This is book three of the Kenni Lowery Mystery Series by Tonni Kappes and its another winner. What is not to love when you have a strong female lead, Kenni who just happens to be the sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky where her office with its single cell is located in the back room of a diner on Main Street right in the middle of downtown? Her new sexy deputy is driving her crazy in a good way, plus she has her faithful companion, Duke who loves nothing more than belly rubs and dog treats. She can also communicate with her Poppa who was sheriff of Cottonwood while she growing up and even though hes been dead for several years he’s still pretty much in the know about the fine citizens of Cottonwood. He has helped her solve a few crimes in the past, the hard part is remembering while they are chatting away that no one can see him and it makes her look rather odd talking to herself in public. Her mother is the typical southern belle, which has no boundaries at all when it comes to Kenni and her job as sheriff. I love the way the characters interact with each other, it is so funny between the “Henny-Hens” rumor mill and the weekly girl’s night card game.
The one thing that did take Kenni by surprise was when the town’s famous resident, Beryl who happened to be a writer of the bodice ripping romance genre passes away and she finds out there will be a rather large estate sale. Not only that but, Beryl’s Assistant, Cecily is convinced that there is a tale all manuscript that is hidden among Beryl’s items and it needs to be returned to her publisher and fast before someone else gets their hands on it. Before things can get out of hand between her new deputy and herself, they find themselves interrupting a burglary and then stumble over a body behind one of Kenni’s good friend Ruby’s, Antique shop who is going also the executor of Beryl’s estate.
I really had a good time reading the latest book in this series and I am looking forward to the next one. This series is laugh out loud funny and we all need a good laugh! I would like to think the publisher and NetGalley for the providing me with an e-galley of this book for my honest review.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another fun, entertaining, crazy, cozy from Tonya Kappes. If you are not smiling and laughing when you are reading this story there is something wrong.

Cottonwood, Kentucky is mourning the loss of bestselling author Berlye Stone, their most famous resident. Then Berlye’s assistant is found with an ax in her back. Seems there is a tell all manuscript somewhere and that may have lead to the assistant’s death. Sheriff Kenni Lowry with a little help from her Poppa and Deputy Finn Vincent, is determined to find both the book and killer before someone axes her into the great beyond right along with her Poppa.

There was so much I loved about this story.

The characters are so strong and cleverly written. Kenni is such a strong protagonist. She is a darn good sheriff handling verything from neighborly disputes to murder. Her mother is an absolute hoot and a half, she is always deeply involved in one cause or another and right now she is campaigning for her daughters reelection. Kenni’s Poppa’s ghost returns just when she needs him, sometimes even before she knows she needs him. They relationship is so strong and heartwarming. It is funny too because only Kenni and her dog Duke can see the ghost. She sometimes forgets that and needs to quickly explain who the heck she is talking to. Deputy Finn Vincent is starting to put down roots in Cottonwood and that bodes very well for a real relationship with Kenni. The tricky part is, she is his boss, so going forward this will be quite interesting.

I really enjoyed the storyline too. An author, who is a bit of a recluse dies and everyone in town seems to be anxious and even afraid of what could be in this tell all book. Kenni learns that the characters in most of the steamy romance books she has written in the past have been based on residents from Cottonwood. This opens wide the list of suspects. She has never read any of the stories but she knows someone who has and that gives her clues to move her investigation forward. Small towns, you have to love them and there is no small town better than Cottonwood for a fantastic cozy mystery.

Southern charm, small town gossip, unique characters and a quality mystery you can stick your teeth into, Ax to Grind is a must read. It can be read all on its own but you really should start at the beginning and get introduced to Cottonwood and the folks that live there properly. Have you ordered you copy yet? What are you waiting for? 🙂

When local author Beryle Stone dies, her home and all its contents are being put up for auction. When Beryle's assistant shows up in town, she demands that Sheriff Kenni Lowry put security around the house. Apparently, there is a tell all hidden somewhere and it needs to be found before it is stolen. With Poppa showing up, Kenny knows that there is going to be a murder, something she does not need with an election coming up in the next year. When the assistant is found dead in an alley with an axe in her back, and the wife of the man running against Kenni is wounded by the same axe and ends up in a coma, Kenni is at a loss as to what has happened. With the ghost of her Poppa helping her as well as handsome deputy Finn, Kenni knows she had better solve this case soon! While this is going on the election has divided the town between Kenni and her former deputy, Lonnie.

