This was a book that I had received from the author (Robert Thornton), his publisher, and the fine folks at Booksirens.com in return for an honest review.

This book thrusts the protagonist, Dr. Hope Allerd, an infectious disease specialist. Into a chaotic political landscape after an ultra-conservative faction, led by General B. Armstrong, seeks to dismantle the U.S. government. As tensions rise, Allerd finds herself entangled in a conspiracy where the fate of democracy rests on her ability to expose Armstrong's plot before he declares himself a sempiternus (Latin for “ruler for life) ruler. The narrative, echoing present-day anxieties, blends political turmoil with individual ethics in a race against time.

The premise of this book feels like it’s been plucked straight from modern-day headlines, blending political intrigue, military maneuvering, and the ever-present threat of a dictatorship.

The primary plot line in “Lethal Hope” draws upon the current political climate in the United States to make its criminal conspiracy seem plausible. The action moves along at an enjoyable pace, and there are enough twists to keep a reader interested in finding out what happens next.

What sets this thriller apart is its relevance in today's politically charged climate. The themes of authoritarianism, power grabs, and the fragility of democratic institutions resonate strongly, making the stakes feel very real. The author’s choice to center the plot around an ultra-conservative group seeking to dismantle the rule of law brings a contemporary edge to the narrative.

With a well-detailed cast of characters - computer genius-and-hacker brother Jack, fiancé-and-investigative reporter Clive Andrew, and Father Mazur - the author does a great job with character development and world-building, making the story easy to follow and exciting. Though I did notice that the name of the president varied from Conchrane to Cochrane on a number of occasions throughout the book.

In this political thriller, Robert Thornton does not disappoint. Lethal Hope explores a rogue ruler’s attempt to rise to power, but thanks to the medical aspect woven into the plot, it becomes clear that more than just political maneuvers are needed for the villains to succeed. While many would expect military might to dominate the story, Thornton cleverly shifts focus to medical expertise, a refreshing and strategic choice.

Overall, I found reading Lethal Hope to be enjoyable and I highly recommend the book to everyone who loves political fiction action stories.

Refreshingly Authentic Political Thriller, with some negatives

Hope’s childhood encounter that caused the death of her parents and left her injured turned her life. The trauma instilled a hypervigilance as a result of that PTSD, but at the same time that hypervigilance made her a heroine on the other hand.

Unfortunately, there are also a handful of key plot points that are so unlikely that they undermine those good attributes. It’s inconceivable that there wouldn’t be an immediate investigation into a missing Capitol guard, and that there would be no video of the Capitol’s loading dock. No special-forces level team would seek their quarry on a cold night without night-vision goggles. Nor could a civilian evade them for hours while carrying someone.

In the early pages of the book, I found the descriptive language to be over-emphasized and almost juvenile, particularly when describing people’s appearances. That slowed the pace when it was just beginning to build.

Overall, I believe that this book would probably be enjoyed by enthusiasts of political action (and maybe by people who enjoyed the writings of an author such as Patricia Cornwell – a strong female lead with a medical background). I found this to be a good quick read (about three days) but at points it was tedious.

The story moves along at a relatively quick pace with more than enough twists to keep the reader interested. On a five-star scale, I would give this three and a half stars (which would round up to four stars).

As with all my literary ramblings, these are just my five cents worth.

Beneath the veil of Democracy: A Cure for Power

In Robert Thornton's LETHAL HOPE: A HOPE ALLERD NOVEL, political intrigue is interweaved with medical expertise and practice, creating a gripping thriller set in a post-election America on the brink of collapse. The protagonist, Dr. Hope Allerd, a specialist in infectious diseases, is thrust into a chaotic political landscape after an ultra-conservative faction, led by General B. Armstrong, seeks to dismantle the U.S. government. As tensions rise, Allerd finds herself entangled in a conspiracy where the fate of democracy rests on her ability to expose Armstrong's plot before he declares himself a sempiternous ruler. The narrative, echoing present-day anxieties, blends political turmoil with individual ethics in a race against time.

Thornton’s selection of a protagonist diverges from the traditional political or military figure typically found in this genre. By placing Dr Allerd, a medical professional, at the centre of a national crisis, the novel offers a reinvigorated outlook on political thrillers. Hope’s investigative journey, through the lens of a physician, reveals the intricate and perilous connections between power, ambition, and authoritarianism, as Armstrong's character is depicted as a formidable antagonist driven by his desire to seize control. Her unique expertise, though unrelated to governance, becomes vital in uncovering the broader implications of the plot, giving the narrative both swiftness and depth.

