick this one up.

Despite it lacking an emotional connection for me at times the story is an interesting one. If you are a fan of contemporary/women’s fiction then you should give this well written story a try.

I wanted VERY MUCH wanted to like this book, and it greatly saddens me that I did not. However, there is DEFINITELY an audience of readers that will greatly disagree with me. If you are a lover of Jodi Picoult, Cathrine Ryan Hyde, or even Colleen Hoover, you will, most probably, vehemently disagree with me; You will like this book.

I nearly abandoned it several times, but regretfully, stayed with it because I had been given the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC), thus finishing out my agreement. The one positive thing I can say about it is that it was a very brisk read.

Heavy in character development and dialogue, it was a rapid page turner, with many implausible twists and turns that will delight readers who love the above listed authors’ works. BUT for me…it all felt far too manufactured and contrived. I just did not care for its characters and as the twists were revealed, I became more and more disappointed. But that’s the wonderful element about books; they speak to us in so many different forms. Do not, however, let my punishing review stop you from reading it, nor enjoying it, as I may be in the minority here.

Thank you to author, Louise Guy, publisher, Boldwood Books, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are wholly my own. This book is due out for the general public on February 21, 2025.

When June made the ultimate decision to kill her husband not only did she get twenty-eight years in prison but she also lots her most important thing, her relationship with her two daughters. Now that time frame is about to be up however she is desperate to start new and reconnect with her family. June has always claimed self-defence for her crime and her one daughter, Lu, is fully supportive of her and even encouraging when a tv crew wants to do a special about her and her life etc. however the other two daughters aren’t as supportive and don’t want anything to do with her. I really liked the different perspectives and how the chapters were divided because it made the story much more complex and believable even though this was a fictional read. I loved how the sisters were all divided on their views of the mother and seeing where their loyalty fell was very powerful as you saw each of them struggle with the pain of losing their father but also the pain from their mother as well. When the tv crew starts to get deeper into what led to June’s crimes you really saw the family struggle with their beliefs a many of the truths start to come to light. It really left the reader pondering what was the right thing to do and seeing another side of the justice system. I liked this book as my opinions kept changing with each daughters’ side. Every time one would talk, I would understand her view but when it switched, I understood where the next one was coming from as well, so I didn’t know what to think, however that is part of what made this book so compelling and a fascinating read. I loved the way that each character was written with such depth and personality that I was completely drawn into this story. As I continued reading this book my views kept changing on what I believed really happened and I found myself understanding more and more why the characters were they way they were and why they did what they did. This was the kind of book that just envelopes the reader and makes you lose track of everything around you. I was desperate to get to the end of this book and see how it finished, however at the same time I didn’t want it to end. This book really shines a light on the fact that you never exactly know what is going on with someone behind closed doors. It is very easy for people to hide their pain from others and fake a smile and not everything that is seen on the outside is necessarily the truth. The ending left me spinning, in a good way. It was a very compelling read that I’m very glad I was given the opportunity to check out. I can’t wait for this book to be released and for everyone else to get to enjoy it just as much as I did.

**TRIGGER WARNING: Being imprisoned, estrangement, difficult family relationships, physical and emotional trauma in children and adults. Adoption and fostering. **

After My Sister's Baby, A Family's Trust and A Mother's Betrayal. I was really looking forward to another book by Loise Guy. Lu and her sister Cole have been through so much since their mother June was jailed for killing her husband in what she says is self defence.

Is it?

I'm glad that Louise Guy has a warning at the start of the book, as she deals with difficult subjects, which are the same ones that are in my trigger warning.

It's interesting to witness how both Lu and Cole try to get on with their lives, and I was hoping that they'd both be ok. Cole's work as a trauma counsellor at the Wellness Center was interesting. She and Mike make a good team. I also enjoyed how she ran the trauma group.

I liked the scenes where she was with Piper. Piper has a determined personality. and she's helpful. Her experience trauma, as well as her mother's and sister Katie's, was sad. I was concerned for them and their biological mother, Jacinta.

The community garden is a good place for people to meet and spend time.

I enjoyed the scenes at the cafeteria and the fact that Lu went there a lot. Ali was very welcoming, and Lu's art was good. I felt she was very talented. Ali was so considerate.

I liked Alex and Tory and their dedication to how to represent Lu, Cole, and June's story.

Their grandmother seemed a good person and the special bond they had with her as she brought them up really makes an impact.

I thought it was good that June and Doreen got on well.

The chapters in this book are quite long, but they're very detailed. This is neccesary and helps the book's plot. The pacing is quick, but I was able to keep track of it. It's perfect for a novel where I really wanted to know what was going to happen.

To Save My Daughters is another emotional novel with great attention to detail and it's an interesting plot that Cole is (quite rightly as you'll learn from the synopsis) concerned about June's return home, but Lu is looking forward to it. Both sisters are very different, but they get along well. I love the moments between them and their grandmother too. They are heartfelt.

