He knew she was trouble from the moment they met.

Esme Laurent is a con artist. An accomplished liar. A world-class thief. And probably the most beautiful and intriguing woman that Tyler Barrett has ever met. Sure, he has to arrest her at their first meeting, and she absolutely hates him, but…well, he has a job to do. And Tyler always gets the job done.

Turns out, she is the new job.

The people in charge want to use Esme to bring down a very dangerous criminal operation. And in order to do that, Esme has to stay in the land of the living. She needs protection, she needs a new identity, and she needs to disappear, immediately. Because Esme has more than a bit of power, she makes her own deal…her protection needs to come in the ever-so-gorgeous, ever-so-dangerous, and ever-so-law-abiding form of U.S. Marshal Tyler Barrett.

They’ll disappear into Small Town, USA. And they’ll pretend to be newlyweds who just can’t keep their hands off each other.

No, absolutely, this cannot be happening. But no matter how much Tyler protests, the new job is, in fact, happening. He’s being sent to Asylum, Alabama, with the delectable Esme. He’s supposed to be her husband—a role that will give him twenty-four, seven access in order to protect her. He needs that access in order to make sure that Esme doesn’t run from the authorities and that she stays alive. But what Tyler doesn’t count on is the consuming desire he feels for a woman who should be off-limits.

She’ll test every limit that he has…

Esme doesn’t expect her attraction to the rule-following Tyler. He’s big, he’s buttoned-down, and he’s absolutely…delicious. She also suspects that he may be carefully controlling a wild side—one that she would love to see erupt. Oh, if only.

When danger comes calling, Tyler is more than ready to handle any threat. Who knew that falling for the good guy could be so tempting? And so very…heart-breaking. Because there was no way a guy like Tyler would want to stay around once they stop pretending. Everyone knows the bad girl never gets to keep the good guy, especially when she’s still working a very long con.

Author’s Note: Are you in the mood for a strong hero who makes “protecting and defending” his life code? Tyler is big, fierce, and more than ready to step into the line of fire in order to protect his charge. He’s also falling fast under the spell of a woman he should not trust. Everything with Esme is just pretend…everything, except the desire they feel for each other. And the very, very real danger that stalks her. A danger that may wind up costing Tyler more than he ever expected. WHEN HE PROTECTS, Tyler gives his all, and when he loves…he will fight like hell for the woman who stole his heart.

4.75⭐️!

From the beginning to the second half, I couldn’t figure out Esme at all. I was wary of her motives and actions. She was kinda morally grey but with loyal heart. It was so much fun.

Tyler was fiercely protective and as straight forward as they come to Esme’s wickedness. It was entertaining to watch their collision. I loved their past connection and how smitten Esme was before Tyler even knew her.

As usual there was so many unexpected twists and when all were revealed I needed a minute to think and figure it out.
Loved Kane and Tyler’s bond.

-Good boy x bad girl.
-Bodyguard romance.
-Obsessed hero.
-She falls first but he falls harder.
-Recommended, Safe.

I'm not sure what went wrong here, but how did a badass thief become a damsel in distress for the whole book? I had high hopes for her, but instead she becomes a character who relies solely on the MMC for survival. Ugh, why?

This also features a pining FMC, which I do not particularly enjoy. It turns out, Tyler (30s?) rescued Esme (27) from the debris of a bomb explosion that occurred a few years prior. Since then, he has become her perfect hero, and she has followed his exploits from a distance for years. As for him, he had no idea about her, not even her face because it was damaged when he got her out. And he was told later that the girl he saved had died.

Anyway, present time, she orchestrated their second meetup. She knew she would be in danger, and she needed someone who would protect her. Tyler didn't know about Esme's scheming to make their arrangement happen. But the moment he saw her, instant attraction turned into lust for him. So, he became her bodyguard, and I guess readers know how this will go down.

Overall, it was okay. I enjoyed the twists and revelations, and the suspense kept me turning the pages. I think it was the only reason I kept going if I'm being honest. 🤷‍♀️

In terms of romance, it took me a while to become invested. As I said before, I dislike a pining FMC, and this definitely fits the "she falls fast AND she falls harder" trope. I want the yearning to come from the MMC, not the other way around. Sure, he got on the same page after some time, but still.