Thornton cleverly injects themes of power, corruption, and moral conflict into the fast-paced storyline, making the novel resonate with modern political concerns. As Dr Allerd navigates through the maze of deception, the novel asks crucial questions about the role of individuals in preserving democracy. A thought-provoking addition for the genre enthusiasts!

In this thrilling narrative, infectious diseases specialist Hope Allerd, M.D., finds herself navigating a dangerous political landscape following a tumultuous U.S. Presidential election. The premise of this book feels like it’s been plucked straight from modern-day headlines, blending political intrigue, military maneuvering, and the ever-present threat of a dictatorship.

Dr. Hope Allerd is not your typical political protagonist—her expertise lies in the world of medicine, not governance. Yet her character’s intelligence and determination make her a compelling figure as she uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to upend democracy. Her investigation reveals a chilling plot spearheaded by General Benjamin Armstrong, an ambitious and ruthless figure seeking to overthrow the government and declare himself "President for Life."

The novel’s pacing is relentless, keeping the reader hooked as Hope races against time to expose the plot. Armstrong's character is a menacing and unpredictable antagonist, giving the story tension and urgency as his plan to decapitate the country's leadership unfolds.

Refreshingly Authentic Political Thriller

Lethal Hope: A Hope Allerd Novel is a 363-page, 60-chapter, and September 2024 book authored by Robert Thornton. Like its sequel Fatal Hope, it predominantly features physician Hope Allerd who is at the center of a deadly superpower struggle amid a high-profile sabotage, well-planned hostile presidential transition, unethical human experimentation, revenge, banned weapons, cryptic messages, mysterious military unit, trauma, and carnage.

She especially teams up with her computer genius-and-hacker brother Jack, fiancé-and-investigative reporter Clive Andrew, and Father Mazur in her quest to nip a looming mass destruction in the bud. However, Hope soon realizes that, despite having the ear of the U.S. President Martha Conchrane—and the goodwill of the Oval Office—she may not be a match for the extremists affiliated with the rogue Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Benjamin Davis Armstrong whose pursuit of the presidential position knows no bounds.

From Eastern Europe to the U.S., from land to sea to air, and at home and away, Hope and her sidekicks are assailed by immense overt and covert threats; where the characters’s objective and subjective actions and reactions may tip the scales in favor of patriotism or extremism, and, ultimately, uphold democracy or quash tyranny. A political thriller, Lethal Hope is refreshingly authentic.

A Suspenseful Political Thriller

Lethal Hope by Robert Thornton is an interesting work of political fiction action story. The plot features Hope Allerd, an infectious disease doctor who uncovers a conspiracy to overthrow the government and establish a dictatorship rule by a corrupt General.

The author did a great job with character development and world-building, making the story easy to follow and exciting. Hope’s childhood encounter that caused the death of her parents and left her injured turned her life. The trauma instilled a supernormal vigil as a result of PTSD that made her a heroine on the other hand.

Dr. Hope is the "hope" of a just society as she struggles to stop the conspiracy. But will she succeed? Find out in this immersive and suspenseful story that is exciting and captivating to read.

The story depicts today's modern world political reality and attempts by power-hungry dictators to seize control through corrupt means. I like the author’s choice of language and use of a balanced conversational tone. Also, the plot is so descriptive that reading the book felt like witnessing the events happen.

I enjoyed reading Lethal Hope and I highly recommend the book to everyone who loves political fiction action stories.

Set in a politically tense post-presidential election America, Lethal Hope offers a gripping plot that delves into contemporary issues affecting society today. Dr. Hope’s character stands as a beacon of hope in what many would consider a hostile political environment. Will she allow corruption and personal interests to overshadow the greater good of America’s population? Or will she survive to “see the glorious new government…A splendid America that will last ten thousand years?”
Dr. Hope is portrayed as a 'savior' in a season dominated by political and moral dilemmas. Will the political elites succeed in their plans, or will Dr. Hope intervene and save the people? I guarantee you will be hooked as the plot unfolds from cover to cover.

