Escaping a city of zombies is one thing. Escaping a whole country of them is something else. Tom Goode finds himself alternately hunted and haunted by the dead. Only a handful of survivors are left to join him on the perilous route out of London, and they have little to defend themselves with other than hope. A host of deadly creatures is emerging alongside the relentless zombies, a result of the infection that is destroying the world. Hearing of the British Navy’s plan to attempt one final rescue just off the coast, Tom struggles to lead his group to the rendezvous in time. In their way stands Lazarus, a ruthless man defended by a desperate band of thugs and convicts. With Lazarus’ army standing between Tom and safety, he will have to use every ounce of strength to survive. The journey to the future starts now.
Russ Watts was born in Peterborough, England. At Manchester University he obtained a degree in Russian before forgetting it all as he travelled the world, putting off getting a real job for as long as possible.
He now lives with his wife in New Zealand; writing horror stories, reading horror novels, and watching horror films, waiting for the inevitable collapse of man into a zombie-filled hell.
I really loved the first book "Devouring the Dead" a fresh take on a zombie apocalypse and based in London so it felt more real and "at home" for me than all the usual American zombie novels. Devouring the dead 2 continues the story and reunites us with Tom from book one and some of the other survivors who were trying to make it out of London and possibly across the channel to France.
This book keeps the suspense going and is mainly based in Cornwall and throws in some unexpected twists, aliens, the US and British navies and DNA being horrifically twisted and perverted. A fantastic cliffhanger of an ending and sets itself up for book three. Can't wait! Highly recommended British Zombie fiction.
Be prepared that some characters come and go in this second book. Some cringe moments that are so well done, great zombie attack scenes, and times when you just don’t know what the heck the characters can do to get away from the flesh eaters. But more comes now, and from horror we start to another threat - be prepared for a surprise!