Big themes are whether you can trust someone or not, learning to love and/or trust again, as well as trying to deal with trauma, secrets and lies. How each character deals with all this individually is another theme.

Tori’s backstory really shocked and saddened me. I'm glad she has her work colleague, Penny, as she is a great support to her.

Louise Guy deals with the themes very well, and, as always, gets inside the characters' heads.

5 stars.

Thanks to Louise Guy and Boldwood Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

To Save My Daughters by Louise Guy

I loved him, but I loved my daughters more. I knew what I had to do: I had to protect them.

When June Marlow was arrested for the murder of her husband nearly thirty years ago, she feared she would never see her daughters again. Terrorized by the man who claimed to love her and too ashamed and humiliated to admit to years of abuse, June was found guilty despite her claim that she had acted in self-defence.

As June's release date approaches, she feels apprehensive about re-entering society but is excited to be reunited with her girls. However, the little girls she left behind are now grown women. While Lu is desperate for her mother's homecoming, longing to feel June's arms around her again, her sister Cole feels differently. She was there that night, and even though she was only ten years old, she had never forgiven her mother for what she did.

What is meant to be a joyful reunion might unearth haunting truths from the past. June is harbouring devastating secrets that she prays will never be revealed.

Is a family burdened by lies and trauma about to find healing, or will they be destroyed forever?

From the author of books such as My Sister Baby and A Mother's Betrayal, Louise Guy delivers another well-written, unputdownable, atmospheric domestic thriller. The realistic characters genuinely bring this story to life. It is a brilliant read with a clever plot and a narrative that keeps giving. I have a deep admiration for Louise Guy, who is one of my favourite authors. Her storytelling consistently exceeds my expectations with each new book. I am already excited to see what she will offer next.

I want to thank publishers Boldwood Books, author Louise Guy and Rachel's Random Resources for providing a copy to read and review.

I was gifted this book to read from Louise and absolutely loved this storyline from start to finish.

The story revolves around a mother called June who has an abusive husband and spends 28 years of her life in jail for murdering him. She leaves behind 2 daughters aged 10 and 6 and her own mother called Elena who is left to bring up the girls as best she can.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and when I read, I actually visualise the characters and places that they go to. It's like watching a movie whilst I read so when this happens, I know I am reading a very good storyline.

Whilst June is in prison for all that time only her youngest which is Lu and her mum visit her. The daughter aged 10 blames her mum for killing their much loved dad and refuses to visit her.

There is a character in the storyline called Tori who is doing a report on June and how victims of abuse are put in jail for just defending and it's not called murder if you are protecting your family. June was wrongly accused and writing this story, there is a possibility of helping others out there in the same predicament.

I won't say much more as the storyline has many twists and turns that will wholeheartedly capture your attention and you just want to keep reading. I didn't guess the outcome till towards the end of what was happening. It really is a page turner when reading this book.

This novel is so well written and Louise certainly went out above and beyond to get facts of people that have been abused. The characters throughout reading are very easy to all bond with and love. I had adrenaline reading this story.

I also love the cover which fits well to the storyline. Just beautiful.

Holy cow. This is an incredible story. It gave me the chills. I cannot say enough good things about it. This is an incredibly raw and powerful story about a mother’s unwavering love for her children and her ultimate sacrifice to protect them. It highlights the emotional turmoil experienced by those in abusive relationships and emphasizes the importance of seeking support and resources.

After enduring years of abuse, June Marlow kills her husband in self-defense, though she lacks the evidence to back up her claim. Fast forward twenty years later, to June’s impending release date. Luella and Nicole, June’s daughters, are forced to confront their own confusion and unease surrounding the night their father was as murdered and the lasting impact his death and their mother’s imprisonment has had on their lives afterwards.

Lu is an artist, and expresses her grief and pain through art. As a trauma therapist, Nicole helps others navigate their own trauma but struggles to confront her own. Cole can’t remember that night and harbours resentment for her mom, believing that she destroyed their family. During her work, Cole encounters a little girl who has experienced a similar situation. As Nicole helps the little girl, she also learns how to cope with her own experience.

I really loved the ending. It is really heartfelt and focuses on the strength and resilience of the family and the coming together to heal and rebuild after a life-altering traumatic event.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this fantastic arc. I highly enjoyed this book. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

June Marlow was arrested for killing her husband 30 years ago. She said she did it in self-defense, but no one believed her because her husband was well thought of in the community, and she hid the facts of the abuse that was happening. Her two daughters were there the night it happened, and they went to the Granny's house, and she went to prison. Thirty years later, she is still in prison, and a news station wants to do a story about mothers in prison from being abused, how it affects the family, and the trauma and what it does to them.
When they started talking about it, Cole, the oldest daughter of June, has never gone to see her mother, and hasn't seen her since the night she killed her Dad. Lu, the youngest daughter, and her Granny would go visit her. Tori, the reporter, wants June, Cole, and Lu to be part of the show. They agree, and then it gets emotional, secrets come out, what the trauma did to each one. They had no idea where this was going to go, but they faced it, and sometimes it was hard to read, but they each had to go through it to come out at the end of this part of their journey. For things to change, then you have to change. It is a book that some people are going to have a hard time reading, others, will read it and see there is more help now when you are being abused, and there is help for the children, and it causes trauma that is now out in the open, and people can face it and make it through.
I received an ARC from Boldwood Books through NetGalley.