I love the characters that inhabit this fictional town. Kenni Lowry is a strong female lead, who just happens to be the sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky. She has a sexy, new deputy who is driving her crazy in a good way and is talking about buying a house and putting down permanent roots in Cottonwood. I love her dog, Duke who loves nothing more than belly rubs and dog treats. Poppa is a great character, even though he is a ghost. He used to be the sheriff of Cottonwood while she was growing up and even though he's been dead for several years he’s still pretty much in the know about the citizens of Cottonwood and has helped her solve a few crimes in past books. Kenni is the only one who can see or communicate with him and as long as she remembers not to talk to him while others are watching, all is well. Her mother is the typical southern belle, who has no boundaries at all when it comes to Kenni and her job as sheriff. There are also the “Henny-Hens” and their rumor mill along with all the business owners that round out the town. Tonya Kappes is one of my favorite cozy authors and she always tells a great story with plenty of suspense and twists in it. The story moved quickly with a great plot, some humour and a touch of romance. I always love a mystery when I don't figure out the culprit, and this one was a nice surprise, yet the motive and clues all fit by the end. I definitely recommend this book to all cozy mystery lovers, especially if you like a Southern Mystery.

Set in the small southern town of Cottonwood, Kentucky, Ax To Grind is the third in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series. Having enjoyed the first two books and formed strong attachments to many of the charming and eccentric characters, I was psyched to see what was happening now.

The town’s celebrity author, Berlye Stone, recently passed away and there’s to be an estate sale for all of her belongings. Sounds exciting. Even more thrilling is that there’s supposed to be an unpublished manuscript, Berlye’s last book, hidden in her belongings. You can imagine what comes next.

Yep. Kenni and her sexy deputy, Finn, answer an alarm and discover Berlye’s estate executor, dead. The race is on to find the manuscript before bodies start piling up. Seems the tranquility Cottonwood has been enjoying has come to a deadly end.

I just love Kenni. She’s a pickle and such a southern rebel. She defies the stereotype southern belle, choosing to serve the law and dish it out when necessary. She loves her family, her sweetie and four-legged companion, Duke, and wishes her deputy Finn, might be a sweetie of the two-legged kind.

Almost forgot the ghost. Kenni’s Poppa is still hanging around and uses his knowledge to help her solve the case. She keeps forgetting not to talk to him in public as the town spies her talking to herself and think she’s a bitty around the bend.

As with most small towns, there’s plenty of characters in all guises to keep you entertained and laughing out loud. The mystery keeps you guessing, and the brush with romance adds some titillation to the story.

Tonya delivers another winner. And what’s more fun than a mystery about a writer and a missing manuscript.

If you haven’t read the first two books, no worries. You can jump in here and get the skinny about the town and characters fairly quickly. I’d recommend you read them though. Why miss out on all that fun.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

“Ax to Grind” earns 5/5 Tell-alls about a Town Full of Secrets!

