Emily Rodda (real name Jennifer Rowe) was born in Sydney, Australia and graduated from the University of Sydney in 1973 with an MA (Hons) in English Literature. Moving into a publishing career, first as a book editor, and finally as a publisher at Angus & Robertson, Rodda's first book was published in 1984.

Middle grade, Adventurous, Mysterious, Quick read

I love it when I can read a novel in a day, it meant it's so captivating that can hold you in one place to finish it. these books are always like that for me (I can't remember how long my first read took, but in my rereads, I did that a lot, sometimes even in one sitting, one evening)

I was worried that now I'm older, I might not like this series anymore, not as much as I loved it in my teen years. the thought itself was frightening enough to keep me away from re-reading! but when I started it, I saw that Nostalgic love can never be extinguished. I missed them so much. missed the thrills, the adventures, the characters.

it makes me sad that this amazing series is not so well-known to the readers all around the world, so I'm writing this review under book 1 of the series (as I've already written a full-Deltora review in details Here) , to show my favourite to readers with my gratitude. Because this book, maybe simple yeah, it might even felt rushed, but surly promises a Potential adventurous series with more thrills & surprises in next books, when the story intertwined with riddles & ingenious wordplays, unravels slowly. if you like middle grades.

a story about magic of the Gemstone intrigue me & when it adds up with mysteries & adventures, bravery & great characters, it'll become my ultimate favourite.
a fast pace series of events to save Deltora from the grasp of the choking rule of the Shadow Lord, traveling to the most dangerous places of the land to retrieve the magical gemstones.

the Enemy is clever and sly, and to its anger and envy a thousand years is like the blink of an eye.

(did you get goosbumps too!? me every time that I come across these sentences!)


Maybeeeee... if I'd discovered this series right now, at age 28, I wouldn't like it as much as I do because it is my Nostalgic teen years to escape the stress of reality.
so I'm grateful I found it in my early days!
I love it of course, as I said above, still having the same emotions as my first read, I just now know & want to admit that it's simple, maybe more middle grade-ish for my adult taste. (at least book 1, I probably would've rounded down to 3 instead of rounding up. so beware if you're an adult & you come across this series for the first time.)
but totally a recommendation for young teens.

& telling you, I do love good middle grades.


this one isn't my favourite in the series, but an enjoyable ride.
first half of this one is a history introduction to the world, which was also nice, actively reliving the past to arrive at point zero, when the present story has begun & introducing the characters.
Clever boy, Lief, sometimes stupid & reckless, but brave, planner & lovely.
Brave frank Jasmine, they couldn't even make through book 1 without her!
& Brave Barda.
the second half, just as I always love, the actual action though little, starts. first destination of the dangerous journey.
& this stunning hair-raising cover.

من اخیرا شروع کردم شاهنامه رو بخونم، و دیشب یه فکری در ذهنم جرقه زد که منو ذوق زده کرد و اون این بود که احتمال داره خانم رودا شاهنامه رو خونده باشه؛ نمیگم این جموعه ریتلینگه، اما یه سری شباهت های کوچولو، در حد اشاره، بین این داستان و یک سری داستان های شاهنامه پیدا کردم؛
آدین آهنگر بود و از مردم عادی (مثل کاوه آهنگر)
حکومت ارباب سایه ها خیلی شبیه جامعه ضحاکه؛ تیره و تار و پر از خفقان. به علاوه که حکومت ضحاک هزار سال دوام داشته، و اینجا بارها گفته شده در سرزمین سایه ها چشم طمع به دلتورا دوخته بود- در برابر حسادت و طمع او هزاران سال مانند یک چشم بر هم زدن است
بارها گفته شده: دشمن شکست خورده، اما نابود نشده است (من اغلب با جاودان بودن کاراکترا مشکل دارم، اما ارباب سایه های مرموز همیشه یکی از شروران موردعلاقه منه)
سنگ های مفقودشده در 7 تا از خطرناکترین مکانهای دلتورا مخفی شدند (می تونه اشاره ای به هفت خان رستم باشه)
هفت قبیله می تونه اشاره داشته باشه به هفت قلمروی جهان
فریدون مخفی شده، 16-17 سالشه (مثل وارث)
جاسمین قیافه اش(تا حدی) شبیه شرقی هاست؛ موهای مشکی و مجعد
بعضی اسماشون تا حدی به اسمای ایرانی شبیهه (مثل همین آدین یا جاسمین)
بازم میگم ممکنه اینا فقط خیال ذهن من باشه برا مرتبط کردن دو تا موضوعی که خیلی دوسشون دارم (کلا من از ارتباط پیدا کردن یه داستان با زندگی خودم یا با چیزایی که دوست دارم و پیدا کردن سرنخ هایی که وجود داره، لذت می برم) اگه شما قبول ندارین، مشکلی نیست) بالاخره این نکات ذره ای در این دریای فانتزی هستن و این جوری نیست که همینا مختص فردوسی باشه (بالاخره همه قهرمانها سختی میکشن، هفت عدد خیلی معروفیه، خفقان جامعه در داستانها وجود داره)، به علاوه که این داستان فردوسی (فریدون و ضحاک و کاوه آهنگر) بیشتر حماسیه اما این مجموعه افسانه ای و فانتزی و میدل گرید، ولی جالبه و این فکر واقعا منو خوشحال کرد که ممکنه نویسنده محبوب من شاهنامه رو خونده باشه و این مجموعه دوست داشتنی و نوستالژی حتی برام عزیزتر شد