Lethal Hope by Robert Thornton is a riveting political thriller that follows infectious disease specialist Dr. Hope Allerd as she gets caught up in a sinister plot following a closely watched presidential election. Hope learns that the brutal military commander General Benjamin Armstrong is preparing to topple the government and establish himself as dictator. Hope faces multiple dangers to her life and the future of the country as she rushes to reveal his scheme.Thornton's narrative moves quickly and is rife with political intrigue and suspense. While General Armstrong makes for an engaging antagonist, Hope Allerd is a singular and noble protagonist. The novel deftly strikes a balance between action and a critical examination of political themes like democracy, power, and the perilous nature of freedom.Even though there are moments when the plot gets too dramatic, it's still a gripping thriller that addresses contemporary political issues. Lethal Hope is exceptional in its genre because of Thornton's skill at fusing political critique with an exciting narrative. For fans of intense political dramas with nuanced characters and never-ending suspense, it's a must-read.

I received an ARC through "Booksirens" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This story begins with a Russian arms dealer and an American making a deal on a certain type of weapon. The Russian has prepared a demonstration on the effectiveness of this product, it is quite deadly. The story then turns to the island where Hope is living. Once she finished her rounds, she decided to take a swim. As a result of her actions, her two bodyguards are killed and she is also attacked. She manages to escape and soon she and her fiancée, Clive, are in a plane to the U.S. Once more, she and Clive mange to avoid death.

Upon arriving in the U.S., they travel to D.C. where Hope begins looking into a terrorist attack that will kill many people. In order to learn more, she joins a speaking tour the Chairman of the JCS is leading. It during this time that she discovers what is going on. As a result, she faces a lot of danger.

To learn what the product that the demonstration was, what Hope discovered and how it all worked out in the end, then you must read this book.

The ending for me left a lot of questions and I look forward to reading more. Don't miss out, get this book!

Constant excitement!

This novel starts with action and finishes with action, along with thrills and suspense throughout. It sounds silly, but I found it hard to put down because I was afraid I would miss something!

While this book was a work of fiction, it brought out many of those underlying fears we have about possible government conspiracies and rebel takeovers. The author has taken those "what if" scenarios we all think about after listening to the news these past few years and created an engaging story of intrigue.

Anyone who likes action movies or conspiracy theories will love this. It also really makes you think about what we consider good and bad, or if it is all just shades of gray.

Wow, quite the page turner and what an unexpected ending. Hope was a very interesting character as she was very idealistic, yet crossed some boundaries that seemed a bit much. Her brother was a part of the story but more background than I initially thought he would be. Clive, her fiancee was a key character in helping to solve the mystery (or is it mysteries).

This story has political intrigue, lots of misdirection with various characters that were not what they seemed, a bit of romance and some violence. They have to track a bio weapon and some very shady operators.

I plan to look for other books by this author as I really enjoyed the book.

Rounding up from a 3.5.

Hope Allerd refocuses her puzzle solving mind from infectious disease to preventing a deadly coup. Clearly taking notes from the events of 2021, Robert Thornton puts a heroine at the heart of it all. This book is exceptionally plot driven - I think if you're a character person, a different Hope Allerd tale might be your style, as we don't get to know much about the characters (except for some concerning jumps to conclusions on Hope's end...I don't have high expectations for her role as a step mother).

Overall, if you're looking for a quick, action-packed read with a lot of parallels to modern politics, Fatal Hope will be right up your alley.

There’s never a dull moment in this action-packed thriller! Combining elements of political intrigue with action and a hint of sci-fi, author Robert Thornton has created a thrilling novel centered around Hope Allerd, a medical doctor uniquely poised to handle the job when a rebel faction attempts to seize control of the U.S. presidency.

The book shines through for its exposition and pacing. Thornton knows how to pace a story properly and deliver a punchy (no pun intended) action scene! There are a few parallels to modern politics in the story as well.

I would recommend this book to fans of action stories.

Nope. Just nope. I think the POS currently residing in the white house really is trying to destroy the U.S., turn it into a dictatorship and himself as president for life, with the help of his multi-billionaire owner, Elongated Muskrat, the support of the corrupt, insane GOP lawmakers and cheers from his brainwashed, ignorant MAGA cultists. However this book is just way too convoluted. I feel the author was hoping to draw in readers with his comparisons to the people in power in his book to the real life criminals running this country today, but for me, the book was plain nonsense.

Main character is not very likeable. She's a doctor that hardly spent time with patients, rather more of a trying-to-be, hard-headed heroine/spy (always putting herself in harms way). Also, the nonstop mention of EQV is distracting and irritating at times.

The story has a lot of potential. The general plot is believable and could have been very exciting, if not for the distractions mentioned above.
