Jade and Finn are idyllically happy in their little corner of rural Wiltshire. A rescue centre jampacked with animals keeps them super busy. With Finn’s art going from strength to strength, Jade can’t believe they’re living the dream until an arrogant property developer with questionable motives jeopardises their perfect lives and the future plans of the rescue centre.
Jade and Finn both have trust issues and they’ve promised there’ll be no more secrets. But keeping promises is harder than either of them imagined, especially where Finn’s past is concerned.
Living with Mr Spock the potty-mouthed parrot and Mickey the dog who barks at TV baddies there's never a dull moment at Duck Pond Rescue. But will the humans get their ‘happy-ever-after’ too?
Can they lay the ghosts of the past to rest and find a bright new future together?
Della Galton (aka Della Parker) writes novels set in Dorset, featuring quirky characters and very often a dog or two. She's had more than 2000 short stories published and she's run out of fingers to count her books on.
She is a popular speaker at writing conventions and the agony aunt for Writers' Forum Magazine.
When she is not writing she enjoys walking her dogs around the beautiful Dorset countryside and beaches.
I received a free copy of, Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage, by Della Galton, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book 2 of 2 in The Duck Pond Cottage Series. Jade an Finn are happily running their animal rescue, until an interloper wants to change everything, can they trust each other to get through this? This was an enjoyable read.
This story is about Jade and Finn. They’re both busy with the rescue and Finn’s art career. There’s a lot going on in this book. There’s some secrets and other side plots that threaten their happiness. It’s nice to revisit the Duck Pond and everyone there.
Family is central to this series, both biological family and the one you can choose for yourself. Jade and Finn are now engaged and settled in at Duck Pond Cottage. However, no matter how secure they feel in their relationship, both Jade and Finn have still demons from their pasts and issues towards their parents which they have to deal with. This volume centres around Finn's past largely, but there is a massive clue at the end of the story, that Jade will be revisiting her past in a future story.
The community which Jade has built up around her Rescue Shelter adds warmth and at times humour to the daily routine. You can absolutely imagine the different animals they all work so hard for. Jade is aware that a land problem nearby could have a huge effect on her animals but the situation gets more complicated as the story evolved. With likeable characters and a steady pace of story telling, this is an enjoyable read.
In short: family secrets and true romance Thanks to the publisher
Another sweet story in this series which I'm really enjoying. It was great to o back and read about all the characters and animals including the parrot which makes me laugh. I love reading about all the ups and downs of vetinary life and all the romance too. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Another lovely read, set in the Wiltshire countryside, where better?! (I am biased, I live there 😂) I think I actually preferred the storyline in this second book. I'm looking forward to reading the third one when it comes out in August.
This heartwarming story follows Finn and Jade, an engaged couple in the throes of wedding planning while also managing a busy animal sanctuary and their hectic daily lives. Finn is an aspiring artist who receives opportunity to finally make it big, and Jade is looking to acquire some land next door to expand her thriving animal sanctuary - Duck Pond Cottage. These endeavors don't come easier, however, as there are revelations and challenges both in their professional lives as well as in their personal lives that could change everything.
This was a very cute and quick read, and I could imagine this book would be great for a vacation or car ride. It was easy to follow and despite being pretty mundane in terms of content, was able to keep my interest the whole way through. There were just enough twists and turns to keep my wanting to read. I adored both Finn and Jade and their relationship with each other and the people around them. I enjoyed seeing how they handled challenges together and having a glimpse into their daily lives.
My only gripe was that the story was a bit too perfect for me. Yes, there was some drama but it was resolved quickly without much consequence and the challenges that were presented were easily overcome. I think the most interesting thing that happened that really kept me hooked was the whole Declan situation. I wish I could have seen Finn and Jade having to work through that issue a bit more at least to have some character growth and development, but that entire situation really didn't seem to effect their relationship at all. I like a mature, communicating couple but they seem to never get mad or get cranky with each other or even argue even about small things. I wish I could have seen them having to work on their relationship more. They are a great couple but unrealistic in my opinion. Even with the wedding planning, they were both just in agreement with everything even when another couple is involved. That took me out of the story a bit. Regardless, I still enjoyed reading.