In this fantasy story for young readers, a boy is tasked with overthrowing the evil Shadow Lord by restoring a powerful artifact. It's a quest with many steps, so only a small part of the quest is covered in this book. Overall, it is a fun read, but nearly half the book is a prologue to the story, so it takes a long time to get the story started. Hopefully, the following volumes will get to the action more quickly than this Ione.

This was one of my favorite book series as a teen and was the book that really got me into reading fantasy. It's technically considered a children's fiction book, but if you are interested in YA books don't let that scare you off as it's an excellent piece of fantasy writing. I recently read this book for the third of fourth time after a very long hiatus of reading hundreds of other YA and Adult fiction and I'm pleased to say that it holds up very well.

The series starts with a king and his best friend living a sheltered life. An evil (possibly demonic?) king appropriately named the Shadow Lord rules over the neighboring Shadowlands (see what they did there?) and has been trying to take over the land of Deltora for generations. The only protection that can keep away this evil king is a belt forged with 7 magical gems but when nefarious deeds cause the belt lose it's power it is destroyed and the gems are spread across the land each protected by an evil monstrous guardian. The Shadow Lord invades the country and a generation passes before the son of the king's best friend can take up the quest to find these lost gems. Each book details the travels of this teen and his battle against one of the guardians for a new gem.

The first book is very interesting, but somewhat light on action as much of the story is being set-up. The books themselves are short, easy reads though and the amount of set-up is similar to what a much larger book would typically entail. If you have any interest in high fantasy writing full of magic, monsters and battles please give this a shot. It's available at many bookstores and libraries as a package where the first 4 volumes (out of 8) are collected together. The series has done so well that it has evolved from a standalone 8 book series to something much larger.

There is also an anime based on the original series, a Japanese video game and a couple side books that flesh out the lore a bit (Book of Monsters, Art books, ect).

It's an extremely popular series in Australia that's never quite taken off in America so if you can give it a chance. You will not regret it.

While cleaning out my closet, this is one of the books that caught my eye. I still have most books I read in my youth. Many of them have rewarded me with some very fond memories. This book is not one of them. Honestly, didn’t remember what this book was about. So I decided to read it again and see if it actually is a book worth remembering.


A long time ago, the evil Shadow Lord was defeated by the magical belt of Deltora. Nowadays, the belt is only used during the coronation of a new king. It’s original purpose is almost forgotten. The Shadow Lord sees his chance to retaliate and capture Deltora once and for all. When the king needs it most, he finds himself betrayed as the magical gems that power the magical belt are gone, spread all across the most dangerous parts of the country. The son of the king’s best friend is then charged with finding and recovering the lost gems to restore the power of the belt.


The first third of the book reads like a very long prologue. This is not necessarily bad as it is a pretty good way of showing instead of telling the readers everything they need to know about this world and the quest that will follow, before the story actually starts. But it does cut away some room for the main characters to properly develop. And the quest of the week in this book to collect the first gem feels a bit too easy because of it.


Overall, not a bad start to a series though a little light as a standalone novel.

I decided to re-read this to see if I could clear the series off of my shelf and NOPE! I still love the writing. Gonna re-read the rest and still Keepers. Re-read January 2024.

I picked this book up off of my shelf late at night, with the intention of going to bed after I finished it. It was a good thing I had the rest of the series as well, otherwise I would have had to find a book store open at 11 o'clock at night! The Deltora Quest series is amazing. Once you start it, you will not want to put it down. The character development is believable and the world that Rodda has created is well-developed and lush with danger and magical creatures. I wish I had picked up the B&N hardcover editions, because these are keepers and I think after re-reading them and loaning them out to friends, the hardcovers might last a little longer.

I have just picked up the Deltora Shadowlands and Dragons books and I am saving them for a day when I can read them straight through. I highly recommend them all!