This third book in Tonya Kappes Kenni Lowry series does not disappoint and has further solidified my delight in all things Tonya writes. Newbies need not worry, there is enough information to keep you entertained. Just think…Life in Cottonwood has been quiet for four months, meaning no murders as of late, and along with sharing the various quirks of Kentucky society with transplanted northerner and new deputy Finn Vincent, Sheriff Kenni Lowry has been dealing with the upcoming election. But Kenni gets interested in the squawking of Kiwi, the Inn’s green macaw mascot…Something about Berlye’s? Something about a book? Something about dead? Oh dear, how do you interrogate a parrot? Whew! I was quickly turning the pages in this engaging mystery, thrilled with all the twists and turns: Berlye Stone, bestselling author and Cottonwood’s most famous resident, recently died and an estate auction has been scheduled. However, residents of Cottonwood discover that before her death she penned a ‘tell-all’ book exposing secrets that would be best kept in closets or under the rug. But when Poppa appears, they know a crime must be brewing… My inner Sherlock was delightfully challenged with this and on the edge of my seat with the “I didn’t see that coming!” ending. This Yankee loved the southern characters; Momma reminds me of my grandmother who was a southern belle at heart. Playing out in the background we have delightful references to all things southern (manners and Derby Pie), the reelection campaign with a former colleague now competition, an endearing ghostly dynamic between Kenni-bug and her Poppa, and a bit of an ‘office’ romance. Do you hear the ‘sigh’? You can read the series out of order, no spoilers in this book, but I recommend for a complete experience to start at the beginning…

"Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. However, all of the above opinions are my own.”

Ax to Grind is the 3rd book in the Kenni Lowry Series by Tonya Kappes. Sheriff Kenni Lowry is surprised and happy to see her grandfather’s ghost. She is not surprised because she sees his ghost but that she is seeing his ghost without a crime having occurred. His ghost usually does not appear unless there has been a major crime committed. She loves spending time with her grandpa even if he is a ghost, but she has her hands full with her re-election, her feeling her Deputy Vincent, and her mother’s “help” of dealing with both election and Deputy Vincent. When a body is found, Kenni has to put her feeling and everything else on hold until the murder has been solved. Can she solve the murder, enjoy working with her grandpa, and work through her feelings for Vincent without losing the election before it even starts?

I love this series. The characters are great and the setting is full of small town charm. Being a southern from a small town I can really relate to the characters; how everyone knows everyone and gossip spreads like wildfire. I love how Mrs. Kappas writes her characters to be smart and witty and full of southern charm without being too over the top and stereotypical. I love the touches of dialect she includes this adds to the hilarity of the story. Although this is what I enjoy and can relate to, you do not have to be a southern to understand or enjoy this book.

The book is well written, great story line, full of twist and turns, and great pace. True to cozy genre there is no bad language and no graphic sex or violence. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good mystery with a touch of humor.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, above is my honest opinion.

It's been like 4 years since I've read the first two books in this series, but I was able to pick back up quickly! I forgot how much I love the team of Kenni and her grandfather. I had a feeling I knew who the killer was, then got a little thrown, but then the reveal at the end explained it all perfectly. I had no idea that Berlye's secrets would end up what they were. Great story and I hope I get to the next one soon and not after so many years again.

I've seen a few glowing reviews for the author's Ghostly Southern series and this has been my year to explore the cozy mysteries so when I spotted this one with its fall-flavored small town setting and mild paranormal elements, I leaped at the opportunity.

Ax to Grind is the third book in the Kenni Lowry series, but it worked just fine getting it out of order. I was able to see how characters and certain plot threads had carried through the series, but it was easy to pick this one up and read.

I'm a sucker for small town settings and humorous tones to the writing so right away I was prepared to settle in and enjoy. Which I did. The main character, Kenni, is the town sheriff. She's got a bossy, nosey mother, an election campaign, busy body town people, and a growing attraction for her new deputy, and then her granddad's ghost appears as the harbinger to a murder.

The mystery in this one was a nice little challenge, but its definitely light and cozy in feel to the story that is equally occupied with other plot threads. I enjoyed following Kenni around town as she worked to put out personal and political fires right along with working on the case with Finn, her deputy. The attraction to Finn is distracting to her, but not unwelcome. It seems like it will be a slow-build ongoing thread through the series.

The scenes with her mother just cracked me up- that woman, much of the town residents, and poppa's ghost were over the top in a fun way.

I didn't actually solve the mystery before the reveal. I had suspicions of the who and how, but had no clue about the why.