Louise Guys newest novel once again had me turning those pages rapidly until I finished! June Marlow has spent almost 30 years in prison for confessing to murdering her abusive husband, leaving 2 small children to be cared for by their grandmother. June has lost connection with her eldest daughter as she blames her mother for killing her much loved father. Her other daughter has kept in touch with her in prison all those years.

Tori is an investigative journalist who is keen to do a expose on women behind bars escaping domestic violence. She is told about June by a work colleague and is keen to pursue this as June is nearing parole and being released from prison.

This novel was engrossing from beginning to end and quickly you were drawn into the lives of Cole & Lu who were June's daughters and also Tori, the journalist. Being set in Melbourne was a bonus as I could relate to the locations mentioned in the novel.

As the book went on secrets were revealed that would affect all the women mentioned and just when you thought there was a satisfying ending to this novel, a twist evolves that I didn't see coming at all - this is what readers love in a book!

Having read all Louise's novels, I have to say her writing just gets more captivating with each book, highly recommended for readers of women's fiction and domestic suspense. 5*

Twenty eight years ago June Marlow pleaded guilty to the murder of her abusive husband. Fearing for the safety of herself and her two daughters she killed him in self defence. June was so ashamed, and with her self esteem battered, she had never confided in anyone about the abuse so her plea of self defence was ignored. Her daughters lost both parents on that fateful night and were brought up by June's mother. The oldest refusing to have any contact with June since she was arrested.

There are multiple themes running through this heart wrenching tale. The victim of domestic abuse ending up behind bars with a life sentence for murder, how experiencing trauma can affect your later life, the love of a mother for her children and the lengths she would go to protect them. I was enthralled by the writing, genuinely struggling to put the book down. Despite the distressing premise the book is full of compassion, emotion, sadness but also hope. There are some unexpected moments along the way which were neatly woven in, maybe a touch too neatly. Connections that were almost too contrived. That said, this is still a thought provoking, very well written story.

With thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my advanced reader copy in return for my honest and unbiased review.

WOW - Sensitive, real, beautifully written, BRILLIANT.
This is an incredible book, inspiring, sensitive, heart stopping, thought provoking and wonderful.
The characterisations are excellent. Nothing is forced but the incredible message is real and powerful. Lots going on but you never lose track as it is so well written.
Enough has been said about the plot that I don't think it needs me to add any more but it is a book that will be remembered for a very long time.
Louise Guy's books ARE memorable, well written and real but this must be her best yet - and that is high praise.
All the characters are real and resonate in different ways - I have never been put in any of the difficult situations these people were but I was able to understand the grief and the joy and feel part of the story. The research necessary has been done perfectly - I can only imagine how much research was required to make this so authentic.
I can't recommend this too highly - it is a brilliant book and one that I feel will resonate with the reader for a very long time after the last word is read.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

Society needs to make it more stream lined to discuss and mention abuse, physical, mental and emotional abuse, not blaming or questioning why people stay or how they stay so long or the results of trying to take back life. Whilst the youngest of the two, Lu, is excited about her mom's release, the eldest Cole who would prefer for June to be locked away. Being just ten when her dad died, Cole was old enough to understand what occurred and has always blamed her mother for killing her beloved dad or maybe she blocked so much out. This book is good for book clubs and having discussions that will open dialogue as well as questions regarding actions. This is a thought provoking book that has many layers to it. Many thanks to Netgalley the author and publisher for the opportunity.

June Marlow was arrested for the murder of her husband almost thirty years ago. Alan was about to attack her and she had to act in self-defense. Keeping the abuse secret for years did little to help June's insistence that she was a battered wife and had to kill him to save herself and her daughters. Now twenty years later June has served her time and hoping to repair the fragile relationship with her daughters. When a local TV station wants to do a story on the bound to be emotional homecoming, can June and her daughters overcome their shared past and look forward to a happy, healthy, and healing future?

This is such a heartbreaking and emotional novel! Dealing with a very difficult subject of domestic violence is never easy but the way Guy writes this as delicately as possible is brilliant. A story filled with sorrow and secrets but also love and hope.. definitely recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley, Louise Guy, and Boldwood Books for this ARC. Expected publication day is February 21st 2025.