This would also be a lot better if Esme's strength was shown in this book, rather than being reduced to a woman who can't do anything to save her life.

Book info:
- Pining FMC
- Age gap (??)
- Second chance-ish (for her)
- Bodyguard romance
- Romantic suspense
- Bad girl (thief) x Good boy (marshal)
- No cheating, OM/OW, separation
- Attempted murder
- Bombing
- No V (last: h - 2 yrs, H - 6 mos) 🙄
- HEA (weeks later, married)

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: The premise and the characters.

The Not-So-Good: The suspense wasn't all that engaging for me.

The Bad: The ending.

Overall: This was enjoyable. I like the romantic suspense subgenre every once in a while and I have had mixed success with Cynthia Eden. I'm glad I gave it a shot and it was only $0.99! I liked the characters (main and side) and I liked the premise. I just wish the suspense was a little more suspenseful/mysterious and the ending was lacking. Overall, I liked this a little more than "just okay" 3 stars.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Esme and Tyler's story. Esme is an internationally known thief that US Marshal, Tyler doesn't expect. Especially when he is assigned to protect her after a hit has been put on her and she is trading secrets in exchange for his protection. They become fake newlyweds and lines get crossed, there's some suspenseful and sexy scenes, and some big secrets revealed...and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Esme and Tyler's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and thought it flowed well.

Instalove: Kind of. They develop strong feelings without much buildup.

H (Hero) rating: 4 stars. Tyler. I liked him and how he cared for the h.

h (heroine) rating: 4 stars. Esme. I liked her. I liked her strength and smarts.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends in an alright place and with enough that I would call this a HEA , but I still wanted so much more. I could've signed up for the author's newsletter to get more, but I never do that just because it's my pet peeve (petty, I know)

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

Oh my heart, it has been completely consumed by Esme and Tyler! Give me two characters that are both so delightfully developed into their own unique personalities, and those personalities clash and yet attract at the same time, and I’m all in!

May be an image of 1 person

While I’m usually all about the hero, this time the heroine, Esme, stole not only the story, but my heart. She was fun and feisty, had a sharp wit about her and an edge of sarcasm that had me laughing out loud. Of course none of that would have affected me had Tyler’s dry personality, his lack of humor and his driving need to protect her at all cost not been the backdrop to her actions.

This was such a fun story. I found myself thinking about Esme and Tyler when I was not reading and hating to see the end of the book approaching with each turn of the page. As lighthearted as much of their story was, it was also layered with danger and drama from outside forces. This author absolutely laid it down when marrying the two elements together.

I am already a massive pushover for a true bodyguard romance.

And this one? This one was perfection. I loved watching Tyler fall for Esme. He was so convinced she was lying, tricking, pretending, that watching him realize she wasn’t? Perfect.

Esme was also all sorts of perfect. She was smart and capable and full of surprises, but also knew when she had gotten in over her head and needed help. She was caring and loving but often was scared to do so.

And the banter between these two was great. I often found myself chuckling. Throw in Kane, who has zero issues telling Tyler what he thinks, and they were the perfect storm of verbal sparring.

Also, can I just say, that I am so incredibly excited to get more Kane? I can’t WAIT for his book.

I’ve always enjoyed Cynthia Eden’s books, but this is probably in my top five favorites of hers.

Little Miss Sticky Fingers

Esme Laurent, is way more than she seems. There are many layers to her and Tyler wants to peal every one of them back to find the real woman.

“You’re bulletproof to me,” she added. “My superman.”

Tyler is a US Marshal assigned to protect her. He agrees reluctantly. Right off the bat the danger and intrigue start and just when you think you know what’s going on. WRONG!!

Outstanding suspense with characters that are lovable and hilarious. Always a pleasure to read this author.

Cynthia Eden does one thing really good. Okay, she does more than one. She writes wonderful stories that you'll crave to read. But for me what she does is make the best alpha heroes. Now you hear alpha heroes, and you think of someone who takes over and tells you want to do. Yes, they do but not in the way you might think. They protect and love hard. They also let you be your own person. My heart is sighing just thinking about it.