My first outing with the author and this series has increased my desire to get my hands on more of her books. I definitely want to go back and get the two earlier ones in this series and then progress to the other series. I think this would be a hit with cozy mystery fans who don't mind a pinch of paranormal and a quirky small town setting.

I rec'd this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

Tonya Kappes has the right combination of mystery, intrigue, with just a touch of romance and a ghostly sidekick in her Kenni Lowery Mystery series and the newest in the series Ax to Grind.
I was delighted to be approved to read book three in this series which is out September 19th and you can pre order now. Tonya writes with southern humor, hospitality and flair. I really loved the idea of a small town sheriff, her overzealous southern mother, a grandfather ghost and a partner who she would not kick out of bed for eating crackers....
Then there is the mystery and it is a good one, small town secrets keep and fester as the years go on and when a world renowned and reclusive romance author dies, leaving a huge estate sale open to the public that opens the small town up to the possibility of a murder living among them and scrutiny and leaves a mess of trouble for Kenni to unravel. Loved this one and think you will too!

The third book in the Kenni Lowry series. Noted author, Beryle Stone has died and her estate is being sold and auction off in Cottonwood Kentucky. Kenni is asked to provide police protection for the estate. Beetle wrote a novel that will tell all about the town before her death. The manuscript is missing and someone is searching for it. Poppa ghost is present again and Kenni flirts with Finn Vincent, her deputy. Lonnie, her former deputy is running for sheriff. Duke is honor by the town for saving Kenni' s life. The events will take Jenni in a circle as she struggled to make since of what is happening. The ending will surprise I recommend this book and series.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry has an election coming up so the last thing she needs on her hands is the murder of a local author's assistant right before the big estate sale at that author's house. Her Poppa always shows up when there's a murder but at first there was nothing so Kenni wondered just when this was going to happen. She didn't have to wonder very long!

With the ghost of her Poppa helping her as well as handsome deputy Finn, Kenni knows she had better crack this case soon! Other fun side stories include Finn buying a house on Kenni's street and the town being somewhat divided on the election which is between Kenni and her former deputy, Lonnie.

This was an awesome installment in this series! Tonya Kappes is one of my favorite authors and she always tells a great story with plenty of suspense and twists in it. I didn't guess the killer this time either. And...I absolutely loved the ending! You're just going to have to read it and see what happens!

This book was GREAT!!!
Kenni Lowery is the Sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky.
When writer Beryle Stone dies after returning to her home town, everyone is going crazy about this last manuscript she wrote. Cottonwood is full of secrets, and someone is out trying to make sure these secrets stay buried. All of Beryles items will be up for sale, someone is sure that it is hidden in a piece of furniture. Cecily Hoover, Beryles assistant is found dead and someone else is found unconscious. It is up to Kenni along with the help of her deputy Finn Vincent, and the ghost of her Poppa to find the manuscript, and the killer before someone else dies.
I love reading about these characters. They are so much fun!! I was very excited to receive an advanced copy for an honest review. I look forward to reading more in this series!!!

Ax To Grind by Tonya Kappes is the third book in the Kenni Lowry series.

This is a fun series and I love the mystery of why her poppa comes back at certain times.
Having poppa help her out while he is in ghost form is truly hilarious. How Kenni avoids speaking to him in public is beyond me.
In this story, a reclusive author has died and the town is full of gossip regarding her death and who receives all her money.
When family secrets are revealed, Kenni and her poppa are hot on the trail of the suspect.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Well bless your heart! You want to take a romp through Cottonwood, Kentucky? Go right ahead. Oh, be careful of the ax wielding killer who murdered Beryle Stone's assistant and almost killed Paige, Lonnie's wife (that no good Sheriff wannabe!!). Also, make sure you don't do anything in this town that you wouldn't want gossiped about and put in a tell-all book!! Oh, and don't forget Poppa the ghost! But that's ok, only Kenni can see him! And it's a good thing too because he helps her solve mysteries! All in all, this book is a great read so grab a glass of sweet tea and a plate of mama's beans and cornbread and sit back and enjoy this 3rd book in the Kenni Lowry mystery series!! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