با این که خوندنش سرگرمی خوبی بود اما هیچ خلاقیت چندانی توی داستان ندیدم. گره ها چقد سریع باز می شدن چقدر مشکل ها زود و بی دردسر حل می شدن و امان از بی جزئیاتی... توی این سبک داستان ها ذائقه ی من لا اقل شخصیت پردازی های ظریف، فضا سازی های پیچیده و از همه بیشتر توصیفات ریز به ریز وقایع رو می طلبه و می پسنده اما توی این کتاب نویسنده انگار یه مروری بر داستانی داشت که قبل تر یکی دیگه مفصل ترش رو نوشته
ولی خب بعد مدت ها یه قصه خوندم. حال داد.

I can't even tell you how much joy rereading this series gives me. It was the series that first got me into reading when I was 10 years old, and it still holds up as an adult. What an adventure!

I have so many things I'm supposed to be reading right now, so obviously I spent the past holiday weekend at my parents' house binge-reading a kids' series about a team of intrepid heroes collecting magical gems in order to banish the evil Shadow Lord from the land of Deltora. I'm here to tell you: it's still great! Sure, my perspective is heavily tinged by nostalgia, but it holds up even without! Dramatic adventures, tricky puzzles, hidden identities, eerie settings, and nigh-unbeatable villains - what's not to love? There's darkness without overwhelming grimness, and honestly a lot more heart than I remembered. 10/10 - Deltora is worth the return visit!

I mean, it was a pretty solid beginning of a middle grade—no even younger—fantasy series. Emily Rodda was my and my sister’s favorite author when we were kids, around 7 or 8. I remember finding Deltora really scary, and I was absolutely obsessed with the world. I’m pretty sure I had all the extra books and even a few scholastic knickknacks centered around the series that you could get at the scholastic book fair. Anyone remember those? That was always the best week of elementary school.

Anyway, half the book was a prequel to set up the actual series, following the parents of the main character as they escaped the palace right before the fall of the empire and the Shadow Lord took over. Clearly this was juvenile but I still found it really entertaining. My only gripe is that apparently Emily Rodda hates using contractions?? There was literally not a single contraction in the entire book. It got old pretty fast but hey to each their own.

I can’t remember all the books but I do remember that my favorite one was the one where they were going after the Opal simply because I love opals, being my birthstone and all. The monsters and mythology are so unique that I have to credit Rodda for that, well done indeed. I think it’ll be pretty fun to reread the rest of the series.

What a nice, quick read. This is a great fantasy novel for 7-10-year olds. First half of the book is about the protagonist's dad. The second half is very the action starts and the three main characters meet. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

My sister and I both read these in fourth grade (I graduated high school this May, for reference), and to this day they rank among our favorite series read, ever. And we both have read a LOT of books.

I forget the plots and the characters names and what even the major point of the quest was... but I do remember the fantastic time that I had reading these books. I remember running to the Childrens' section of Barnes and Noble and hoppping up and down waiting for my dad to buy us the next book, and physically fighting with my sister to read it first (this was before my dad set up the foolproof rotation system we later set in place to ensure peace in the household). I remember reading these books in class underneath my desk, completely engrossed. That is, until the teacher yelled at me for not paying attention to the lesson. I continued reading the next day anyway, the books were so damn good.

I'm sure that if I went back now and read these books, they would lose their magic for me. They're intended entirely for children, and to rate them on an adult's scale is to do them a gross injustice.

Let your child read the first book, and I can bet you you'll have a new and excited reader in the house.

Read digitally from my school's library database in one sitting. I was obsessed with these books as a kid, and remember being a little miffed when the anime came out because I felt (as an edgy teen) I was simultaneously 'too old' to fully enjoy the adaptation, and didn't agree with the artistic direction because Lief's hair was the wrong colour (as if!). Most young Australians growing up in the early 2000s read these with similar voracity to the Harry Potter books (almost as though the Deltora series was a stepping stone to getting into the fantasy genre for youngsters) and I remember new releases being circled religiously in those Scholastic book club flyers by myself and my peers pretty much immediately. These books remain a really solid read for primary-school aged students and they still hold up so well despite being written 25 years ago. Sure, the first one is a little slow at first, but the pacing is really solid and the characters are likeable and relatable enough for younger readers. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of these rapid fire now I know I've got access to them!

The journey begins, and what a journey it is! Rodda doesn’t skimp on the action, the twists or the writing quality.

We open with a daring escape in the prologue. Then, in one of my favourite scenes in the entire series, we’re introduced to our hero, Lief, who’s stayed out after curfew. After pulling off another miraculous escape (a good example of Rodda’s trademark foreshadowing/repetition of scenes), he and an unlikely companion go on a quest to find the seven gems of the Belt.

