With his marriage collapsing and grief-stricken following the death of his baby son, surgeon Dan Lewis is struggling to make sense of it all. His work is his lifeline. But when he fixates on a child patient he thinks has a potentially lethal disease, no one believes the diagnosis. They all think he’s losing his mind.
When one of Dan’s critics is senselessly murdered and the evidence points to the damaged doctor as the prime suspect, his bad situation becomes desperate.
But there’s a dark secret linking the ill child and the murder victim. One that no one other than Dan can see. Can he overcome his paralyzing despair to reveal the truth and clear himself? And if he does, will he be in time to save an innocent child from a terrifying fate?
Dylan Young was born in a mining village in the Swansea valley in Wales where he attended primary and secondary schools. In 1974, he was offered a place at Medical school in London and qualified in 1979. Medicine and a family followed, but writing as Dylan Jones, he published 4 novels in the nineties, two of which were filmed by the BBC. In 2011, Random House re-released two of the books in the Natalie Vine series as ebooks. Dylan Jones now writes children's fiction as Rhys A Jones and contemporary urban fantasy as DC farmer. But crime never went away. The first in his new series featuring Detective Inspector Anna Gwynne, is due for release in January 2018. Two more books will follow. Dylan Lives with his wife in West Wales where the landscape (and the weather!) provide ample inspiration for his books.
Eye Surgeon Dan Lewis and his wife Kate are still grieving over the death of their infant son. Kate seems to have handled her grief better then Dan. She's become active in the community, seeing friends, etc. Dan has his job and he's not doing well there, either.
One of Dan's new patients is a nervous mother bringing her young son in for an exam. Dan thinks he sees something on the back of one of the boy's eyes. Dan wants to do more testing to rule out the most serious causes, but the mom flees.
Later on, Dan learns that the woman's husband is the founder of an organization that focuses on alternate medicine ... and he has a real hatred of practicing physicians.
When one of Dan’s critics is senselessly murdered and the evidence points to the damaged doctor as the prime suspect, his bad situation becomes desperate.
But there’s a dark secret linking the ill child and the murder victim. One that no one other than Dan can see.
This is very well written with truly credible characters. I could feel the angst when their young son was accidentally strangled in his crib. Watching how each handled that loss was gripping. The frustration Dan felt when no one believed what was happening had me almost angry. This one is a real nail biter leading to an astonishing ending.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of THE APPOINTMENT. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
If I had to review this book in just two words they would be "Simply Fantastic". I don't think I have ever read a book so quickly. Fast paced from start to finish leaving your heart in your mouth and pulse racing.
The Appointment is a fantastic psychological thriller that draws you in from the start. Eye Specialist Dan Lewis still grieving over the death of his son and the end of his marriage when a young boy William Shane Bliss came into his eye clinic. On inspection of William's eyes, Dan Lewis found an anomaly in one eye and made an appointment to see him next week. However, William did not come back to the clinic, and Dan Lewis became suspect in a murder. The readers of The Appointment will continue to follow Dan Lewis to see what happens.
The Appointment is the first book I have read of Dylan Young, and I did enjoy reading this book. I love Dylan Young's portrayal of his characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. I like Dylan Young's descriptions of the settings and the way the settings complimented the plot of this book. The Appointment is well written and researched by Dylan Young.
The readers of The Appointment will learn about the role of ophthalmologists. Also, the readers will learn about the importance of safety around babies' cots.
