Hits home for me

Very interesting, I realized that by not sharing my thoughts at meetings, it was really a disservice to my co-workers. This is an empowering and easy read worth sharing!

When judges have to ask women lawyers not to wear flip-flops and tank tops to court, we've got a long way to go, baby.

I LOVED this book and I wish every young woman would read it. Sadly, women come out of business, law, and medical schools with little or no knowledge of how to survive and thrive in the professional world. Each one has to learn from trial-and-costly-error.

Men and women are different. Whether that difference is in our DNA or springs from being told to "act like a little lady" or being praised for being "sweet as sugar" doesn't really matter. We must accept that some personality traits that our society values in females are not those that promote a successful professional career.

This is a dense book with a lot of information, but it boils down to two things: confidence and professionalism. As the author points out, men's strident confidence is a survival strategy that dates from the days when the toughest-acting caveman got the food and the females and the weaker-seeming ones starved and fathered no children.

Confidence may not come naturally for women, but it's a skill and all skills can be learned. A confident woman will stand, walk, and talk in a manner that gets respect from others. She won't feel the need to talk too much or apologize unnecessarily or denigrate herself or others. She won't find herself being passed over for a promotion because she'll insist on being valued for her excellent work. She won't be paid less than a man in the same job because she'll research salaries and hold out for appropriate pay.

Professionalism is vital to women. It encompasses how a woman dresses, speaks, and acts. Restraint in navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of the workplace pays off. Dress conservatively. Don't share personal information. Don't get involved in the personal lives of colleagues. And don't ever forget that they're co-workers, not friends.

If you're a student or just starting your career, studying this little book could save you a lot of grief and money. If you're older, it's never too late to learn. If you're determined to "be yourself" fine, but realize that it could be holding you back in your career. It's your life and your choice.