I love when she starts new series and that's what she's done with When He Protects. This one has so much gone on and I would admit I wasn't sure if I liked Esme at all. Every time I started to, she did or said something that made me wonder why I liked her in the first place.

As the story moves you start to understand why. She's so much more than I thought she was, and it seems that only Tyler knew it. He stands for her when everyone else thinks she's a bad person. You love that about him. He really does forgive her so much.

As the story unfolds you start to wonder just who's good and who to trust. I worried about Esme and Tyler and what they were getting themselves into. This is a very fast paced story that happens in a very short time. So much happens that I'd love to share but I want you to experience it for yourself. It makes the story work so well, so I'd ruin it for you.

I will say that it's well worth the read and that if you are bugged but any of the main characters not to worry so much comes out that changes your feels. I really can't wait for the next story, and I wonder who it's going to be about. We have a few new men characters that would make great alpha heroes. Until then we have a new Christmas story coming up to read which we all know I love a good holiday story.

WHEN HE PROTECTS is the first instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary adult PROTECTOR AND DEFENDER erotic, romantic suspense series. This is former Marine turned US Marshall Tyler Barrett, and twenty-seven year old, professional thief Esme Laurent’s story line.

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Esme and Tyler WHEN HE PROTECTS follows the building relationship between our story line couple. Tyler Barrett was working undercover at a high end party, a party where a suspected thief may have been targeting but Tyler will come face to face with an unlikely mark, a beautiful woman whose secrets run deadly and deep. Enter Esme Laurent. Esme is a professional thief but all is not as it appears to be. Esme has secrets that may be heart breaking for Tyler, secrets she does not necessarily want to reveal. A bounty on her head, Esme and Tyler embark on a fake marriage, going into hiding but Esme is willing to run to protect the man with whom she is falling in love.

The world building follows the building romance and relationship between our story line couple. In hiding, our couple find themselves the target of a powerful man but betrayal comes from within, from many sides, and from where they least expect it. No longer able to trust the people in charge, Esme and Tyler must try to make it on their own.

The relationship between Esme and Tyler begins as an assignment when Tyler is tasked to arresting our story line heroine but when Esme becomes the target, Tyler finds himself guardian and protector on orders from the top. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to several members of local and federal law enforcement and government agencies including Esme’s father Etienne Laurent; Sheriff Clay Banks; FBI Agent Grayson Stone; former Marine Kane Harte, and Agent Thaddeus Caldwell. The requisite evil has many faces.

WHEN HE PROTECTS is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, family and relationships, forgiveness and love. The character driven, fasts paced premise is intriguing and captivating but the guilty party(s) was easily to deduce. The characters are charismatic and cheeky; the romance is seductive and fated.

*Cette chronique est basée sur un NetGalley ARC en échange d'un avis neutre et honnête*

Genre & Tropes : romance contempo x cop / thief romance x suspense plot x protective alpha hero x spicy scenes

PS2 : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D

The first book of a series that delighted me and one of my favorite books by this author

When I saw that Cynthia Eden was going to release a new suspense romance series, I was absolutely DELIGHTED and after reading this first book, I can't wait to discover this whole new series !

I loved Tyler as a sexy and grumpy but also very protective US Marshall and Esme, the French thief (I love the "French touch" <3) with a complicated past !

The plot was twisted with a lot of corruption and betrayal (some of which were quite unexpected) and the romance was sexy but with angst and cute sides too !

In short, a sexy and high-tension suspense romance that I devoured !

PS : I want books with all of Tyler's friends !!

PS2: to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D

This book was a complete surprise for me! I expected action and maybe a little steam… but I wasn’t prepared to love it as much as I did!

Esme is a brilliant thief with a wicked sense of humor, a love for shiny things, and zero interest in playing by the rules.
Tyler is a rule-following federal agent who thought he had everything under control until he crosses paths with Esme during a high-society party slash heist gone sideways. Sparks fly, handcuffs get involved (not the fun kind… at first 😈🤭), and suddenly these two wake up hitched. I mean… WHAT?! 👀

From the very beginning, Esme says she’s trouble—and Tyler should’ve listened. Honestly, I should’ve listened too 😂😂 But did that stop me from falling head over heels? Absolutely not!