I have been a fan of Dylan Young and his work for quite a while now. I read the synopsis for 'The Appointment' and it certainly sounded like one hell of a read. I couldn't wait to dive in and so I eagerly began to read. Blooming heck 'The Appointment' is most definitely one hell of a read and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, but more about that in a bit. I wasn't quite sure how to take Dan Lewis and I can't say that I warmed to him much at all. He is a hospital doctor and at the start of the book, he is married and he has a young son. I really did feel for Dan because he suffers the tragedy that nobody should have to suffer- the death of a child in an accident. I felt for him because my brother died at 4 days old as a result of his illnesses, and I know how badly the death of my brother affected my parents then and now. It really does affect play tricks with your mind. That said, he does seem to fixate on a young boy, who attends one of his clinics. Dan spots something wrong in the boy's eye but he is the only one who seems to be able to spot the problem. I wasn't sure if Dan was imagining it and my mind kept changing as to what was real and what, if anything, was imaginary. Everybody else in the story seems to think that Dan is losing the plot and his cause isn't helped when one of his colleagues is murdered. The evidence certainly points to Dan as being the main suspect. Is Dan guilty of the murder of his colleague? Is Dan imagining things that just aren't there? Is Dan right in his diagnosis of the boy's condition? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out was I am not going to tell you. Oh. My. Goodness. Me. 'The Appointment' has to be one of my top reads of the year. I was hooked on this book from the moment I picked it up. I just couldn't put it down. The book wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I didn't want to miss a single second of this book. In a sense, it was as if the book had developed a hold over me and I feared breaking that hold if I was to put the book to one side. The pages turned increasingly quickly as my desperation to unearth the truth steadily increased. I binge read the book over the course of a day. It seemed to take me no time at all to get to the end of the book, which I was so disappointed about. Don't get me wrong I wasn't disappointed with how the story ended but I was enjoying the author's writing style, the characters and the storylines so much that I just wanted the book to continue for a lot longer. Reading this book definitely felt like a pleasure and not a chore. 'The Appointment' is extremely well written but then I wouldn't expect anything else from Dylan Young. The story certainly started with a memorable and devastating event, which has ensured that this book will stay fresh in my mind for a very long time to come. Once Dylan had my attention, he just didn't let it go nor did he let my attention wander, which is quite an achievement. I usually have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but not in this case. I think part of the reason why I became so wrapped up in the story was that it messed with my head somewhat. I wasn't sure who or what to believe and all the way through the story I kept changing my mind as to what had really happened and who was really guilty before changing my mind back again. I had to concentrate very hard on the story and I had to keep reading to find out the truth. For me, 'The Appointment' is perfectly paced. It is a little slow to get going but that is down to the fact that the author needs to set the scene, develop the storylines and characters and create the right level of tension, which he does superbly. Reading this book was very much like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way- some of which I was expecting and some of which crept up on me and tapped me on the shoulder when I was least expecting it. I was left feeling as though I had been punched in the gut and had the breath knocked out of me. There were almost times when I had to read through my fingers as I feared what was going to happen next. I then gave myself a bit of a talking to and I realised that if I wanted to know how the story ended, then I had to pull up my big girl's pants and continue reading. In a nutshell, I absolutely, totally and utterly flipping well loved reading 'The Appointment'. Dylan Young has done it again and written one hell of a book that is sure to soar to the top of the best sellers list and that is nothing less than he deserves. I would definitely recommend Dylan and his books to other readers. I can't wait to read what he comes up with next. Here's hoping that we don't have too long to wait. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
The first chapter was horrifying. The next couple were good but I found that the Bliss/Dan thing was a bit too “Hollywood”. Regardless of the doctors mental condition his thinking was not normal nor suitable for a diagnosis of depression, PTSD or any other DSM-5 TR condition.
The book was great at the beginning had good parts in a mediocre middle and a fairly good ending
This was a brilliant read. From start to finish I was gripped. When I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it.
Dan and his wife Kate are still grieving over the death of their infant son. While Kate is coping as well as expected Dan is struggling. Dan throws himself into his job as an eye surgeon.
A routine exam on a young boy has Dan obsessed about the boy. A murder turns Dans life upside down.
This is a well written fast paced story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.