This is a slow burning detective novel that will appeal to Midsomer Murders and Agatha Christie fans. It also has a touch of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Lassie about it, as the sheriff, Kenni Lowry, is greatly helped out by the ghost of her grandfather, Poppa, and her dog, Duke.
The small-town atmosphere of Cottonwood, with its gossiping “henny-hens”, rivalries and jealousies is well depicted, with everyone knowing (or thinking they know) everyone else’s business. Some people, though, are prepared to kill to keep their secrets hidden. Plenty of red herrings, and the murderer’s identity (and motives) come as a complete surprise.

This is Book Three in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series. Sheriff Kenni Lowry has help in solving her murder mysteries, and not just from her deputy, Finn. Every time a murder happens in Cottonwood, her late grandfather's ghost makes an appearance. The great thing about it is he was sheriff before her. He can be funny and make you laugh a lot. Sometimes that might not be such a great thing since Kenni is the only one who can see him! This author has a way with her characters. They are very distinct and easily stand out in their own ways. I loved this book and especially loved the ending. Come on Book Four!

One night in Ax to Grind by Tonya Kappes, Kenni Lowry, sheriff of the small town of Cottonwood, Kentucky, and Finn Vincent, her deputy, notice Kenni’s dog, Duke, barking and running towards Ruby’s Antique Shop. Next to the shop, they spot the body of Cecily Hoover with an axe in her back. Cecily has been serving as the assistant to Cottonwood’s most famous person to grow up in the town, prolific author Beryle Stone, who just recently died and whose death has brought many strangers to Cottonwood for the big estate sale of her possessions. Then, seeing broken glass in Ruby’s shop, the pair go inside and find Paige Lamar just barely clinging to life.

Oh my gosh that was amazing! I did not see that coming at all. I really enjoyed seeing some of Kenni's day to day sheriff duties, including keeping her mother's campaigning under control. The mystery was awesome, and I loved how Poppa had a personal connection to the case.

This was such an enjoyable, fun read! Never a dull moment in Cottonwood, Kentucky! Everyone is talking about the estate sale for Beryle Stone, who passed away. Beryle was an author who wrote romances. There is a rumor about a tell-all manuscript left behind, that is to be auctioned after Beryle's death. A juicy tidbit for the Henny-hens!

Cecily Hoover, Beryle's former assistant, requests Kenni Lowry, the Sheriff, to provide extra protection for the Stone estate sale. Poppa, Elmer Sims, the ghost of Kenni's grandfather makes an appearance. Poppa is a premonition, because when he shows up, so does crime.

While Kenni is contemplating about the appearance of her Poppa, and Beryle's death, and trying to locate a missing manuscript that Cecily swears Beryle was writing. Finn and Kenni come across Cecily dead body and another who was injured, both by an ax.

Kenni is starting to think, someone doesn't want the manuscript found. Kenni has to unravel quite a few secrets, along the way with help from Poppa.

I love this series! Along with Kenni's lovable dog, Duke, this story has a green Macaw named Kiwi, who is a bit of a Henny-hen itself. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I just love the quirky town. This case involves a writer who recently passed, and who is thought to have left a scandalous tell-all manuscript hidden in her home. It's been fun watching Sheriff Kenni try to sort out the mess while keeping her own mother out of jail for stirring up during her re-election campaign.

I thought I had figured out the killer, but then there was a twist that changed everything. I love when that happens. The quirky town and it's people certainly keep the book light and fun during something as serious as a murder investigation, and of course, there is Ghost Poppa. He's always a hoot.

I think the Kenni Lowry mystery series get better with each installment. AX TO GRIND, the third book in the series, does not disappoint, and I cannot wait to spend more time with Sheriff Kenni. Kappes achieves a great balance of mystery, humor, romance, the paranormal, and small town charm.