This book is the perfect cocktail of sizzling chemistry, witty banter, sharp twists, and nonstop action! Every scene between Esme and Tyler crackles with energy whether they’re fighting, flirting, or figuring out how to be accidentally married without killing each other 🤣😎

And can we talk about the banter? 👩🏻‍🍳😘 Sharp, sexy, and addictive. I couldn’t get enough!!

If you love a badass heroine who knows exactly what she wants (and how to steal it 🤫🤫), a hero who slowly unravels in the best possible way, and a romance that hits hard while dodging bullets this one’s for you!! Trust me!!

Esme Laurent is playing a dangerous game, and she’s counting on Tyler Barrett, former Marine and current US Marshal, for her plan to succeed. Tyler was working protection at an event and as soon as their eyes met, he knew she would be trouble. When the event is threatened by armed gun men, he locks her in a room, while he ends the threat. As the police arrive, he soon realizes that although “locked” in the room, she has managed to get into further trouble. She has been accused of being the “Fox”, a criminal known for stealing jewels and secrets and the ability to get into any place and escape. Learning that she may have high-level intel that the government needs, that there is a bounty on her, they are on the run posing as a married couple. The use of his friend’s cabin, while they decide what their next step will be and try to stay alive. There is a bounty on her life, but he has not given up that she will confide in him as he is falling in love with her. When her past secrets are revealed, will there ever be a chance at a safe future for them? A rush from beginning to the thrilling end…and as always, the use of humorous dialog, among the characters, adds such a fun touch to the danger. Loved it!! Ended the year with a BANG! this was one of the best books ive read in 2024, and i havent read a lot of good ones!

i was captivated the second i read the first sentence! i knew i was gonna love Esme - not to mention I LOVEEEE HER NAME!! love how original it is- but i truly really loved her! she was the definition of fierce and badass i love to see in books, witty with her comebacks and oh so profound.

Tyler! 🥵
He was everything too! Alpha and so hot! He was just as captivated by Esme as I was. truly impressed! He loved her and did everything to stand by her and he did! anyways i loveddd him too!

Together, these two were fireworks!
idk if i would classify this book as mafia because it wasnt but it was everything and more! Happy to be ending the new year with such an amazing book! will definitely re read!
Ngl, i was scared the book would end in a happy note as i approached the end bc how good it was there was no way it would end that way! but it did and it was amazing! I wish they had a part 2/3/4 and more to their story!!

WHEN HE PROTECTS (Protector and Defender Series – Book 1)

I’m addicted to Cynthia Eden’s books (her romantic-suspense especially)! She has become one of my favorite "go-to" authors. And her book covers are some of the best -- none of those ugly comic book covers that drive me crazy.

When He Protects was a direct hit to my heart and had me frantically flipping pages trying to keep up with the wild ride. I was simply awed and delighted with both main characters. Esme Laurent is a con artist, and she's caught during one of her schemes. She has valuable information about an ongoing crime spree. She needs protection because there’s a huge bounty hanging over her head. Tyler Barrett, a U.S. Marshal is assigned as her bodyguard. Esme may not be exactly what people think she is. She’s holding onto a lot of secrets. There’s a wonderful romance, along with suspenseful twists in this story that bring plenty of action and surprises.

I must admit that the heroine steals the show. And I hated to see it end. Luckily, Cynthia Eden provides some additional bonus scenes that wraps this one up in a tidy bow -- and readers won’t want to miss!

Fun-to-read, fast-paced and sexy. A great cast of characters in a complex “who-can-you-trust” plot with plenty of dark secrets that need to be exposed.

Excitedly looking forward to the next book in this new series, and I’m hoping that Tyler’s friend, Kane will be the hero.

This is one of my favorites.

We begin with US Marshall, Tyler Barrett, undercover at a big upscale party to capture a world class thief known as "the Fox." Esme Laurent approaches him at the party and flirts until a gang of robbers enter the picture. Tyler and Esme get locked up in a study. She talks him into going and saving the day. All the while she's scaling an outside wall to get something in the hosts, Jorlan, bedroom.