This was a great book. An unusual concept in some ways but it works fantastically. I think the bad guy in this was really one of the most despicable ever created. It all starts with an appointment when a mother brings her son to get his eyes checked out. The doctor spots something that could be nothing or could be very serious. However he senses from the very first moment that things arent quite right with this family. He can't put his finger on it, but there's obvious favouritism to the daughter, and the threat of dad that makes the young boy collapse into uncontrollable sobs. The doctor would like the boy to have a more thorough examination, but meets resistance. What follows is a harrowing ordeal for this doctor. The lengths that someone will go to to stop the truth coming out is off the chart. The people close to him think he's being paranoid or has a vendetta. They also think it's linked to the death of his own son, and even his wife can't accept that he's handling it as he should be. In a way it's frustrating to read because you know the truth and want the bad guy to get found out because he's so evil. After the doctor is left tied up to a wheelchair slowly bleeding to death and the truth so close to coming out, will it all come good. I highly recommend that you red it to find out. One of my top reads so far this year.
Dan Lewis is a surgeon, he’s still trying to come to terms with the tragic death of his young son, Theo. When a young boy, William, is brought to his office for an eye examination, his emotions are all over the place. But he notices something in one of William’s eyes, poor William is now upset so they make another appointment to give him time to calm down.
William’s Dad is angry, he feels Dan is victimising him due to his religion, he’s a healer and should be able to heal William himself. Is he really a caring father?
What follows is an emotion packed thriller. Dan and Kate are a mess, trying to deal with bereavement, Bliss is just terrifying in his relentless torment of Dan. No one believes Dan, they think he is imagining everything due to his emotional state, it’s not the first time he’s imagined things …..Will Dan be able to convince them Bliss is a dangerous man? Can he get William the treatment he needs?
Full of twists and secrets from the completely heartbreaking start to marvellously shocking yet satisfying ending…….brilliant.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.
What a thriller this is!!!!! Dan is an eye specialist, is happily married and has a beautiful little boy. His son tragically dies and he is devastated but he tries to get on with life the best he can. A little boy is referred to him with a problem with his eye, Dan thinks it's a potentially serious disease but the boy's mother and father won't listen and avoid bringing him back ...... WHY!!!!! This is when the story really kicks off. Twists, turns it has it all. A brilliant story.
Fantastic book! Dan has everything then his baby son passes away, cue the exhilerating gasp moments! Just as you think its done the speed ramps up! Has all the ingredients of a psychological thriller that you need. kept me on the edge of my seat a few times! Highly recommended read!
Wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can count. It is a thrilling read, and I really felt that I knew and cared about Dan, our main character.
I highly recommend this book, but beware! Don’t make plans when you start to read this, as you won’t be able to put it down...
I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of The Appointment by Dylan Young. What a fantastic read. It is the first book by Dylan that I have read, but I will be looking for more by him. The pace of the story was just relentless and it was so gripping, I couldn’t stop reading it. I was also in tears in a few places. I highly recommend this.
excellent! beautifully written, believable, with many surprises. Good care of their development. My first read by this author, and it will certainly not be my last.
Holy schnikes Batman!!! The Appointment by Dylan Young is a fairly short book, but it definitely packs a wallop.
What it's about: Dan Lewis is an ophthalmic surgeon who has had a really hard time after the death of his young son. He becomes fixated on a small boy brought in by his mother who appears to have something on his eye, but he can't tell for sure due to the boy not sitting still long enough. The boy's father is against medicine and refuses to let Dan see him again. What follows is Dan's obsession with seeing the boy again and getting linked to a murder. Dan is deeply out of control, but so is the boy's father. Will Dan be able to pull away from the darkness that haunts him to help the boy and prove he didn't murder anyone?
Wow, The Appointment was totally not what I was expecting, and it really blew me away. There was something going on the entire time, and although the ending confused me a bit, it was a crazy ending to a crazy book. The chapters are really short which made the book seem to go by very quickly, and viewpoints did jump around a little bit but mostly stayed on Dan's.
I can't say that I was really a fan of any of the characters in this book, not even Dan although he did do some things that were decent. I also found myself calling Dan an idiot a few different times, but probably because I read about crime too much! I don't condone all of his choices in this book, but I did find myself on his side most of the time though.
I think it is a great idea to go into The Appointment fairly blind, which is what I did. I read and forgot the synopsis so most of what happened came as a surprise to me. I loved the suspense and how it built as you read, I had myself prepared for a fantastic ending, and that is exactly what I got. There was some disturbing content as well so I would say this book isn't for the faint of heart or squeamish individuals.
