The third installation of Stacy Kristen’s St. James Security series is a nail biter like its predecessors, but it is definitely more intense and takes a darker turn. Readers are well advised to heed the author’s trigger warning.
Bethany, the office assistant at SJS, is kidnapped by a group known as the Irish Mafia. The situation is scary and raw, and the tension kept me on edge, but I found myself wishing Bethany’s emotions were explored in greater depth as the ordeal unfolded. Also (SPOILER ALERT!), while her feelings toward her captor were justifiably complex, Aiden protected her life with his own and they were both forced into unwanted but nonetheless intimate situations (simulated, both consensual and non-consensual). I expected after all the trauma, she would’ve experienced Stockholm syndrome at the very least, or developed genuine feelings for him at the most, creating direct conflict with her relationship with bf Luke (I’m Team Aiden btw).
Overall, I enjoyed this page-turner. If you’re looking for an adult summer steamer that pushes both buttons and boundaries while ultimately delivering an HEA, the latest in the St. James Security series is a worthy addition to your book tote.