When Cottonwood’s most famous, and most private, resident, romance author Beryle Stone, dies, fans and citizens alike converge on the small southern town to buy a piece of Beryle at her estate sale. Rumor has it that she wrote one last book, a tell-all about the people in Cottonwood, and someone is willing to kill to keep those secrets hidden. When Beryle’s assistant is murdered and Kenni’s election rival’s wife Paige is found unconscious, Kenni, her deputy Finn, and her grandfather’s ghost all must work together to get to the bottom of everything.

AX TO GRIND is delightfully entertaining, and I adore the snap shot of small town Kentucky life that Kappes presents. I grew up in a small town and think I know some of these characters’ doppelgangers in real life. I like Kenni a great deal, her love of a good puzzle and her grandfather and her tenacious desire to do her job. It is difficult to be “the law” when most everyone in town has known you since you were in diapers, and I think she handles her challenges with grace and mettle. Her sidekick Finn is more than just eye candy, and I like the direction their relationship is heading. My favorite character has got to be Poppa. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to hang out with my grandfather again. Kenni and Poppa feed off each others’ strengths and make quite the investigative team. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention Kenni’s dog Duke. I appreciate that he is in almost every scene.

The mystery within these pages is solidly constructed with an even pace leading up to the climactic reveal of the villain. I admit that I did not guess whodunit or their motive. I love it when I cannot figure it all out early in the story – to me, that’s great storytelling. It is terrific fun to go along beside Kenni as she investigates and solves mysteries.

I highly recommend AX TO GRIND to any cozy mystery fan. Well developed characters and a flushed out mystery make for hours of enjoyment.

Every time I hear that the author has a new book out, I can't wait to get my hands on it. I love her quirky characters and the humor she places throughout the story. She describes the town in Kentucky so perfect that I want to live there. I have heard that in small towns everyone knows your business.. Well almost true. Ok maybe there are secrets in the town and someone is scared those secrets will be found out.

Kenni is my kind of person. She takes her job as sheriff seriously and I love her poppy so much. It sure is good company to have poppy around even though he is a ghost. Kenni's mom is kinda uppity and I love the banter between them. I can see Kenni rolling her eyes as her mama tries to run her business.

A very famous person has died in the town, and my how the "henny hens" go to gossiping. I loved them so much and laughed every time they got together. Beryle was a very successful author , but there is a vicious rumor that she has a hidden manuscript that is a tell all. What townspeople will be in the book? Who is worried that their secret will come out? When someone is found dead and another severely injured, Kenni and her deputy Finn have their hands full. I have to say I really liked the murder weapon that was used. I love that the author doesn't use the cliche gun or poison. She goes for a more unusual weapon and describes it with intensity that made my skin crawl. It's one crime scene that Kenni and Finn won't forget.

As the investigation continues more names come up about who might have killed to find the manuscript. One of the rumors is that Beryle wrote books that had bits and pieces of people from the town in it. What a perfect way to get back at someone. The little town of Cottonwood, Kentucky is rich in beauty and a secret that could damage reputations. What secrets did Beryle know that made someone desperate enough to kill. The book is well written and keeps readers on their toes as suspects pop up.This is one book you don't want to miss.

I received a copy of this book from The Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour. The review is my own opinion.

A chance overhead comment by a parrot launches Cottonwood, Kentucky Sheriff Kenni Lowery on a mystery involving the murder of a reclusive famous author with lots of secrets, and a long list of suspects, er, um, residents who might kill to keep those secrets secret. Word on the street is the author used real life incidents involving Cottonwood residents in her bodice-ripper novels, and was going to finally write a tell all naming names and pointing fingers.

Kenni’s investigation is complicated by the fact her Poppa is one of the people on the suspect list. Except, rather than be embarrassed by his secret, he’s kind of proud of it. And being as he’s dead anyway, that pretty much takes him out of the running. Poppa, Kenni’s grandfather, and the former Sheriff of Cottonwood, is bound to the earth to help keep Kenni safe. He was the reason she got into law enforcement in the first place, much to her mother’s dismay. Her mother wants her to be a proper Southern lady who lunches and does charity work. Her Poppa always supported her in life, and now he pops in and out to help her with her cases.

