Albert Heijn Not To Go
A short story about supermarkets and why they are evil.
The book starts from the retelling of a story that actually happened (a person being taken by police under the accusation of not paying for a 1.80 euros kaasbroodje at an Albert Heijn To Go in Amsterdam Centraal) to further delve into various thematics that extrapolate the dynamics behind the production and selling of a product like the kaasbroodje in an Albert Heijn. Next to the chapters in which the story is told, there are thus chapters in which various topics are analysed: from the automation in supermarkets, to the cheese industry, from the bread industry to the justice system.

July 4, 2026habe das Buch in einer lieben Buchhandlung in Amsterdam gekauft:-)
Eine kleine Lektüre mit anitkapitalistischer Kritik. Wenn man sich schon mal mit dem Thema beschäftigt hat steht jetzt nicht so viel Neues drinnen und geht auch nicht so in die Tiefe.
Ausgangspunkt ist eine Person, die wegen dem Vorwurf ein Käsebrot bei der SB-Kasse nicht bezahlt zu haben von einem Security aufgehalten und schließlich von der Polizei abgeführt wird. Die Schilderung von dem Vorfall wechselt sich pro Kapitel mit dem Fokus auf ein Thema (Nahrungsmittelindustrie, Automatisierung, Rechtssystem) ab.
Ich fand die Details im anfänglichen Amsterdam-Bezug (hostile architecture am Bahnhof etc.) spannend. Später wurde es dann etwas allgemeiner und verliert sich am Ende bissi.
Spoiler: es endet mit einer Traumsequenz??

This was a genuinely good read. It has put into words a lot of feelings I had about the Netherlands and its highly consumeristic culture.
The book’s approach to convey a message is by listing every ingredient in a Kaasjebrodje, and then going over how the industry goes about obtaining it, giving a deep-cut perspective into the unsustainability of industrial agriculture, automation and law-enforcement. I think the book however has a tendency to double down on itself, especially with the ending.
This is a very obscure read, that is very hard to get your hands on outside of the Netherlands. When looking the title up, a query returns only a single book store that stocks it.