This is a great book for those looking for a cozy quick and easy, uncomplicated read with some drama but without high tension. I recommend it for people that like reading about established, mature couples who are going through life together.
Can I please adopt Mr Spock? He is a hilarious parrot, he swears, she imitates various sounds, he can sing, and has fabulous comic timing. I need this parrot in my life, and he is easily one of my favourite animals in this book.
I am loving all the various animals at Duck Pond Rescue, and the way that Jade is determined to help any animal that is brought to her - including geese despite at that moment in time not having a pond - she enlists the help of the people wanting her to rehome the geese, and before long a pond has been dug! Just shows there are loads of animal mad people out there.
One of the biggest laughs in the book has to have been from Aiden's accident prone nature, he relates one tale to Jade and Finn and its brilliant, and I could imagine it so so clearly.
Finn especially has a lot of development during this book, as he discovers that he can see red, he digs into his past a bit more, and there is a big art show to look forward to too.
Meanwhile Jade would like to expand the rescue but a developer gazumps her gentleman's' agreement and starts her attempting to work out how she may be able to stop a housing development being built on the border of her land.
And of course we see lots of Sarah, Callum and Ben, in addition to Ray and Dorrie as well as other local characters that it's good to see more of.
And there are cameos from characters from both of Della Galton's previous series which will make her super fans really smile.
I am loving everything about this book, with the possible exception of the last couple of pages, as we have been left on my pet hate of a cliff-hanger - it's not the most epic of cliff-hangers but it will have me rather keen to read the next book as soon as possible, as it promises something potentially epic for one of our characters!
I've had a ball reading this, and can't wait for more.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Full of warmth, heart and plenty of humour, Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is the irresistible new novel from the fabulous Della Galton.
Not a day goes by when Jade and Finn do not count their blessings. Living in a beautiful rural corner of Wiltshire, Jade and Finn are kept busy by a rescue centre full of animals that constantly keep them on their toes. With Finn’s art going from strength to strength, everything seems to be going their way – until a ruthless property developer begins sniffing around putting their future, their homes and their dreams in serious jeopardy!
Having both had their hearts broken, Jade and Finn have serious trust issues. They promised to always be honest with each other and to never keep secrets from one another, but this promise is becoming harder and harder to keep. Will Jade and Finn manage to keep hold of the dream that means the world to them? Will there be a happy ending at the Duck Pond Rescue Centre for humans and animals alike? Or should they all resign themselves to a future far away from the place they’ve loved calling home?
Reading a Della Galton novel is always such a huge treat. Funny, feel-good and deliciously readable, her books never disappoint and Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is another gorgeous and uplifting romantic read that made me laugh and cry. With beautifully nuanced characters, assured storytelling and plenty of wit, charm and emotional drama to keep readers turning the pages, Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is the latest must-read from Della Galton!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The concept of this book is truly heartwarming: a rescue center filled with unique animals, challenges to protect the sanctuary, and a protagonist who tirelessly fights for every creature that comes her way. But the standout star of the story? The parrot, Mr. Spock. With his knack for mimicking sounds, singing, and hilarious antics, he completely stole the show and brought many smiles to my face.
As someone who absolutely loves animals and has two cats I adopted from an animal shelter, I felt a deep connection to the story. On top of that, one of my friends has two parrots, so reading about Mr. Spock brought back fond memories of their funny antics. This personal connection made me enjoy the book even more!
Jade, the main character, is likable and passionate, and Finn’s character arc added a lot of emotional depth to the story. His personal growth and the revelations about his past were some of the highlights for me.
However, I found the ending a bit disappointing. The cliffhanger left me feeling more frustrated than intrigued. It felt less like a satisfying conclusion to this book and more like a setup for the next installment, which dulled the impact of the story for me.
Overall, this was a sweet, solid read 3 ⭐ read, especially for animal lovers. The mix of humor, emotion, and lovable characters made it enjoyable—not extraordinary, but certainly entertaining.

My Opinion
It was lovely to be back at Duck Pond Cottage with Jade, Finn and all of their animals. Della Galton has once again written a delightful story. Whilst this would work as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading both books in the correct order. As the title suggests there are a lot of secrets within these pages. A heart-warming tale.