Tyler does save the day and he find Esme right where he left her only she now has a bag of Jorlan's diamonds.

Word is spread to the outside world the Esme is "the Fox" and the FBI needs to put her in protective custody because a 7M bounty has been put on her head and they want information she has.

She will only do what they ask if Tyler is her body guard. So the two of them go into a fake marriage and hide out in Asylum, AL. The hiding doesn't go so well when Esme saves a little girls life. There are also two of Tyler's friends there to "help" them.

There are so many little twists and turns. It really makes this a great read. And Esme is just the best.

Enjoy!

note - I've had family issues and that is why it took me a month to read a book. The book is very fast paced.

U.S. Marshall Tyler Barrett can’t believe the fiasco that just went down while he was on an undercover assignment. But at least he caught the thief red-handed. He just didn’t expect to suddenly find himself in a fake marriage with her.

Esme Laurent is believed to be a world-class thief and con-artist known as The Fox. Arresting her would be a great coup for any agent. But when U.S. Marshall Tyler Barrett does just that he suddenly finds himself in an extremely unexpected predicament. And he isn’t at all happy about it.

Esme and Tyler will find themselves on the run and unsure who they can trust. As Tyler learns the idiosyncrasies of Esme’s creative story telling, he sees the person she works so hard to hide from everyone else, and he’s beginning to fall for her. As secrets are exposed the trust that is finally developing will become key to their survival.

I received an ARC and freely offer this review.

A new book by Cynthia Eden and of course I wanted to get my grabbing hands on it ! Hey I'm used to her uber strong, alpha heroes but was totally surprised by the heroine here as from the first page Esme is absolutely a complete conundrum just waiting to be solved. Tyler certainly had to concentrate because Esme is very used to being underestimated and just generally running rings around everyone. Is she had, is she good or just misunderstood ?
Hehe this was quite simply fun escapism with two intelligent people trying to one up each other and well frankly they both wanted to come out on top ! Tyler was such a grumpy guy at times and yes I know that's fairly typical in romance books but pitting him against Esme who is unafraid to use all her womanly wiles just made me smile. Fun and quite simply pure escapism.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

"Are you hurt at all?" he asked Esme.
"I broke a nail."

What a great start to this new series!

It's been a minute since I've loved a FMC this much! If you're a Doctor Who fan - Esme gave me River Song vibes and I was cackling when she actually even said "spoiler!" at one point lmao

It's a classic Cynthia Eden story, what's not to love? Badass, obsessed hero. Great heroine (this one had a touch of villainry I adored). The suspense and turns kept me on my toes as well. Would have finished it in one sitting if I hadn't started it so late at night.

Safety:

When He Protects is the first book in Ms. Eden's newest series entitled the Protector and Defender Series and I have a feeling this is going to be a great series based on this first installment. This is classic Cynthia Eden - tons of action, drama, suspense, unexpected twists and turns and an undeniable attraction between the characters, Tyler and Esme. I really liked Esme-she drew me in immediately. I had a feeling there was more to her than meets the eye and there certainly is. She brought out all kinds of emotions in me - she had me laughing and crying in equal measure. You can never go wrong with a Cynthia Eden read if you're looking for romantic suspense - she nails it every single time. I'm grateful to have been given an opportunity to read an advance copy of this book through NetGalley.

When he protects is the start of the new Protector and Defender Romance series by Cynthia Eden. And wow what a great start! I loved it!
US Marshal Tyler is working undercover at a party where he meets beautiful Esme.
He immediately senses something isn’t right but doesn’t know what he is in for yet
Esme is a wonderful character! She’s smart, funny and strong and kind of a bad girl, or is she?
Tyler is protective, a bit grumpy and very hot!!
I don’t want to give away spoilers but this story had me on the edge of my seat right from the first page.
Suspenseful, great dialogue and hot romance!
I’m looking forward to read the next book in the series!
I received this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion

"Sometimes, you meet someone,” Tyler told her, voice gruff and shredding at the edges, “and you know right away that the person is trouble. His hold tightened around her. “The kind of trouble that you have been looking for your whole life.”