Song/s the book brought to mind: A mix of Just Give Me a Reason by Pink & Nate Ruess and Angel by Sarah McLachlan.
Final Thought: If you like a suspenseful, twisty book that at times feels a bit like a police procedural then you will LOVE The Appointment. The creep factor was high, and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time, in other words - this is a real nail-biter! Now I just need Young to explain the ending to me...
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
This is the first time I have read this author and I was not disappointed by this story. It was well thought out, researched and written. That’s why I like trying new authors, new ideas etc. This book certainly had that!
Dan is a terrific eye surgeon and all his clinics are busy. He has a lovely wife and a great little baby boy, life couldn’t be better. Then disaster strikes. One morning, the couple wake and can’t believe they have not been woken by their baby. When Dan goes up to check, he finds every parent’s worst nightmare and that his baby isn’t breathing. The couple struggle to cope, Dan turns to his work as his lifeline.
Weeks later when Dan returns to work, in one of his clinics there is a little boy that has an appointment to have his eyes checked. The boy is very well behaved but Dan sees something in his eye that he wants to check further to make sure he is right about his diagnosis. He requires the child to come back for a second visit but the mother doesn’t think it’s possible, she will discuss with her husband and let him know. Dan makes an appointment anyway. As the family leave, Dan wanders outside for some fresh air and sees them getting into a range rover and the mother talking to someone in the car, presumably her husband. He can’t hear what is being said but the husband doesn’t seem happy.
One evening, when Dan got home from work, he could faintly hear…..twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. No, is mind must be playing tricks on him. Then faintly he heard it again. So, he dropped everything by the front door and went round the back. His first thought was Kate was home doing some decluttering. There was a man leaning on the fence. It was the boy’s father. He hinted things could go wrong for Dan etc if he did not leave his boy alone?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was so intense and nail biting, I really found it unputdownable! The writing was very descriptive and you could feel the tension that was happening in the book, it was like sitting on the edge of your seat at times! A really good twist in this book too!! Definitely 5 out of 5 stars from me. I will be trying out his other books.
Dan is an ophthalmic surgeon. He and his wife have a young son Theo. When tragedy strikes, things are never quite the same and whilst his wife grieves quietly and decides that life goes on, Dan is still reminded of the past every day. One day he sees a young boy in clinic whom he suspects has something going on at the back of his eye, but needs more tests to be certain. The mother is very stern with the child, something she isn’t when dealing with his sister and threatens him with his father. Dan finds the father in his garden telling him in no uncertain terms to leave well alone. Dan feels that the child has a right to be examined and treated and take it further, all the while others are wondering if this has anything to do with Theo in Dan’s head.OMG! I felt for Dan and his concern as well as professional concern and conduct about the child William’s condition and the difficult path against non evidence based medicine that some are determined to follow. I had to keep turning to find out what happened next, so well is the tension written and the characters portrayed.A book of torment and revenge, a cleverly thought out plot and one to keep you thinking. This is my first book by Dylan Jones and won’t be the last. For more reviews please see my blog http://nickibookblog.blogspot.co.uk/ or follow me on Twitter @nickisbookblog
The Appointment starts as it means to go on, it has a strong and incredibly frightening opening, especially for a parent of a child who has the same sleeping pattern as our protagonist. I read the opening chapter in bed, and I have to say, I was never happier when I was awoken by my toddler that night.
There is a wonderful sense of "Cat and Mouse" between Dan and Bliss throughout the book but given how the story is told, we are left guessing who is chasing who. Given Dan's past, and the observations of his friends it is hard to see if his experiences are actually happening, which of course adds to the intrigue in the story.
The author's experience of the NHS (and it's failings) seeps through, as does the author's field of expertise. Again, this adds a sense of reality to the situations involved.
Dan is an intriguing character, and I have to admit, on more than one occasion I found myself saying "WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU IDIOT!!!", but on reflection, I think his decision making was due to his psychological state, and added to the story.