I love the rhythm of the writing in this series – it’s entertaining and conversational. The depiction of small town life is on the money – the characters might seem over-the-top, but I have lived in small towns and shared meals with folks like the ones in Cottonwood. The dialogue frequently makes me laugh outloud. I particularly enjoy the relationships between Kenni and her Poppa, and Kenni and Finn Vincent, her new deputy and possible love interest. While I don’t like Kenni’s mother much, I do like that Kenni treats her with respect (I’d have to cut that woman off at the knees myself).

I’m inadvertently reading this series out of order, but it’s still working for me. I think knowing the backstory enriches the reading experience, but In this case, these can be read out of order and still be enjoyed.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author and am voluntarily providing this review because I like this series so much. I also bought my own copy because I want a complete set of the Kenni Lowry stories.

Best Kenni Lowery murder, mystery yet!!!
Kendrick ( Kenni ) Lowry is the Sheriff in
the small, quaint town of Cottonwood,
Kentucky.
The town is jumping due to an estate sale
about to be held in the home lived in by
Cottonwoods famous author, Beryl Stone.
There is a unfinished, unpublished manuscript
that is hidden. It is going to be an expose of all
the town people's hidden secrets. Where is
it hidden? Who holds the key to the mystery?
Who will get to it first??!
The author's assistant ends up clobbered to
death with an ax near Ruby Smith's antique
store. The wife of a former deputy who was
once the housekeeper for the deceased author,
is found inside the store in critical condition.
Kenni and her deputy, Finn Vincent get right
on the investigation to find the culprits.
Kenni's grandfather Poppa's ghost is back
with her. He appears when she needs to
be encouraged in her investigative skills.
Up to now only Kenni and her ninety pound
hound dog, Duke can see and hear Poppa.
But now Kiwi, the town Inns' green macaw
mascot seems aware of Poppa's presence.
Kiwi is a great addition to the story.
Duke is presented with the Paws of
Distinction Award by the town for helping
in the last case.
Kenni has competition in the upcoming
election. The retired deputy had decided
to run against her causing tension among
the town residents.
Great creative characters will entertain the
reader. The story contains suspense, mystery,
secrets, intrigue, fast paced action with plenty
of humor, euchre games, the Henny-hens,
charm Southern style and a hint of romance.
I highly recommend this book!!!
I volunteered to read an Ax To Grind. Thanks
to the author for the opportunity. My opinion
is my own.

Ax To Grind is the 3rd book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by USA Today bestselling author Tonya Kappes. Kenni Lowry is the sheriff in Cottonwood, KY. Her grandfather, Poppa, in ghost form, looks out for her. With assistance from her ghost grandfather and hunky deputy Finn, Kenni sets out to catch a killer of Cottonwood’s most famous resident, romance author Beryle Stone. A short time later, Beryle's assistant, Cecily, is found murdered Lonnie, running against Kenni in the election for Sheriff, vows to be the first to solve the murder. Determined to prove she is the most appropriate candidate for Sheriff, Kenni must quickly determine who would want Cecily dead and why. Small towns are renowned for deeply burying secrets which come to light during the investigation. Worse, Kenni and Finn unexpectedly find themselves in great danger. The quirky characters are well-developed and the tightly woven, superbly crafted has multiple twists and turns, Ms. Kappes has found the perfect blend of Southern charm, mystery, romance and humor. This book is definitely the best in series to date, but it can be read as a stand-alone, but readers will appreciate the progressive growth in all aspects of this series if you read each book in the series to date. Don’t miss this delightful, down-home mystery. I can’t wait for the next book in the series as this provided a perfect escape from the turmoil brewing all around the country! Don’t miss this laugh out loud, enjoyable book!

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank Ms. Kappes for the opportunity to read and review this entertaining book.

