“One thing I learnt early…don’t meddle with anything that isn’t human…that’s never been human…trust me on that.”
The walls between Charlie White’s real life and purgatory are thinning. The realm beyond is increasingly affecting not only her, but her closest companions. The danger deepens the more her two worlds collide.
Charlie has been warned there is more to the Dream than she can comprehend in this life. She knew she was not alone in limbo, but she never dared to seek out the others. One of them, though, is about to find her. Dragging her further into the world beyond.
As she fights not just for her life, but for the lives of her friends, Charlie is forced to question her deepest fears and desires. How long can she hold onto those she loves? What does it mean to be betrayed? And when does justice become malevolence?
probably has to be one of JJs best yet out of the whole series. once again JJ managed to draw me in with her magical story telling, making me love australia even more.
I absolutely loved how JJ managed to tell so many stories in one and yet not once did it confuse me as JJ has a way of bringing everything all together in the end.
I love how each new book introduces us to new spirit colours and the tale of how the spirit came to be.
In the 3rd instalment this main story focussed around a black spirit/soul who was deemed malevolent and just reading the journal and tragic love story that surrounded the characters made the story more emotional than its counterparts.
I am now onto book 4 and I cannot wait to see what JJ has in store
Like steps into a swimming pool, Carpenter guides you deeper and deeper into Charlie’s world. The Forgotten is the third in a six book series and Carpenter brilliantly eases the reader into this - when you think it can’t get any bigger, it does! I can get put off easily if the world building feels overwhelming, but I have not found that to be the case at all. The twist(s) in this got me! They were so unexpected and broke you down.
This is definitely the most emotional one yet! A beautiful love story that aligns with Charlie’s feelings for Tess and makes the reader wonder about their future. We also start to question certain... things about Charlie.
In The Forgotten we meet a new character and learn about some new spirits. Without saying too much, the inclusion of Midnight Spirits and the tenderness in addressing them means a lot to me, and will mean a lot to many other people too. (It feels important to mention without spoling). I didn’t find Raff too annoying - if anything, I found quite a lot of me in him (well, maybe just the slang! I love a good nah-yeah / yeah-nah).
I am a huge fan of Carpenter’s writing and highly encourage anyone to try her books - even if you don’t usually read horror! Her writing is much more than scares.
Thanks to JJ Carpenter for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Forgotten is now the third installment in The Corner of Her Eye series, and I really had a fun time reading this one! This is much darker than the previous two installments, having to do with Black Spirits, who were betrayed prior to their deaths, making them the most malicious. The research involved in these novels never ceases to amaze me, and I love learning about Australia's rich history. I feel like with each novel, not only do we learn about a moment in history, but the stakes continue to rise for our main characters as the situations and Spirits become more dangerous.
I also love the side stories that JJ Carpenter includes along the way - this time it involved a patient named Jane, who was treated at a special hospital to help people with Tuberculosis, which was a massive problem in those days. She was extremely troubled prior to her death, and she is what is called a Midnight Spirit. Her story was so incredibly heartbreaking, and sadly seems all too common even today, especially with where my country seems to be headed.
This has been my favorite installment so far, and I can't wait to see what Charlie, Tess, and Trent discover next!
I loved it! I didn’t want to get to the end, but it was also really good to have the mysteries resolved. This instalment of the Corner of Her Eye series shares more about Charlie’s spiritual powers and her understanding of the spirit world. It also introduces us to some new types of spirits that Charlie hasn’t met before. Some of the story is quite dark and deals with difficult topics like domestic violence but nothing is done for the shock value. It’s very integral to the story. The story focuses much more on the spiritual mystery in front of Charlie, and the related Australian history, than on the relationships with her friends, as has been done in the past books. I hope we get more with them and the development of those relationships in later books (the author promises in the acknowledgments that there are three to come!). But that aside, it’s an excellent story that pulls you in and keeps you on tenterhooks until the final page. Thoroughly recommend to any lovers of ghost stories/supernatural fiction/Australian historical fiction/mysteries.
This is the third book in the series and the series is about a lady who, due to a life threatening allergy has to move to a relative isolated and safe place, rural Australia. But as strange occurrences start happening in her 1920s cottage, and she realises she's not alone and she has to find a way to help the restless sprits.
I'd describe them as quiet historical horror with some chilling moments.
So you really need to read the first two books to get the most out of this one, and if you have read the others then you know most of characters already, and have a good idea what to expect as far as feel and writing go’s.
This book in the series is about black spirits / souls, who have been betrayed and are malevolent and dangerous.
I love the way the story builds up as the mystery unfolds with everything weaving together beautifully for the climax at the end.
I have the forth on my shelf ready to go, and have my sites set of the rest of the series.
"One thing I learnt early…don’t meddle with anything that isn’t human…that’s never been human…trust me on that." The Forgotten is book three in The Corner of Her Eye series. "The walls between Charlie Whites real life and purgatory are thinning". This was an amazing book in this series and I was turning pages until the very end. I loved the plot of this one a lot and the author wrote this really well. It has all the spooky vibes and was a great read for the Halloween season. I loved this book a lot and would recommend the series but also this book to any reader especially if you like supernatural fiction. Thank you to the author for this ARC read in exchange of my honest review of The Forgotten.
I have enjoyed this series from book 1 but this one is by far my favorite.
All of the story lines have been intriguing. This particular one surrounds a couple nurses at a TB Sanatarium and that is right up my alley! Like I’ve mentioned in reviews for the past 2 books, I didn’t realize historical horror was a thing but I AM HERE FOR IT.
The introduction of a new character had me feeling all sorts of emotions as the author fleshed out this addition so well. And of course I love our motley crew that’s been there since the start. They feel like old friends now.
I teared up, I laughed, I was anxious. Everything you look for in a gripping novel. Can’t wait for the next installment!
Just when I thought this series couldn’t get any better this book comes along and proves me wrong. IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER! I enjoyed the first two books in this series quite a bit but this one really takes the cake!
There’s definitely a darker vibe to this book and I really liked getting into the history of TB sanatoriums. We even get a new character introduced into the mix which was interesting, but I’ll always love our OG gang from the first two books. A solid supernatural read that will make you feel…well…all of the feels.
The third in the series and I can’t wait for the next one! These ghosts are cruel, tormented and hard to read about as they wreak havoc in Charlie’s life. Tess bears the brunt of the blacks attention which was hard to read. I have grown to love these characters through the three books and Ned to know how this series ends.
I did struggle with Raff as a character as he was so different. He grated with me almost as much as he did with Charlie. My opinion of him did change and I have a feeling he will make another appearance in a letter book.
My favourite book in the series so far! I couldn’t put it down. Such a good mystery (again) and a beautifully heart breaking story that challenges your perception of the characters. Full of rich history and spooky new aspects of Charlie’s world.
Another fantastic story in the series about Charlie and her friends. This one was the most emotional one so far and I felt scared for Tess in particular. Such a good read, diving straight into book four!