This was a fast and entertaining read. Yes, there was too much going on a sometimes, and in some parts the book felt dragged but the constant new revelations kept me going. Esme & Tyler had good chemistry but I wanted to see more romantic development between them. Apart from their past connection, it felt like they did not get enough time together to be a couple due to the constant action and hiding away. Still, I enjoyed reading this book. So I'll give it 3.25 stars ⭐

I volunteered to read and review a readers copy of When He Protects through Net Galley . I really enjoyed reading this spectacular suspense romance . U. S . Marshal Tyler Barrett never dreamed while working undercover he would meet and have to arrest Esme Laurent a con artist and world class thief . Now she hates him . Unfortunately the higher ups want Esme to help stop a dangerous criminal operation along with that comes her sexy body guard Marshall Tyler Barrett . Tyler tries to fight the attraction and Esme pushes all the buttons on his patience . Feelings get involved and throw in a lot of twists and turns you get an outstanding suspense romance . I highly recommend taking the time to read .

While I do enjoy this book very much so actually, it was mostly because I feel like this read like a movie. I mean technically, it all happened in a matter of few days.

But the writing feels a little off for me, especially the fact that it's on 3rd person POV. It needs some getting used to. But the story wasn't bad at all. I LOVE the chemistry between Tyler and Esme and the push and pull wasn't annoying considering their situation.

I also LOVE how determined they both are in making sure the other are safe. How it turned out she had been doing all this to have him and ughh their story was just so good.

But the whole explanation thing abt the criminal; Thaddeus, Louis, Jarlon etc gets a little confusing bcs there's a lot of telling instead of showing, so yeah...

When He Protects by Cynthia Eden is the first book in a brand-new series, Protector And Defender. Not a bad boy in this story but one very bad girl. I had a feeling about Esme from the beginning and it held true. U.S. Marshal Tyler Barrett is a treat that Esme is determined to have and she does seem to made her own rules.

An instant attraction but will ignore it at least on Tyler’s part kind of story. Esme is not the villain but they are after Esme, Tyler is going to protect her with his life and law enforcement plan to use her to catch those criminals. Action-packed from the beginning with heated scenes. This is the kind of story Cynthia Eden does best.

She's a bad, bad girl, and he's a very good boy....

Tyler Barrett is a law-abiding US Marshall, He's the grown up boy scout with a wild side he's got locked down. Hint, on where it comes out?
Esme is a very bad girl. She's a con artist working the long con. She enjoys being bad, but now she needs protection. Tyler's in particular. She would like nothing better than to see this good boy break and be on the receiving end of his wild side.
This book was so much fun as they are hiding out in Asylum as a married couple. All that forced proximity leads to steamy times and plenty of action (with a side of danger).
Tyler is worth the read.
Recommend.

When He Protects is a fantastic start to the new Protector and Denfender series. Along with a good dose of mystery and suspense, we get humour, bickering, delicious chemistry and lots of emotions between Esme and Tyler. They're wonderful characters with painful secrets which are revealed over time and proof to be perfect for each other in the end. A great HEA for the couple and an intriguing introduction to side characters just begging for their own stories!
I was fortunate to have received an advanced copy from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.

I loved this book and couldn’t stop reading. Loved how hard Tyler fought his attraction to Esme. He’s there to protect her but once he quit fighting his feelings, it’s so hot. He’s so protective and very possessive of her. I even cried at one point. She’s just as protective of him too. I really loved them together. Loved staying on edge, just who could they trust? Thankfully they do get a very happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed the book as I have with all of Cynthia Eden's other books. However, as with all of the other books I did not like the profanity. It seems her favorite word or variation is f**k. According to my Kindle there were 142 occurrences. That word is not necessary.

I enjoyed the book, but I still had problems with Esme. She was just too manipulative for me. Was she truly a thief or not? At the end, it was stated that all of her references to the Fox were wiped. I did not think everything could be wiped from the Internet. But, of course this is fiction.

All in all a good read.