AX TO GRIND by Tonya Kappes
The Third Kenni Lowry Mystery

Cottonwood, Kentucky is abuzz. Not only are tourists and fans flocking to the town for the estate sale of late author Berlye Stone, but with election for Sheriff not yet two years away campaigning as begun in earnest. Sheriff Kenni Lowry gets a bad feeling when Berlye's assistant demands higher security measures until Berlye's most recent manuscript, a book which is a tell-all about the real residents of Cottonwood, can be found. When the assistant is found dead behind the antique store with another woman injured inside Kenni knows she has to act fast. It's a good thing she has Deputy Finn Vincent and the ghost of her Poppy, Cottonwood's last Sheriff, to help her!

The Kenni Lowry Mystery series is filled with Southern charm and gossip with just the right touch of danger. Kenni Lowry is a woman I'd be right pleased to not only call my friend, but my Sheriff. She's competent and knows how to do her job and deal with the residents of her small town. Yet she doesn't have all the answers and can fall victim herself, professionally and in matters of the heart!

AX TO GRIND is a great addition to the series as Kenni is faced with another murder and accused, not only of not being able to keep her town safe, but playing kissy face with her deputy! There are plenty of laughs, especially from Kenni's mama, and lots of fun, such as saving Hettie from mysterious critters and doing a little matchmaking. Tonya Kappes includes the right amount of police procedure, a little romance, and a lot of gossip to create a great mystery.

I really love this series from Tonya Kappes, and Ax to Grind may be my favorite so far.

Kenni Lowry is a delightful heroine – sometimes feisty, sometimes awkward, always the kind of character you’d want as a friend. Her loyal dog Duke has his own quirky personality and tends to steal the scene. Speaking of quirky, Kenni’s Poppa pops up to help her solve the crimes. Poppa used to be sheriff of Cottonwood before Kenni… he’s also deceased. While this paranormal twist to the series is lighthearted and sweet, I also think it’s ingenious. Poppa can go places Kenni can’t – and this gives us insight and clues we might not otherwise gain.

And then of course there is Finn – Kenni’s deputy and resident hunk. I really like the way their relationship continues to develop, and Kenni’s Mama’s antics regarding their potential romance will make you smile. Not to mention everyone else’s opinions. And in a small Kentucky town like Cottonwood, there are plenty of opinions – and plenty of fun characters to match.

Bottom Line: Ax to Grind by Tonya Kappes is fun, witty, and well-plotted. The mystery is full of twists and turns and a town full of suspects – and I had no idea whodunit until the big reveal. Kappes’ writing voice perfectly captures the nuances of small town Kentucky life, treating her roots with fondness as well as a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor. I can’t wait for the next installment!

Tonya Kappas is one of my favorite authors and I really like this series. Ax to Grind is book 3 in her Kenni Lowry Mystery series.

Kenni is the sheriff in the small town of Cottonwood where not everyone was so keen on having a female sheriff. Everyone has pretty much warmed up to the idea, even her mother. And even though it's not an election year her momma has been campaigning, especially since Lonnie announced he was going to run against her.

Berlye was Cottonwoods most famous celebrity but she has died and there is going to be an estate sale. Rumors are flying around about a tell-all manuscript that could say something about a prominent citizen.

There seems to be a lot of people who want to get their hands on it and that only leads to murder as Cecily, Berlye's assistant is found dead. She was suppose to know where this tell-all is but now she has taken the info to her grave. It's up to Kenni and her Deputy Finn along with her grandfather's ghost to find the killer.

I really like Kenni and Finn but I tell you it's really her ghostly grandfather and her momma that steals the show. They crack me up sometimes. I don't know how Kenni can ignore her grandfather when he is talking so she doesn't look like a crazy person. Or laugh out loud at some of the things he says. :) The part where her mother has a megaphone campaigning for Kenni, so funny.

Tonya's books always have that great southern charm that makes me smile and humor that just makes me chuckle. I can't wait to get the next one!