My comments:
Really loved the second book in this series, Phin and jade are both lovely characters and I hope there story will continue base on the end of this book I'm pretty sure it will. Only got into this author's writing when I read Puddleduck farm however i'm a huge fan now. Love that animals are so heavely featured in a lot of her books. Looking forward to future reads. Deserved the 5 star recommendation this has got.
In her latest new country romance novel at Duck Pond Rescue, readers follow Jade and Finn in their idyllic lives in rural Wiltshire at a rescue center full of animals needing help and a home. As Finn’s art career starts to take off, Jade thinks their life is too good to be true until an arrogant and morally questionable property developer threatens to ruin their happiness and the future of the rescue center. Both struggling with trust issues and secret-keeping, keeping their promises to each other is only becoming more difficult for Jade and Finn, who must discuss the past and let it rest for their future together. Emotional, well-written, and immersive, readers will love the continuation of Finn and Jade’s relationship in the latest Duck Pond Rescue novel, and the charming rural setting is absolutely perfect for their dynamic and growth. The characters -- and the animals -- are absolutely fantastic, while this new property developer antagonist offers the perfect challenge and rallying point for Jade and Finn. Whimsical, charming, and heartwarming, this novel is a fantastic continuation of this wonderful cozy romance series, and readers will love Della Galton’s new characters and challenges for Jade and Finn in this most recent instalment.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.
Simply fantastic. This is a series I try not to miss any of the stories in it and I've read quite a few by this author. I've read quite a few romance books and though this is one, I love that this series focuses on animal rescue as I am a big animal person. I really hope this series inspires others to help animals in some way even if by volunteering, donating goods, time or money, or even adoption or fostering animals. We have our lovely couple Jade and Finn living in rural Wiltshire. Each are settled in with their own things to keep them busy, he's an artistic painter, she runs the animal rescue with the help of some lovely volunteers and Finn as well. I do have to say I did find humor in Mr. Spock; the rescue center resident parrot who would say things at the most inconvenient times. Jade and Finn promised each other no more secrets but things have come up they've found hard to talk to each other about. As the book progresses, we are introduced to some quirky characters and a turn happened I just didn't see coming. Heartwarming and emotional I greatly look forward to reading more by the author.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This beautiful romance follows Jade and Finn as they are happily settling into life together at the Duck Pond Cottage and looking after the animals in the rescue centre. Including a very rude parrot.
They are looking to the future, and possibly even setting a date for their wedding thanks to a friend.
With secrets previously uncovered, they still struggle to trust each other and when Finn seems distant, she wonders what he may be hiding from her.
Is Finn hiding anything? Will they continue their happy lives together?
This romance is a beautiful read, there wasn’t a moment I wanted to stop reading I just wanted to keep finding more out about the characters’ lives.
There are many humorous moments, mostly with the animals involved, but it lightens the mood.
I have loved this series so far and look forward to reading more about the future of Jade and Finn.
Overall, a beautiful romance where Jade and Finn try to work through the trust issues they have in their relationship, whilst looking after many animals in the rescue centre.
Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is the sweet and heartwarming second book in the Duck Pond Cottage series. I have not read the first book but will be going back to do so.
I loved meeting Jade, Finn, and the animals in the rescue centre. As a huge supporter of local animal shelters in my area, I can appreciate the struggles these characters face. There are always challenges each organization faces including financial, space, volume of animals, unsupportive and almost combative public citizens, and lack of reliable volunteers. Not-for-profit animal shelters rely on volunteers to help bridge the gap because of the sheer volume of unwanted, stray, and/or reproducing animals. Add an unscrupulous develop to the mix and Jade and Finn see their perfect slice of animal heaven being heavily targeted.
The author did a great job creating this world, setting it up, and developing the characters. There are some sinister goings-on that pull both Jade and Finn in several directions. Plus, there are things in Finn's past that makes it hard for Jade and Finn to keep their promise of no secrets. I had fun reading about strong women, supportive but damaged partners, and silly animals.
Interesting to see the adventures of these characters. I did not like the cliffhanger at the end. Authors - if your book is good enough, then you don't need to have a cliffhanger at the end. It's insulting to us readers!

"Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage" by Della Galton is the second instalment in the Duck Pond Cottage series. Although I haven’t read the first book, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this one. The story revolves around Jade and Finn, an engaged couple running an animal rescue centre while planning their wedding. The plot is heartwarming and filled with the ups and downs of their daily lives at the centre. Despite the challenges they face, I loved how they tackled everything together without letting it affect their relationship. This book is a quick, easy read that warmed my heart. The witty banter between the characters and the humorous moments added so much charm to the story. The parrot, in particular, had me laughing out loud! I highly recommend this book to fans of cozy, small-town romances, animal lovers, and anyone looking for an uplifting and feel-good read. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Having met Jade and Finn in the first book, I was eager to see how their relationship had evolved and whether their pact not to keep secrets had coped with the stresses of the early days. Everything seemed to be perfect, and the harmony that they had discovered was definitely evident. It was lovely to catch up with some of the characters that book one introduced us to, along with some new ones who brought some serious twists to their idyllic lives. Neither Finn nor Jade intended to keep secrets, but they both failed to be wholly honest with each other. There’s nothing sinister about their lack of candour; it’s more an issue with timing. Both are desperate to discuss their experiences with the other, but pressures from their lives are a major contributing factor to their choices to remain quiet. Once again, there is entertainment in animal form, ranging from a foul-mouthed parrot named Mr Spock to a whole flock of geese. There’s even a litter of gorgeous puppies to find homes for. All in a day’s work for this delightful Wiltshire rescue centre. Once again, Della Galton has imagined and introduced a glorious selection of characters who add wonderful depth to this delightful story. Each one is perfectly developed, and their traits are becoming more recognisable with each story. I particularly enjoyed the connection between Finn and his newly discovered son. They are a delight to witness, and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. However, the main focus is on Jade and Finn, and I am thoroughly enjoying seeing their romance develop. Their relationship flourishes each visit, and I am very much looking forward to what is yet to come for the pair. As we are only on book two, there’s plenty of time to catch up and enjoy this lovely series.
This is one of those books that you should really read the first in the series before this latest one to fully appreciate it. Jade and Finn are happily settled at the Duck Pond Rescue Centre until the farm next door is put up for sale and Finn starts looking for his long absent mother. I enjoyed the first book in this series, A New Arrival at Duck Pond Cottage, and this one has added to it. A book set around an animal rescue centre will always pull at the heart strings. The "evil" developer of the farm next door might be a touch cartoonish, but the search for Finn's mother feels very real. There is the thread that family isn't just blood, but friendship that also rings true. Overall a warm, cozy story of the type that I enjoy and I was pleased to see that the stage has been set for the next book in the series and I'm looking forward to reading that. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
It was great to be back at Duck Pond Cottage with Finn and Jade and all the animals. I love when you get to see characters grow and develop over multiple books.
Finn deciding to search for his mum and learning about her history and finding his new family was really nice and I liked that there was an air of caution and a protectiveness toward his dad and Ben’s feelings. Plus along side all that Finn gets his first art exhibition and even sells a few painting, his dream come true.
I enjoyed the family scene of Christmas Day with everyone gathered at the rescue centre, family brought together linked by love and friendship.
I can’t wait to see what happens next with Jades dad and the double wedding. I hope Mr Spock gets to play a role in the wedding, he’s a real crowd pleaser.
Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage follows Jade and Finn as they continue to navigate their happy ever after but with family dramas and property developers sniffing around it isn't a easy ride. I enjoyed everything about this book especially the naughty but cute animals. Mr Spock is a stand out with his cussing language he had me in fits of laughter and I need Mr Spock in my life. Jade and Ben remind me a lot of myself as I would rescue and go beyond for animals too. The family drama plotted had a few surprises that I wasn't expecting at all. I enjoyed the brief appearance of Phoebe from a previous series and I love how the rescues work together. It's a heartwarming story filled with my favourite thing in the world ANIMALS!
A rescue centre, jam-packed with animals - what's not to love?!
Mr Spock the parrot is back! I first remember him from one of Della's previous books, and he's still as naughty and hilarious as he was then, but now he's moved into the rescue centre and there are lots of people available to teach him new words!
Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is the second in the series about Jade's rescue centre and all the animals that she loves, cares for and rehomes. It's full of cuteness, with puppies, foxes, wedding plans and kids and easily a book that you could devour on a rainy afternoon while you're waiting for the sun to make an appearance (I'm still waiting)!
This can be easily read as a standalone book, but I'd recommend reading the first in the series to begin with, just because it's another great read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for the opportunity to read and review Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage.
Della Galton’s Summer Secrets at Duck Pond Cottage is a heartwarming return to the beloved Duck Pond Cottage series, offering readers a delightful blend of family, friendship, and rural charm. The story centers on Jade and Finn, whose idyllic life in Wiltshire is tested by secrets and challenges, yet their journey highlights the enduring importance of community and support. Galton’s cast of well-drawn characters—including a particularly amusing parrot—brings warmth and humor to the narrative, making the cottage and its residents feel wonderfully real. Fans of cozy, uplifting fiction will find this installment both comforting and engaging, and it’s sure to leave readers eager for more adventures at Duck Pond Cottage
This is the second in the series about Duck Pond Cottage. I have not read the first, and felt this worked as a standalone, I could follow the character references. I will go back and read the first however, as I enjoyed this one.
The theme of family runs throughout this story - whether biological, or the family you make via friendship. Jade and Finn are happily running Duck Pond rescue centre, surrounded by wonderful volunteers and amazing animals. I loved Mr Spock the parrot, and Mickey and Diesel were fabulous!
I'm looking forward to book three, this was left perfectly poised for another touching story.
Jade and Finn enjoy their time together, although life is busy with the animal rescue centre and family. As they settle into life as a couple, new challenges and secrets rock their romantic idyll. Jade and Finn experience an emotional journey with career successes and family secrets. It's an immersive story, a mix of poignancy and uplifting moments with characters that you invest in. I like the contemporary relevance, the family drama, friendships and romance and, of course, the delightful animal characters, especially the cat and the parrot. If you follow this author, you will recognise some of the old friends. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This book has down-to-earth characters that are always battling the ups and downs of life. Finn searches for his mom to learn why she left him while Jade deals with developers to fight for more land for her animal rescue. Finn and Jade often don’t share their plans with each other and it blows up in their faces. Will they ever learn to communicate feelings/secrets with each other? This was the most aggravating part of the story. I did like the fun idea of having a double wedding with her best friend. The book ended rather abruptly, but sets up the next book of the series nicely.
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Summer Secrets At Duck Pond Cottage by Della Galton follows on in the life of Jade and Finn and their animal rescue farm. Their romance flourishes, the animals become larger in number, and there is an exceptional new addition who adds a lot of humour in certain situations!! It isn’t all fun and frolics though. There’s a negative situation Jade has to deal with and Finn has situations of his own…. There is a return of previous characters plus some new ones. A great story that I enjoyed just as much as the last one!!! Many thanks to Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this arc copy via Netgalley.. My opinion is my own. #Netgalley, #The oldBookClub, #DellaGalton
This is the second book in this delightful series but could be read as a standalone. Perfect for fans of this authors puddle-duck farm series as this story incorporates some of the characters from there.
This instalment shines a light on the relationship between jade and Finn and compromises of their story.
A heartwarming and uplifting quick read which was perfect escapism and covered a lot of family issues along with .some funny animal antidotes.
Looking forward to seeing where this series takes the reader next
Jade is the owner at Duck Pond Sanctuary, a place where animals are hosted to be rehomed. At the beginning I thought this book was not my cup of tea, but then I've changed my mind! The topics of friendship and what family really means, together with all the animals and beautiful paradise of the sanctuary concur to build a very nice and ease book to read if you feel you just need to relax and receive good vibes. I would say the target is young adult, mid-school, as descriptions are quite childish, but anyway, I've spent nice and sweet hours in company of the characters at Duck Pond.
The story follows Jade and Finn, who run an animal rescue centre in the English countryside.
Their neighbour decides to retire and sell of his land. Jade wants to buy some of the land to extend the rescue centre.
There are extended family issues, some fun animal happenings, like ducks who make an impact on Finn’s interview with an agent, an injured fox, a parrot with a naughty word problem.
Oh and the accident prone friend’s story about proposing to his girlfriend was hilarious.
Really enjoyed this story, can’t wait for the next book.