Bliss on the other hand is a fantastic character, and I loved how he developed.
The book really comes alive in the second half. It was at times brilliant, thoroughly engaging, and has an ending that took my breath away. Would definitely recommend to fans of the genre.
It started as just a regular appointment with William Bliss for opthalmic surgeon Dan Lewis. But what unfolds will change Dan’s life forever.
Dan is already unable to come to terms with the huge loss of his young son Theo; his relationship with his wife is falling apart, and he is at risk of pushing his wife Kate even further away.
Enter Hugo Bliss…. A man who intends to get what he wants by any means possible. And Dan’s life begins to spiral rapidly out of control.
Is it all really happening? Is it all in his mind? Or is he just losing it?
Then just when Dan thinks things can’t get any worse he is arrested on suspicion of rape and murder.
As everything begins crashing down around him he begins to doubt his own sanity.
How can any of this end well?
Ohhhhh my GOSH! This was GOOD! At first I wasn't to sure but a little under a quarter of the way in;it grabbed me, pulled me in and wouldn't let me put it down until I had finished it!
This is a cracking read !! For me, it was a slow starter but it soon hots up and you will be whizzing through the pages to find out what happens.
It all begins with Dan and Kate and the harrowing death of their young baby, Theo. A few months later Dan returns to work to try and get back to some sort of normality. But a routine appointment with a little boy, William Bliss, starts off a very scary turn of events involving Hugo Bliss, the boys father.
Dan’s life suddenly seems to be spiralling out of control. No-one seems to believe him ? Is he imaging things ? What is really going on ?
This is such a tense psychological thriller that will have you hooked. Although it takes a while to warm up you will be glad you stuck with it as it is a real page turner with plenty of twists and turns.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for a digital copy of this book.
Hard hitting, brilliantly researched novel, following an eye specialist's spectacular fall, then rise to grace, as he is embroiled in a harrowing case, which pushes his own mind to the utter most limits of near insanity. This books sub plots, include, the controversial laws surrounding parental consent, on purely religious grounds. Kidnapping, abuse and other issues are also sensitively highlighted in this book. In some respects, similar to The Operation in writing style, but hey, same author, same joys. HIGHLY recommend.
An eminent ophthalmic surgeon and his wife have the perfect life or so it seems until the sudden death of their child turns their world upside down. Dan Lewis tries to carry on with his work as by helping other she is aiding his own recovery until a visit from a young woman, new to the area, whose son may have a serious eye problem however, she is not prepared to visit again and so the mystery begins! The story has a good pace with lots of twists and turns. You know who the 'baddie' is .....it's just a case of will he be caught. I would give it 4.5* overall as I personally feel that there are a couple of occasions when Dan (an intelligent and highly educated man) would not have done certain things - don't want to spoil the plot! Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the ARC to review.
This book was very hard to put down, I was so engrossed with it. Dan Lewis is a specialist eye surgeon whose life was going along great until his baby son died suddenly. If that wasn't bad enough someone set out to ruin his life all together. The author cleverly had you wondering if the stresses of losing his only child was sending him totally crazy and imagining all sorts of untold horrors happening to him or was it really happening. From cover to cover this book had everything you would expect from a psychological thriller. Dylan Young has done a superb job with this book and I would put it in a must read category. Thank you to bloodhound books for the advanced reading copy.
Wow what a book this one is, I was engrossed from the first few pages. I loved how the doctor and his wife both dealt with their sons death so differently. Every page had me wanting more and I found it difficult to put down. If you only read one book in the next few months make it this one.
I have read other books by this author but this one is by far the best. The way the tension is slowly wound up is very skillful and the reader becomes enthralled. I can often predict the outcome of a plot but not this one.
Enjoyed this book, good plot line and easy to read. Found at times I was frustrated by the Bliss character but overall I found this book to be very well written and look forward to Dylan Young's next book. Would definitely recommend.
This is one of those books that you can easily get through in a day. Every chapter is tension is enthralling. I found it thoroughly engrossing. And I will look out for more books by this author.