The wonderful thing about Lief (looking at you, Paolini) is that he really is an everyman, but he’s such an endearing one that it’s impossible not to like him. He feels very human, and that’s the most important thing. This book is really more of an introduction, but his character never really changes. If I had to name a weakness of these books, it would be that the character development really isn’t there, except maybe in Jasmine.

The climax of The Forests of Silence isn’t as good as the next books, and its monster is very good, but not as compelling as some of the others. Jasmine shines here, but her best moments are in later books.

That being said - this is how you write Newbery-worthy children’s lit, Rowling.

To read Rodda is to read a master at work. No words are wasted. People and things mentioned in passing at the beginning of one book spring into prominence three chapters later, and not in the “I wrote this while drunk on sambuca” way.

Do I sound like L. Ron Hubbard yet? This series is criminally underrated and it needs a publicity boost.

Jest to pozycja dla dzieci, młodzież i to widać. Ta prosta fabuła trochę mi przeszkadzała. Wszystko działo się za szybko i zbyt łatwo, a niekiedy przewracałam oczami na to co się tam dzieje. Jednak ciekawość co dalej to trochę miałam. W sumie nawet bardzo szybko się czyta, bo pochłonęłam książkę prawie w jeden dzień.

Nie wiem, czy chcę kontynuować serię. Chyba że sięgnę po tom drugi i wtedy zadecyduję.

3⭐️ when I was a kid, I've always wanted to be Jasmine even tho I'm shit scared of insects.

I wished I had parents who allowed me to wonder to dangerous places and go on adventures. Imagine how great that'll be........ AS IF. I'D BE SHITTING MY PANTS AND BE DEAD WITHIN 5 MINUTES INTO THAT FOREST. But honestly, having parents that allows you to go places at the age of 16 to find gems for the belt of deltora to cast away the shadow lord is like every fantasy reader come true. Obviously, Barda (he's like a bodyguard and a bestie to Lief dad) is by his side, and his parents trust him, so he's technically not alone. If I had him as a bodyguard, he'd be so sick of me and would leave me to the wennbar for the feast. (they're like giants beast and not pretty creatures)

I at least watch this series once a year, and till this day, it's still my all-time favourite. Giving it a 3 because it's mostly info dumping (in the best way), but it's an amazing introduction towards this series. My brothers and I used to have all her books as a collection and would read them frequently. We were obsessed, still are. Sad that I don't have them all but a few. I cherish the DVDs. How else would I binge watch?😊😊

I had a fat crush of Lief when I was 8, hence why I wanted to be Jasmine🤭🤭 Barda is such a father figure even tho Lief parents are very much alive but he's so caring and he's like a papa bear. Jasmine's backstory wasn't explained as much as it did in the show, but I at least know it, so I'm not too mad at that. As I read on, I hope I find something from her that I don't know yet. She lives in the forest after grey guards (ones that work for the palace) took her parents and lives alone with her raven, creed, and a siskis, filli. Trust me, they're such cuties. One thing that irked me was when Lief and Barda got paralysed in the forest, it didn't explain why Jasmine all of a sudden saved them after stealing their stuff. In the show, a spirit tree showed them their purpose as to why they were in the forest of silence and then went back to get them unparalyzed.

I highly recommend to everyone to read this series. If not, then at least watch the show. It will get you motivated to start it. Very quick read. Also, yes, I'm gonna be biased towards these books, and what about it???😁😁😁

My friend brought home the first Deltora Dragons book, because of the dragon on the front.

I read that book and was curious how everything started. Rodda uses a great "then and now" device to show the reason for the quest the main characters are on, and why they are the ones to go.

This is a great entry to a fantasy-style series. Surely read the next one in the series.

به شخصه روون رو بیشتر از این سری می‌پسندم و حالا که بالاخره خوندمش ناراحت نیستم از این که تو راهنمایی تحریمش کردم.
متن و خط داستانی و شخصیت‌هاش خیلی خام‌تر و ساده‌تر از روون بودن. کاملا قابل حدس زدنه روندش. البته با خوندن اسپویلرها می‌دونم تو آینده یکی دو تا غافلگیری داره ولی خب از اول هم تعجب کرده بودم که چرا این احمق‌ها جاشون رو صرفا با هم عوض نکردن! که خب ظاهرا کردن. همین.
چند تا ایراد منطقی هم داره قصه که شاهکارن! مثلا باراد می‌گه چهار نفر رو دیده که از قصر در میومدن در حالی که آنا خونه بوده و این که باراد اصلا به روی خودش نمی‌یاره که مادر جاسمین رو می‌شناسه.
خلاصه شاید ادامه بدم خوندنش رو (اگر دوباره رفتم تبادل کتاب) ولی اگه نخوندم ناراحت نمی‌شم اصلا.
